Before the age of blockbusters and Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI), therewasatimewhencinema was pure, powerful, and golden. It was an era when films weren’t just entertainment butanartforminits mostexpressiveandelegantstate.
Konkani cinema reminds us that even a small regional industry can leave behind a powerful cultural legacy. Long before large budgets, advanced technology, and

widespread digitalplatforms became the norm, Konkani filmmakers were already creating meaningful cinema that resonated deeply with audiences. Despite limited financial resources and minimal commercial backing, they broughttolifestoriesrootedinlocal realities, traditions, family values, social struggles, and the unique spirit of the coastal Konkani community.
Inmany ways, Konkani cinema was ahead of its time. It focused on authentic storytelling and community-driven narratives long before realism and rooted cinema became celebrated trends in Indian filmmaking. These pioneers laid a strong artistic foundation, inspiring a new generation of creators to believe that regional stories also deservethespotlight.
Today, films like VagansoKheland Toxench Zanv are more than just movies. They mark the return of Konkani cinema’s lost glory. These

films continue the dream of earlier filmmakers while bringing fresh energy, better filmmaking, and modern storytelling to today’s audience.Thisrevivalshowsthatthe spirit of Konkani cinema never disappeared. Itwasonly waiting for theright timetoshineonceagain.
VagansoKhel is a 2026 Konkani suspense thriller thatunfolds inthe quiet and close-knit village of Bairottu, where a festive Diwali celebration takes a shocking turn after a tragic mistake changes the lives of the villagers forever. Directed by Arvin Lobo and produced by Praveen Fernandes, the film blends suspense, emotion, village traditions, and human relationships into a gripping cinematicexperience thatkeepsthe audienceengaged throughout. Whatmakesthefilmstandoutisthe way it beautifully captures the essence of village life, showcasing local culture, traditions, and the strong emotional bonds within the community whileslowlybuilding an atmosphereofmysteryandtension. The story reflects how an unexpectedincidentcancreatefear, confusion, andconflictinapeaceful society, making the audience emotionally connected to the charactersandtheirstruggles. The filmalso deserves appreciation for introducing a talented group of young and fresh newcomers who bring natural performances and youthful energy to the screen. Despite featuring many new faces,
the performances feel confident and impactful, giving the film a refreshing appeal for modern audiences.

One of the biggest highlights of VagansoKhelis the transformation of Dolla Manglur, who has long been loved by audiences for his excellent comic timing and entertaining roles. In this film, he surprises viewers with a completely different portrayal, stepping away fromhumour anddelivering amore intense and emotionally layered performance. His new avatar adds depth to the film and proves his versatility as an actor, making his role one of the most talked about aspectsofthemovie. With its engaging storyline, strong performances, visual appeal, and rooted cultural backdrop, Vaganso
Khel marks an important step forwardformodernKonkanicinema and reflects the growing ambition andcreativity withintheindustry. On the other hand, ToxenchZanv , presentsanemotional andinspiring story centered around Valerian played by Rayan Magneto, a carefree young man from a small village wholiveswithhisfatherand grandmother. Happywithhissimple life, Valerian avoids responsibilities andshowslittleinterestinfindinga job or supporting his family. However, an unexpected incident suddenly changes the direction of his life, forcing him to confront reality and discover a deeper purpose forhimself. Withitstouchingnarrative, relatable emotions, andmeaningfulmessage, ToxenchZanvis more than just a

family drama. It is a heartfelt story of transformation, resilience, and thecourage tomove forward when lifetakesanunforeseenturn.
Both the films, VagansoKheland ToxenchZanv , released during the summer of 2026, have performed exceptionally well and received an overwhelming response from audiences. Considering that the audiencebaseforKonkanicinemais comparatively small, the support and appreciation shown by viewers has been truly encouraging and heartwarming.

The success of these films proves that audiences are willing to support meaningful regional cinema when stories are told with sincerity, passion, and cultural authenticity. The Konkani speaking and Mangalorean community have once again shown their love for their language and culture by embracing these films wholeheartedly.
At the same time, continued support from theaudience remains extremely important forthegrowth and sustainability of Konkani cinema.Ahumble request goesout to all Konkani speaking and Mangalorean viewers to continue showering their love and encouragement towards suchfilms. Wordofmouthalsoplaysavitalrole in the success and publicity of regional movies, and every recommendation, review, and appreciation can help Konkani cinema reacha wider audience and achieve greater heights in the future.

On June 5 every year, we celebrate the World Environment Day. There is a growing awareness among people of the hazards of environmental degradation, pollution, depletion of the ozone layer, global warming, climate change etc. More measures are takenbygovernments andNGOsto maintain the ecological balance even as pollution in various cities is onthe increase.
It is praiseworthy that we are all becoming increasingly aware of the needforthisecological balance. We need to minimize pollution, clean upthe air, plantmore trees, anddo everything necessary to maintain ecological balance. While there is rightly a growing concern for the natural environment of the earth, we have failed to pay sufficient attention to the need for “human ecology”. Pope John Paul II in his Encyclical Letter, Centesimus Annus” said: “In addition to the irrational destruction of the natural environment, wemustalsomention the more serious destruction of the
human environment…. Although people are rightly worried…. About preserving the natural habitats of the various animal species threatened with extinction…. Too little effortismade tosafeguardthe moral condition for an authentic humanecology” (CA No.38).
Millions of poor people live in subhuman conditions, lacking even basic amenities of life, inconditions which are farbelow human dignity. The first andfundamental structure for human ecology according to PopeJohnPaulisthefamily,“family founded on marriage, in which the mutual gift of self by husband and wife creates an environment in which children can be born and develop theirpotentialities, become aware of their dignity and prepare to face their unique and individual destiny” (CA No.39). Sadly, the institution of the family itself is in danger. Pre-marital sex, casual sex, live-in-relationships etc. are increasingandmanyintheyounger generation are neither interested in familynorchildren.
Another serious threat to human ecology is the widespread use of contraception and abortion. It is estimated that about 150 million abortions take place in the world every year! And India alone is responsible forabout 10% ofthem! The impact of widespread use of contraception and abortion all over the world is obvious. In several affluent countries, there are more deaths than births. There are more oldpeople thanyouth andchildren. Such imbalance is detrimental to human ecology and demographic balance. In India, with the widespread practice of selective abortions of girl children, the imbalance is more alarming. Dueto the rampant practice of female foeticide and infanticide in many states (especially Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi etc.)the sexratio for1000malesisabout780females, in some districts even lower. This imbalance is certainly due to the arbitrary interference byman in the plan of God for creation and procreation.
PopeFrancissaid:“Sinceeverything is interrelated, concern for the protection of nature is also
incompatible with the justification ofabortion”(LaudatoSiNo.120). He further affirmed: “Human ecology also implies another profound reality: the relationship between humanlifeandthemorallaw, which is inscribed in our nature and is necessaryforthecreation ofamore dignified environment”. (LaudatoSi . No.155)
If we do not pay heed to the need of human ecology and give it the attentionitdeservesbutcontinueto destroy human life at the rate of millions, there will be serious demographic imbalance. Abortion is an abominable crime, which involves killing of an innocent child in the womb. AsCatholics, we must be in the forefront to respect and defendhumanlife.Wemustrespect lifefrom themomentofconception toitsnaturaldeath. MaytheGod of life inspire us and motivate us to defend life. Protection anddefence of innocent life in the womb must be ourtop mostpriority.
We must respect life atevery stage andteachothers todo thesame. In our given situation, we must also protect the girl child and promote gender equality. Anydiscrimination
against the girl child must be condemned, andshe mustbe given equal rights andopportunities. We need to create in our families and society a conducive environment where both girls andboys cangrow together as equals and develop their potentialities. Therefore, it is not sufficient to protect only the natural environment. Perhaps, it is evenmoreimportant toprotectand maintain what we call human ecology i.e., proper family environment, proper living conditions withbasicamenities, and above all demographic balance as intended by God without arbitrarily
interfering in the plan and order designed by God through contraception andabortion...

The Catholic Church observed the 60th World Day of Social
Communications on 17 May 2025. In his first message for this significant day, Pope Leo XIV focussed on the need for and importance of 'Preserving Human Voices and Faces'. The message whichwaswrittenonthefeastofthe patron of communications, St FrancisdeSales(24January2026), is incisive and highlights some of the major challenges which modern communications facetoday.
Throughout his message, Pope Leo insists that communications must be human. For this, hesetsthetone in his opening paragraph stating, "Ourfacesandvoicesareunique, distinctivefeaturesofeveryperson; they reveal a person’s own unrepeatable identityandarethe defining elements of every encounterwithothers.Theancients understoodthiswell.Todefinethe humanperson, theancientGreeks usedtheword “face”(prósōpon), becauseitexpressesetymologically whatisbeforeone’sgaze, theplace ofpresenceandrelationship. The Latin term “person” (frompersonare),ontheotherhand, evokes the idea of sound: not just any sound, buttheunmistakablesound ofsomeone’svoice."
Hegoes ontoemphasise thatfaces and voices are sacred since every humanbeingiscreatedintheimage and likeness of God. This nonnegotiable truth is our very first Catechism lesson and the basic of Catholic Social Teaching. Every human is endowed with a dignity which comes from God. Pope Leo asserts thathumanfacesandvoices must be preserved since they are
indelible reflections of God's love. He further adds, "Each of us possesses an irreplaceable and inimitablevocation, thatoriginates fromourownlivedexperienceand becomes manifest through interactionwithothers".
He feels that "The challenge, therefore, isnottechnological, but anthropological.Safeguardingfaces and voices ultimately mean safeguardingourselves.Embracing theopportunitiesofferedbydigital technologyandartificialintelligence with courage, determination and discernmentdoesnotmeanturning a blind eye to critical issues, complexitiesandrisks".
PopeLeomincesnowords intaking on Artificial Intelligence (AI), saying that it reduces our ability to listen, thinkcriticallyanditincreases social polarisation. AI he is convinced, threatens todiminish our cognitive, emotional and communication skills. It erodes our ability to think analytically and creatively to understand meaning and distinguish between syntax and semantics. He highlights the wayAI hastaken control ofseveral aspects of human living. AI in many ways
seems to have numbed the humaneness of an ordinary human being. He cautions, "However, renouncing creativity and surrenderingourmentalcapacities andimaginationtomachineswould meanburyingthetalentswehave beengiventogrowasindividualsin relationtoGodandothers.Itwould meanhidingourfacesandsilencing ourvoices".
Towards theendofhismessage, he speaks about the fact that digital innovation cannotbestopped butit is necessary for each one of us to raiseourvoice indefence ofhuman persons so that we can truly assimilate these tools as allies. He states,"Thisallianceispossible, but needs to be based on three pillars:responsibility, cooperationandeducation" . He then elucidates each of these components which areinter-related butareessential in ensuringthatall communications arehuman.
Inthis powerful message, Pope Leo poses to all communicators, very specially to Catholic communicators, several serious challenges. Among them are: Are weprepared todoserious research,
critical thinking and communications with a human face? How many Catholic communicators in India have written extensively about the Special Investigative Revision (SIR) that has been taking place in India and disenfranchising millions of legitimate citizens?Howmanyhave written about whatis happening to the minorities in the country? How many have taken a stand against what is happening to the Adivasis and Dalits in the country? Have we been vocal against what is happening in the Car Nicobar Islands?
JustusingAImightgive usacertain perspective very easily. But we should beaware thatthis viewpoint maybe manipulative and cater mainly to those who try to control our lives anddestinies. Therefore, it isimportant toengage with thereal issue in a proactive, grassroots and critical manner to help us arrive at the truth. Sadly, in most cases, Catholiccommunicators inIndiaare trapped bythenew-age technology which often, as Pope Leo reminds us,takes us awayfrom whatis right andwhatistrue.
In his concluding statements, Pope Leo makes it abundantly clear, "We needfacesandvoicestospeakfor peopleagain.Weneedtocherish thegiftofcommunication asthe deepesttruthofhumanity, towhich alltechnologicalinnovationshould alsobeoriented".
Dowe Catholic communicators in
Indiahasthecourage tomakePope Leo's message a reality in our communications?

In its present critical confrontation with them, it has played its strategic cards skilfully. Initially firing low-cost drones & conventional missiles it impelledthemtoexpendtheirhighcost Patriot, David Sling & Thad interceptors. It then launched successive waves (100 by April 15) of its hypersonic missiles with “cluster ‘bombs’ payloads. As

Itsbases inQatar, Kuwait& Saudi Arabia have been soseverely damaged that an “emergency dispersal of personnel” has had to be made. Two of its aircraft carriers
have had to be “moved out of the war zone”, because of “accidental fires”onthem.
Israel’s losses are 18 UAVs, 2 Hermes 900 drones & “almost 500 of its land-armour assets -Merkava tanks, armoured vehicles and bulldozers”. Its Nevatim Airforce & Haifa Naval bases, Dimona nuclear research centre, Eilat & Ashdod ports, Ben Gurion airport & oil refinery, electricity & desalination plants have all suffered substantial damages.
Iran’sblocking theHormuz Strait & permitting only those ships which pay for its oil in Chinese Yuan is another clever move. Asia Times commented:“Iran’s Hormuz Yuan move is a direct hit on the Petro dollar. It is a deliberate attempt to fuse military geography with monetary strategy.”
The more the Petro Dollar is replaced, the more difficult will servicing the enormous USnational debt become. It rose from $ 34.5 trillion in Jan.2024 to$39.5 trillion in Jan. 2026. Since then, it has
probably risen by a further 0.3 trillion. Its belligerent “close ally” Israel is primarily responsible for this.
Reputed Jewish historian Ilan Pape, who has written many books since his 2006 ‘The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine’ has titled his latest 2025 book, ‘Israel on the Brink’. Facts pertinent tothisprediction are:
On March 31, 2026, Bank of Israel reported that the 30-month multi front war had cost 177 billion shekels (US$58billion).
Since January 2024. Israel’ exports of polished diamonds have plummeted 36%;its touristarrivals by 90%. The losses caused by the latterare$3.4billion
150,000 Israelis, many of them hitech professionals, have exited IsraelsinceJanuary2024.

As Israel’s multi front wars are making its cities more & more like Gaza, its citizens are increasingly craving for peace. Prominent amongthem is Mika Almog, former Prime Minister Shimon Peres’s granddaughter. She works with a coalition of 50 peacebuilding organisations namedItsTime.Asits director she regularly organizes workshops, musicconcerts &peace events to “galvanise Israelis & Palestinians towards asharedvision ofpeace&harmony”
Abroad, pro-Palestinian events, manyledby‘JewishVoiceforPeace’ & ‘Rabbis for Palestine’ have been held in over 200 US, European, Asian, African & Latin American citiesin thelasttwoyears.
In an October 2025 UN General Assembly vote, 174 countries voted in favor of Palestinian selfdetermination. Just 4 countries, –
USA, Israel Micronesia & Nauru –voted against.
The above scenario is quite similar to South Africa’s on the eve of the collapse of its Apartheid regime in February 1990 & the release of its long imprisoned “terrorist” leader. Some months thereafter that country it was transformed from a “Pariah State”, into a “Rainbow Coalition” with universal adult franchise. Its President Nelson Mandela began to be hailed as the “ConscienceofMankind”.
On December 4, 1997, President Nelson Mandela’s had declared "Ourfreedom isincomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians," During his five-year tenure he consistently aligned the Palestinian struggle with thatagainstapartheid indiverse parts oftheworld.

Jerusalem is deeply sacred to Judaism, Christianity & Islam. Their most sacred places are all within walking distance of each other.
When Israel embraces Judaism’s noble precepts, Jerusalem would emerge asthe world’s prime venue for religious pilgrimage & icon for inter-religious harmony. When this happens Iran can take some credit forthistransformation byeffectively countering US & Israel’ ultra hightech armed forces with low-cost asymmetric warfare tools & a fearless, highlypatriotic people with deepfaithinthe Almighty.

F M Nandagaon. When Portuguese had made entry to the Tuticorin area, then there could have been the presence of Jesuitmissionaries also?
“Yes Father, you are absolutely right. Around 1540, Francis Xavier, a Jesuit priest from Goa converted good number of people from our community. But,theywere ignorant of Christianity due to the unintelligible Portuguese Language. Francis Xavier instructed them the Catholic Christian faith by using
poorly translated small catechism book, thus organised a Christian wayoflife.Hestarted manyschools in the coastal villages. The catechists, nominated and trained byhimtocarryonthespiritual work, received stipends from the Portuguese government. These catechists were stationed in the villages upanddown the 160km of coastlinetospreadandreinforcehis teachings. Francis Xavier also, converted people of Nadar, Mukkuvar and Paraiyar communities. This conversion ensured them that they could attempt to spread out, urbanize, acquire new skills and enter different professions. All these aided in the process of upward socialmobility.
“Vikirama Aditha Pandya was rewarded by the Portuguese. He was offered to manage the pearl diving on behalf of the Portuguese. He became known as Senhor dos Senhores –firstamongnotables and was recognised as headman and official intermediary by the Portuguese. Histitleofjatithalavan -headofthecastewaspasseddown through 21 other members of his
family. Community elders in the various villages were also among the early beneficiaries of Portuguese recognition, perhaps because they were the first to be converted. This has paved wayto a formal system of hierarchical control, basedonreligious authority andeconomicstanding.Thissystem was in existence till the first part of the twentieth century. Meantime, following Pope Clement XIV's dissolution oftheSocietyofJesusin 1773, resulted in a dearth of Catholic missionaries and priests in the area, enabling the jati thalavan and his fellow caste notables to assume the role of solemniser for rituals such as marriages in our community. It was the right of the jatithalavanalwaystomakethefirst tugof the rope which was attached toachariotcontainingthestatuette and which marked the start of the festivalofOurMotherMary.”
“Father, our community’s name Parawar has been recorded in the holybook Biblealso’’thisstatement made by MrRayanappeared to me quite something unusualclaim.
“WhichpartoftheholybookBible has reference to your Parawar
community?”
Though my sudden reaction causedsome kindofdisturbance to MrRayansaid“Father, becool.Iwill put everything in front you.” Then facing his face to Mr Joaquim, instructed him to bring the holy book Bible kept inashelfunder the altar.
“Look here Father” opening the HolyBible afterabrief silentprayer, Mr Rayan, started to refer from the second book of Chronicles of the old testaments. He said, “First sentence of the third chapter says, ‘King Solomon, started to build a temple on Mount Moriah in Jerusalem, where Lordhasgiven his darshan (appeared) to his father David.Thenthefifthsentenceofthe same chapter says, “The room was panelled with cedar and overlaid withfinegold, inwhichwereworked designs of palm trees and chain pattern.” And the sixth sentence says, “The king decorated the temple with beautiful precious stonesandwithgoldimported from the land of Parvaim. In the Jerusalem Talmud, Parvaim is explained asreferring tothe quality ofthe gold, i.e.,pure gold. Even the
festivalcartofOurLadyofSnows of Tuticorin is heavily adorned with gold. Historians recorded that during the days of the Sangam period rule of Cheras, the Cholas and the Pandyas, females of our community were famous for the longest ears and for wearing the heaviest and most expensive gold earrings and other jewels made of gold.’’
After a brief silence, Mr Rayan said in a commanding voice, “Look Father, the Gold that had gone to Jerusalem temple, was from the landofParvaim, the landwhich was occupied by Paravar community people. There is no chance for any kind of doubts in this matter. Fr. Henrique Henriques also known as Anrique Anriquez, who was a Portuguese Jesuit priest and missionary of sixteenth century is the first European Tamil scholar also, upheld this opinion. He is sometimes called The Father of the Tamil Press. After his death his mortal remains were buried in Our Lady of Snows Basilica in Tuticorin. Henrique Henriques, hadtaughtour forefathers that "in the beginning there were no Muslims, only Jews
and Tamils.’’ Further A scholar by name Patrick A. Roche in his book, Fishermen ofCoramendal, recorded that we, “the Paravas are the Parvaims, one of the last tribes of Israelandourpresentsettlement of Uvari in Paravanadu is the Ophir of the Bible. Uvari is situated down south towards Kanvakurnari on the FisherCoast.”
Ten Lost Tribes of Israel, 10 of theoriginal12Hebrewtribes,which, undertheleadershipofJoshua, took possession ofCanaan, thePromised Land, afterthedeathofMoses. They were named Asher, Dan, Ephraim, Gad, Issachar, Manasseh, Naphtali, Reuben, Simeon, and Zebulun all sons or grandsons of Jacob. In 930 BC the 10 tribes formed the independent Kingdom of Israel in the north and the 2 other tribes, Judah and Benjamin, set up the Kingdom ofJudahinthesouth.
Iwasjustwonder struck. Icame know many new things about the existence ofChristianity in southern India, that too Tamil Nadu in particular. Onecannotdenythefact that, thegoldhadbeenimported to Jerusalem from this part of our country since immemorial times,
because we had gold mining units in manyparts of south India itself.I was just thinking, ultimately when Portuguese settled in Goa after getting defeatedbyotherEuropean trading companies ofthattime and whathappenedtothesepeople? Mr Rayan, who seems tohave guessed the thinking in my mind, continued hisstory.
“Then, during the year 1658, control of the fisheries passed from the Portuguese to the Dutch from along with sovereignty over this region. The new rulers, who were Protestant, tried unsuccessfully to convert us to their own faith. But they failed in their attempts as becauseOurLadyofSnowscultwas deep rooted among us. The Dutch turned many churches into warehouses andbannedthefeastof Our Lady of Snows for few years. This event had originated when a wood statuette of the Virgin Mary was moved by the Portuguese to the church of OurLady of Mercy at Tuticorin in 1582, its installation being celebrated with a nine-day feast which was subsequently repeated annually and much enjoyed by the residents of
Tuticorin. During the period of Catholic repression, the Dutch East India Company also expelled all Catholic priests and outlawed Catholic baptisms andother rituals. The Dutch established a cloth factoryinTuticorin, andthispaveda way for our community to become cloth traders and merchants. Due to cotton export activities, it had carved its own place as one of the largest port in the eastern coast of India.”
“Later the British East India Company whichgained upper hand in the supremacy among the European trading companies in India, seized Tuticorin in 1785. These British, like Dutch people were followers of Protestant Christianfaith.Inthebeginningthey restricted the entry of Catholic Christian missionaries in the territory.”
“When the Jesuit missionaries returned inthe 1830s, following the revival of their Society by the then Pope Pius VIIin the year1814, they were shocked atthe lapse informal religious observance andin general Christian morality. They also came across with the dilapidated state of
the churchesandrich jatithalavans. They started to revive the situation. The Jesuits decided in 1841 to attempt to re-assert their authority over the community and to reduce the prominence of jati thalavans. The Jesuits had even tried to establish an alternative cathedral the Sacred Heart, in the hope of drawingworshippers fromOurLady of Snows where the jati thalavans claimed their authority over religious rituals. At times jati thalavans failed to stop the strikes taking place among the pearl and chank divers. The introduction of newtechnologies inthepost-World War II era significantly affected the entire elite of the nation. The developments such asnylon fishing nets, refrigeration andmotorisation made fishing more lucrative as an occupation and removed the economic differences between the labourers and traders. The role of the jati thalavan became more impossible and was eventually abandoned. The ceremonial role of the jati in religious observance and ceremony was gradually reduced, including the removal of status symbols such as the special seat thattheyoccupiedduringMass. But
there is still a ritual element today surrounding certain events at Our Lady of Snows during annual celebrations which existed for centuries before.

IfoneweretoreadAdilRustomjee’s delightful book, Running Behind Lakshmi, which covers the journey
ofcapitalmarkets inIndiaforovera century, one would conclude that change is the only constant in the capital markets. Over the last five years the pace of change has accelerated even more. From $ 3.1 trillion in FY 23, the market capitalization in India scaleda peak of $ 5.6 trillion in September 2024 mainly because of large cap surge. Companies with over Rs 1 lac market capitalization increased from only 2 in 2004 to 81 by 2024. But in early 2026 India’s market capitalization was down at $ 4.97 trillion. In the global pecking order Indiafindsitselfinthe5th placewith about 4% share of the global capitalization. But much smaller countries like Taiwan and South Koreaaresnappingatourhealswith marketcapitalizationof$4.67and$ 4.59 trillion, respectively and
growing much more rapidly. While FIIholdinginIndiaisat16.3%ofthe market, a 14-year low and still coming down, they continue to invest in Taiwan and Korea. More sobering is the fact that just one company, namely, Nvidia of the US has market capitalization of $ 5.27 trillion, muchhigherthanthethatof 5000 plus listed companies inIndia. The explanation to this lopsided churn lies in the euphoric expectation around massive AI investments that are sweeping the markets, despite AI capex currently vastly outpacing AI revenue. In a recent report, JP Morgan, while downgrading India’s weight to ‘Neutral’, said that large cap index (Sensex/Nifty) had minimal AI, data centre and semiconductor representation relative to Korea, Taiwan,ChinaandeventheUK.
In studying the churn in the Sensex over 10year slots, Ambit Capital foundthatthechurnpeakedat67% (20 replacements in the 30-stock index) in the years following the 1991 reforms (1993-95). It then fell toalow of 27% (8replacements) in 2004-14. But Ambit Capital which was betting on new-age companies
breaking into the Sensex, got its 2015 prognosis, that by 2025 the likesofRelianceIndustries,L&T,SBI, TataSteel, etc.,couldretire fromthe benchmark, wrong. The important point is that, despite all the prevailing hype about its tech prowess, India has missed the AI bus. But it may still not be too late to cover lost ground. Old economy companies, especially in the defense, energy, automobile andoil sectors, are adopting both AI and robotics tostayrelevant.Revolution is happening in fintech too. New age companies like National Payments Corporation of India and NationalStockExchangearewaiting in the wings which on listing may not take too long to break into the benchmark. However, we need more such companies that have scales to take on global giants in sunrise fields of semiconductors, green hydrogen, renewable energy, electric vehicles, data centres, aerospace andbiotechnology.
Capital markets are witnessing churn of yet another kind. NSE’s latest Market Pulse report points outthatover thelastthree decades global markets have undergone
marked shift in sectoral composition. US Markets, for instance, have seen sharp rise in technology dominance, while China hastransitioned fromrealestateled model to a balanced mix of technology and financials. On the other hand, Japan’s market structure has remained relatively stable, with gradual diversification. India’s transition has been distinct. From a commodity led market to one increasingly dominated by financials, alongside adeclining
share of materials and energy. According to the NSE report, while there is rising concentration in the US markets, India hasmoved in the opposite direction, with declining concentration indicating broader dispersion acrossfirms andsectors.
This isreflectedinthe facttheretail investors are channeling increasing amounts into flexi cap and welldiversified large and multi-cap funds. The following table gives sector-wise shareofcapitalizationin Indiaoverthe last30years.
Source: LSEG Workspace, NSE EPR
Another major shift is ownership change in aggregate shareholding in the Indian capital market. As per Prime Database, FPI holding which peakedat25.72%inMarch2023fell toa14yearlowof16.3%in2026. In contrast domestic institutional investors (including MFs at 11.1%) have hit a peak of 18.72% of holdings.
FPI holdings increased in communication services and energy, while there was decline or nochangeinother sectors. ButFPIs continue toremain thelargest nonpromoter shareholders in financials. Unlike earlier periods when a handful of sectors or stocks drove market movement, the current diversification signals a clear progression towards market maturity. But what does “market maturity” reallymean?Consider the factthatthe S&P500 isexpected to deliver earnings growth of about
25% in CY 26 and trades 22 times forward earnings. In contrast, the Nifty 500 is projected to post earnings growth of only 8% in FY 2026, yet trades at similar valuations. What this means is marketcapitalization inIndiaislead more bymultiple (PE)whichoftenis a function of sentiment(hype). The markets sooner than later will have to reckon with the reality of middlingearningsandthatdoesnot say much for market maturity in India. No wonder FPI are marching out of the Indian market in hordes. Well, policy makers and regulators might still reach out for the figleaf saying that market maturity facilitates risk management with reduced volatility. But this explanation hides the fact that Indian economy seems reluctant to invest enough in Research and Development and hence shy of exploring new technologies and scriptingastoryofgloballeadership in a new and emerging sector. A storyoflostopportunities?

Washington, May 23: Indianorigin entrepreneur Pooja Bavishi has transformed a simple homemade ice cream experiment into a thriving business in the United States, with her brand Malai now generating nearly $2.8 million in annual revenue.
Founded in 2015, Malai has grown into a profitable wholesale and ecommerce icecream company with four outlets spread across New York, Philadelphia and Washington DC. The brand has gained popularity for introducing Indianinspiredflavourssuchascardamom,

Before entering the food business, Bavishi studied urban planning at London School of Economics and worked as a civil rights project coordinator at the Equal Rights Center in Washington DC.

Determined to understand customer preferences before expanding, Bavishi spent time testing flavours and studying consumer behaviour to build a sustainable business model. Her venture later gained attention after being praised byafoodwriter from The New York Times.
With support from a small friendsand-family funding round in 2017, she launched pop-ups and temporary food hall outlets across New York, gradually expanding the business.

Adayafterhishumiliation,Putinhas indicated his willingness to talk directly toZelenskyy. This must have been a very difficult andhumiliatingadmissiongiventhe hatredPutin hasforZelenskyy.
According to Kyiv Post and RBC-Ukraine, Fico publicly relayed Putin’s reaction after delivering a messagefromVolodymyr Zelenskyy
that Ukraine was ready to meet Putin“inanyformat”forpeacetalks. Putin’s response, as conveyed by Fico, was conditional, but more open thaninthe past.
If President Zelenskyy wants negotiations, he must personally callPutinbyphone toinitiate them. Fico emphasized that Putin refuses to initiate contact himself, placing
the burden of outreach squarely on Kyiv.
Putin was attempting to preserve some semblance of respect and dignity.
Fico said the message from Zelenskyywasconveyedfollowinga personal meetinginArmeniabefore FicotraveledtoMoscow.
Fico attended the Victory Day parade, or what there was of it, where he personally delivered the message toPutin.
Putin reportedly added that any meetingcouldoccuroutside Russia, but only after a final agreement is prepared, not as an open-ended negotiation.
Fico strongly defended diplomacy, saying talks are “a thousand times more useful than mutual killing,” and praised the U.S.-brokered three-day ceasefire (May 9–11) as necessaryspacefordialogue.
The Kremlin partially contradicted Fico, with Putin aide Yuri Ushakov stating that no formal “message” from Zelenskyy was delivered, only a recap of Fico’s conversation with him.
This was untrue. What motive did Fico have to lie about his conversation with Putin?
This has raised questions about whether Fico was acting as a mediator or publicly interpreting theexchange onhisown terms.
Fico is the only EU head of government toattend Russia’sMay 9Victory Dayevents, callinghimself theEU’s“blacksheep.”
The other black sheep, Viktor Orban, was just voted out of office onApril 12.
•Putin’s insistence on a direct call shifts responsibility to Zelenskyy while allowing Moscow to signal “openness” without conceding initiative.
EU leaders have criticized Fico’s Moscowtrip, while Ficorejects what he calls a “new Iron Curtain” between theEUandRussia.
Hopefully Fico will have an open and honest discussion with Putin aboutthewar.Andtheneedtoend the war. And how Putin’s original objectives arenolongerattainable.

Omar Abdullah has sparked fresh political discussion after openly acknowledging the cooperation his government has received from the BJP-ledCentreunderPrimeMinister Narendra Modi — despite deep ideological differences between the two sides.
In a statement that surprised many observers, Abdullah saidthecentral government could have taken a confrontational path after the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference returned to power in
the 2024 Assembly elections. Instead, he claimed the Centre chose administrative cooperation over political hostility, especially in matters linked to funding and infrastructure growth.
According to him, Jammu and Kashmir received stronger-thanexpected financial backing, including additional capital investment assistance and development-oriented allocations aimed at improving infrastructure andpublicprojectsacrosstheUnion Territory.
While praising the financial cooperation, Abdullah maintained his criticism over the continued delay in restoring full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. He suggested that many residents feel the prolonged wait is unfair, especially afterparticipating democratically in the electoral process.
His remarks highlighted a political reality now emerging in the region: cooperation on

governance and development disagreement on constitutional and political issues
Political analysts view Abdullah’s comments as a carefully calibrated approach one that avoids direct confrontation with the Centre on governance matters while still keeping pressure alive on the statehood issue.
The statement isalsobeing seen as a rare public acknowledgement of coordination between rival political camps in modern Kashmir politics, where tensions between regional
parties and the Centre have often dominated national headlines.
As debates over Jammu and Kashmir’s future constitutional framework continue in 2026, Abdullah’s remarks reflect a pragmatic model of politics where administrative collaboration and political disagreement coexistatthe same time.
His message signals thateven amid ideological rivalry, development, funding, and governance may still remain areas of sharedcooperation between SrinagarandNewDelhi.
