1995)

We are still celebrating the Jubilee Year2025with thecentralmessage: “Pilgrims ofHope”. On19th October 2025 the Church celebrates the World Mission Day which falls within the Jubilee Year. Three months before his death, Pope Francis of happy memory, gave his message for World Mission Sunday 2025ontheFeastoftheConversion of St. Paul (25 January 2025) with the theme: “Missionaries of Hope amongallPeoples”. Hereminds us of our fundamental vocation, as individual Christians and the entire Church to be messengers and

builders ofhope.

Jesus Christ, in his earthly life went about doing good and healing all from evil and the Evil One (cf. Acts 10:38) restoring hopein God to the needy and the people, thus preaching the good news of the kingdom of God. Weare expected to walk in his footsteps. “Jesus became divine missionary of hope, the supreme model of all those down the centuries who carry out their own God-given mission, even amidst extreme trials.” Through his disciples he continues his ministry

of hope for humanity. The Lord wants “not a static Church, but a missionary Church that walks with her Lord through the streets of the world.” Therefore, we ought to become signs and messengers of hope for all, in every place and circumstance thatGod has granted us to live. Pope Francis exhorts us: “May all baptized, as missionary disciples of Christ, make his hope shine forth in every corner of the earth”.

Quoting Gaudium et Spes, the Vatican Constitution on theChurch in the Modern World, Pope Francis says: “The joys and hopes, the grief and anguish of the people of our time, especially of those who are poor and afflicted, are thejoys and hopes, thegrief and anguish of the followers ofChrist aswell” (G.S.1)

Therefore, Pope Francis invites us “to carry out the works mentioned intheBullofIndiction oftheJubilee (Nos 7-15) with particular attention tothepoorestandweakest, thesick, theelderlyandthoseexcludedfrom materialistic and consumerist society. And to do so with Godʼs style with closeness, compassion

and tenderness, cultivating a personal relationship with our brothers andsisters in their specific situation”. Incidentally as Pope observes, often they are the ones whoteachushowtoliveinhope.

Further Pope Francis in his Mission Sunday Message exhorts us to renew the mission of hope: Faced with the urgency of the mission of hope today, Christʼs disciples are called first to discover how to become ‘artisansʼ of hope and restorers of an often distracted and unhappyhumanity.

QuotinghisownEncyclicalEvangelii Gaudium , No.275PopeFrancissays: “Christ, risen and glorified, is the wellspring of our hope, and he will not deprive us of the help weneed to carry out the mission which he hasentrusted tous”.

The great commission to go and preachthegoodnewstoallcreation is still valid and more urgent today than ever before. “And he said to them, go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Whoever believes and is baptized willbesaved, butwhoever

does not believe will be condemned”. (Mk.16:16; cf. also Mt.28:19-20). It is our duty as disciples of Christ today tocarry on the mission of proclaiming the Gospel inourtime.

Missionaries of hope are men and women of prayer, for “the person who hopes is a person who prays”, forprayer istheprimary missionary activity and at the same time the firststrength ofhope.

In the current situation of Anticonversion laws enacted in 12 States of India and the very hostile situation created by fundamentalists and fanatic forces to stop all conversions, prayer will be our chief weapon to combat those evil forces. When we cannot preach and propagate, we can at leastpray.Wepreachmorethrough our actions, that is exemplary life, than through words. Let us hope that the Apex Court in the country

upholds and promotes the fundamental right to freedom of conscience and to profess, practise and propagate religion as guaranteed in the Constitution of India.

May Mary the Star of Evangelization, inspire and help us to become authentic witnesses to Christ, thesource andwellspring of ourhope.

Fr. Hedwig Lewis SJ: A Very Extraordinary Person (VEP)!

A few weeks ago, JesuitFr. Hedwig Lewisreleasedhislatestbook ‘Being Extraordinarily Ordinaryʼ (30 Strategies for Wholesome Living)!

This extraordinary book is compact and concise, direct with no frills attached! It makes for compelling reading, challenging one to live a more meaningful life, in practical do-able ways, to be a person that makes a difference by doing ordinary things in an extraordinary way! The flyer on the book states, “This book is all about ‘being extraordinaryʼ in every significant aspect of life, with the aid of ‘ordinaryʼ – down-to-earth –

strategies, mind-tools and handsontechniques.The30themesinthis manual are so presented as to engagethereaderin‘out-of-theboxthinkingʼ,andchallengingthem topursuehighervaluesthanthey routinely would. An excellent resourceforyouthanimatorsandas ‘prizesʼforstudents.Amotivational guidefortheyoungandyoung-atheart!” The book has been published by ‘Better Yourself Booksʼ, St Paul Press, India. In more ways than one, thebook is thesum and substance of the life which Fr Hedwig has lived and as he completes on 10 October, the eightieth year of his pilgrimage on earth! He is, in essence, a Very Extraordinary Person (VEP)!

Fr. Hedwig is a priest, Jesuit, educationist, writer, counsellor and much more, all rolled in one. He is indeed a VEP who has contributed to andimpacted profoundly on the lives of many all over, through his life of witness, his incisive writings

and of his uncanny ability to keep abreastwith thetimes. Allthismust seem to be perfectly normal for most humans - but the difference where Fr Hedwig is concerned, that he has been doing all this and achieving a tremendous amount, in spite of suffering from a severe physicalhandicap.VEPstrength!

In 1990, he was appointed the principal of the prestigious St. Xavierʼs College in Ahmedabad. In notime, withFrHedwigatthehelm of affairs, the college had reached new heights in every possible field. FrHedwighadmanymoreyearsleft as Principal. But God had other plans for him: during a Community Eucharistic Celebration on 4 October1995(the FeastofStFrancis

of Assisi), he began to have some uncontrollable spasms of his upper body (Fr. Hedwig recollects that it was a week before his fiftieth birthday). Afterplenty of check-ups anddiagnosis andvisits tosome of thebestphysicians andsurgeons, it was found that he was affected by Meige syndrome. This is a rare involuntary movement condition that affects the brain and nerves (neurological condition). It causes musclespasmsthatoneisunableto control. It may make oneʼs jaw twitch or force one to close oneʼs eyes. These muscle spasms can be painful. Meige syndrome is said to persist throughout life in most patients, gradually worsening over many years. Fr. Hedwigʼs, entire upper body is affected, making it really tough for him! His ability to dealwith this infirmity makes hima VEP!

But Fr. Hedwig has taken this physical disability in his stride! For more than thirty years now, despite several odds he has continued relentlessly giving of his best to others, radiatingpositivityandhope to many whose lives hetouches! In his book ‘Being Extraordinarily

Ordinaryʼ, mentioned above, Chapter 9 is entitled ‘Embrace Your Vulnerabilityʼ. in which he writes, “vulnerability is a gift…. embrace vulnerability and live life to the fullest.” Strangely and significantly enough, Fr Hedwig seems to be conveying (without saying so) that one motto that has guided him all these years, despite his vulnerabilities, he has lived life to the fullest and has others to do so to! Thatʼs what makes Fr. Hedwig a VEP!

What then, are the other qualities which make Fr Hedwig a VEP? Among the many outstanding qualitieswhichheembodies, arethe following:

Humility: theabilitytoaskandtobe cheerfullydependent on others

Exemplary: it has not been easy going but he has reached out to manyallover

Determination: to transcend his physicaldisability andmakehimself useful

Wise:asreflectedinhismanybooks where hewrites “words ofwisdom”

Inclusive: he has a whole range of friends and admirers, from every walkoflife

Generous: as he lives the Ignatian axiom ‘to give and not to count the costʼ!

Theabove qualities arean acronym of his name HEDWIG- though they certainly do not encapsulate all the extraordinary qualities he radiates. Interestingly, the name ‘Hedwigʼ is of Germanic origin meaning ‘battle strifeʼ or ‘contending in battleʼ; historically, the name conveyed strength and warrior-like qualities. Such an apt namefor a person like St.IgnatiusofLoyola, whohasbeen a ‘fighterʼ all his life! The stuff of a VEP!

BeingExtraordinarilyOrdinaryis Fr. Hedwigʼs 46th book! Some record indeed! In the Catholic Church in India, heisperhaps apriestwhohas authored the greatest number of books. Hewrites onawide-range of subjectslikespirituality, prayer, skillbuilding, biographies, inspirational, history, festivals.Amonghisnotable works are FunwithWords (1983), HowtoStudy (1984), Home with God (1991), Happiness Manufacturers (2001), Mirrors of Life (1998), Once Upon a Time (2010), BodyLanguagewhich is an

international bestseller with over 20,000 copies sold. Some of his books have been translated into different Indian languages andinto Spanish and Lithuanian. Onlya VEP candothis!

When Fr. Hedwig was asked recently, “what has kept you going all these years?” With his typical smile, pat came the reply. “Idraw inspirationfromthe‘SmilingChrist on the Crossʼ, a sculpture of unknown origin hanging in the Xavier Castle, Spain. My motto: ‘Abundant Living, Joyful Givingʼ (John10.10).Mywritingapostolate: mybooksaremypulpits, myarticles – messengers oftheGoodNews”. He goes on to add, “After my Diamond Jubilee (June 2024)in response to well-wishers, I remarked: “MyJesuitlifehastwo equalhalves.ThefirstIinvestedas ‘a contemplative in actionʼ; the secondIspendas‘acontemplative inreactionʼ.”Aterrificresponse

fromaVEP!

Fr. Hedwig, who belongs to the SocietyofJesus(GujaratProvince)is based in Ahmedabad. He has been a Jesuit for more than sixty-one years now; hewas ordained in April 1977, which makes it more than forty-eight years of priesthood. So as hecompletes eighty years of life on earth one must truly celebrate this VEP who believes in the joy of giving (do visit his website http://joygift.tripod.com)

Congratulations dear Fr. Hedwig Lewis, you truly are a Very ExtraordinaryPerson(VEP)!

GANDHI’S GLOBAL IMPACT

Author of ‘Gandhi’s Outstanding Leadership’ & ‘Gandhi:

The Soul Force Warrior books

The 20th century is historyʼs most blood stainedone, particularly inits firsthalfinwhich 90 million people, mostly civilians, were killed in two world wars, Hitlerʼs gas chambers, atom bomb drops on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and national liberation struggles inAsia&Africa. It was also its most revolutionary one with Fascist revolutions taking place in Italy, Germany and Spain andMarxist revolutions in Russia & China in its firsthalf. The latter two

were replete with violence in keeping with Leninʼs maxim “Violence is the midwife of all old societies pregnant with newlife”.

Amazingly, its second half witnessed many nonviolent Soul Force evolutions in countries as far apart as Philippines, Poland, United

States, South Africa & Chile. Each hasalocalnamebutallofthemare now generally called “Velvet” revolutions! Roger Markwick has written abook titled ‘From Violence to Velvet: A Century of Revolutions 1917 – 2017ʼ

In a 1932 BBC interview, asked about his ideology, Gandhi had responded inthefollowing words: “Thereisanindefinablemysterious powerthatpervadeseverything,a livingpowerthatischangeless, that holds all together, that creates, dissolvesandrecreates.Satyagraha isSoulForce pureandsimple. It connotesthelivingLawofLife. This law willwork, justasthelawof gravitation willwork, whether we acceptitornot…Inpolitics, itsuse isbasedontheimmutablemaxim thatgovernmentofthepeopleis possible only so long as they

consent either consciously or unconsciouslytobegoverned”.

His subsequently enunciated praxis forSoulForcewas”toputthewhole forceofone'ssoulagainstthewillof the tyrant” and be assured that “Working under this law of our being, itis possible for asingle individualtodefythewholemight ofanunjustempire andlaythe foundationforthatempire'sfallor regeneration”

Gandhiʼs success in non-violently plucking “the brightest jewel in the British Crown” and bringing down the most extensive empire in the world, on which “the sun never set” is the best example of the potency & efficacy of his “Soul Force” ideology &praxis.

Revolutionary changes in India and the world in the last 70 years are listed hereunder. India was transformed from a highly feudal, franchise restricted, women suppressed, caste, poverty, and famine plagued colony into a constitutional democracy based on universal adult franchise and a highly industrialised, technologically advanced state.

Since Independence it has had two Dalit (“untouchable”), two Muslim and two women Presidents, & a woman &aSikh PrimeMinister.

Over 100 former colonies, comprising two-third of global population and three-fourth of its land area have gained independence.

All East European Communist dictatorships have ended, the Warsaw Pact scrapped, the Berlin Wall brought down, Germany reunified, the Soviet Union dissolved, and democratic regimes established in most of its former component states, many of which are now members of the European Union.

Military dictatorships have been brought down in the Philippines, Chile& Bolivia & Apartheid /Racial Oppression ended in South Africa / USA.

Philippines & Chile have had their first women presidents, Bolivia its first indigenous Aymara president, South Africa its first African president & USA its first Black PresidentintheWhiteHousewhose

Oval Office now had photos of Mohandas Gandhi & Martin Luther Kimgadorning it. These radicalchanges are themost sweeping democratization of national politics and international politicalgeography inworld history.

Dr. Johan Galtung, Professor of PeaceStudies atUppsala University, in his ‘The Way is the Goalʼ book, has written “Gandhi was certainly a revolutionary, much more revolutionary than he piecemeal revolutionaries of Western civilization who triggered the Bourgeois, Socialist & Feminist revolutions. Gandhi revolutionized revolution itself.”

Martin Luther King has averred “If humanity is to progress, Gandhi is inescapable. He lived, thought, and acted, inspired by the vision of humanity evolving toward a world

of peace and harmony. We may ignore himatour own risk”.

Harvard Professor Gene Sharp, in his book ‘Waging Non-Violent Struggle: 20th Century Promise; 21st Century Potentialʼ has written “Gandhiwas anexperimenter in the development of “war without violenceʼ. His pioneering work was not always adequate, but it is of

major historic significance both in ethics and in politics for he always strove to find the way to act peacefully yet effectivelyto oppose oppression andinjustice”

The six part ‘Force More Powerfulʼ film series produced by York Zimmerman & WETA Washington presents actual footage of Soul Force revolutions in India, USA, South Africa, Denmark (under Nazi occupation), Poland & Chile. They all begin with a two-minute focus on Gandhi in a South African jail in 1907 averring “Out of these jail gatesʼ we shall pass from our present bondage to freedom”. The narrator, Ben Kingsley, then states this young lawyer from India inspired his fellow Indians to fight for their rights & taught them that nonviolentrefusaltocooperatewith injustice was the way to end it” & concludes declaring “The power thatGandhidiscoveredchangedthe 20th century.”

BICYCLE- A FRIEND TO THE NATURE AND HUMAN

Roshan Dsouza, Kinnigoli

We all know the usage and importance of Bicycle. All of us might haveridden thebicycle inour childhood or in the later stages of our life. Let us know some of the interesting things about thecyclein thisarticle.

Cycle was invented around 200 yearsagobyCarlVandresin1817 in Germany. It was not that type of

cycle which we are using in the current generation. It was made of wooden body with wooden tyres. Gradually due to the inconvenient, again they made the research and different types of cycles were invented. It reached around 1890s, the cycle invented which is like the cyclewhich weareusing now. World Bicycle Day is celebrated internationally on June 3rd of every year.We must really appreciate and thank to the inventors for inventing thecycleand contributed to us. Cycle was very much useful in the public in Late Nineties and first decades of 20s. In the cities and public roads, we have seen cycle were used maximum for the domestic use in these eras. These days we are watching the usage of bicycle is limited only up to the small children. This should not happen. Parents should not encourage the children for the usage motorcycles.

Gradually the petrol vehicles became familiar and due to the good economic conditions of the people, people attracted towards the motorcycles and bicycles gradually lost their importance and roles inthemarket.

Iwould like tosay, bicycle isthegift of God to us by the inventors. It is friendly towards the nature and no pollution, whereas motorcycles create noise and air pollution. Also, cycle isthe economic vehicle where nocostrequired foranykind offuel. Onlyonetimecostforpurchaseand it will last for long life if we do a better maintenance on daily or weekly basis.

Also riding a bicycle donates plenty of benefits to us which we may not be aware. Itʼs a good form of exercise. These days due to the practiseofjunkfoodandchangesof the lifestyle, we are facing lot of health issues and life span of the human is reduced. Let us point out

what are the benefits by riding a bicycle.

1) Our body becomes slimmer by burning Fat and Cholesterol. Those who are fat and wants to become slim, ride a bicycle every day for at least 1 hour. 1Hour of cycling can burnupto500 KiloCalorieswhichis approximately 55 grams of Fat. If you ride every day for 1 hour and within a month you can reduce the fat of approximately 1.6 kg per month.

2) Prevents Heart Attack-It is scientifically proven that when we ride a cycle, more energy is consumed and all the fatblockages in the nerves are removed, and blood can be moved smoothly throughout the body. Heart Attack occurs only when there is blockage in the nerve cells and when blood cannotbe pumped.

3) Lungswork effectivelyRidingacycle makes our breaths faster and respiration system becomes smoother since we take long breaths and increase our heart beats and all the toxins inside the lungs are thrown away through our breath.

4) Sufficient Oxygen supply to the Brain-This is another advantage of

cycle. In the normal conditions it takes more energy for the heart to pump the blood to the brain since brainislocatedatthetoppartofthe body. When the sufficient blood is circulated to the brain, new nerve cellsareformed andduetothis, our memory power gets sharp and wiser.

5) Increases Stamina and gives mental fitnesswhichwillhelpustobemore active, stronger and overcome stressandtensions.Mentalhealthis very important along with the physical health.

6) Cycling enables Shining Skin and free of wrinkles by creating the protein called Collagen. These days, ladies are attracted towards the artificialmakeup.Rideabicycleand automatically your beauty will be increased, andskin willbe shiny.

7) Our leg joints, arms and bones get stronger since we paddle and balance the cycle through our hands.

8) Also, whenever you are depressed, sad or anything negativity happened in life which made you very dull and losing hope, ride a cycle midst the green nature, you willbesurprised toseehowyoucan overcome all the worries and

depressions and get a solution for your problems which can change your life. Thus, producing positive energy within you.

Thus, cycling having lot of benefits which is available free of cost and we must utilize this. Once upon a time majority of the public were using this transport and we must start again. Initially we must feel difficult because we areaddicted to the motorcycles and comfortable life.Itisbetter totake little struggle now and live a healthy life later rather staying in a comfortable life nowandending upwithsufferingof diseases and in hailing the medicines constantly.

I would advise each house should have a cycle and whenever you go thenearby location andnearest city up to 2-5 Km, bicycle is preferred rather than taking motorcycles. These days fuel prices also hiked, and nature is fully contaminated with the pollution by the human. This will benefit to our life and cost savingaswell.Evenyoucanride the cycle in the morning or evening as anexercise.

Iwould share some of the inspiring quotes asbelow.

“There is no happiness in medicine and there is no medicine like happiness”. “Prevention is better thancuring”,“Maintenance isbetter andcheaper thanrepairing whether itʼsformachine or humanbeing”

Finally, let us adopt all the facilities given by the nature and God and liveahealthylifebefore itʼstoolate. RideaBicycleandliveahealthylong life.

On Living the Legacy of Fr. Stan Swamy

Late evening of 8 October 2020, Fr Stan Swamy was summoned from ‘Bagaichaʼ in Ranchi (the Social Centre he founded in 2006 andwherehelived) bytheNational Investigation Agency (NIA)officials, totheirlocalheadquarters inRanchi city. He was immediately detained andkept intheir custody thewhole night. The next morning, he was flown to Bombay and unceremoniously thrown intoTaloja Jail. His incarceration followed months ofraids, interrogations, intimidation and harassment at the hands of the NIA. The treatment

meted out to him in jail was even worse. The frail, sickly and aged Jesuit priest (who turned 84 years, on 26 April2021) was firstdenied a straw sipper which he desperately needed, then not given the necessary, timely medicaltreatment and whilst imprisoned was treated inamostinhuman manner.Whenit wasjusttoolate, hewasadmittedto the Holy Family Hospital in Bandra, where he finally succumbed on 5 July2021. Hisdeath, asaprisonerof afascistregime, iswidely, regarded asaninstitutionalmurder.

Itis fiveyears to date, sinceFr Stan Swamy, wasarrestedandmorethan fouryearssincehewasmartyred for the cause of justice. The incontrovertible factis that, though Fr Stan is no longer physically present on this earth, he continues to live in the hearts and lives of many everywhere, very particularly the poor and the marginalised, the excluded and the exploited, the

Adivasis andtheDalits, anyone and everyone who are victims of injustice and inhumanity. Besides civil society members: academics and activists, civil libertarians and politicians, Jesuits, and other religious and priests, continue to misshimprofoundly andstillmourn his death. Despite the all-out hostility of the NIA, painstaking effortscontinueonseveralfronts,to prove theinnocenceofFrStan(and he was innocent) and that his incarceration was unwarranted, illegalandunconstitutional.

Though FrStanʼsdeathleftavoid in the heart of many, he did leave behind a rich legacy, which today many of those he inspired, are grappling with ways and means of how best they can internalise and actualise it. Itis not easy to so, it is indeed a challenge. Fr Stanʼs legacy embodies Compassion, Courage, Collaboration and Commitment. Certainlyatallorder – butgiven the reality, welive in today, it is a path, wehavenooption, buttofollow. In an effort to live and deepen this legacy, eighteenJesuitsoftheSouth AsianAssitancymetforatwo-day(5 &6 October, 2025) reflection at

Bagaicha, Ranchi. The meeting which wasorganised andhostedby the Jesuit team of Bagaicha, was path-breaking on several counts: the participants shared with each other theirprofound experiences of living, working with Fr Stan and of being inspired by him; of the many good things (events, programmes, memorial meets) that have been taking place after his death; and of the ‘much moreʼ that needs to be done, ifwearetogenuinely livethe legacyFrStan leftus.

Duringthereflection, theJesuitsrevisited some key documents which included the vision and mission of Bagaicha, theCommunity Meetings held there, the JCSA National Consultation held in Delhi in September 2021, the subsequent meetings of the Central Zone Jesuits. These documents enunciated a clear way of proceeding with concrete points of action, inorder torealisethelegacy of Fr Stan. In the National Consultation of Delhi for one, the participants (Jesuits and collaborators) unanimously formulated an incisive statement, ‘Reliving the Stan Moment: A

Clarion Callʼ . The statement had a doable action plan in order to keep alive the legacy which Stan has left us!

The recently held Bagaicha reflection in more ways than one synced with the National Consultation statement which said, “during the time together, we listened to touching insights of thosewhoknewFrStanwell, ofhow he walked the talk and of how ultimately, hehadtopaytheprice forthepeopleandtheircause-for whichhelived.Wealsosharedindepth spiritual conversations with oneanother.Weemphasizedthe incarnational spirituality which Fr Staninternalisedandactualised,as heaccompaniedtheAdivasis, the Dalitsandothersub-alternsintheir relentless struggle for a more humane, just, dignified, equitable and peaceful world. He willingly embracedtheCrossthatwasgiven tohim.”

The key question in the very meaningful, profound and interactive process was, “are we doingenough (individually and collectively) to internalise and

live Stan’s legacy today”? The answer was a unanimous, honest and heartfelt “NO!” Whilst the everyone did acknowledge the plenty of good being done all over (which theyfeltwereimportant and necessary), there was also the feeling, that one should transcend mere ‘cosmeticizationʼ or ‘tokenism.ʼ Whatone also needs to deal with, is the fear factor, that throttles both the individual and collective and prevents one from beingvisibleandvocalwherecritical issues are concerned. The Jesuits alsofeltstrongly thattheremustbe a paradigm shift in attitudes, approaches andactions, ifonetruly wishes to live Fr Stanʼs legacy. Indicators for this include emphasis on movement rather than on institutions, to be in the midst of the people , toaccompany them in their struggles , to collaborate with like-minded individuals and groups ,to engage in research based advocacy and to be courageous enough to take visible prophetic stands against the powerful and other vested interest..Fr Stanʼs legacy, whichisessentiallythefaithjustice mandate of the Society of Jesus, needs to permeate in all

Jesuit ministries and initiatives today, beginning with formation.

Justbefore heleftBagaicha andhis arrestinOctober2020, Fr.Stansaid, “overthelasttwodecades,Ihave identifiedmyselfwith theAdivasi peopleandtheirstruggleforalife ofdignityandself-respect…Inthis process,Ihaveclearlyexpressedmy dissent over several policies and lawsenactedbythegovernmentin thelightoftheIndianConstitution. I have questioned the validity, legalityandjustnessofseveralsteps takenbythegovernmentandthe ruling class. If this makes me a ‘deshdrohiʼ, thensobeit.Weare partoftheprocess.InawayIam happytobepartofthisprocess.I amnotasilentspectator, butpartof thegameandreadytopaytheprice whateverbeit….I/wemustbeready tofacetheconsequences.Iwould justaddthatwhatishappeningto meisnotunique.Manyactivists, lawyers, writers, journalists, student leaders, poets, intellectuals and otherswhostandfortherightsof Adivasis, Dalits and the marginalised and express their dissenttotherulingpowersofthe countryarebeingtargeted.Grateful

toallwhohavestoodinsolidarity withmealltheseyears.”

Fr. Stan today challenges us all, Jesuits andothers tolivethelegacy hehasleftus, inaprofound wayby ourpresence amongthepeople, by our participation in their struggles and joys, by partnering through a shared vision and mission, with otherwomen andmenofgood will, by having the courage to play a prophetic roleandaboveall, tobea pilgrim a hope. From Taloja jail he wrote, “myneedsarelimited.the AdivasisandtheSocietyofJesus, havetaughtmetoleadasimple life…Listeningtothelifenarratives ofthepoorprisonersismyjoyin TalojaJail…IseeGodintheirpains and smiles… Many of suchpoor undertrials donʼt know what chargeshavebeenput onthem, havenotseentheirchargesheetand justremainforyearswithoutany legalorotherassistance.The16coaccusedhavenotbeenabletomeet each other aswe are lodged in different jails or different ‘circlesʼ withthesamejail”; he concludes, “butwewillstillsinginchorus.A cagedbirdcanstillsing”.

The Bagaicha reflection has energised theJesuitparticipants, to do all they can, to live Fr Stan Swamyʼs legacy in an uncompromising and prophetic way, and not to be afraid whatever theconsequences onemayhaveto face!

Spinning Dreams and Singing Hope:

Krisben Music’s Melodic World for Children

When it comes to lullabies or childrenʼs songs in the Konkani language, the choices are remarkably few. Among the most cherishedare“DolMhojeaBai”from the classic film Nirmonand “Nido Bala” by the legendary Melwyn Peris.

These timeless melodies have gently lulledgenerations ofchildren to sleep in the loving embrace of their Konkani-speaking parents. Their soothing tunes and heartfelt lyrics beautifully reflect the warmth and tenderness of Konkani culture, preserving a deep and enduring emotional bond between parent andchild. With the rise of digital platforms such as YouTube and Spotify,

numerous Konkani singles are now reaching audiences across the globe, givingnewlifetotheregionʼs musical heritage. Amidst this growing wave of independent releases, Krisben Music stands out asadedicated production housefor Konkani music videos.

Founded and managed by Christopher Roshan Lobo of Bahrain,Krisben Music hasplayed a pivotal role in shaping the modern Konkani music scene. The label is behind several acclaimed hits including “Birbiro Pavs,” “Maicho Paloʼnv,”“SheetoʼllVarya,”and many more, each celebrated for their lyrical beauty andcultural pride. The first song in the series, “Giant Wheela,” premiered on June 1st on Krisben Musicʼs official YouTube channel. Featuring vocals by young Josvita Nazareth from Bahrain, with lyrics by Lavi Gunjimutta and music composed by Roshan Dsouza Angelore, thetrackstandsoutforits catchy tune composed by Christopher and vibrant animation by Karthik Goldstone. Theanimated video featured beautiful landscapes andobjectsthatinspired children to expand their imagination as the

giant wheel turned. Praised for its creativity and child-friendly appeal, the song has received an enthusiastic response from viewers. The second song in the series, “Choʼnda Mama,” premiered on September 19th and quickly captured theheartsofMangalorean audiences. Sung with delightful charm by Aiden Sam DʼSouza and written by the talented C.V.Loretto, the song has become especially popular among children, often played at birthday celebrations and kidsʼ parties for its playful rhythm andjoyful tone.

The trackʼs vibrant music arrangement wascraftedbyRoshan DʼSouza Angelore, with audio recording done at Dreams Digital Media, Bahrain, and mixing and mastering expertly handled by Deepak Pinto atRDStudio, Kavoor–

Inspired by the overwhelming response, Krisben Music plans to release more songs in the series, designed to help children learn and enjoy Konkani through engaging and entertaining music. As an audience, it becomes our collective responsibility to support such initiatives that preserve our rich cultural heritage. These videos go

beyond mere entertainment, serving as a foundation for nurturing language, tradition, and identity among the younger generation.

Krisben Music also released a deeply moving song titled “Havn Ubo Ravtoʼlom,” a poignant composition, written byChristopher himself, that carries a powerful message of hope and resilience a song that truly deserves to touch hearts beyond all boundaries. The conceptbravely delvesintothedark and painful reality of child abuse, a subjectoftensilencedoroverlooked

within families due to social stigma and emotional fear. What remains unseen, andperhaps unknowable, is the inner turmoil that lingers within thechildʼs heartandmind.

Told through a sensitive yet powerful narrative, the music video blends emotional storytelling witha subtle visual depth that aims to inspire hope among survivors and foster empathy among viewers. It stands as one of the boldest and rarest themes ever explored in the Konkani music world.

The soulful vocals and heartfelt direction by Nithin Kootungal bring authenticity and emotion to every frame. The brilliant cinematography by Vipin Venugopal enhances the filmʼs visual mood, while the masterful music arrangement by Roshan DʼSouza Angelore adds emotional depth and atmosphere. The audio recording, mixing, and mastering, meticulously handled by NithinKootungal atOrpheus Studio Designs, Ernakulam, ensure a rich and immersive listening experience. Our obsession with brands, oh what a scam

They get you hooked, with logos and price tags

And then sit back and watch the fun, as their cash registers scream

You're working for them, walking billboards on legs

They make you an offer you cannot resist, and the traps set Few stand apart, but of little consequence, to the collective

They hold the masses in their sway, knocking down resistance

Paying your favourite heroes to sell it on screens So feel the pain, eat the dirty, break the chains and rise again

Our obsession with brands, as we scan the supermarket shelves

The one that rings the loudest in your digital memory

That's the one you'll gravitate towards, believing in the con The herd mentality, scream it long enough, and you've got it made

They make you believe, you're the one in control of your choices

Serving them on a platter, makes it too easy to resist

Why bother validating the fine print, you're tired and just skip It's so much easier and less time consuming
