We Honor A Friend

Early in December of last year, one of Austin’s most dedicated and revered faculty members left to pursue missionary work in Peru. This departure of a man who assiduously kept records, wrote transcripts, edited report cards, and gave so freely of his time to everyone, created a void which will not soon be filled. It is with pride and gratitude that we co-dedicate this, The 1968 Omega, to Brother John Sheridan, a man who left us a legacy of apostolic ambition in giving of himself to those most in need, a man who is Austin,
PATIENCE, PRAGTICE .j: PERSISTENCE
Band

After months of practice the band under the direction of Fr. Kinsella put on its Christmas Concert. This, one of the most successful and well attended events of the year, was a tribute to the efforts of Fr. Kinsella and students. The concert was received so well, that further plans for a concert in the Spring were made.

“Let us go then, you and I, When the evening is spread out against the sky Like a patient etherised upon a table; Let us go through certain half-deserted streets, The muttering retreats
Of restless nights in one-night cheap hotels And sawdust restaurants with oyster shells”.
TS. ELIOF

Out from the endless myriad of polished corridors, with pride and knowledgable conviction.

Charging forth with blistered intensity and yet puddlewonderful wisdom.

Experience in living—with ourselves, our country and God.
What is Austin? Austin 1s personal fulfillment.

Dabbling in the fantasy of youth, striving to solve the mystery of maturity.

“I asked professors who teach me the meaning of life to tell me what is happiness. And I went to famous executives who boss the work of thousands of men. They all shook their heads and gave me a smile as though I was trying to fool with them. And then one Sunday afternoon I wandered out along the Desplaines river, And I saw a crowd .of Hungarians under the trees with their women and children And a keg of beer and an accordian.”

DEDICATION

“It is not enough to have good qualities it is necessary to use them for the demands of life.” Perhaps these words of Francois de la Rochefoucauld best testify to the formative labors of Fr. Burnell, Rector of Austin Preparatory School over the past five years.
The demands of a new school with its unpredictable exigencies, ponderous problems, onerous routines have only proven the quiet and deliberate qualities of our scholarly Rector. His sense of moderation and balance tempered by keen insights have created for student and teacher alike the refined environment required of scholastic achievement in a changing world.
It is, therefore, with appreciative thanks that the Class of 1968 — ever mindful that commensurate gratitude can never. be fully expressed — wishes to dedicate this Year Book to the Very Reverend George F. Burnell, O.S.A. as token of its appreciation for the steadfast devotion and unflagging service demonstrated during his administration as Rector of Austin Preparatory School.

Spirit Club

Under the guidance of Mr. Fralick, this group of Austin students has boosted the attendance of the student body at athletic events. Through their own sacrifice and effort, the members of the Spirit Club have greatly assisted in starting support for Austin. These students and their moderator deserve a great deal of credit, and it is hoped that their work will be continued in future years,
The Biology Club, under the auspices of President William Banville and ° faculty moderator Mr. Richard Fralick, provides for the student a closer
OfY U contact with the biological field of his interest. The program offers the member lab work, as well as supplementary films and slides.
Current Events

With the fast developing events of today’s world, it is necessary for the student to have a good insight, as to, the causes and effects of these events. The Current Events Club, under the moderation of Fr. Faix, provides an opportunity for Austin students to understand and discuss these happenings.
The Debate Society provides students, here at Austin, the chance to exercise ° and develope their abilities in debating. Senior Members: Richard Hoar, eC Atl f 4 5 Robert Seaver, Daniel Huggard, Stephen Willett, Salvatore Basta, Ernest Jones, Thomas Wilson.

Early in October, Austin held its most successful rally and dance. On the Friday eve previous to the Cathedral game, hundreds of students turned out to attend the goings-on. The rally began at seven with the introduction of the team, its captains Fred Fallon and Joe Woods, and its head coach, Mr. Klimas, After a few encouraging words from the coach, and the cheerleaders, the students proceeded to burn a Cathedral and a player in an exhibition of their feelings. The dance started at eight and lasted until eleven. Furnishing the sound was The Boston Common, a group which made the dance one of the most successful of the year. With such a success it’s needless to say the Cougars wouldn’t settle for less. On the morning after, Austin beat Cathedral for the first time and its first victory of the season.

In its first year as an actual activity of the school, the skiers of the Ski Club have shown a deep concern to making it a complete success. The members have planned several ski trips, and have financed them by running dances at Austin. It is hoped that this club will continue to function here at Austin.
