This largely happy and fruitful Senior year was marked by a great disappointment for the Austin community. Last fall Father Arthur Johnson, who had been an integral part of Austin since its inception, was transferred to St. Mary’s Parish in Lawrence. His leaving has left a void in our life at Austin, and we all miss him, although he returns to visit us often. As we ourselves leave Austin, we bring with us a part of a friend who gave to us much of himself. Thank you, Father J.

Football
The Austin Prep Varsity Football Team got off to a slow start, but produced a strong finish. The team was led by tri-captains Paul Tucker, Mike Winn and John Kelly. Although they posted a 2-7 record the team was in contention for every game. With the loss of only a few seniors, the team is looking forward to a much more successful season.

Soccer
The Austin Prep Varsity Soccer Team experienced another trying season. Although there was a one-hundred percent improvement of soccer quality, victory was only seen twice. The Cougars were probably the most physically fit team in the league; however one aspect that the team lacked was offensive scoring. Their schedule proves that the Cougars were very competitive. They never lost by more than two goals. Next year they hope to see more scoring punch which will raise the team in the league standings.

Cross Country
Austin’s Cross Country Team enjoyed its best season ever running to a 9-0 record. This was good enough for first place in one of the strongest leagues in the state, the Merrimack Valley Conference. This year’s harriers were the first team in Austin’s history to go undefeated in the M.V.C., and receive white letters. The team was also among the best in the state, capturing the Eastern Massachusetts Division 1V Championship for the second consecutive year. Of all their meets this year, the Cougars were only challenged once by a strong Tewksbury squad However, with an extra effort by the runners, and strong support from the spectators, Austin was able to overtake them by a narrow margin Consistent performers this year were seniors, Captain Blaize Conte and Bill Welch. Juniors Tom Callahan, Dave Sheehan and Andy Parece were selected as M.V.C. league All-Stars. Bob Wilson, Kevin Yahnian, Joe Geary and Mark Sturzo were also key members of this year’s team. With the help of strong J.V. runners Ken Wells, Paul Fawcett, Bob Bell and Tom Fox, the team should remain on top

On Saturday, October 29 Reading’s Austin Prep’s cross country team repeated as Division IV State Champions at White Stadium, Boston with 124 points. Second and third place winners were Weston High School with 145 points and Oliver Ames High School with 184.
Eastern Massachusetts officials presented individual trophies to Austin team members and to their coach Tom McDonough. Boys competing included Joe Geary, Tom Callahan, Bob Wilson, Andy Parece, Bill Welch, Blaize Conte and Dave Sheehan. Dave received an individual trophy for his excellent seventh place finish in a field of 300 runners. Cross country assistant coach is Kevin Callahan, a resident of Reading.

The Varsity Basketball Team, coached by Mr. Enright and Mr. Enfanto, did not produce the victories they had hoped for, yet they were in contention every game they played. The team was led by co-captains Chris Lumenello and Chris Murphy. Other seniors who contributed to the team were Paul Tucker and Tom Mansour. A large amount of effort was seen from all of the team members even though their record does not show it.

The 1977-78 Cougars experienced an interesting season this year. It had not been as successful as originally anticipated. Although they suffered several unexpected defeats, the hockey team had some bright spots on the season. David Hill, a transfer student from Andover kept the Cougars in contention on numerous occasions. Co-captains Brendan Allen and Steve Sheldon along with the help of other seniors Jim Knowlton, Kevin Barry, Russell Ahern, Dan Ahern, Jeff Gallagher and Harry See provided an inspiration to the underclassmen in keeping the team unified.
The Junior Varsity squad also had a very productive season which should strengthen the Varsity team in years to come.

The Winter Track Team posted its best season ever in 1978 with a record of five wins, three losses and one tie. The team was led by co-captains Bill Welch and Barry Fitzgerald. Seniors John Wells, Dan Johnedis, Jay Maloney and David Adamy all proved essential to the team’s success. Key point getters throughout the season were David Sheehan, Bob Wilson, Kevin Yahnian, Allan Dillingham, Craig Martarano, Andy Parece and Mark Sturzo.
High points of the season were Martarano’s league record tying 5.6 seconds in the 50 yard dash, and Sheehan’s league leading 9:42 two mile run. Much credit must be given to this years coaching staff, first year head Coach Ship Stott, Mr. Tom McDonough and Mr. Jack Fawcett.

This junior was medalist for the North Shore area qualifying for the state tournament at Essex CC, Manchester, where he shot a 75. Mike admits this was by far his finest golfing achievement. Last summer, he qualified for the CYO tournament, but was ousted in the first round. His brother, Sean, ninth-grader, was also a CYO qualifier in the 13-year-old group. Mike plays as member of Pocasset on the Cape. He plans to enter this year’s CYO competiion and the New England Juniors.

Omega
The 1978 Omega staff, under the direction of Mr. Mackiewicz and Mr. Gramling, has taken upon itself, as previous Omega staffs have done, the task of preserving an experience spanning the past four years. We have tried to capture the spirit of Austin in one hundred and twenty pages which occasionally appeared excessive, but usually proved insufficient. It is at this time that we would like to thank all contributors and photographers, especially Mr. J. McCarthy and Mr. T. McDonough, without whom this publication might not have been completed. We hope you enjoy this edition of the Austin yearbook as much as we have enjoyed preparing it.

PHILIP A. WHARTON Dy Sift 465 Franklin St. Reading
It was the time of year again for class reunions and received an invitation to attend the fifteenth annual reunion of the Austin Prep Class of 1978. Since hadn’t been to the previous fourteen reunions, decided that it might be fun to attend. left the night of December 28 free, and when the date finally arrived, drove away from my home with high hopes. had my first encounter with some of my former classmates when was passed on the Route 129 exit ramp by Tim Doherty, Rich DeSantis, Dan Gidley and Larry Hansford, all hurrying to be on time for the reunion banquet.
When arrived at the school looked at the guest list, and noticed several people were missing. Among these were John Martin, Tracy Sabella, Mark Drossos, Craig Dogherty, Jack Coady, Paul Franchi, John Capua, Bob Sutherland, Bob Morse, Jack Galvin, Steve LaCreta, and Ken Keefe. Kevin Wythe told me that they were going to John Going’s house party tonight and weren’t going to be able to attend the reunion.
The next two people saw were Paul Cappucci and John Gmelch, who had been respectively the president and vice-president of the Class of 1978. Paul had since become Chairman of the Board of New England Aquarium, and John had become President of Yale University. They told me that most of the class had shown up and decided to try to renew some old acquaintances. Larry Thiel, Wally Stowell, Steve Boyd and their wives were seated at the first table. stopped to talk with them for a few minutes and learned that they all had become New Hampshire highway patrolmen. When asked them about the empty chair at their table, they told me it had been reserved for Dave Coleman, who probably wouldn’t make it because his tiger-training job at the Stoneham Zoo left him little free time. also learned that Mike Conneilly and Rich Novo couldn’t attend because they were playing in the finals of their country club’s cupball tournament.
said good-by to them and walked over to the next table where the spirits were high and the cheer was flowing. Jim Callan, Tom “Fuzzy” Richardson, Jim Holland and John Drugan were seated there and they all seemed bubbling with excitement. Jim Callan owned a successful usedcar dealership and could be seen driving a new car every two or three months. The others, learned, operated a large chain of liquor stores and barber shops.
At another table found John Blottman, Paul Burns, Steve Foley and Paul Gracyk, who had all become partners in an accounting firm. They were in competition with Dave Pulson, Dave Gravina and Paul Chotkowski whose company specialized in filing tax returns in Classical Latin. They told me that Michael deBethencourt was writing classical music and that Dave Lemire had just taken out a patent on a ‘’Touch-tone”’ calculator. Dan Martin had become a conductor of the esteemed Reading High Symphony Orchestra. Gary Spahl, David Monis, and Peter O’Brien were all members of this fine ensemble.
Mike Judge, Mike Porter, Mike Martin, and Mike McKee were at the fourth table visited. The Judge and Martin Publishing Company had gained much exposure through its printing of revealing books and magazines. Porter’s Handwriting Analysis had been on the best-seller list for several weeks and learned that its author was writing a new book about his highly-successfu! escort service. Several other members of the class had entered the field of journalism. Among these
me that Dan Johnedis and John Wells had become j archeologists and recently established a dig in the softball field. They sought the fabled Lost Catapult of the Classics Club. They hired Charlie Gray’s construction company to do the major part of the excavating and three or four former classmates, Mike Nicolosi, Ed Walsh, and Jeff Stone were operating the backhoe and front-end loaders. Jay informed me that he had seen Blaize Conte dancing on a table and decided to look for him.
walked around for several minutes until saw Blaize Conte, and he was indeed on a table. However, he was jogging, not dancing. He stopped running long enough to tell me that he was getting in shape for the Olympic marathon trials. told him that he had been jogging on roast beef from Bill Bartley’s Catering Service, a division of Bill Bartley’s Bar & Grill. He assured
were Lance Poirier who was a reporter for the National Catholic Digest Spotlight Team. John Vanderbilt and Jim Passmore had co-authored a book entitled Space Exploration. Tom Welling wrote a book on Japanese culture. also learned that Bill Winnett had started to write a history of our alma mater, and that Joe! Mutchler had published a nuclear physics text for college students.
Mike McKee had undergone a great change since his high school days. He had become an executive in a paper weight company and president of the local Elks Lodge. He said that he had followed the advice of John Bowers, Al Chase, and Jason Smith and had joined the John Birch Society. John, Al and Jason were all distinguished members of the local chapter. They had to leave early because they had all left their children with babysitters and were anxious to get home.
As left them, bumped into Jay Maloney, who me he was already aware of this. He then went on had become an advertising executive for Brian to inform me that Kevin Fogarty and Frank Nagle Kelley’s company, Coliseum Tours, Inc. Jay told were employed as bouncers at Bartley’s Bar. In addition, Bill Pierce and Phil MacMillan were working at the restaurant as bartenders. At this same table, Dan McCarthy was complaining that the roast beef was tough and that he would have preferred pork chops.
Leaving Mr. Conte to his jogging, meandered around the dance floor, and bumped into Mark Scire and Paul Smith’s sister, who were with Paul Smith and Pat MacNamara’s sister, and Pat MacNamara and Dan McLeod’s cousin and Dan McLeod and Mark Scire’s sister’s uncle’s wife. They were so involved in the dance decided to move on. caught sight of Jeff Mulligan who was seated at the table nearest the band. He motioned for me to come over, so decided to see what my old friend had been up to. Bill Welch and Bill Gallagher were also seated at his table. There were two empty chairs, one of which was reserved for Barry Fitzgerald. Barry was the lead singer for
“Fitz and the Memories’’, the seventies revival group, which was providing the entertainment. The other was for Brendan Trainor, a dancer for the band. Bill Gallagher showed me a picture of his trophy room. It was full of stuffed game which he had shot. The room was dominated by the heads of large moose. As looked up, saw Bill Welch and Jeff leaving with two of the waitresses.
Jim Knowlton, Bill Blanchard, and Joe Parisi were standing next to Jeff’s table. They had travelled from Jim’s Bow L Ranch in Texas for the reunion. Bill Blanchard had just won the ‘‘hoss’’ roping contest in the National Rodeo Championship. Jim’s ranch, under the direction of Joe Parisi, had become famous for its thoroughbred studs. While talking to them | was interrupted by John Murano, who wanted to sell me a raffle ticket.
A boisterous table on the other side of the cafeteria suddenly caught my attention. Some
members of the1985 World Champion Straps were seated there, namely, John Kelly, Chris Murphy, Steve Sheldon, and Brian McGann. was told by this group that Dave Caprio, Ron Zona and Jim Vieira had become members of a professional baseball team owned by Joe ‘’Charlie O”’ DiBiase, who was also an assistant district attorney in northern Middlesex County. Leaving them, noticed that Mike Winn and Peter Brown had gone home early and had left Paul Tucker and Mark Foley at their table. discovered that Paul had become a mailman in Billerica and that Mark owned and operated Rocky’s Gym. also found out that the reason Peter and Mike had left was because they were still upset about having coached Austin’s football team to an eleventh-place state finish, missing the top ten by one. Some of Austin’s athletes had fared better, however, as Chris Lumenello and
Mark LaForge were playing professional football and Steve Clarke and Tom Mansour were professional basketball stars.
After Paul had told me a few mailman stories, overheard Dave ‘’Cheeks’’ Finocchiaro talking to Ed Dombrowski. Ed had become a professional boxer with Cheeks as his trainer and Steve Mangano as his manager. His next assignment was to fight Abdul ‘‘Cement Face’’ O’Rourke, who was managed by Mike Tipping. Bill Gately, Dan Desharnais and Peter Hersee had become boxing promoters and were trying to sign Ed fora title match.
During the dinner was approached by Jeff Gallagher of Ahern, Ahern, Gallagher & Feingold, Inc. He asked me if | would consider becoming a junior partner in his law-firm. When asked him what type of cases his firm handled, he said that they specialized in free-agent cases and at the present time were negotiating N.H.L. contracts for Harry See, Brendon Allen, and Kevin Barry.
He also told me that his firm handled the contract disputes of two well-known actors, Bill Sanville and Frank O’Brien. Bill had to leave early so he could catch a plane to New York where his new play H-e-e-e-e-y B-i-i-i-| was opening that night. Frank wasn’t able to be at the reunion because he was in Hollywood filming his latest movie, F-r-a-a-a-a-n-k, which will be released at the end of the year. Bill and Frank are planning to join forces in a musical some time next year, and they hope to be assisted by the world famous stage designers Tim Tiernan and Dan Thompson.
Right after dinner, Paul Cappucci told me that Jim Immerman had called to say that he would be late, because he had gotten into a three-car accident, with Bob DaPrato and Dave Drown. He said that officers Al Butler and Dan Connelly wanted to arrest them all, but recognized them as former classmates, and let them go free. Steve Theophanis also phoned to say that he and Paul Feeley would be late because their Cadillac was at Gary Shepherd’s Garage getting a radiator hose replaced.
Not wanting to bother Paul any longer, yet still curious about where Mike McAuliffe was, asked Chuck Pangraze. had previously learned that Chuck and Mike were both professional golfers. He told me that Mike couldn’t attend the reunion because he was participating in the fourth round of the Colgate-Greg Lyperides Invitational Golf Classic.
About twenty minutes later, discovered, much to my surprise, that several other members of the Class of 1978 had opened businesses of their own. Pat Goes and Dave Routsis owned an adult book store and a chain of C.B. stores. Mike O’Sullivan was employed as a bookkeeper at Phil Johnson’s recently-formed encyclopedia company. Jim Orr and John Grande operated a rowboat and sailboat manufacturing company, while Bill Callahan ran a limousine service. Strangely enough, TomMatton and John Stafford were two of Bill’s drivers. Steve Thibeau, Paul Sardella, Brian Mills, and Ralph Scaduto were all employed by the world-renowned D’Apice Pasta Company. (Wednesday is D’Apice
Spaghetti Day). In recent years, the company’s well-dressed president had gained a reputation as an international playboy.
Suddenly, heard some commotion across the room. Apparently Steve Pantalone, the janitor, was yelling at David Adamy, Igor Emelianoff, Joe Murphy and Jim Kelley for drawing a chess board on their table. Later saw Igor with a can of Ajax and a sponge.
As prepared to leave, felt glad that had attended my class’s fifteenth reunion. saw many of my old classmates had changed a great deal and that others had changed very little. Some were engaged in occupations which seemed well-suited to them, even as they were in high school, while others had chosen careers that no one would have imagined them in fifteen years ago. enjoyed conversing with friends whom | had not seen since graduation and whom | was unlikely to see again in the near future. You see, as president of the first high school yearbook publishing company in the Soviet Union, have little free time. even had to leave the reunion early, in order to catch up on some work so | could meet a deadline. There was still an hour remaining when retrieved my coat from the heap of those which had been knocked off the rack. As entered the lobby, took one last look into the cafeteria. noticed that Philip Wharton and Kevin Helliwell were exchanging greetings with a couple of friends. It occured to me that they must have just arrived.
Throughout this narrative, the author’s identity has been a mystery, and perhaps it should remain so. Yet the truth will out, and a secret cannot stay a secret for long. And so it is revealed to you that am none other than the Senior Section editor of the 1978 Omega, Mark Barrett.
