Your Light We Shall See Light”
EmposseD ON THE COVER of the Omega is the shield or coat of arms of Austin Preparatory School. The open book with the words “Tolle Lege” (Take up and read) identifies an Augustinian school, for these words inspired Saint Augustine and led to his conversion. While the saltire cross symbolizes Saint Patrick, patron of the Archdiocese of Boston, the cross and crozier represent Saint Augustine, the patron of the school. In the upper section the water wheel comes from the arms of the Town of Reading; the two shells are from the personal arms of Richard Cardinal Cushing, instrumental in establishing the school.
Appearing on the scroll beneath the shield, the motto, “In lumine tuo videbimus lumen,” is used by Saint Augustine, quoting from the Psalms, to signify that in the knowledge of God we attain to true Knowledge and Wisdom.
When the shield, without the scroll, is placed within a circular periphery, bearing the words “Austin Preparatory School” and “A.D. 1961,” the date of the granting of the charter by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, it becomes the official seal of the school.

N APRIL 1961, His Eminence announced plans for the construction of a new secondary school for boys in the greater Reading area; and the Very Reverend James A. Donnellon, O.S.A., then Provincial of the Province of Saint Thomas of Villanova, accepted the school in the name of the Augustinians.
Following the acceptance, the Provincial appointed Fathers George F. Burnell, O.S.A., and Philip F. Barrett, O.S.A., as Prior and Rector respectively. When Father Barrett became Dean of the School of Commerce and Finance at Villanova University, Father Burnell then received the Rectorship and Father Arthur F. Smith, O.S.A., the Vice-rectorship. Meanwhile, the building on Willow Street progressed under the direction of John P. Heffernan of Boston as the architect, and Patrick F. Beresford of Medford as general contractor. Austin Preparatory School opened its doors to one hundred and ninety-one boys in September, 1963. The Augustinians chose the name “Austin,” the name given them in fourteenth century England.
Deeply grateful for all you have done for us, the first graduating class of Austin Preparatory School dedicates this volume of the Omega to you, Cardinal Cushing.
