By the time you read this the February Council of Governors meeting will have been held and preparations for the State Program in March and the International Convention will be progressing. The State Program will be held at the Abraham Lincoln Hotel in Springfield on March 5, 2022, and will cover many topics of value to our clubs and members. You will want to save the date for this event. One presentation that I know will be of interest will cover the different grants available from Lions Clubs International Foundation and hints on applying. What makes it unique

As of this date the International Convention in Montreal is a go and registration is open. Multiple District 1 will be hosting a get together with the lions of Hawaii as well as another event which we will announce at a later date. We hope to have a good turn out from our Multiple District to support our incoming governors and show our appreciation to the outgoing governors. I can tell you that the current governors are working hard for the state and their districts and are making progress on achieving their goals for the year, and that the incoming governors have met and discussed their goals for their year, which will continue to move the State forward. Again, those goals will be shared with you once they have been formalized. Finally, get ready

for the State convention in May. Our State Convention Chair has great plans for this year’s convention which will be our first in person State Convention since the pandemic began. Plan to attend to meet with lion friends from around the state and enjoying the planned activities.

Information regarding the convention has already been sent out and you will be hearing more about this event soon.

I do want to remind our lions that Campaign 100 is ongoing, with just a few months remaining in which to reach the goal set. Talk to your district LCIF coordinator to see what you can do to help LCIF raise funds to continue its support of lions causes worldwide.

The next few months will be busy, but I hope you will continue the great work you do in your communities and make a push to bring in new members to make this year one of positive growth.

WE SERVE, but we could serve even more with more members.

SETTING GOALS AND OBJECTIVES Lion Larry McGuire, PDG MD-1 GLT State Chairperson We have just wrapped up the governor elect and vice governor elect schools. Attendance was very good for both classes, the Councils of 2022-2023 and 2023-2024. I saw lots of enthusiasm and heard some great questions asked. I saw teamwork in action. I saw greatness on the horizon.

Lions CC John Barsanti, 1-A District Governor Gail Anton, and PCC Steve Anton were instructors par excellence. I have been blessed to have these instructors, and I have enjoyed working with them. Lion PCC Darren Van Duyn spoke to the group about goals and action plans.

He explained the importance of setting realistic and attainable goals with a plan on how to achieve those goals. We wish PCC Darren well in his quest to achieve his Doctorate of Lions.

Goals. You can create them but you can’t take ‘em out in public.

As a retired State of Illinois employee serving both in management and administration, I have written many goals (targets) and objectives (action plans).

Further, I have reviewed and critiqued many employees’ goals and objectives.

We, Lions, need to sit and really think about our goals and action plans.

In my past employment we would see such goals as “Buy a new car so I can get to work on time.” There was no action plan on that goal. Too, who

knows what outside factors could prevent that goal from happening.

And that goal really was not job specific.

The same can be said about such broad goals as “Create 10 new clubs and recruit 100 new members.”

Truly a lofty goal and I wish that Lion success. But is that goal realistic and attainable when your district lost two clubs and dropped 60 members? No, it is not. Further, you did not tell us how you were going to get there, and you failed to identify who has that responsibility.

Let me cite an overly simple example of a goal. As I sit in my office chair, my goal is to exit the room. (There’s my goal, exit the room.) As I rise from the chair, plus every step I take to reach that door is an action plan.

Who is responsible to meet this goal? I am.

Is it a realistic goal? Yes. Is it attainable? Yes. So, if your district is dropping more members than recruiting new members, is it an attainable goal to recruit 100 new members? In all probability, no. Did you include an action plan with assigned

responsibility and time lines? No. advice on setting those figures.

So, when it comes time to write your ‘Larry,” he said, “aim low and shoot goals think realistically. I harken high.” The same applies when back to when I had just been setting membership and new club promoted form assistant store goals. Make them attainable, but manager to store manager. Campaign 100: We Keep Getting Closer, Let’s Add a Legacy of Love

Beyond The Goal Call it “Going Into The Home Stretch”; “Getting Into the Playoffs” or “Nearing the Super Bowl or World Series”. Whatever way you look at it, Campaign 100: LCIF Empowering Service is a short

distance from conclusion.

June 30, those of us laboring in the LCIF field want to be over the $300 million mark and serving more people throughout the world. It has been a rougher road than imagined at the beginning but with the assistance of Lions like each one of you reading this, we keep edging closer.

Its is not the goal that is important. It is the many people, two billion individuals who will be helped, each and every year going forward. We might as well warn you, we do not intend to be stopping at the goalpost.

We intend to keep going. The needs

will continue to grow and Lions Clubs International Foundation must grow also.

Insidious diseases are always with us. The helping hand will never grow old. A few extra dollars now will help us to reach the challenge.

Now would be a great time to consider a continual donation of a few dollars weekly, monthly or annually. We all were able to find a few extra coin to share with those in need throughout this four-year run.

We have started the habit, and this is one we should not break.

As a personal note from this contributing District Chair, I plan on sending an extra little donation in Lion Wes Salsbury’s memory. MD-1 Past District Governors Association Annual Dinner Meeting Announcement Past District Governors of MD-1, After much discussion and careful deliberation your Association Officers have decided to hold our annual Dinner Meeting in conjunction with a Md-1 Forum planned for March 5 at the Abraham Lincoln hotel in Springfield. OBITUAORIES PDG Wes Salsbury District 1-A Governor 2011 -2012 It is with deep sadness and profound sense of loss to inform you the ultimate passing of District 1-A, PDG Wes Salsbury after a long illness on Wednesday Evening, the 12th of January 2022.

Please include Former District 1-A First Lady, Marcia Knudson and the Salsbury family in your prayers so they may find strength to carry on during these difficult times.

PDG Wes was a great Lion with good heart. He once quoted "I will continue to make difference in the world in which I live. I will continue to serve others by staying involved in the Lions Club's Service projects, especially those which assist the blind, the hungry and less fortunate" PDG Wes worked as Clinical Director at Camelot Community Care, Inc, A Teacher/Grant Writer at South Asia Center and lastly before retirement, an Administrator at Community Centers of Chicago for 21 years.

Eternal rest grant unto Wes' soul, O Lord and let the perpetual light shine upon him.

DANVERS - Kenneth D. Franz, 83, of Danvers, passed from this life on December 31, 2021. He was a resident at Copper Creek Memory Care facility in Lincoln, where family members encircled him during his final hours here on earth.

Ken was born March 25, 1938, in Ft.Wayne, IN, son of F.K. and Nell Franz. He married Ada Jean Diel on December 31,1960, in Staunton, IL, she survives. Also surviving are his daughter, Amy Millett, and her husband, Mike, Carlock; four granddaughters: Mikelle Johnson (Kyle Burgus) Bloomington; Keirstyn (Logan) Dietrich, Goodfield, Alexanna Millett (Mason Maier) Tempe, AZ, and Ashlyn (Kyle) Alliss, Congerville. Ken is also survived by three greatgranddaughters: Brenley, Kimber, and Mykah Dietrich, Goodfield; brother, Dave (Kay) Franz, Bloomington; brother, Rick Franz, Santa Fe, NM; and sister, Susan Franz (Judith Markowitz) Chicago. His parents and his son, Brad Franz, preceded him in death.

Ken had a heart for service. He graduated from Normal Community High School in 1956 and joined the US Navy that fall. As part of his four-year Naval career, Ken proudly served as a medical corpsman on the USS Yellowstone. After an honorable discharge, he returned home and worked for Retail Credit Company (Equifax). While living in Macomb, he served as an officer with the Jaycees, earning the Spark Plug Award for outstanding service and commitment.

Shortly after moving to Danvers, Ken joined the Danvers Lions Club, where he held various offices and was elected by his peers to serve as District 1-K 13 The Illinois Lion & Leo

Governor for the 1979-1980 term. He loved Lions, lived by the motto: "Service in the Spirit", traveled to and supported numerous clubs throughout the state, and sponsored more than 50 new members in joining the Danvers Lions Club. He wanted others to experience the gift in serving others.

In fulfilling his lifelong service commitment, Ken served as an elder at the First Presbyterian Church of Danvers, where he was a member and also taught Sunday school, delivered sermons, and officiated funerals. A Danvers resident for over 50 years, Ken served as a town board member and was a member of the Rural Government League in McLean County.

He enjoyed Canada fishing trips with his father-in-law, summer camping excursions with family and friends, and annual trips to New Glarus, WI. He most enjoyed being at home, caring for his family, home and garden.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Danvers or the Danvers Lions Club via the Otto-Argo-Calvert Memorial Home, Danvers.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------PDG Delmar E. Norgaard, 94, of Pontiac, Illinois passed away Monday evening, December 13, 2021, at Good Samaritan Nursing Home.

He was the District Governor of District 1K in 1981-82.

Cremation rites accorded. A graveside service will be held at a later date at Oaklawn Cemetery, Dwight, Illinois. Calvert and Martin Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials in Delmar’s name may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Delmar was born August 23, 1927, in Emington, Illinois, the son of Elmer and Agatha (Eich) Norgaard. He is survived by his son, Terry (Mary Jo) Norgaard of Pontiac, Illinois; and his daughter, Sonia (Grant) Oppenhuis of Lansing, 14 The Illinois Lion & Leo

Illinois. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Jeff (Sheina) Norgaard of Highland, Illinois, Tracy (Ken) Simmons of Griffith, Indiana, Paul Oppenhuis of Manhattan, Illinois, and Kayla Oppenhuis of Lansing, Illinois; by five cherished great grandchildren: Gracelynn, Dalton, Hannah, and Lucia Norgaard, and Addison Oppenhuis; by a sister, Doris Carter of Pontiac, Illinois; and by many nieces and nephews.

Delmar was preceded in death by his wife, Norma J. Norgaard; his parents, Elmer and Agatha Norgaard; his siblings, Lorraine Norgaard and Betty Norgaard; and his granddaughter, Teresa Jo Norgaard.

Delmar graduated from Saunemin Township High School. He worked at Honegger’s Hatchery for some years before pursuing a career in insurance sales. He eventually owned “The Norgaard Agency”, an insurance and real estate brokerage business for over 30 years. He was a long-standing member of the Lions Club and served as Lions District Governor. He was a cherished husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.

During the month of December, Lions were busy preparing for Christmas in Kirkland where we decorated the stage in Franklin Park with other community service groups and provided hotdogs,

water, and chips to attendees at our community’s lighting of the Christmas tree on December 11th.

Hundreds of hotdogs were prepared, delivered and served to all of those in attendance. Lions prepared the hot dogs and served in Franklin Park’s pavilion

by Darien Lions Club and the Home Depot. Scouts and adults all put in time and hard work to complete this amazing project.

On December 31st, Lion Marty Keller, President Wheaton Lions Club thanked Parker Holz, a student at Wheaton Warrenville South High School for collecting thirty pairs of eyeglasses. The Bartlett Lions Club received an abundance of non-perishable food items which were donated to the Hanover Township Food Pantry. The Bartlett Lions also donated 300 stockings filled with candy.

December brought the annual Poinsettia Sale and the annual Christmas Tree and Wreath sale for

Algonquin Lions ended up partnering with a local Scout Troop and the Algonquin State Bank while

a blood drive took place in the Versiti van parked across from the Lions tree lot in the Algonquin State Bank parking lot. A total of 17 donors gave blood that Sunday, Nov 28th, while the Lions’ tree sales were taking place.

the evening event at Luigi's Pizza in Aurora for 60 students, parents, and teachers from West Aurora School District 129 and East Aurora School District 131.

This is the group of Roselle Lions that inaugurated the conveyor system that was bought with the LCIF grant money. The conveyor

system will help unload food donations easily into the Roselle United Methodist Food Pantry storage area and will expand the

capacity of the pantry to receive food donations from grocery stores and other donors. PDG John Barsanti and DG Lori Chassee assisted Lion Raj Rajaram, Hunger Alleviation Campaign Chair, in getting the grant approved by LCIF. ---------------------------------------

The Aurora Carillon Lions Club has volunteered at Feed My Starving Children and will be doing so again this January and February.

pancake breakfast to benefit the families of Bradley Police Sgt. Marlene Rittmanic and Officer Tyler Bailey. Officer Rittmanic was killed and Officer Bailey was critically wounded as they responded to a domestic disturbance December 29th. "We expected a large turnout,

but nothing like this," longtime Lion’s Treasurer Greg Lockwood said. "It's going to be a phenomenal result." Lion Lockwood reported the initial total from the fundraiser was roughly $18,500; a little more than $6,000 came from the breakfasts served and the remainder was in donations.
