Rev. Robert A. Walsh, a man truly dedicated to the advancement of youth, leaves Austin Preparatory School after eight years of loyal service. The Class of 1980 would like to express its most sincere appreciation for his outstanding leadership, wisdom and guidance during our first three years at Austin; in gratitude, we warmly dedicate the 1980 OMEGA to Father Walsh.

Different Towns, Different Backgrounds...
Austin Preparatory School was founded in 1962 by the Order of Saint Augustine at the request of the late Richard Cardinal Cushing, who wished to provide high quality Catholic education for boys in the North Shore area. It is secondary school with a college preparatory curriculum.
The student body is composed of students from more than forty towns. The urban areas of Medford and Arlington, as well as rural Dunstable and Plaistow, New Hampshire, are represented in the student population at Austin. Students travel from the rocky coast of Cape Ann on the east and from historical Lexington and Concord to the west.
Each incoming Freshman class at Austin is an unorganized but enthusiastic group. Many of the students have never met each other before and, therefore, have never worked together. Yet, somehow, Austin constantly turns out many successful teams. The varsity hockey team is recognized across the state, the cross country team has won the state championship, the chess team has always been very competitive, the golf team has won several Merrimack Valley championships. Austin is a Catholic institution, but students of all faiths are accepted. A close look at the student body will reveal Catholics, Protestants, Jews and people of other beliefs. There is a chaplain who provides spiritual guidance and counseling for all students. When school is in session, liturgies are held in the school chapel, but the sacraments are celebrated even on camping trips in the wildnerness.
The faculty at Austin consists of both Augustinian priests and laymen. Faculty members have studied at such diverse places as the Sorbonne, Moscow State University, University of Rome, MIT, Harvard, Yale, Villanova and Tufts. More than half of the faculty members have Masters degrees.
The larger community of Austin Prep is made up of small communities centered around special interests and goals. There are language clubs like the Russian and French clubs, literary societies like the Writers’ Club, the school newspaper, and the yearbook, and intramural activities in softball, chess, and bowling. The faculty is organized into the Departments of English, Foreign Languages, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Religion. Austin takes all these small groups and melds them into a unified and highly successful community which fosters the principles of academic excellence and spiritual development.

A Wide Variety...
Tom Glynn learns the meaning of teamwork.
Symbols of pride and achievement.
The students at Austin Prep have many diverse interests which are exhibited in the different activities in which they participate. By looking at the clubs and sports of the school, one can see where the student interests lie.
The foreign language clubs enable students to learn about many different cultures of the world. Those who enjoy competition with their friends and faculty become active in the Bowling Club, and Chess Club, or the Intramural Softball program. Activities such as the Blackfriars, THE LEGEND, the OMEGA, and the Photography Club enable the students to display their talents to the student body as well as to the general public. Students with an adventurous spirit will most likely be drawn to such activities as the Explorers, the Roller Coaster Club, and the Ski Club. Those students interested in helping their classmates join the Honors Help Club or the Orientation Committee. Others wish to represent the student body by running for a position on the Student Council. Each year new clubs are added in order to adapt to the students’ new interests.
The athletic program at Austin also shows the diversity of students’ interests. The great variety of sports gives almost everyone a chance to participate and also allows them to represent the school.
From among all of these various activities, the students choose ways in which to display their many interests.

The Austin Prep Varsity Football Team had its early season problems, but was able to get on the right track during the last part of the season. Injuries and various other problems contributed to Austin’s slow start in the always tough M.V.C.
Austin was led this year by co-captains Brad Dee and Steve Pasquariello. Pasquariello was later named to the Merrimack Valley Conference first team all-stars at linebacker. The final two games were the highlight of the season. Austin knocked off a scrappy Catholic Central team, and then pummeled a solid Billerica team, in a very exciting game.
First year coach Giffune has the task of bringing Austin Prep football back to where it should be, and if the last two games were any indication, Austin’s future looks bright.
For the senior members of the squad, Coach Giffune was their third coach in four years. The seniors faced three sets of systems, three sets of assistants, and three sets of rules and regulations. Now with a new weight room, and a renewed interest, Austin Prep football should return to where it belongs.

The Austin Prep Cross Country Team managed to win three meets in the 1979 season. This season was designated as a rebuilding year, so the record was not all that bad. The harriers’ three victories were over Tewksbury, Dracut and Lawrence. Austin was led this year by Senior Captain Paul Fawcett and seniors Mark Sturzo and Kenneth Wells. All three of these runners participated in varsity action before and were able to guide the inexperienced, younger runners through the tough M.V.C. Many of the runners ran in post-season meets in which they fared well. Coming

The Austin Prep Soccer Team had a most disappointing 1979 season. Austin lost many starters due to last year’s graduation and had to go with a relatively young team throughout the campaign. Leading the booters were senior Captain Steve Gaudet and seniors Kevin Banfield and Paul Sullivan. The team managed to hold their own in every game but were unable to pull it all together.
The team was able to salvage a victory against arch-rival St. Johns at the end of the season. This year also marked the a ) i completion of the long awaited soccer fields.

The Austin Prep Varsity Hockey team again had a successful season. The cougars had many returning lettermen from last year’s team and thus were able to continue with their winning ways. Leading the way this year were Captain Brian McNamara and assistants Tony Visone and Rich Robinson. Between the three of them there were eleven years of varsity competition. Other members included seniors Mark Torpey and Bob Banfield, juniors David Knowlton, Fran Murray, and Peter Raymond.
After three long years the seniors were finally able to come up with a victory over Billerica. The Indians proved to be no contest for the cougars who handed them a 6-1 loss. After getting by Billerica there seemed to be nothing in the way of Austin and the outright title of Merrimack Valley Conference champions. However, nobody told that to Wilmington, who handed Austin a 5-3 setback. The Cougars then lost a tough one against Chelmsford in a very exciting game. Austin finally got back to their winning ways for the State Tournament.

Varsity Basketball
The Austin Prep Varsity Basketball team had a very misleading record. The hoopsters had a disappointing season as far as their record was concerned, but the Cougars and every other team in the conference knew they deserved better. After a discouraging start, the squad played well in games against highly touted Andover and a scrapping Methuen team, before bowing out on the fourth quarter.
The Cougars were led by a number of seniors. Captains Dave Blackett and Tom Glynn were the leaders on and off the court. Up front for the Cougars were Glynn, seniors Joe Torissi, Jim Connolly, and Dave Collins. In the backcourt were Blackett, senior Jeff Lyman, and junior Jerry White. Blackett, a two-year starter, led the team in scoring. Torissi and Glynn were the tough guys under the boards. Austin was a team of hustle and determination, as they never gave up until the final whistle.

The Freshmen Basketball team had a very successful season this year, winning 14, and dropping only 5. The young Cougars were a team with a lot of talent that made Coach McCarthy’s job a little easier. The Frosh were led this year by Ray Vega, Dennis Metayer, and Ricky Vega. Those three combined for most of Austin’s offense. Leading the Cougars under the boards were Dave Barker, Kevin Bolduc, Russ Jeffrey, and Dan MacNeil. Vic Carbone turned in many good performances on defense. The hoopsters had a strong bench consisting of Mark Connolly, Bob Glatz, Dennis Gaudet, and Rick Janick. The Cougars winning of 14 games this year broke the old Freshmen record by one, set in 1978.

The Austin Prep Ski team had a shortened schedule this year due to the lack of snow. The team held all their meets at the Bradford Ski Area. Coached by Fr. Johnson, the skiers struggled through a tough schedule. Austin had many young skiers who were trying to gain some experience for the future. The Cougars were led this year by senior Captain Dave DeSantis, a top skier in eastern Massachusetts. Other team members included senior John Killam, and juniors Phil Ragusa and Matt Collier. aoa The future looks bright for the young Cougars with only two seniors graduating.

The Austin Prep Winter Track team had a very respectable 4-4 record this year. The Trackmen were led this year by a host of seniors. Leading the pack were shot-putter Pat Palmer, sprinter Steve Goulas, high-jumper Paul Fawcett and long distance men Mark Sturzo and Kenneth Wells. Other seniors included Tom McGowan, Paul Fallon, Brian Doherty, John Powers, and Mike Kane.
Most of Austin’s meets came down to the last event, the mile-relay. Austin didn’t have the manpower of the other schools in the conference, and thus didn’t fare too well in this event. Austin easily could have won two more meets if they had more manpower.
After the season, many of Austin’s runners competed in post-season meets. Such meets were the League Meet, Methuen Invitational, and the Boston University Relays, which Austin entered as the defending champion.

“T finally got through my Junior year. Maybe now some of the pressure will subside. There’s my friends who want me to go out on Friday nights, my parents want me to do homework, my teachers want me to pass, I want some time to myself.”
“My girl friend dumped me after two years. My little sister cuts me down. Trivial things bother me. For instance, what’s the sense of putting zeros at the end of SAT scores? Soon I’ll have to start thinking about college, about a career. My future will be on the line.”
“T did get my driver’s license this year after just two tries. I thought that this new freedom was great until I put a small dent in Dad’s car. The insurance company totalled it. Dad almost totalled me. When we bought our new car, I left the radio and the lights on too long and the battery went dead. Now I have to go to the drive-in on my bicycle.”
“Sometimes I don’t know which way to turn. Once I almost quit school to pump gas. It’s all part of growing up. I can handle it. I survived Skylab, didn’t I? There is only one more year of high school left. Then comes college and the independence which I have looked forward to for a long time.”

“T walked into our Sophomore homeroom late on the first day of school. was amazed to find that several of my friends didn’t return to Austin. I went to my first period class. We had another new English teacher. I threw a paper airplane across the room. He kicked me out of class and I got a detention.”
“During C-period, I tried to make a Freshman sing. His 6'3”, 220 pound Senior brother nicknamed ‘Ape’ intervened, so I let him off the hook. At lunch, I cut into line in front of a bunch of Frosh. I was given a day of volunteer caf duty for that one. When I sat down to eat,
I threw my unwanted food on the floor. I got a whole week
of caf duty and another detention to top it off-2
“My day wasn’t going so hot so I figured that I needed a little rest and I skipped my last period class. They found me in the locker room and gave me three full days to rest at home.”
“T went to the dance with some friends and I tried to scoop this girl. She told me to call her when I started shaving. I went back to my friends and they asked me what happened, so I told them that she wasn’t for me because she was into shaving. It was time to go, so I called my mother.”
“Somehow I managed to survive this year. I do have many good memories, though. I played softball, joined the student musical, I made many new friends, and I even passed all my courses. I am looking forward to next
year.”

‘‘Wow, what a year this has been; it’s a big change from Junior High. I used to think that a sugar bear was a kind of candy and that a wedgie was. well, I guess it’s just something you have to experience. When I first got here, they were really good to us Freshmen. A bunch of kids, I guess they were Juniors and Seniors and Upperclassmen,
had a cookout for us. The food was rotten.”
‘‘When they took us around the school, I asked my friend, Hey, who’s that guy in the black cape?’ He told me it was a funeral director. I nearly died. Then somebody said that it was Fr. Johnson. I then thought that all our teachers would be priests.”
“My first day of classes, I got lost six times. I couldn’t believe it. asked Fr. Nicotra where Room 507 was. I still can’t figure out why he wasn’t wearing his black cape. Then a bunch of kids made me sing ’Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.’ I was wicked embarrassed. It wasn’t even Christmas. But that was nothing. I found out that I had that Fr. Johnson for Biology. He hit me fifteen times with a sawed-off goalie stick for something my older brother did five years ago.”
“After those first few weeks, things got a little better. I started to get used to life at Austin. I even traded in all my clip-on ties. I think I'll come back next year—at least I won’t have to be a Freshman again.”

in Cardinal Medeiros Visits Aust
On Thursday, November 29, 1980, His Eminence Humberto Cardinal Medeiros, the Archbishop of Boston, accepted an invitation from the Student Council to visit our school. A mass concelebrated by His Eminence, the priests of Austin, and Fr. Maloney of St. Agnes Church in Reading, was held in the cafeteria. Senior Frank Millerick presented the First Reading followed by the Responsorial Psalm, which was led by Senior Bob Landry. Senior Justin Bowers offered the Prayers of the Faithful. Following the mass, His Eminence received the student body in the main lobby and was given a brief tour of the school. After his tour, the Cardinal dined with Fr. Kenny, Mr. Miller and the Student Council in the monastery. At this time, the Cardinal was presented a check for five hundred dollars to aid the poor of Boston. Also, Cardinal Medeiros was given an Austin blanket and jacket as momentos of his visit.

Photography Club
This year the Photo Club undertook the project of improving the darkroom on the fourth floor. What originally began as a simple plan to install a larger sink soon evolved into a complete refurbishment of the darkroom which lasted for several weeks. The walls were first painted black and then storage shelves were put up. Next Mr. J. McCarthy, Mr. Stone and Mr. Mackiewicz built a sturdy wall-to-wall counter to support the new double sink and to serve as the wet side of the darkroom. An eight foot work table was also constructed. A professional touch was provided by Mr. Massaro, father of one of the club’s members, who donated his time, expertise and materials to install ceramic tile the whole length of the wet side of the darkroom. To complete the room, several major pieces of equipment were purchased, including a new Cromega dichroic enlarger, an automatic print washer, a timer and a print dryer. These purchases were made possible by a generous gift from the Friends of Austin. Mr. Staniewicz also contributed his print dryer and stabilization processor. Other assistance was provided by Mr. Bellerose, Fr. Johnson, Mrs. Struthers, and Mr. Sottile. In addition, Mr. Whitman, father of
Chris Glionna, a.k.a. ‘‘Flash’’.
another club member, has loaned his camera to the club so that students who do not own their own 35mm SLR can nonetheless learn how to use an advanced camera. It is the purpose of the Photography Club to provide all of the pictures that might be needed by the various activities of the school, such as the OMEGA and THE LEGEND. In so doing, the club members have the opportunity to learn or refine the various skills involved in picture taking, developing, and printing. The new, refinished darkroom provides the equipment necessary to accomplish this goal efficiently and pleasantly.

OMEGA 1980
In the beginning there was only a moderator, an editor-in-chief, and a spacious, unfurnished office on the fourth floor. But on this shaky foundation, the 1980 OMEGA staff was built. The key to this was the flawless selection of the editorial board. By choosing only the most dedicated students, especially in the photo department, a cracked staff was formed.
After deciding that this year’s book would be a little diverse, the staff began work on the color and senior sections. Here is where the editors received their first taste of the fierce battles that would have to be fought in order to preserve their sanity. And with a lot of hard work and many Saturday mornings filled with the pearly words of wisdom from WBCN, the Senior section was finished. However, the color section was not as easily completed. The staff specifically the editor-in-chief and the managing editor had to brave threats of death in order to publish a controversial picture of a certain math teacher. Nevertheless, the editors, who believe in freedom of the press and a good laugh, submitted the color section on time. Unfortunately, this may have been the high point of the year.
The staff was hit with many strange and rare diseases. The first one is known as the deadly OMEGA Syndrome and preys on overworked, undernourished editors facing deadlines. The second one is the LEGENDaires Disease. This slow moving and cruel agent attacks only those people who have come in contact with the school newspaper. Two common symptoms are frequent misspellings and deletions under the activities section of a senior’s transcript. Even facing such overwhelming odds, the faculty and underclassmen sections were finished in time for Christmas, but that’s all they were on time for.

The office was in a rut when the Activities Editor stepped in and made his presence felt. Soon apathy was rampany in the entire office rather than confined to his well-organized desk. Thanks to this and other factors, including the pony express that delivered pages to the publishing company, the dead line came and went and the office took its frustration out by vigorously exercising in the office.
For the last deadline, the usual office staff was privileged to play host to the highly critical Sports editor. Page after page flowed from his desk like pictures from a typical sports page. There was also a proliferation of cut downs, cheap shots, and low blows issued from his silver tongue.
In spite of all this the editors continued to work in the same office to finish off this year’s one hundred twenty-eight pages. I would like to express my appreciation to almost all the people who put their two cents worth in. And as I reflect back on the trials and tribulations of the 1980 OMEGA, I realize that it was worth putting up with bears, courgars, pro wrestlers, killer chairs, U.F.O.’s, commie trees, and high ranking religious officials checking up on the morality level. But as I peck out these final words, one thought has repeatedly occured to me. I, the 1980 OMEGA MAN, can honestly say that while these pages are not perfect, this yearbook certainly is not slipshod.
The following people have also helped produce this yearbook. Without their help this book would not be possible. The staff would like to thank photo librarians Mike Putnicki and Dennis Curran, copy editors Jim Connolly and John Connaughton, and typists Jim Bowers and Joe Massaro. Also a special note of thanks to Chris Glionna for his photo work, as well as Mr. J. McCarthy and Mr. McDonough. And the entire editorial board of the OMEGA expresses their deepest thanks to our moderator, Mr. Mackiewicz, without whose effort this book would not be possible.

Student Council
Class Officers
The Student Council has been one of the most active groups at Austin in recent years. Comprised of students elected by their class members, this organization has held a number of successful fund raisers. The Student Council sponsored the magazine drive, a dance, and the collection for the gift to the archdiocese of Boston. Once again the Student Council coordinated the visit from the Red Cross Bloodmobile. In the spring, the Student Council held their annual book fair.
The highlight of the year for the Student Council was the visit of Cardinal Medeiros in late November at the invitation of the Council. After saying mass in the cafeteria, in which many of the members participated in, Cardinal Medeiros dined with Mr. Miller, Fr. Kenny, and the Student Council in the monastery.
The Senior Class Officers, led by class president Bob Landry, worked hard this year to defray the high cost of the Senior Prom. The officers held numerous events to build up the class treasury with the assistance of their class advisor, Mr. Nicotra.

Explorers
Explorer Post 706 is one of the oldest clubs at Austin. Each year the group becomes involved in a wide variety of recreational and service projects. This year the Explorers organized hiking, mountain climbing, fishing, swimming, and skiing trips.
The older members participated in last year’s “Superactivity’ to Minnesota. For three weeks, the Explorers lived in the wilderness canoeing and occasionally having to portage their canoe. Mr. McDonough, Mr. Stone, Mr. Nicotra, and Fr. Turnbull helped trip leader Mr. John McCarthy. The trip ended with a visit to King’s Island Amusement Park in Ohio.
This year also marked the beginning of the new Machine E-Pot. Run by Post president Dave Weber, this E-Pot offers more recreation than previous E-Pots.

On March 17, 18, 19, 1979 students from Austin and girls from surrounding areas staged the musical variety show, LULLABY OF BROADWAY. This production, held at Parker Junior High, was under the direction of Mr. Emmet O’Brien. The production moderator for the musical was Mr. Stone.

Softball
In the spring of 1979, the Juniors ruled the softball scene by defeating the previously unbeaten J. Gillespie team in the finals to capture their second consecutive Austin Prep Intramural Softball Championship. The Juniors, led by ace pitcher Dave Blackett, and the doubleplay combination of Matt ‘“‘Poncho’”’ Kmon and Ken Ciccone, then took on the faculty all-star team led by the smooth fielding moderator of intramural softball, Mr. Kelly. Again the Juniors emerged the easy victors in what may be called an interesting contest.
After the spring season, it seemed as if the champions would clinch the title for an unprecedented third time. Now appropriately named the Seniors, the squad raced through the regular season and entered the playoffs as the heavy favorites. But another junior team, much in the mold of the 1979 Spring Champions, the Converse All-Stars stopped the Seniors’ march in the semi-finals. The All-Stars then advanced to the finals, only to lose to the powerful Ten. The Ten was led by Mr. Enfanto, the solid third base play of Rich Cowdrey, and timely hitting. The B-league champions were the Rebel’s Revolt led by the versatile Mr. Enright.

AUSTIN PREPARATORY SCHOOL
May 1980
Men of Austin, Class of 1980:
Congratulations to you on your successful completion of four strenuous years of academic endeavor at Austin Preparatory School. We, the faculty and administration at Austin, along with your parents and friends, are proud of you. We realize the dedication and hard work that have brought you to graduation day, 1980.
Four years ago you came to us as bewildered, wide-eyed boys from over twentyeight different communities. Today we are proud to return you to those communities as confident young men. We feel that the intellectual abilities and training that you have received here at Austin will enable you to compete with other students like you from coast to coast.
Although you represent many different communities and family backgrounds, you have shown us that a diversified group can function as a whole. Through your own efforts and with the help of the faculty and administration you have formed yourselves into a single academic and social unit that has attained a high degree of self-confidence and intellectual well-being. You have become the epitome of the axiom that ''the whole is equal to the sum of its parts."
It is the hope of all of us here at Austin that this talent of yours, solidifying and unifying many into one, will be carried by each of you into your diverse futures. May you bring everyone with whom you come in contact to the knowledge and realization of the true value of life, learning, and love of God.
May our heartfelt good wishes and prayerful aspirations follow you wherever you may go.
