We gain experience ... for relationships with others,
... for leadership in our pursuits,
Austin is a force which pushes toward this personal fulfillment.
A spirit which gives, pulls together, grows, strengthens.
Austin is the Spirit of its members.

The 1970 Austin football team showed tremendous strength, drive, and determination, and these qualities, combined with skill in running, passing, and blocking, produced a great winning team, the most successful in the school’s history. Their 6-3 record captured third place in the Catholic Central League, home of the class “‘C” champion Cardinal Spellman, and their offensive point total was second only to Spellman.
After an initial 30-8 romp over Arlington Catholic in which Dave Solomon returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for the first score, the Cougars “dedicated” the new Fr. Seymour Field with a convincing 18-0 shutout of a strong Pope John team. In the rain-soaked dedication game, the first touchdown to be scored on Austin soil was appropriately registered by the team’s cocaptain and Q.B. Paul Lyman.

Texas on the run!
The Marian game looked like a battle between Davids and Goliaths as the Cougars were at a great size disadvantage. However, determination and balanced attacks racked up their third victory of the season.
A two week vacation from action proved to be a big disadvantage as the Austin team, hampered by mental mistakes and bad breaks, suffered their first loss of the season 12-14 at the hands of Bishop Fenwick. Still not completely back together, the Cougars were again set back by an inspired Matignon team.
The Cougars reassembled for the next attack and drove through Christopher Columbus 44-26, with John Barron running in four touchdowns. The following week, their offense alive and pushing, the Cougars showed Cathedral how to play the game by defeating them 27-6. Now with a 5-2 record, Austin met the very powerful and undefeated Cardinal Spellman team and through a rash of injuries the Cougars held on, fighting back late in the game to finally be defeated 12-18.
Completing the very fast-moving season on the home field, Austin met a very confident Malden Catholic team and proved themselves by defeating M.C. by a score of 26-18.
The ’70 Austin football squad was a great team in the true sense of the word, containing many leaders and made up of a balanced attack and a solid defense. Much credit should be given to the coaches Larry Klimas, John Kelleher, and Joe Castiglione for their strong leadership and knowledge. Characterized by tough, dedicated players and a strong spirit to win, the Cougars of 1970 will be remembered for the first successful football season in Austin’s history—a 6 wins and 3 losses record assembled by a great team.

Cross Country
Due to a poor turn out, Austin’s cross country team was too small to have a successful season, competing in the strongest league in this state. Led by Captain Ken Swymer and coached by Mr. T. McDonough, the Cougars were able to keep all but one team from sweeping to victory. The season record was 0-8.
The Junior Varsity and Freshman teams give promise of a better record in the future with records of 2-6 and 3-5 respectively.

Basketball
Following the very successful football season, the eyes of Austin sports fans turned to the winter sports. As the green grass was covered with a blanket of snow, the players put on new hats and the fans moved to the warmer confines of gyms and arenas.
Varsity basketball coach Tom Enright returned to his duties looking forward to another winning season. Co-captains Paul Lyman & Bill Ludwig, and Cliff Bouvier were the only returning lettermen around which the team had to be built. Along with seniors Frank Burke, Mike Mimno, Mark Peterson, and Joe Bryant, the team consisted of Juniors Mike Dolan, Mark Duggan, and Dennis D’Agostino. Sophomores Pat Simmons and Sean Farrell were also there ready to step in when needed.
The Cougars began the season with a thrilling victory at the Jamboree over Our Lady’s. The team continued to play exciting basketball, but victories were not so easy to come by. Dom Savio twice and Pope John once defeated the fighting cagers in the first three games of the season...
... Super efforts by Cliff and the L&L combination were not good enough to overcome the strong opposition. The Cougars’ first victory came vs. a big N.E. Regional team that was unable to stop the good team play of Austin. Again it was a superb team effort that beat St. Columbkille in Austin’s second victory. The Cougars were unable to pick up another victory until the final game of the season against St. Clements.
The season’s final record of three wins and fifteen losses was quite deceiving as the loyal fans can attest to the exciting play and determination of the Cougars on the basketball court. SCOREBOARD

The Austin hockey squad of 197071 showed great determination in a season marked with many setbacks. It was a season of ups and downs for the Cougars. This year’s league had the good, the bad and the very good. Austin proved to be in the good category; however, they were not good enough to overpower the very good teams.
Times were not all bad for Austin, though. Despite losses against Matignon, Columbus and Don Bosco, the Cougars achieved success against Dom Savio, Hudson Cath. and Cathedral.
Front Row: E. Gordon, K. Crowley, R. Menard, R. Bennett, D. Davidson, K. Ottariano, K. Gagne, P. Grasewicz, S. Swanson. Back Row: R. Gill, F. Nelson, B. Quirk, D. Devine, R. Locke, A. McFague, J. Murphy, W. Drugan, G. Coach McDonough, Manager S. Osgood, S3 dionhice:
_..Close contests were the rule for games against Pope John, but the Cougars could not overcome the Pope’s power. Both games against the Everett team were lost by only one goal. The netmen were able to keep pace with all the other teams in the league except star-studded Matignon. The Cougars overpowered both Savio and Hudson, winning all four games by margins of at least four goals.
... Senior Co-Captains Ken Ottariano and Don Davidson led the predominatly underclassmen team. A bright spot of the season’s play was the work of the defensive team of Bob Gill and Fred Nelson in their attempt to help the strong efforts of Sophomore goalie Paul Grasewicz. Success in the future is assured with the continued efforts of Bill Locke, Ted Quinn, and Steve Swanson, along with returning lettermen Art McFague, Brian Gagne, and Ben Quirk. The future looks good for the Austin icemen.

Golf
The 1970 Austin Golf team, led by first year coach Mr. James Ashby, produced a good winning record and made a respectable showing in the league. The team was made up entirely of underclassmen, and so prospects are bright for the ’71 season as all will be returning. After losing 3 matches in a row, the team produced an impressive 5-game winning streak. The Cougars then split the last four, resulting in a 7-5 season.

Baseball
Led by a predominantly senior team, Austin enjoyed its most productive baseball season in the school’s history. The Cougars finished second in the league with an 11 and 5 record. The team was led by captain Bob VanLathem and other senior standouts Joe Pallotta and John Dignan. Austin overcame a 3-5 record early in the season and went on to finish with an eight game winning Streak. ..-

As a result of this fine finish, the Cougars qualified for the state tournament. In the primary round of action our team faced a tough Lynn Trade team, who won the game 1-0.
Through the superb coaching of Mr. Richard Scanlan, Austin displayed powerful batting, excellent fielding and strong pitching, the necessary combination for a winning team.

Track
The 1970 spring track squad proved that they would be a team to be reckoned with in the near future. Having lost many lettermen from the previous year, the small underclassmen team made a respectable showing against the larger and more experienced league teams. Lacking in depth and experience, the Cougars ran up a record of 3 wins against 5 losses. This was a “building year’? as many newcomers to the sport learned how to face strong competition.
Captain John Barron, while only a junior, was able to score an average of 13 points a meet in the long jump, 440, and low nung esha

Experimentation paid off in a variety of events as the track men moved around, trying and winning in amazing situations, some pleasant surprises coming from the younger members of the team. The combination of the experience gained and an increase in personnel leads one to be very optimistic about the Cougars of the future. Where there’s a will, there’s a way, and the Austin Track team has an overwhelming spirit to win.
