If Stan Swamy, the Martyr, were alive today ….
- *Fr. Cedric Prakash SJ
Exactly five years ago, on 5 July 2021, JesuitFather StanSwamy was murdered. Hewaskilled becausehe refused to kow-tow to a brutal, fascist regime. He was killed because he took astand for justice andtruth!Hewaskilled becausehe accompanied the Adivasis and the other subalterns for a more dignified, equitable, and humane life! He was killed because he refused to compromise with corrupt, communal, anti-people, anti –constitutional forces! He was killed because he believed in humanity and in the power of
ordinary people! What Stanʼs murderers never bargained for is that Stan the martyr will never die! Stan was a martyr for justice – he livesinthehearts, souls, andminds ofmillions todayandforever!
StanSwamy, theMartyr, isnolonger around today- but if he were physically present in this world today, what exactly would he be doing?
IfStanSwamy, theMartyr, were alivetoday , he would be amid the
Adivasis. His life would be very simple and frugal. He would eat their food, sing their songs, and dancewiththem.Hewould identify withthem totally.Yes,ofcourse,he would be angry if others tried to destroy their identity, their culture and customs, their traditions, and their value systems. He would master their language andwalk the talkwiththem.
IfStanSwamy, theMartyr, were alivetoday, he would accompany theAdivasisandothersubalterns in their relentless quest forjustice. He would have no qualms of consciencetotakeonthepowerful, vested interests who deny the Adivasis of their legitimate jaljungle- jameen rights. He would have been fearless in exposing the profiteers, wholootthenationofits precious natural resources for their greed in amassing scandalous amounts of wealth. He would challengethesystem fordestroying the environment and the fragile ecosystems in Jharkhand, in the Aravalli hills, inthe Nicobar Islands, andelsewhere!
IfStanSwamy, theMartyr, were alivetoday,he would fight for the land rights of the Adivasis! He would join the Adivasis, the Dalits, other subalterns, and civil society members in the struggles against the violation of laws in acquiring land for mega projects, for mining (coal mining continues to be rampant in Jharkhand and in other tribal areas today), and infrastructural development, which flouttherightsofthedowntrodden. He would challenge all corporate encroachments. He would raise his voiceindemocratic, legitimateways against the state-sponsored violationsoflawsandtheassaulton the democratic rights of people, aimed at paving the way for unrestricted exploitation of land and natural resources. He would question the non-implementation of the 5th Schedule of the Constitution, and why the Panchayats(ExtensiontoScheduled Areas) Act [PESA], which is being ignored. Hewould strongly express hisdisappointment atthesilenceof the Government on the landmark 1997 Samantha Judgment of the Supreme Court;hewould speakout
strongly against the half-hearted action of the Government on the ‘Forest Rights Act, 2006ʼ. He would express his apprehensions at the Amendment to the ‘Land Acquisition Act 2013ʼ by the Jharkhandgovernment, whichwasa death-knell for the Adivasi Community. He would strongly disagreewiththesettingupof‘Land Banksʼ,whichhesawasacalculated plottoannihilatetheAdivasis. IfStanSwamy, theMartyr, were alivetoday,he would be with the young adults! He would take seriously the letter (dated 24 May 26) of Fr Arturo Sosa, the Superior General of the Jesuits, in which he says that we are missioned “to accompanyyoung adultsintheir searchforahope-filledfuture.That searchtodayisnotaneasyone. We areseeingatramplingonhuman rights, adisregardforourcommon home, the breakdown of international order, war, and a recklessnessabouthumanlifeatall itsstages.”Throughthe‘Persecuted Prisonersʼ Solidarity Committeeʼ, he would challenge the indiscriminate arrest of three thousand young Adivasis under the label of ‘naxalsʼ
just because they questioned and resisted unjust land alienation and displacement. He would have supported the demands and the initiatives of the youth protesting (some even fasting) at ‘Jantar Mantarʼ,Delhi!
IfStanSwamy, theMartyr, were alivetoday , he would openly take on the Special Intensive Revision(SIR). Hewould regard itas a blatant attack on the country's citizensandagross violation ofthe Constitutional guarantee of the right toexerciseoneʼsfranchise. He wouldbeconcernedthatthousands of Adivasis, minorities, and other poor people would be systematically disenfranchised for want of ‘legitimateʼ documents. IfStanSwamy, theMartyr, were alivetoday, he would rededicate himselftotheletterandspiritofthe Constitution of India. He would speak about the sanctity of it and thatnoonehastherighttotrample on it. He would insist that justice, liberty, equality, fraternity, dignity, unity, integrity, secularism, and pluralism are the values enshrined in our Constitution. Women should be empowered and given their rightful and equal place in Parliament. That delimitation and delisting are gross manipulations. That citizens have the right to dissent and voice their protest against corruption, communalism, andcorporatisation. Hewouldtake onthedraconianUnlawfulActivities Prevention Act(UAPA), which ensured his death, and which still keeps the likes of Umar Khalid and othersillegally incarcerated.

The small farmers and the ordinary workers are pitted against thepowerful corporations. IfStanSwamy, theMartyr, were alive today, he would have welcomed ‘Magnifica Humanitasʼ. The first encyclical ofPope Leo XIV makes an unequivocal and nonnegotiable case for the protection andtheenhancementofthedignity of the human person, the inviolability ofhumanrightsandthe indispensability ofjusticeandpeace in todayʼs world. Pope Leo XIV is facing the first majorcrisisof hispapacy
• The Defiance: Despite a personal, 11th-hour plea from Pope Leo XIV calling the move a "schismatic act" and a "sin of extreme gravity," the SSPX went ahead with the ceremony. [1, 2]
• The New Bishops: Four priests were consecrated: Pascal Schreiber
After the ultra-conservative traditionalist group, the Society of SaintPiusX(SSPX),directly defied hisauthority by ordaining fournew bishops without a papal mandate. Theunauthorized consecrationtook placeon Wednesday,July1,2026, intheSwissvillageofÉcône.Thisact of defiance automatically triggers lataesententiae(automatic excommunication) under Catholic canon law for both the ordaining andordainedbishops, threateninga formal, deep schism within the global Catholic Church.[1,2,3,4,5]
• Mass Attendance: An estimated 15,000 to 16,600 traditionalist Catholics gathered in an Alpine pasture to witness the Latin ritual.[1]
• Presiding Bishop: The ceremony was led by Msgr. Alfonso de Galarreta. [1]
CoreIdeologicalRifts
• Vatican II Rejection: Founded in 1970 by French Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, the SSPX fundamentally rejects the modernizing reforms of theSecond VaticanCouncil.[1, 2]
• Liturgical Dispute: The group strictly opposes celebrating Massin localvernacularlanguages, insisting exclusively on the ancient Traditional LatinMass.[1,2]
• Doctrinal Friction: The sect also explicitly rejects Vatican positions regarding religious freedom and ecumenical/interreligious dialogue. [1,2]
The SSPX Defense vs. Vatican
Reality
• "State of Necessity": The SSPX argued thattheconsecrations were

a "sacred duty" born out of necessity to tend to their community (which counts 800 placesofworshipin77countries),as only two of their previous bishops survive. [1,2]
• Claiming Loyalty: In his homily, SSPX superior Fr. Davide Pagliarani claimed they love the Pope but refuse to see the office"humiliated alongside falsepastors". [1, 2]
• Sacramental Fallout: Pope LeoXIV warned that this schismatic step isolates followers, spiritually jeopardizing them by depriving them of lawful, and in some cases valid, access to the sacraments.[1, 2]
HistoricalContext
This mirrors the infamous 1988 Écône consecrations, where Archbishop Lefebvre similarly ordained four bishops without permission, resulting in automatic excommunications by Pope John Paul II. While Pope Benedict XVI lifted those original excommunications in2009 tofoster dialogue, and Pope Francis extended specific sacramental permissions, this fresh defiance effectively shatters decades of
delicate Vatican reconciliation efforts.[1, 2]

Thousands of US Catholics given excommunication warning after schism ruling
StorybyJordanKing
Thousands of Catholics in the United States who belong to or formallysupporttheSocietyofSaint Pius X (SSPX) have been warned they could face excommunication after the Vatican ruled the breakaway traditionalist groupʼs latest episcopal consecrations constituted “an act of nature schismatic.”
Ina decree issued onThursday, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith formally declared the excommunication of six bishops connected to the SSPX after the priestly fraternity consecrated four new bishops in Écône, Switzerland, on Wednesday without Pope Leo XIVʼsapproval. TheHolySeesaidin itsdecreethattheordinations were carried out “without pontifical mandate andagainstthewillof the Supreme Pontiff.”

Thedecreealsohasimplications for the entire SSPX community, as it warns lay followers who formally adheretothefraternitythattheyare to be considered excommunicated and invalidates confessions and marriages celebrated by SSPX clergy.
“As for the lay faithful, those who formallyadheretotheFraternity are tobeconsideredexcommunicated,” reported Vatican News, the Holy Seeʼsofficialmedia outlet.
The warning effects about 30,000 SSPX faithful in the United States, along with 124 priests serving 115 chapels, according to SSPXdata for 2024, the most recent available, meaning the Vaticanʼs ruling could affect a significant number of AmericanCatholics.

Alfonso de Galarreta from Spain, a bishopoftheSocietyofSaintPiusX, center, consecrates four new bishops during a Mass in a tent outside the societyʼs seminary in Écône,Switzerland, onJuly1.
What Constitutes ‘Formal Adherence’?
While the decree does not explain what it means to “formally adhere” to the SSPX, it points to a 1996 Vatican explanatory note that says that “an occasional participation in liturgical acts or activities” of the movement “is not sufficient” to constitute formal adherence, indicating thatmerely attending an SSPXMassisnotenough. Accordingtothe1996 note,“formal adherence” requires both a
conscious decision to place allegiance to the SSPX above obedience to the pope and an outward expression ofthatchoice. SSPX bishops Alfonso de Galarreta andBernard Fellay, whocarried out the consecrations, are explicitly named, as well as newly consecrated bishops Pascal Schreiber, Michael Goldade, Michel Poinsinet de Sivry and Marc Hanappier. Thedecree said they all incurredipso factoexcommunication. The decree, which appears to go significantly further than the Vaticanʼs response to the societyʼs 1988 consecrations, also represents one of the strongest acts of Pope Leo XIVʼs pontificate to date, signaling his willingness to enforce papal authority after months of efforts to resolve the dispute with the breakaway group.
From left, Marc Hanappier, Michel PoinsinetdeSivry, MichaelGoldade and Pascal Schreiber, the newly consecrated bishops of the traditionalist Catholic Society of Saint Pius X, stand next to coconsecrator Bernard Fellay during their consecration ceremony in Écône,Switzerland, onJuly1.
Inside the Vatican’s
ExcommunicationDecree
TheVaticansaidthesixbishops had incurred automatic, orlatae sententiae , excommunication under canon law by participating in episcopal consecrations carried out without thepopeʼsapproval.
The decree, signed by Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, the prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine oftheFaith, wasissuedby the dicastery 24 hours after the consecration ceremonyinÉcône.
Anaccompanying explanatory note said repeated efforts by the Holy See from thepapacyof PopePaul VI, which ended in 1978, through recenttalksunderPopeLeoXIV to restore theSSPXtofullcommunion hadproved unsuccessful. Thenotequoted fromSt.John Paul IIʼs 1988 apostolic letterEcclesia
Dei , in which he excommunicated SSPXʼs founder, Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, saying, “Such disobedience which implies in practice therejection of the Roman primacy constitutes a schismatic act.”

Theconsecrations took placeatthe SSPXʼs international seminary in Écône,asitecloselyassociatedwith the group since Lefebvre established itin1970.
During the ceremony, de Galarreta, the consecrating bishop, laid his hands on the heads of the four priests a central moment in the Catholic riteofepiscopal ordination thatsymbolizes the transmission of apostolic succession before they concelebrated Mass alongside seniorSSPXclergy.
The ceremony went ahead despite repeated warningsfromtheVatican that carrying out episcopal consecrations without papal approval would have serious canonical consequences. In May, Fernández wrote to SSPX Superior General Davide Pagliarani urging
him to cancelthe consecrations, warning they would represent “a true schismatic act.” The fraternity rejected the request, arguing that the new bishops were needed to ensure the continuation of its ministry worldwide. The five-hour consecration ceremonydrewanestimated16,500 worshippers and was livestreamed inmultiple languages, according to theAssociatedPress.
Nuns react during the schismatic consecration of bishops by the traditionalist Catholic Society of Saint Pius X in Écône, Switzerland, onJuly1.
Speaking with reporters shortly after the consecrations, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin said he felt“deep sorrow” over the ceremony, saying it had inflicted a serious blow to the churchʼsunity.
“I wish to express deep sorrow, because, whenspeakingoftheunity of the church, an act of this kind deeply wounds that unity,” he said, adding that episcopal ordinations carriedoutwithoutapapalmandate “break theunity of thechurch” and incurexcommunication.
HowtheSSPXResponded TheSSPX hasnot responded to the Vaticanʼs excommunication decree.
During Wednesdayʼs ceremony, it defended the consecrations as a necessary step to preserve its mission, rejecting suggestions that it intended to create a rival church orchallengethepopeʼs authority. Beforetheconsecrations began, the SSPX read a letterexplaining why it haddecidedtoproceed. Itrepeated its long-standing disagreements with Rome, arguing that since the Second Vatican Council, church leaders had abandoned Catholic tradition, and it dismissed the Holy Seeʼsexcommunication threats. “Weconsidereverypunishmentand censurebroughttobearagainstthis stepwillhavenovalidity,”thegroup said.
Superior General of the Society of Saint Pius X Davide Pagliarani

After the ordinations went ahead, theSSPX saidina statement that it “sincerely regrets” that the consecrations were carried out withoutLeoʼsauthorization, butthat “exceptional circumstances” had madethemnecessary.
Thegroupalsosaiditregretted that its superior general had not received a personal meeting with Leo to explain “the grave reasons” behindtheceremony.
It added that the consecrations were a source of “profound joy,” saying the four new bishops would help preserve “the sacred heritage of Tradition” and represented “a verygreatgraceforthesocietyitself andforthewholechurch.”
Wider Cultural Divides in the Church
Some conservative Catholics have questioned whythe Vaticanmoved soforcefully againsttheSSPX while disputes over LGBTQ inclusion, womenʼs ordination and so-called Pride Masses have not drawn the samepenalties.
The Lepanto Institute, a conservative Catholic research and advocacy organization in the U.S., commented on an X post showing photosofaPrideMassorganizedby theLGBTQ+organization Stonewall, writing: “Pure sacrilege goes unpunished … but the SSPX is the problem theVaticanneedstofocus on.”
According to the Vatican, the SSPX caseis different because it involves adirect actofschism: Bishops were consecrated without papal approval, challenging the popeʼs authority over the governance and unityofthechurch.
TheVaticanhasnotendorsedsamesex marriage or the liturgical blessings of same-sex unions. Inits 2023 declaration Fiducia Supplicans , the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith allowed
spontaneous pastoral blessings for “couples in irregular situations and same-sex couples,”butitsaidthose blessings must not resemble a wedding riteorsuggestapproval of theunion.
Theclashreflectsabroaderstruggle inside Catholicism that mirrors political and cultural divisions outside the Church: between those who want Rome to be more welcoming on issues such as
sexualityandgenderandthosewho seesuchmovesasevidencethatthe church has abandoned its original beliefs. The SSPX has long argued that reforms linked to the Second Vatican Council weakened Catholic doctrine, while the Vatican says unitywiththepopeisnotoptional.
