Once again Fr. Johnson is offering his services to the future drivers of Massachusetts. Fr. Johnson is not only the classroom instructor, but he also accompanies the students for the actual driving experience. Fr. Johnson teaches those enrolled in the six week course about the pleasures and the hazards of driving. The classroom instruction of 30 hours consists of learning about the parts of a car and hypothetical driving situations, information given by information film strips, and driving experiences, the students are taken out into the streets of Reading and the surrounding towns. Such things as parallel parking, driving in highway and city traffic are practiced and thus give the students commuting from far away towns the skill needed to drive to and from school.

The Russian Club, now headed by Mr. Hennessy, offers a program of social and cultural events aimed at acquainting the students with the ways of Russia. During the past summer, members toured Russia and plan to do the same in the near future. Members are: Mark Hulse, Paul Rienzo, Mark Thomas, Rick MacMaster, Sterling Giles, Mike Phillips, Jim Barbaro, Ron Burse, Nick Deltoro, Matt Evangelista, Tom Laurakas, Al Luciano, and Larry Hauser.

Under the supervision of (Commissioners Adamo and DeFlorio, the intramural system was expanded once again to admit a new sport. This year, due in part to a large number of interested students, basketball was begun. Five teams comprised the league, with matches every Monday.
The Bombers were this years Softball League Champions. They ended their very successful season undefeated with a record of 9-0-0.
Due to the large number of street hockey teams (13) the league has been divided into 2 divisions, the EAST and WEST. This year the race to the playoffs promises to be tight with no teams more than 2 games out of first.

The Austin Prep Oratory and Debate Club directed by Mr. Brain, offers its members an opportunity to improve their speech patterns through the CYO Oratory League. The debate part of the club offers an opportunity to debate with other High School teams, current topics of importance. Through communication, understanding each other is their goal—oratory and debate are the vehicles used by them to gain understanding. Members are: Joe Sciacca, Mr. Brain, John Krazneckweiz, Mark Genovese, Joe Huard, Tom Woodford, John Canney, John Crickett.

Austin’s Crosscountry Team, its second year in the Merrimac Valley Conference, finished with a 4 win and 5 loss record. The Varsity team was lead by Mark Arsenault and Kevin Callahan, followed close by Bob Cannon. An injury to Roland Phillips prevented him from competing. The J.V.’s were lead by Joe Coneeny. In individual competition, Kevin Callahan excelled: 16 in the State and 10 in the League meets.

Mr. Dowd: “If he cuts one second off his time
we could win the race.”
Under the supervision of Fr. Johnson and Mr. Dowd the Ski Team made a respectable showing in the Merrimack Valley Conference. Unfortunately it worked out on a combined basis; the boys being comprised of students from Austin; the girls half being supplied by Nazareth. The boys were in sufficient number and expertise to win their portion the meets. Unfortunately the girls were good and tried their hardest but they too few in number.

Second year in a new conference. .. A new Varsity coach. ... Coming off a disappointing innaugural year, fifth place tie in a six team league. Graduated seven key seniors. .. All the signs were being read for a very disappointing season for the Cougars in Hockey. In retrospect, it turned out to be the greatest season ever, winning 10, losing 5, and tieing 3, for 23 points and a third place finish in a much improved league.
Sparked by defenseman Charlie Antetomaso’s 13 goals, and Freshman Tom Carr’s 23 points (placing him in the league’s top ten scorers), the team scored a school record 55 goals, while on Defense, Goalies Steve Vasaturo and Ken Chisholm allowed a new low, 43 goals in 18 games, a 2.40 per game, also school records.
The team notched three victories against each of the three bottom teams in the league, Lawrence Central, Chelmsford, and defending League Champion Andover. Against the iron of the league, inexperience surfaced, and they could only manage a weak 1 win, 5 loss, 3 tie
record for a mere 5 points of a possible 18.
The entire season could be wrapped up in one summary, the last five seconds of the second Wilmington game, when sophomore Mark Sheldon (11 goals, 10 assists, 21 points) missed a penalty shot and Wilmington won a bitter 3-2 victory.
Captains Tom Murphy, the only senior regular (5 goals, 14 assists, 19 points) and Ronnie Nelson (5 goals, 7 assists, 12 points) assisted the new coaching staff, and the spirit of the players and fans reached new highs, as week after week, the followers of the Cougars drove up to the Billerica Forum to watch the Hockey team mature.
The team missed qualifying for the state tournament by a single loss, though their tough play (1 loss in their last seven games) of an underclassman dominated team gave warning to the Merrimack Valley Hockey League. _.. The Cougars will be on the war path next winter.

If it is true that it is not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game, it is safe to say that the 1973—1974 Merrimack Valley season, as far as Austin Prep is concerned, was indeed a season of learning how to play the game.
Senior captain Jim Griffin sparked a sometimes stagnant offense, averaging close to 13 points per game. The defense, however, set several negative records which we hope will stand for long time.
Lacking a facility at the school, the Basketball program, in its very existence, is a tribute to many dedicated players, who face long and cold hours in another school’s gym late at night while they struggle to learn the fundamentals of the game. The best testament to this is the fact that the best games of the season were played at the end of the schedule.
Having a solid nucleus of Juniors around whom this year’s team was molded, stalwarts like Tommy Murphy, Louis Bouvier, Tom Mortenson, Glen Aducci, Artie Fosse, Pat Murphy, and Terry Burke, the future next year looks bright, as the team returns from the valley of defeat into the heights of a potential winning season.

Although the freshman basketball team did not enjoy a winning season they did achieve some degree of success. Lacking in size and playing experience, they enjoyed victories over Northeast Regional, Wilmington and Andover-East. With the exception of AndoverWest the freshmen held their own against every team they faced as witnessed by losing four games by a total of five points. Coach Larry Guidetti and assistant Pat Simmons leave much hope for the future in the persons of Rich Marcotte, Steve Burke and hardrebounding forwards Rick Norton and Kurtis Meyer.

Austin’s first season in the Merrimack Valley Conference proved to be a disappointing showing. Although well coached the team was plagued with injuries from the start. The year was started off with impressive victories over Central Catholic and Methuen. The team next traveled to Andover, suffering a disappointing 35-6 defeat. The Cougars faced three more league powerhouses following that defeat, and dropped all to Billerica, Chelmsford and Wilmington. The team won two of their last three games, beating Arlington Catholic and Tewksbury but losing a heart-breaker to Dracut 6-0. The Cougars wound up the season with four wins and and five losses.

On Sat. Sept. 22, 1973, The Austin Prep Cougars kicked off the new season with a 12-6 victory | ‘$b over Central Catholic of Lawrence. After an early he, Aes See ae ey touchdown by Central, Chuck Gaudet found Jim hey Dig 4 al eee Bat oP Lee Griffin open late in the third quarter. On the very ; next play, Tom Murphy went in for the score. Later, Austin recovered a Central fumble and soon Bill Kiely went in for the score.

On Sat., Sept. 29, Austin went up against Methuen. The game was mostly an offensive battle with a return kickoff by Methuen, and a 75 yard run on a half-back draw by Steve Webster which proved to be the game winner: Austin 26, Methuen 24.Next, On Oct. 8, Austin faced the powerhouse of the league, Andover. What started out as a defensive battle soon turned into Andover’s game. Late in the game on a touchdown pass Bill Kiely scored Austin’s only score of the day with the final being Andover 36, Austin 6.

Sat. Oct. 13, 1973—Austin at Billerica. B 20-0. Austin received a decisive shut out at the hands of Billerica. Billerica’s Mike Dorrington picked off Gaudet’s pass and scrambled to the Austin end zone. The Billerica team scored twice more to ice the game. Sat. Oct. 20, 1973—Austin at Chelmsford. C 14-6. Chuck Gaudette tossed a TD. pass to Ed Misk, putting the Cougars on top 6-0. Chelmsford’s next drive put the Lions on the board 7-6. A fourth period interception in the end zone put the game of out of reach for the Cougars.

Sat. Oct. 27, 1973—Austin vs. Wilmington. In the third quarter, Austin was forced to punt from deep in their own territory. Wilmington started on the Austin 48 and scored two plays later. Sat. Noy. 3, 1973—Austin vs. Tewksbury. A 8-0, Dan Agati plunged in from the one yard line for the score. Austin completed the game’s scoring with a two point conversion pass, Chuck Gaudet to Jim Griffin.

Sat. Nov. 11, 1973—Austin vs. Dracut. D 6-0. Once more, a tough Austin defense stymied the powerful drives of a strong team, only to lose late in the fourth quarter, 6-0. Sun. Nov. 18, 1973—Austin vs. Arlington Catholic. A. 20-12. Austin, behind the powerful running of backs Bill Kiely, Bob Gagnon, and Steve Webster beat Arlington Catholic 20-12.
The Junior Varsity was coached by Sandy Ruggles. It was his first year here at Austin and the J.V. team did not make his welcome a warm one. They suffered many a close defeat, never losing by more than one touchdown all season long. The team had many standouts this year such as Junior quarterback Ken McConnell, Sophomore fullback Mark Brady and halfback Brian Pacheco, all of which will be great assets to next year’s Varsity team. Their 2 win 4 loss record is quite deceptive of all the hard work that went into this year’s Junior Varsity team, from which they will profit from next year.

Quarterback Govoni picks up some yardage against Central Catholic.

Due to lack of interest the 1973 Freshman Football Team endured a disappointing season. Although co-captains Steve Burke and Mark Govoni tried their best, it was not enough. The two FRESH MAN needed nine more players to back them up. They ended their season with a 2 win 6 losses and one tie, ruining the 17 game unFOOTBALL beaten record of the three previous Freshman classes.
