Mr. George M. Miller

Mr. George M. Miller joined the Austin staff in 1968. In his 13 years at Austin Mr. Miller has played many roles. Some of the activities in which he has been involved are: Chairman of the English Department, Director of Students Activities, Director of the Media Center, Student Council Advisor, and

Co-moderator of the Friends of Austin. He has contributed to the growth and maturity of every student he has come in contact with. We would like to thank Mr. Miller for everything he has done for us by dedicating the 1981 OMEGA to him.

As the season opened, it looked as though the 1980 Varsity Football team would finally have a winning season beating Greater Lowell by a score of 21 to 12. However, as the games came and went, it became obvious that it was going to be just like any other football season. The only other highlight of the season was the team’s second win, beating Greater Lawrence 22 to 14.

In his second year at Austin, Coach Giffune led the Cougars to a two and seven season, not a bad start considering that this year Austin was placed in a new M.V.C. league with top teams such as Wilmington and Lawrence. This year Coach Giffune was assisted by Coach Lyman and Coach Pike, a new teacher here at Austin. Tri-Captains this year were Emidio Valeri, Jerry White, and Larry McQuaid. The season ended, and Jerry White and Larry McQuaid were elected to this year’s M.V.C. league all-stars.

The Varsity Soccer team got off to a rough start by dropping its first three games. The team’s only taste of victory came midway through the season when the Cougars beat Lawrence at home by the score of 4 to 2, and again when they beat Greater Lowell by the score of 6 to 1. The only other consolation this year came when the Cougars tied four times.

This year the Cougars were led by Captains Bill Frevold and Peter Miller, and by Coach Peter Haley. Bill Frevold was awarded the M.V.P. trophy, and Peter Miller received the Coach’s award. Also, George Simas and Bill Frevold were elected to the 1980 M.V.C All Stars.

Cross Country

This year, which was to be considered as a rebuilding year, the Cross Country team managed a 3-5 season. The wins were against Malvern Prep, Dracut, and Lawrence, while close losses were against Lowell, Tewksbury, Wilmington, Billerica, and Chelmsford. Leading the pack for the seniors were William Labossier, Dennis Clemens, and Captain Michael Flanagan. Juniors Donald Foucher, Gerald Centrella, and Daniel Flanagan were close behind. Coach Locker, having experience in coaching Cross Country with runners from Billerica, saw his first year of coaching at Austin in the always tough Merrimack Valley Conference. Although the record this year wasn’t excellent, the future does look bright for the Harriers.

Varsity Basketball

The Austin Prep Varsity Basketball team had a somewhat disappointing season. This year’s team ended with a 9-10 record which was good enough for a fourth place finish in the M.V.C. East Division. The team, under Coach Larry Guidetti, won impressive victories over then first place Chelmsford, Dracut, Billerica and avenged an earlier overtime loss to Tewksbury. The team lost some close games to Haverhill, Methuen, and Chelmsford.

This year’s Cougars were led by Captain Dennis Clemens. Playing very well for the Cougars at the forward position were Nick Carbone, Tony Burke, and Tom Mulkern. In the backcourt for the team were Gerry White, Dave Hoyt, and Sophomore standout Ray Vega. Playing center were Capt. Clemens and Mike Mulica, who was named to the M.V.C. All Star team at the end of the season. With Sophomore Ray Vega and Juniors Billy Coye and Dennis Glynn returning the Austin basketball team should have a bright future.

JV Basketball

The 1980-1981 Austin Prep JV Basketball team had a pretty successful season. The team compiled a good 10-9 record. The team was led by the scoring of Dennis Metayer and Rick Vega, and the rebounding and hustling of Russ Jeffrey and Kevin Bolduc. The defense was led by Captain Kip Carbone who played guard. Significant contributions were also made by Mark Connolly, Dave Ross, Dave Barker, and Rick Janicki. The biggest victory of the season was a decisive win over Tewksbury.

The Austin Prep Hockey team had a most successful season. The team won the M.V.C. for the first time in their exsistence. Austin raced through the regular season beating everyone left and right. The highlight of the regular season was a 4-3 victory over arch-rival Billerica, won on a last second goal by Capt. Fran Murray. The team came out with a 2-2 tie after a hard fought battle with Wilmington. The Cougars remained undefeated until the last game of the season. The Cougars then suffered a letdown against a poor Central Catholic team and were upset 8-6 and finished the season with a spectacular 16-1-1 record. The team prepared for the tourney by playing St. John’s Prep, who were led by the Can’t Miss Kid, Bobby Carpenter. Austin, with four regulars injured, lost 3-1.

The Cougars then entered the E. Mass tourney for the seventh consecutive year. The Cougars faced Randolph in the first round and literally blew them off the ice, 9-1. Austin then faced Middlesex League Champs Woburn, as the cry “Austin in Boston” became reality for the first time in three years. Austin beat the Tanners and ex-teammate Gary Stack by a decisive 6-3 score. Austin entered the semi-finals to face top seeded Acton-Boxboro, but lost in a thrilling game 5-3.

The success of the 1980-1981 Cougars was due to some fantastic individual preformances and great team efforts. The Cougars were led by Co.-Captains Blaise MacDonald and Fran Murray. The powerplay line of Murray (26-29-55), Rich Jackson (23-24-47), and Dave Knowlton (18-26-44) were the top three scorers in the M.V.C. All three ended up with over forty points for the season. High-scoring defenseman Dave Nelson came within one point of the all-time single season scoring record for defensemen. Capt. MacDonald was the anchor of the best defense in the league. Senior walk-on Chris Houde and policeman Ed Ducharme played major roles in this year’s success. The emergence of the strong third line of junior Larry Stanton, and Frosh Bill Kopecky and Billy Moody enabled Austin to go far in this year’s tourney. High scoring Junior Gerry Chennelle and Sophomore Bobby Visone also made significant contributions during the season. The steady play of three-year starter Peter Raymond turned to spectacular at the end of the season and his sensational play was probably the most important factor in Austin’s Tourney success. Murray, Jackson, MacDonald, and Nelson were all named All-League and placed on the All-Star Catholic Team.

Winter Track

The Austin Winter Track team came within six points of winning the M.V.C. Division I (small schools) League Championship. The Cougars did not have quite enough depth to overcome Greater Lawrence or Central Catholic, but they easily defeated Lawrence and Greater Lowell, and won the final mile relay event to pull off come-from-behind wins against Wilmington and Tewksbury.

Coach Daniel Murphy did a fine job in molding the runners into a spirited and talented team. Bob Fotino, Chip Kenney, Greg Alia, John LeClerc, and late-starting George Simas made the Cougars stronger than expected in the sprint events (50 and 300 yards).

Austin was very strong in the 600 with Co-Captain John Coulter going undefeated in dual meets. Bill Labossier and Dan Flanagan ran well in the 1000. In the 50 yard high hurdles, Co-Captain Peter Iannazzi also went undefeated, setting a school record and tying the league record, while beating his hometown, Andover, by running the event in 6.5 seconds without the help of starting blocks.

Daryl Brien and John LaCreta helped make the shot put one of Austin’s stronger events. Don Foucher was pressed into service in the high jump and performed well despite having to run a distance event as well.

In the mile and deuce, Mike Flanagan, Don Foucher, Gerry Centrella, and Mike Higgins showed great energy and kept the scores close in order to bring the meets down to the final relay. The mile relay team won whenever it had to, thanks mostly to the thrilling come-from-behind finishes of Peter Ianazzi and John Coulter.

In the League Meet, Ianazzi won the high hurdles, but the best individual performance of the season had to be John Coulter’s winning of the State Class C 600 yard run by running with the blistering time of 1:14.7. He lowered the school record 4.2 seconds and deserves to be congratulated.

French Club vs. Russian Club

On December 30, 1980 the two Austin powers met at the Billerica Forum. On this night, the Russian Club battled the French Club in a fierce game of ice hockey. Each club fielded good teams even though the French Club chose not to use alumni.

At 11:00 p.m. the two rival teams met on the ice for the opening face-off. The first period was a hard fought one and when it was over the French Club led 2-1.

The second period was controlled by the French Club and the score now read French Club 5, Russian Club 1. In the third and final period, the Russian Club was able to tally two more goals. This, however, was matched by the French Club’s three third-period goals. When the final whistle blew, the teams left the ice and headed home to recover before the new year. The final score: French Club 8, Russian Club 3. Both teams are sure to meet up again next year.

OMEGA ,

It is early September and the Omega staff is assembled in the office, some of them have never worked with each other before, yet together they will strive to put together the 1981 edition of the Omega. The moderator, Mr. Mackiewicz, is a hardened veteran; his staff, new and brimming with ideas. Under the semi-direction of the Editor-in-chief, who shall remain nameless in order to avoid ridicule, the Omega - people set out upon their first goals of choosing a theme and getting out that first deadline. However, unknown to them, this would not be as easy as it seemed.

Mr. Gary Mackiewicz

The Omega-ites would fall into the trap of procrastination. Suddenly it was the dreaded deadline time and not one page had been laid out. So a small handful of the already diminishing staff, their moderator and their Walsworth representative set to work on the first 38 pages. This stupendous feat was miraculously accomplished in only nine hours.

The problems of yearbook work started to rear their. ugly heads. The office was plagued by students who found fault with all that the staff had done, the room had become increasingly more dump-like and the staff found it hard to work under threats of bodily harm and lock changes.

While combating these plagues the staff tried once again in vain to meet the second deadline. It had become apparent that several members of the staff had forgotten where the office was and: had to be reminded.

The days passed, weeks, months, deadlines came and went. Unfortunately the weary staff was able to only meet a few, if any, of the deadlines. The stress of yearbook work was beginning to take its toll on the unsuspecting staff. Fearing for their lives, a few die-hard editors stuck it out and were determined to meet that last deadline. However, the task was just too great for the remaining editors and that deadline too. slipped by.

With everything finally in, the weary editors took up permanent residence in the so familiar office that they had come to think of as their home away from home. As proof of their dilligent work, you now have a yearbook in front of you. We hope it will remind you of the happy, exciting, rewarding, and sometimes depressing moments here at Austin. In closing we would like to thank Bill Fotino, Mr. Miller, Mr. McCarthy for his skittle pool, Mr. Hennessey, and with great respect we would like to thank Mr. Mackiewicz for this time and patience. We put a lot into this yearbook, we hope you take as much out, thank you.

The Legend

The task of putting together a school newspaper is not an easy one, yet out from under the shadow of last year’s Legend came the brand new 1980-1 Legend. Mr. Hennessy took the helm of the sinking ship and with the help of his extremely competent staff managed to salvage and restore the Legend to its earlier glory.

For his first officer Mr. Hennessy chose Editor-in-chief, James Bowers. Next in the crew came Managing editor Richard Fotino. The rest of the staff was carefully hand-picked and out of the stack of resumes were chosen; Christopher Glionna - Photography Editor, Charles Correia - News Editor, Steven Patti - Features Editor, Peter Miller - Sports Editor, and Thomas Burgomaster - Contributing Editor.

Next came the chore of rumaging through the ruins of the Legend office and establishing a workable environment. With that out of the way the staff got to work on the first issue. The crew worked day and night and in spite of numerous comments by doubting Thomases, the first issue became history. The first issue took its place on the wall of the Legend Office and was soon followed by the second issue and the third and the fourth. It seemed as though nothing could stop the new Legend, until word came from the high command that there would have to be a 36 page limit. Undaunted, the crew took this fact into account and divided the remaining fourteen pages into two, four page issues and a final six page issue.

With the task completed th crew retired leaving control of the ship in the hands of Mr. Hennessy and next year’s Editor-in-chief, Good-luck!

Mr. Frank W. Enfanto

After nine years of dedicated service to Austin Prep, six of which he served as Dean of Students, Mr. Frank W. Enfanto left our school to pursue a career in the field of computer education. During his years at Austin, Mr. Enfanto, affectionately referred to as “The Prince of Darkness,” did much for the students and faculty alike. The staff of the 1981 OMEGA would like to thank him for his

extensive involvement in the life of the school which included, among other things, Chairman of the Math Department, Coordinator of Computer Science, Golf coach, and “"yBasketball coach. He will surely be missed by all the students, parents, and faculty. We wish him all the luck in his future years at Wang Laboratories, and we will never forget him.
