It is finally here! This is my final article as Council Chair. Next month you will be reading an article from DG Gail Anton, the NEW Council Chair. I wish her a successful year in her new role.

I would like to thank the current council for allowing me to serve as Council Chair and for all the support they gave me during my term and for the support I received from all of you during my term.

The MD-1 State convention was an immense success due to the efforts of our convention chair, Lion Terri Pasternak and Our State Secretary, Lion Mary Pemberton.

We enjoyed some informational programs, a wonderful and inspirational speech from our international guest, 1st International Vice-President, Dr. Patti Hill, and were able to recognize some exceptional lions with awards, as well as presenting Melvin Jones awards to three Lions selected by the current governors.

But mainly, we were able to renew friendships and have FUN. Once again, thank you all for giving me a year I will never forget. And now it is time for me to say goodbye. I don’t know what is coming next, but I am sure I will find something to keep me busy.

GLT State Coordinator This month I will discuss and encourage your participation in our REGIONAL LIONS LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE. It will held be August 12 -14, 2022 at the East Peoria Holiday Inn & Suites.

“How much will it cost me?” you ask.

Your only expenses are your travel to and from the RLLI. Your lodging, your meals, your manuals are all paid for through LCI and Lions of Illinois. If you choose to open the beverages and snacks in your room, they are at your

expense. Your spouse or partner is allowed to stay in your room at no extra cost to you or to us. There is much to do and see in the Peoria area. Shopping, biking, hiking, etc.

“So, what is this RLLI thingy?” you ask.

The Chapin Lions Club hosted a very successful “Drive-Thru Pork Chop dinner” on Saturday, April 23, 2022, at the Chapin American Legion.

Members prepared over 120 meals consisting of a pork chop sandwich, baked beans, chips, applesauce, and a bottle of water. Our community donated generously to this free will offering event, the proceeds of which will be given to In His Service missions. In His Service is a group of medical personnel the travel to different countries to help provide medical care to the residents there.

Some medical supplies were also donated to this cause.

We greatly appreciate the area businesses that donated to our event. We also appreciate the junior high boys that volunteered to be meal runners for the event.

The Dixon Noon Lions membership awarded $500 scholarships to three Dixon High School seniors to help them pursue their post high school education. The scholarship application considers academics,

in-school activities, outside of school activities including community service, and a statement

on how the applicant plans to continue with community service in the future. This year’s scholarship is named the “Dixon Noon Lions Densmore Memorial Scholarship” in honor of Fay Densmore who passed away in 2021. A memorial contribution was also made to Lions Camp Tatiyee for special needs children in Arizona as requested by the Densmore family. Fay’s husband Frank (Doc) Densmore passed away in 2013 was a loyal Noon Lions member and became a District 1-D Governor. Doc Densmore was a local Dixon veterinarian. He also served his country in World War II as a marine and participated in combat on Iwo Jima.

--------------------------------------Morrison Lions Members with the assistance of the Morrison American Legion raised funds for the purchase of 350 new flags to replace flags that have been in use for 32 years. The flags line both sides of Route 30 and Route 78 within the

city limits. Flags are displayed on holidays and special occasions. Our club volunteers to help the city place and remove the flags for Memorial Day. Blind program. Attendees received valuable information to bring back to their respective clubs.

The Amboy Club held their annual Rose Day on April 9th. Nearly 800 dozen roses were sold. The Club appreciates the generous support given by the community to make this event so successful. The proceeds from the rose sales are used for the Lions Scholarships which are given out in May and the many other projects sponsored by the Club throughout the year.

At the April 11th meeting, the Amboy Lions inducted two new members. District 1D Governor, Lion Tammy Verstraete inducted Barbara Harrison, sponsored by her father, Lion Cecil Harrison and Diane Blaine, sponsored by Lion Jim Travi.

The Club welcomes and looks forward to working with Lion

Harrison and Lion Blaine.

Governor Verstraete also gave out recognition awards to the following members for their years of service: Lion Gordon Meyers for 35 yrs., Lion Curtis Harrison for 30 yrs., Lion Jim Travi for 20 yrs; Lion Reed Akre for 15 years, Lion Dale Adkisson for 15 yrs., Lion Dennis Marsili for 10 yrs, and Lion Ed Temes for 10 yrs. The Club thanks and congratulates these members for their many years of service to the Lions and the community.

gathered at the Amboy Community Center to dye eggs and fill candy bags for the Cliff Walter Easter Egg

Hunt. Members of the AHS Leo Club joined the Club members to fill nearly 200 bags with candy. Ninety dozen eggs donated by Tommy Patel and the Amboy Food and Liquor Store were dyed. The following day, the weather cooperated with a sunny but cool day for the annual Cliff Walter Easter Egg Hunt. The festivities began at 1pm at the Amboy City Park with the Easter Bunny available for photos.

Many parents took advantage of this photo opportunity to get a picture of their children with the Easter Bunny.

During this time Lion members distributed Easter eggs in the four designated age group areas in the park. Each age group had four special plastic prize eggs hidden in each area: First prize- $20, second prize- $15, third prize- $10 and fourth prize- $5.

The Dixon Wal-Mart gave a monetary donation to help offset some of the costs of the event. At 2 pm the horn promptly sounded and over 150 children scrambled to find their eggs. The Amboy Lions were very happy to be able to bring back

this event in its original format to the community after being modified due to Covid over the past two years. The Amboy Lions meet on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 6 pm at the Amboy Community Center. Any area resident, who would like to learn more about the Lions and their events, should join us as our guest at one of our meetings.

Dinner was served prior to the award ceremony with a feast prepared by Sibs in downtown Genoa, at the GenoaKingston Middle School, great food for a good cause. Superintendent Dr. Brent O’Daniell of the GenoaKingston School District made a

Matthew Cascio, of Genoa Kingston High School. short speech, and introduced the first Principal, Stephanie Hill of Kingston Elementary School. Each of the district’s principals introduced the students from their school, most reading a short letter of recommendation prepared by one or more of the student’s teachers, in some cases the teachers read their own recommendations out loud.

The nominating teachers were invited to dinner this year due to a grant from the School District. The parents accompanied their children to dinner, sponsored by the Genoa Lions. Each student received a medal from Lion President Robert Becker Jr. amid the applause of the 65 people that attended the ceremony. Mrs. Hill introduced first grader, Emely Hipolito, the daughter of Leobardo and Juana Hipolito and read out-loud many wonderful character traits of this young student. The second grader voted Citizen of the year was nominated by her teacher Mrs. Volkening, Kenna Kuschel, the daughter of Matthew and Kelly

Kuschel. Mrs. Volkening made some nice remarks about Kenna and her interaction with classmates. Mrs. Hill then introduced Mr. John Francis, the Principal of Genoa Elementary School who related an amusing story about third grader Lillian McPeek. Lillian is the daughter of Kenneth and Kirsten McPeek. Mr Francis then introduced her nominating teacher, Mr. Davekos who also applauded her citizenship.

Mr. Francis than introduced fourth grader Ilijah Tomlinson, the son of Eric and Cynthia Tomlinson, and pointed out some fun things about this happy fourth grader. Mr. Francis then named fifth grader Nayelli Gonzales-Renovato, the daughter of Uriel Gonzalez and Veronica Renovato. Principal Francis then introduced Mr. Craig Butcher, the Principal of G-K Middle School. Mr. Butcher introduced the 6th grader, theatrically inclined, Andrew Cline, the son of Garrick and Christine Cline.

Andrew enjoyed the accolades immensely and even said a few words in response to his Principal’s comments. The next student, representing the 7th grade,

Zabella Paustian the daughter of Chadd and Renee Paustian, was introduced by Principal Butcher, who listed many fine attributes of this 7th grader. At the end of the evening Chadd Paustian won the 50/50 drawing of $53 and donated it back to the Genoa Lions, a gracious and appreciated gesture.

Mr. Butcher announced the 8th grade recipient of Citizen of the 8 Year, Bryannah Pearson, the daughter of Jason and Margaret Pearson. Mr Butcher embarrassed Bryannah with his praise and then introduced Dr. Matthew Cascio, the Principal of Genoa-Kingston High School. Dr. Cascio was intent on teasing his 4 award winners and stated his intentions clearly before he began. He introduced, 9th grader, Madyson King, the daughter of Timothy and Candice King.

Madyson took the teasing in stride, before receiving her medal from Lion President Becker. The 10th grade recipient, Alayna Pierce, the daughter of Michael and Amy Pierce was than lauded by her nominating teacher Val Amen, volleyball being a big part of Mr. Cascio’s comments

about this Sophomore. Mr. Cascio introduced soccer goalie and 11th grade award winner, Aaron Acosta, the son of Leticia Acosta. Mrs. Maria Maranda made an emotional speech about this special Spanish speaking student in English and Spanish to ensure that his mother could hear just how special Aaron was in her native language. Principal Cascio introduced the final Citizen of the Year, Senior Chase Engel, the son of Jeff and Tammy Engel.

Chase’s athletic abilities coupled with his scholastic work, not to mention his involvement with the FFA made him the perfect candidate for this award. Special thanks to Superintendent Dr. Brent O’Daniell and his assistant Kristi Mulso of the Genoa-Kingston School District who were instrumental in making sure the students and parents knew when and where to be for the Dinner and Award Ceremony.

Thanks go to the janitorial staff at GK Middle School for cleaning up after the fine meal prepared and served by Gregg Sibigtroth of Sibs in Genoa.

The Leaf River Lions held their roast pork loin dinner on April 24th to raise funds for their Leaf River Summer Daze Festival on June 3, 4

& 5. This historically has been well attended and a very good

fundraiser,. However this year for reasons unknown attendance was very poor and the Lions were lucky to break even.

With items returnable and members buying some of the leftovers a modest fee of $214.00 was available to go for the festival. The pictures show preparation for the meal that those that attended said it was great!

--------------------------------------The Pearl City Lions Club annually presents scholarships to several deserving graduating seniors from Pearl City High School. Lionism is dedicated to service to others, and applicants for the scholarships are asked to explain in an essay why they think service is important and how they plan on using their future career to serve others. This year the

club is offering two types of scholarships: the college education scholarship for students planning on attending a two- or four-year college and the Career and Technical Education scholarship pursuing a CTE program at a community college or tech school.

The CTE scholarships are being awarded for the first time as the club wishes to encourage those students pursuing careers in the trades and vocational areas

The Pearl City Lions also awards the Pearl City Lions Underdog Scholarship funded by an anonymous and generous Pearl City High School alum. This scholarship in the amount of $3000 awarded over two years is awarded to a graduating senior who has overcome obstacles in high school and is moving ahead to their posthigh school educational pursuits at the college level.

The two recipients of the Pearl City Lions Club College Scholarship in the amount of $625 each were Ben Bremmer and. Madi Diddens.

80 bowlers enjoyed food and fellowship! The organizers arranged several gift baskets to raffle, and the onsite restaurant, Trio Grille, donated 10% of their food sales for the day.

The annual Red Carpet Corridor Festival is all about family fun on the most famous road in America – Route 66. Sponsored by the twelve communities which make up the 80mile linear museum from Joliet to Lexington, the annual festival invites everyone to experience the good life in the slow lane. The Gardner Lions served root beer floats and pork chop sandwiches.

They also had the Lions of Illinois Hearing / Vision Screening Bus on site.

Oh, boy! What neat bike for Braden!

It was provided by the Westmont Lions, Darien Lions, and the Pedego Bike Shop in Wheaton.

Braden’s Mom shared that when they found out Braden had leukemia, she was pregnant with her twin daughters. When the twin girls were born, they helped the family manage Braden's illness tremendously by bringing joyful moments to the family. As 4-year olds, the twins help Braden quite a bit. The family was told Braden would never walk again, but Physical Therapy has done wonders for Braden. The family is so grateful.

Braden has vision problems — one is seeing depth. He cannot judge things like curbs. His Mom said someone will always be with him when he's riding his Trike Bike.

Braden has very nice friends who help him. They will help him when he rides the Trike Bike.

Over 80 kids participated in the Malta Lions Easter Egg Hunt on April 16th at Malta Lions Park. The Easter Bunny was there for the kids and for Malta Lion President Larry Fullington.

On March 6th, Union Lions and the Huntley Area Lions held a joint fundraiser to benefit the Center for Sight & Hearing in Rockford. It was held at GloBowl in Marengo. Funds were raised with a 50/50 raffle, lots of donated baskets, a percentage of food sales from GloBowl and Trio Grille. After all was said & done, the 1st Annual Event raised a total of $3,000!! Easter Sunday morning 2022, the Sycamore Lions presented a check to the Meals on Wheels staff for $750 to help make the Sunday meal available to those without other options. This has been an Easter morning tradition for the club for many years.

From the Huntley Area Lions Club Roaring Times Newsletter: This 100-year-old picture is as inspiring today as the day it was taken — Helen Keller Meets Charlie Chaplin.

Helen met Charlie at the Chaplin Studios in Hollywood in late 1918 during the filming of Sunnyside.

Keller communicated with Chaplin by reading his lips with her hands, as she felt the vibration of his voice on his throat. She would later recall that she remembered him as being “shy, almost timid, and his lovely modesty lent a touch of romance to the occasion that might otherwise have seemed quite ordinary.” Chaplin worked with the deaf throughout

his career, seeking to improve his own pantomime communication skills, learning sign language, and fingerspelling. In fact, he was a great supporter of the deaf when many in America sought to do away with sign language altogether. Chaplin like to say “A day without laughter is wasted.” It was what kept him going; what brought him joy; what gave him life.”

A Ukraine Relief Collection Box received $600 in donations at the Aurora Noon Lions Club’s Annual Breakfast With the Bunny. A total of $1,343 was forwarded to Lions Clubs International Foundation to aid Ukrainian refugees.

Athens Glory Days Festival Parade The Athens Lions Club and Athens Leo Club participated in the Athens 33 The Illinois Lion & Leo

Glory Days Festival parade on Saturday May 14. The Glory Days festival was a three day event, May 12-14, held at the Athens Community Park. The festival included lots of events, including a Miss Athens Glory Days pageant, music entertainment, carnival rides, co-ed softball tournament, classic car show, all kinds of activities for the kids, and a cornhole tournament. There was great participation by the whole community. The Lions and Leos were glad to be a part of this event.

Senior Lunch and Scholarship Raffle.

The Athens Lions Club held their

annual Senior Citizens Lunch on Sunday April 24, 2022 at the Athens Community Park Building. This lunch was provided by the club at no charge to any Senior Citizen in the Athens School District. This the 32nd continuous year that the Athens Lions have provided this meal. This year the Lions served 95 meals of which 50 were dine in and 45 were take outs. Special thanks to Lions Bill Meisner and Amy Baughman for purchasing the food and supplies as well as cooking. Leo Club member Ellie Alderman was a huge help. Lions Mary Freeman, Holly Henning-Buhr, Paula Rider, Sandy Brackney, Terry Brown, Jim Hale and Bob Roberts also assisted with the project.

The annual Scholarship Raffle drawing was held the same day. This educational raffle raises funds to be

used to award Robert Henning Memorial Scholarships to deserving seniors. Ellie Alderman drew the winning tickets. This year's raffle winners were: Garret Sims $500, Lincoln Brown $250, and Holly Henning-Buhr $100.Net proceeds, to be added to the scholarship fund, were $1,132.

Scholarship winners will be announced in late May. ---------------------------------------

Marshall Lions Club The Leo Club got out of school early Wed., March 9, 2022 and went to Villas of Holly Brook to wash

outside windows and put window clings inside the dining room windows. President Tylea McGee organized the activity, which had 15 people volunteer for the project.

She did an outstanding job.

The Leo Club went to Villas of Holly Brook on Sat., March 26 to play bingo with some of the residents.
