It was Saint Thomas Aquinas who said that a physician exercises his art by helping the nature of his patient to restore itself to health. Using this analogy, he went on to point out that the art of teaching is similar to the art of healing, but of a higher order. In education the teacher is the instrument, in the finest sense of that word, by which a student comes to a knowledge of truth. And just as a doctor does not transfer his own health to his patient, neither does a teacher transfer his learning, his knowledge to his students. Rather he leads them to a personal discovery of God, of his fellow men, and of the world.

MRS. MARIONA E.

The faculty of Austin Preparatory School is steeped in the wisdom of Aquinas and Augustine. Both priests and laymen have proven themselves to be teachers in the tradition of the past and alert to the exigencies of the present. They have shown themselves to be men and women of knowledge and learning. More importantly, they have proven themselves to be artists of the word, capable of calling forth from their students love and excitement for the lore of the past, the grandeur and misery of the present, and the promise of the future.

Austin’s newspaper, The Legend, strives to uphold high journalistic standards while presenting student news, opinion and sports.

In addition to newspaper correspondence program with neighboring high schools, The Legend has become a member of the Columbia Press Association, the National Scholastic Press Association, and the Catholic School Press Association.

Throughout the school year, the editors of The Legend try to find ways of improving their publication by attending journalism conferences such as the Emmanuel Journalism Workshop, the New Eng-

“It’s twelve feet from his bed to the bedroom door,” says Paul Krueger to John Carew, John Hoell, and Joseph Drotter, as Steve Meuse wanders around the jury room in disgust.

Guy Arena starts to sit down after a tiring argument with Steve Willett. (Behind the scenes are Stage Managers Stephen Brodecki, Philip Callahan and William Shakalis. In early March, the Blackfriars began a tradition of dramatic excellence with their opening of Reginald Rose’s “Twelve Angry Men” under the direction of Frater Patrick O'Neill, O.S.A.

A week after their three-night engagement at Austin’s theatre-in-the-round, Austin’s thespians entered their production in the Massachusetts High School Regional Drama Festival on March 18, when they qualified for the state finals by placing first in the competition. Also, membership in the Regional Cast was awarded to four Austin students for excellence in acting: Guy Arena, Joseph Drotter, Paul Krueger, and Steve Meuse.

of “Twelve Angry Men” was successful again, for the Blackfriars were named the State Drama Champions, surpassing the other sixty-six competing high schools. In addition to this, and to the several honors presented to Frater O'Neill for his excellent direction, co-stars Paul Krueger and Stephen Meuse, who were cited as two of the top seventeen student-actors in the state, receivd gold medals and certificates for their membership in the All-State Cast.

On April 21 and 22, Austin represented Massachusetts at the New England Drama Championships, and once again the Blackfriars presented a highly acclaimed performance of “Twelve Angry Men”, which was given an excellent rating.

Spirit and Poster Clubs

The purpose of the Spirit Club is to create at Austin a most important aspect of the student life, school spirit, by fostering activities designed to build within the student body a strong feeling of attachment to the school.

Closely allied with other activities is the Poster Club, under the direction of Father Murnane. The Poster Club assists the school by making pictorial diagrams intended to influence the students to attend major school events.

Shown here are the officers of the Spirit Club: Russell Lawson, Secretary; Joe Blanchette, President; Ken Retelle, Vice President; and Father Murnane, Moderator.

A. I TOO BOLD to suggest that many of us have felt the Savior’s presence in our own lives through His humble instrument, Father Bernard? It is so beautiful to witness the making of a saint. What holy delight was ours as we saw with our own eyes Christ take one of His chosen and mould him into a likeness of Himself. How God so loves to confound the strong, the proud, by taking one of His “weak” to enlighten and inspire us, to show us the path and to give us the courage to go on.

“Father Dunleavy seldom enjoyed good health. The many bouts of illness that he had in the seminary were perhaps the sign from God that his was to be a life of suffering through sickness. Yet, never, to my knowledge did his lips give even the least hint of complaint then or during his recent illness.

“All the influences of heredity, environment and personal encounters which so deeply affected Father Bernard's free decisions were forever known to God. Though at the time, any one of his actions might have appeared unrelated to another, in reality they were acted out under God's loving care. God brought him to final perseverance—and persevere he did, in a most magnificent manner.”

Excerpts from eulogy for Father Dunleavy by Father Michael McGinnis, O.S.A. It is to the Reverend Bernard J. Dunleavy, O.S.A., that this, the 1967 Omega, is gratefully and prayerfully dedicated by the students of Austin Preparatory School.
