This book was made possible by the following people. The Staff was composed of Jim Miller, Mike Gillen, Bill Leahy, Steve Chiulli, and Brian Boutelier. These people were aided to an immeasurable extent by the following little people who devoted their time and effort without any thought of reward. These people were, Bob Arena, John Cronin, Billy Locke, Jeff Blumsack, Don Yasi, Mark Banda and Steve Peterson. Those industrious individuals who made this book financially possible were, Ed Dee, Bob Gill, David McConnell, Brian Murphey, Mike Neacy, Joe Patterson, Joe Pirrotta, Marty Stafford, Phil Sudenfield, and Paul Swindlehurst. Special Thanks are due to our photographers, Jim Banda and Bob Pelosi; and to our advisors, Bernard Coughlin and Vito Adamo. Dave Querze was the Photo-librarian and Lay-out Assistant. Keith D’Entremont was the Editor-in-Chief. No one else helped.

He is exposed to rules and to regulations, and to the wishes of others. Often beyond his scope of comprehension.

Football

Austin Prep’s football team was racked with injuries which cancelled what could have been a most successful season. The team ended up with 2 wins and 7 losses.

The Cougars opened the season with a loss to league tri-champion Marian High. The Marian team completely outplayed Austin as they won 35-6.

Behind the quarterbacking of Joe Kelly and the running of Junior fullback Mike McCarron, Austin won their next two games beating Columbus 20-6 and Cathedral 16-6.

After these two victories the team was plagued with injuries to key players, resulting in six defeats. These defeats came at the hands of Fenwick (0-28), Matignon (12-22), and to the other two league title winners, Spellman (0-26) and Malden Catholic (6-53).

The team also dropped two non-league contests, first to Lawrence Regional (0-12), and then to Arlington Catholic (0-8).

This year’s cross country team finished with an improving 2-4 record. The team lost its first meet to Dominic Savio 34-23 but came back with a good win against Matignon 23-33. The next two meets went in a loss-win combination. The Cougars lost a tough one to Pope John 29-27 and then decively whipped Arlington Catholic 20-40. Austin’s cross country team closed out the season with two losses, one to Don Bosco 34-23 and the other to Marion 43-20.

There was one very bright spot on the team this year in senior Mark Duggan who breezed through the Catholic Central League undefeated. Duggan ran in five post-season meets which resulted in the following; first at the league meet, first in the Division 4 State Championships, first in the C.Y.O. Championships, sixth in the State Finals, and sixteenth in the New England Championships!

Ski Racing

Lack of snow this winter has been a constant problem facing the ski team, the newest varsity sport at Austin. So much interest was generated by last year’s ski club that a team was formed from students from both Austin Prep and Nazareth Academy. When snow did fall, meets were held on Bradford Hill, Bradford, Mass. Members of this year’s ski team were G. Hoar, M. Frazier, @. Larsen, Re Borsetti, Kk Riney, D. Solomon (team captain), T. Sheehan, S. Campinell, 5. Hardy, D. Mazza, R. Matthews, 5. Lightbown, J. Pierce, H. Cohan, P. Byrne, L. Frazier, S. Sheldon, N. Kenyon, E. Cronin, A. Herligy, C. Bradely, L. Landrogan, J. Rosburg.

Basketball

Mike Dolan taps off against Northeast Regional.
Pat Simmons goes for two points.

Austin’s Basketball Cougars struggled through a disappointing season this year despite a tremendous amount of hustle on the part of all members of the team. Junior Pat Simmons was the stalwart on the offensive team, averaging about seventeen points per game. Mike Dolan, averaging fifteen points, was second. Third was Mark Duggan, averaging fifteen points. Coach Tom Enright was instrumental in keeping the team’s spirit up, along with supplying the basic skills needed in playing a sound game of basketball. When the Cou- gars won, they did so convincingly. When they lost, it was often by a minute margin. Austin’s hopes for next season, which rest on the ability of a relatively small team, are to score excessively and work a fast break type of offense. These were the points that the team worked on this year, but they had a hard time changing their style of play from that of centering around a tall man.

Austin and Cathedral players scramble for the puck in front of Cathedral’s net.

Austin Prep’s hockey team started out with high hopes of making the Division II Tourney and also of making a-run for the league championship. Lack of practice time, however, hampered the team’s hopes.

Highlights of the year included Ted Quinn’s four-goal performance in the opening game against a young Dominic Savio team.

The goal tending of Paul Grasewicz and the defensive work of Fred Nelson, Bob Gill and Ben Quirk accounted for the third lowest goals-scored in the league.

One of the more thrilling events this season was when the Cougars led the league-leading, undefeated Don Bosco team 1-0 at the end of the second period. Tom Murphy set up the Austin goal which was scored by Billy Locke. Don Bosco later came back for a 2-1 win... the closest any team came to beating them in the first nine games.

The Austin Prep Student Council is the official means by which the students participate in the supervision of their own affairs. It gives the students experience in leadership and participatory democracy. Through their homeroom representatives, students can express opinions on various subjects. In turn, this is compiled, discussed, and presented to the school administration.

Specifically, it grants charters to all student organizations and renders financial assistance to clubs needing it. In addition to this, the Student Council sponsors school-wide activities such as dances, concerts, and assemblies.

Omega

This year the Omega moved from the fourth floor to a larger office on the ground floor. While in the new office, we took over the job of keeping a photo-library in which all photographs of Austin are cataloged and filed.

We also split the Omega organization into two divisions, a business staff under Mr. Adamo which is in charge of the financial end of the book, and an editorial staff under Mr. Coughlin, which is in charge of producing and editing the yearbook.

Several members of the editorial staff attended the Boston University Scholastic Press Association conference last fall where the 1971 Omega was awarded highest achievement.

This year we have added a spring supplement to the yearbook. The supplement will cover all spring sports and activities as well as graduation.

“Austin Preparatory School is modern secondary school dedicated to meeting the social, cultural, athletic and academic needs of young men in the average to the superior range of intellectual ability. As a Catholic school, its philosophy of education quite naturally is based upon Christian principles.”

“In order that this statement of educational philosophy be not merely an idealist expression of an unattainable goal, Austin Prep is committed to investigate and evaluate any and all new educational ideas, methods and programs which will assist in making the ideal of personalized and individualized instruction more and more a reality.”

“The curriculum at Austin Prep is designed to meet the interest, needs and aptitude of its students according to their ability levels. In some cases the courses differ only in the rate and/or depth in which the subject matter is treated. In other cases the subject matter differs so substantially that the course is restricted to a particular ability level and is offered under its own distinct title.”

“The word “preparatory” in the school’s name should not be interpreted as limited to “preparation

for college’. The school’s curriculum is designed with a broader and more important view in mind; that is, “preparation for life’. Although approximately 90% of each graduating class enters college immediately after graduation, the school recognizes that there are some students whose true vocation in life will not require a college education. Consequently, the school does not feel a sense of frustration or failure if some of its students elect not to go to college.”

“Austin Prep firmly believes that discipline is basically the intelligent and well ordered use of a persons free will. It follows, therefore, that only the individual himself can effectively determine his own discipline.”

“The school has rules, regulations and guidelines to establish standards for good order, to preserve the rights of others, and to protect the student from his own indiscretions. However, these rules are kept to a minimum, reflecting a lack of need.”

Track

The track team, captained by Paul Collins, posted an overall record of 4 wins, 4 losses and 17 tie. The team was lead by a senior contingent of Mark Duggan, Joe Lecesse, Paul Doherty, Mike Vacca, and Bill Strileckis. Winning didn’t come easily to this year’s team. The boys had to work hard all season to stay within a few points of their competitors. The suspense rose to heights at three different meets in which the final races, the relays, decided the outcome of the meets. Austin won two of these events— thus winning two meets and tied their last meet—a rarity in the sport of track.

On April 18, Terry Burke threw the shot put for Austin competing against Arlington Catholic High School.

The team, under the leadership of Coach James Ashby, played exciting golf this season. Although faced with strong opposition, the team, captained by Rick Hamilton, finished a most successful season with 14 wins, 1 tie and 5 losses.
