This yearbook is a product of students, for students, about students and their lifestyle at Austin Prep School — a plush, but not overly ostentatious private preparatory school for boys, snuggled in the New England hills north of Boston. This staff has endeavored to capture a bit of our years here in print for us to remember in future years. We hope you enjoy reading this with as much feeling as we put into it. The

Basketball pictures? Who’s he kidding!

As a transition from Activities to Athletics, the yearbook staff wants to present this page as a tribute to a student who has done more for this school than any other member of our class. In four years, Peter Paicos has unselfishly and tirelessly given to each and every one of us in his dedication to the art and science of training — teaching us to respect and care for our bodies. This small tribute (which your photographic reluctance has hindered greatly) to you is just our small thanks to you for an effort few have realized has been given, and even fewer have appreciated. We know. and we appreciate You. and we salute You. Thank You, Peter.

The 1976 football season for Austin Prep was a long and trying one. Austin managed only one victory versus Methuen while dropping the other eight contests to the hands of their tough Merrimack Valley Conference opponents. Dispite the losses, the Cougars fought hard all season and gained the respect of their rivals. The team was led by tri-captains Steve Burke, Mark Govoni and Dan Shannon. Tony Santullo, John Holland, Bill Christiansen, Dan Griffin, Dave Parella and Dave Johnson ran the offense, while Ken Dipetro, Peter Collins, Jim Walsh, Kurt Meyer, Paul Tucker and Mike Winn led the stalwart defense. No opposing team took the Cougars lightly, but unfortunately this was not shown in Austins final record.

This was the first year Austin Prep competed in the Merrimack Valley Conference. They made an impressive debut by upsetting the Andover High Warriors.
The Austin Cougars progressed throughout the season in not skill, but also in spirit. Austin went through extensive conditioning under head coach James Kelly and the able assistance of Father Johnson. With hard work and a lot of determination the Soccer Team finished the season with an unexpected 3-11-2 record. The wins came over more established teams such as Andover, Methuen, Chelmsford, and Tewksbury.
Throughout the season great efforts were provided by goalie Brian Hebard, defensive captains Bill Gallagher and Jim Parolin. A winning effort was also supplied by Ken McKee, Tom Woodford, Tom O’Brien, John Smith, and Tom Mansuer on defence; Gary
See, Chris Murphy, and Rich Scanlon on affense.
The upcoming season looks very promising with many outstanding players returning. To the underclassmen returning we wish you the very best of luck.

This was the year the Austin Prep Cougars proved to themselves and to their opponents what a superior team they really were. The fired up Austin team finished the season with a 8-2 record. To finish a great season Austin Prep Won the State Meet in Division 4.
We would like to sincerely thank Coach Lehane, and Mr. McDonough for their help and leadership. A super effort was shown by Capt. Paul Reinzo, and by Blaize Conte; next year’s leader.

The 1976 Freshman football season saw another tough season bring many personal rewards, as the team won impressive victories against McCarthy Junior High of Chelmsford, Billerica, Dracut, and Central Catholic. The season ended with an awards ceremony and dinner r hosted by the Parents of the team members.
Steve Nawn: Exhausted after a tough race; but ready to go again when Coach calls.

The Austin Prep Winter Track team enjoyed its most successful season ever in the brief history of the sport, posting a 3 wins, 6 losses dual meet record, good enough for a tie for sixth place in the Merrimack Valley Conference. The team was led by its captain, Senior Paul Rienzo, who turned in a stunning 9:51 two mile race time, the best in the league this year by far, and good enough for a second place finish in the State Class C championships. The solid nucleus of the team was its Senior contingent — Jim Glockling, John Farina, Chris Kiley, Steve Thompson, Steve Nawn, and Jim Lindsay — who were often forced to switch events because of the injuries which plagued the underclassman corps on the squad. The hard work and effort put in by Coach Bruce Lehane bore a crop of outstanding underclassmen — Allen Dillingham, Dave Sheehan, Kevin Yahnian, Robert Wilson, Billy Gallagher, and Bill Welch — who lend real promise to a bright Track future.

Warm-ups: essential preparation before any race.

Paul Rienzo: Star distance runner of the Winter Track team, placed second in the State Class C meet in his two mile speciality, ran a 9:51 earlier this season, best in the league.

Kurtis Meyer soars to outjump his taller opponent.
The 1976-77 Basketball season was the best in Austin’s brief history of play in the Merrimack Valley League. Sparked by Center Kurtis Meyer with a 17.3 per game average and returning All-Star Guard Ted Coppinger with a 17.2 per game average, the team scored at a league leading 63 points per game and strong fifth place finish in the league. The Junior Varsity ran to an impressive 17 wins in twenty games, good enough for third place in the league.
The tough Austin Prep offense inspired the Of-
ficials to rise to new heights.

Final record: 5th place in Merrimack Valley won 11 lost 9
The Freshman Basketball team enjoyed its first winning season in eight years by posting a 10-7 record. The young cougar kittens enjoyed wins over Lawrence, Chelmsford-Parker, Dracut, Minuteman Regional, Wilmington, Northeast Regional, Central Catholic (twice), and Bedford (twice). Weather hampered the schedule, but the young team hung tough against allegedly superior teams. The team was led by Bob Brigida (17.0 points per game), Dave Blackett (13.5 points per game), and Chris Nolan (11.0 points per game). What these freshmen lacked in size and prior experience, they more than made up for in quickness and desire.

Austin Prep has Co-Ed athletics! Under the inspiration and guidance of Coaches Father Arthur Johnson and Mr. Jay Dowd, the Ski team compiled a record of 5 wins in 12 races, highlighted by two victories over both Methuen and St. John’s Prep. Amassing the highest point totals for the season were Steve Hoar, Cliffy Simoneau, and Dave DeSantis. The girl racers were Sue Manning, Mary Houlne, Debbie Manning, and Sue MacMillan. The two racing Courses were the Merrimack Valley Ski Area in Methuen and Bradford Ski Area in Bradford. Exceptional underclassmen returning for future seasons (if the snow comes, too) include Dave DeSantis, Chris Poole and Larry Hansford.

The 1976-77 Merrimack Valley League season saw Austin Prep return to the familiar role of a strong second place finish (15 wins, 3 losses) in the strongest conference in the Division I] of Massachusetts school boy Hockey. The season saw five skaters among the top ten in scoring (Tom Carr, Thom Lawler, Tony Santullo, and Jack McDonald). Hosting its’ first Christmas Hockey tournament, Austin Prep fell in the finals to perennial Division powerhouse Malden Catholic. The League coaches voted Tom Carr and Thom Lawler to the League All-Star First Team. The team easily qualified for the State Tournament action again, and the very powerful Junior Varsity skated to a 13 wins, 1 loss, 2 ties record under the skillfull direction of Coach Paul Powderly. Coach Bishop developed many fine underclassmen to insure future success for the Skating Cougars. This team produced three 100 + point career scorers — Thom Lawler, Tom Carr, and Tony Santullo, the first team in the history of the Merrimack Valley to do so.

No man can revealto you aught but that which already Lies half asleep in the dawning of your knowledge.
The teacher who walks in the shadow of the temple, among his followers, gives not of his wisdom but rather of his faith and his Lovingness.
If he is indeed wise he does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather Leads you to the threshold of your oun mind.
The astronomer may speak to you of hts understanding of Space, but he cannot give you his under4 :
The musician may sing to you of the nhythm which 44 in af space, but he cannot give you the ear which arrests the rhythm nor the voice that echoes 4t.
And he who is versed in the science of numbers can teLl of the regions of weight and measure, but he cannot conduct you thither.
Fon the vision of one man Lends not its wings to another man.
And even as each one of you stands alone Ain God's knowledge, 50 must each one of you be alone in his knowkedge of God and in his understanding of the earth.
