Mr. David K. Gramling

The OMEGA staff, along with the Class of 1982, wholeheartedly dedicates the 1982 OMEGA to Mr. Gramling. He has shown time and time again that he knows the meaning of school spirit. He always seems to have the time to help when we need it. As we graduate, there will be many people we will remember; Mr. Gramling is someone whom we will never forget. To show our sincere appreciation to you, Mr. Gramling, the 1982 OMEGA has been compiled in your honor.

The Austin football team closed its season with an unhappy record of 0-10, but Coaches Giffune, Pike, Lyman and Bouvier kept a dedicated team alive. Under the leadership of Captains Mike McQuaid, Lou DiRupo, and Jerry Giuliano, the team managed to keep the spirit and hope of winning alive.

At the December 13 Awards Brunch, twenty-six varsity letters and fourteen J V. letters were awarded. Receiving the M.V.P. was Mike McQuaid. Lou DiRupo was awarded the Student Athlete Award, and Jerry Giuliano received the Coaches Award. Also, all Seniors were given their game shirts as a special award.

Returning core for next season as the team enters the Catholic Conference are quarterback Steve Schmidt, running backs Leo Crowe, Mike Falite, Dick Davis, and linemen John Lacreta, Kevin Bolduc, Tony Hunt, and Greg Stratis. This core promises to prove Austin’s competitiveness as it enters a new league.

The J.V. team managed to finish 1-7 with a victory over Greater Lawrence on November 9. The growing J.V. team shows

excellent talent for better future years.

“Where’s my defense?”

The 1981-1982 Freshman Football team finished with a victorious season holding a record of four wins and three losses. Led by first-year coach Frank Falite and assisted by Fred Olshaw, the team came out on top beating Andover, Central Catholic, Wilmington and Greater Lawrence.

The team members show excellent young talent that will surely mature into a very competitive team in the next three years. Combining next year’s upperclassmen with this young team of Freshmen should yield an inbeatable combination.

Senior Captain Don Foucher won four out of his six races and was chosen a First Team All-Star. He was also named “Runner of the Year” by the Lawrence Eagle-Tribune.

They were seeded twenty-two and yet they made it to the semi-finals. They blasted seeded third Winthrop with a 10 - 9 overtime victory.

This was the way the 1981-82 hockey season traveled. A series of hard-hitting, high-pitched, exciting games topped with outstanding effort.

Head Coach Brian Hayes managed a team consisting mainly of underclassmen. But this didn’t hamper things instead it assisted. The young team and co-captains Kevin Meek and Larry Stanton finally gave the student body something to cheer about.

The team started and continued throughout the season with excellence and victory. After beating Winthrop, the team was off to the Garden once again to take on Brookline.

With ease Austin was victorious over Brookline, 4 - 3. Now they had to face the competition ... Matignon.

As the crowd arrived, the feeling was tense but exciting. The first period was frustrating. Both teams trying to score and each one coming up empty. Matignon was the first to score putting two goals in the second period. Austin was determined to stop them. In the third period Austin scored thus starting its drive. Unfortunately, Matignon fought back and ended the cougar roll with a final score of 3 - 1.

The hockey team is to be congratulated for an outstanding and exciting season. These dedicated athletes show the high standard of Austin sportsmanship.

J.V. Hockey

The Junior Varsity hockey team ended its season with a winning record. Coach Bill Turner with his rotating captains led this team of young athletes to prove the fighting spirit of Austin Prep.

This team goes beyond words. If you could see them play, you would understand. In future years, these young men will lead the hockey team to victory in the Catholic conference.

The hockey team, both varsity and junior varsity, should be congratulated for a very successful and exciting season.

This year’s Varsity Basketball team ended up with a record of 2-18-0. As Coach Lyman said at the Winter Awards Brunch, “We would have liked to have been better, but they are a great bunch of guys.” The team, fighting a tough League and virtually no fan support, managed to stick it out. The group of truly | dedicated sportsmen were led by Senior Co-Captains Bill Coye and Dennis Glynn.

The season was painted with individual excellence and was highlighted on February 9th as Co-Captain Coye set a League single-game high of 34 points and was later named “Player of the Week.”

As the ball bounces and next year rolls around, the team, with its talented underclassmen, will show its spirit as it debuts in a new League.

The J. V. team ended with a record of 3-12. Coach Gerry. Bouvier led the young team as they, too, scrambled in a rough season. These young men, also fighting no fan support, managed to be competitive in one of the toughest basketball leagues in the area.

Freshman

Coach Larry Guidetti charged this young team to end its season with a record of 6-8. The Freshmen Basketball team is a group of young men who clearly worked together. Coach Guidetti commented that “they were a pleasure to work with.”

The whole team shows great talent and, as this talent grows, varsity teams in upcoming years will benefit from their fighting competitive spirit.

Winter Track

The Winter Track team closed its season with a record of 1-5. Coaches, Dan Murphy and Frank Falite and captains Don Foucher and Dave O’Donnell kept the group of dedicated runners alive during a tough season.

Captain Don Foucher set a new school and league record in the thousand. While mile-man “Boston” Bobby Derrah placed 7th at the league meeting.

The Austin Prep mile and two mile relay teams set new school records at the state relays held at Boston University.

The Austin Prep Ski Team was to again take to the slopes after a relatively ‘snow-less’ three years. Changes were noticeable this year, with graduates Phil Ragusa, and Brian McGlaughlin away at college, but a new generation of experienced racers appeared in the form of Dennis and Brian Keon, along with Scott Dawson. The team did fairly well, considering what they were up against. We hope they continue to progress, especially with next years switch of conferences.

The 1981-82 Cheerleader squad again supported and cheered our teams through three seasons. Captains Nancy Gentile and Carol Burnett led the twelve-girl squad with the help of three-year Senior veterans Maureen Donohoe, Mary Ellen Brady, and Erin Murphy. The squad travelled to Boston College on Dec. 5 to the National High School Cheerleader Championships and received a blue ribbon for superior performance. The squad has the sincere thanks of all athletes and spectators for their uplifting support.

The Omega

School began in September 1981 with its usual excitement and fury. Students new and old greeted each other, dramatized their vacations, and started to criticize the school again. Deep in a few students’ and instructors’ minds may have lurked that vague form of a yearbook. The former editors were never to be found, and their legacy was an office somewhere under mounds of paper and photo-

dust accumulation in the office. Concern grew and factions, desiring total control over this prestigious book, appeared on all fronts. There was no lack of student interest, as there had been in the past, but a lack of a single faculty moderator who could devote long and frustrating hours to its development. November arrived, and Mrs. Moulton and Mr. Miller agreed to become co-moderators. The editors were carefully selected from the interested seniors by the new co-moderators.

After appointing the Editor-in-chief, Peter Morris, and the sectional editors, the first meeting of the 1982 OMEGA Editors was called. While the quest for a moderator continued, the first deadline stealthily approached. These dates, although taken lightly by some, were barriers erected to slow and usually stop progress. Few knew of their magnitude

Faculty Co-moderator or even regarded the warnings of the previous years.

Mrs. Moulton Tradition seemed about to be broken when the first deadline was exceeded with ten extra pages accomplished, but these were false hopes.

As January passed, so did the deadline. Some of the editors may have wanted to exhibit grace under pressure. Others probably felt guilty for breaking tradition and wanted to see if they could have the yearbook arrive on the last day. A delay was definite, but a few editors were determined to finish the yearbook in order to have it ‘arrive before June. Days, nights, and weekends were utilized for this final lunge. At last it was completed and thrown at the mercy of the publisher. Now you know what the outcome was. Despite our problems, we have produced a yearbook. To those of you thinking of the 1983 OMEGA, we bequeath to you a clean office, a warning to start work in September, and our prayers.

The editorial board would like to thank Mrs. Moulton and Mr. Miller for their guidance and patience, as well as all of the people who contributed to this achievement. Special thanks also go to Mr. Hult for his vital role in the OMEGA’s publication.

Photography Club

The Photography Club serves a utilitarian function at Austin. Members are first instructed on the basic processes of black and white film developing and printing. Those students with cameras, for the rest of the year, use their skills to provide an abundant source of photographs for the school’s yearbook and newspaper. The school has a well-stocked darkroom, capable of black and white and limited color film developing and printing. The results of long hours in the darkroom can be seen in the photo exhibition at the Austin Open House. The club’s pictures provide the lively and unique documentation of each year which permanently records the variety of events from Grub Day to graduation.

Explorers

As other clubs come and go at Austin, Explorer Post 706 remains as a tradition. Each year the post organizes many recreational and service projects and this year was no exception. Earlier in the year there were hikes up Mount Monadnock and through the Lafayette trail. The members also skied at Loon Mountain.

Managing Editor Thomas Burgomaster

The staff of the 1981-82 Legend had a hard job ahead of them when they first assembled as a group in August, but after the office was cleaned out, things started to run smoothly; deadlines were met, pictures were taken, the staff as a whole got along well, and the overall quality of the paper was excellent. Mr. Hennessy, the Legend’s moderator chose Editorin-chief, Steve Patti, and Contributing Editor, Tom Burgomaster to lead the other editors. They were the following: Tim Kelley, (News), Kevin Miller, (Sports), Dan Daley, (Features), Frank Caruso and Pete Blottman, (Photo), and Chris Boyle, (Profiles). All did very well despite the fact that some people were never pleased. The problems of running the Legend reared their ugly heads in a slump that lasted from Thanksgiving to Washington’s Birthday. The Legend staff, never at a loss for words, or excuses, explained that they were in Nepal with the Dalillama, seeking spiritual guidance.

This slump was followed by the fastest turnaround in policy that the Legend editors had ever seen, after which the paper returned to its former days of glory. With five editions on the wall the Legend staff called it quits, for not only had the school year run out, but also the budget. The Legend-sponsored Rolling Stones concert had depleted the Legend account. At this time the process of forming a new staff began.

Softball

The softball scene in the fall of 1981 was both exciting and surprising. Due to the efforts of moderators Mr. Adamo and Mr. Bouvier to balance the two leagues the action was fast and furious.

The Meek and the Humble, led by Kevin Meek and Mr. Enright won the A-league championship but it didn’t come easily. In the semi-finals they had to come back from a heavy deficit to defeat the E-Club. In the finals they met the surprisingly strong Kool Aid Konnection. The Konnection, led by Jim Brine and Mr. Gramling won a squeaker over the talent-ladden Sows, 11-10, with excellent fielding and timely hitting.

The championship game was equally pulsating. The Meek and Humble won 6-5 but had to sustain a furious rush by the Kool Aid Konnection to pull it out.

In the B-league Riders on the Storm won handily over Murph’s Crew 7-1. The outcome was surprising since Murph’s Crew had waltzed through the regular season undefeated.

SCOTT J. HESELTINE

Dec. 2, 1963 - Feb. 16, 1982

If a tiny baby could think, it would be afraid of birth. To leave the only world it has known would seem a kind of death. But immediately after birth the child would find itself in loving arms, showered with affection and cared for at every moment. Surely the baby would say, “I was foolish to doubt God’s Plan for me. This is a beautiful life.”

For the Christian, passing through death is really a birth into a new and better world. Those who are left behind should not grieve as if there were no hope. Life is changed, not taken away. Our dear ones live on, in a world beautiful beyond anything we can imagine. With Jesus and Mary they await the day when they will welcome us with joy.

“Do not grieve too much,” they say to us. “We are living and are still with you.”
