There are indeed numerous adjectives and phrases to describe Dr Austin Prabhu! All of them appropriate and deserving for this multi-faceted, extraordinary personality! As I write my tribute, celebrating Austin’s platinum jubilee–Iwouldliketofocusonjust one dimension of this wonderful person: Austinislion-hearted
Being‘lion-hearted’isanexpression that signifies bravery, courage, and strength. It means that a person possesses exceptional qualities typically associated with lions, such asfearlessnessinthefaceofdanger, determination, and a strong will. This phrase is often used to
commend someone for their boldness or to inspire others to act with similar courage. It can apply in various contexts, from personal challenges to leadership in difficult situations. Great leaders have always been lion-hearted. It is also used for persons who have a ‘big’ heart, who are generous, selfless in their service, who can give and do not count the cost. Austin epitomisesallthisandmore!
Early in February 2019, I was invited by the Centre for Peacemaking of the Marquette University (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) to be their Ignatian Peacemaking Lecturer on Campus during their Mission Week. That January-February, a severecold wave caused by a weakenedjet streamaround the Arcticpolar vortex hit theMidwestern United States , killing several people. It came after awinter stormbrought up to 13 inches (33 cm) of snow in some regionsfromJanuary27–29,andthe
coldest temperatures in over 20 years to most locations in the affected region, including some alltime record lows. I wrote to Austin thatIwouldbearrivinginChicago’s O’HareAirporton31January.There was an immediate warm and welcome, inmymailboxfromAustin sayingthathewouldbethereand wouldevendrivemetoMilwaukee!
In normal times, the drive from Chicago to Milwaukee (more than 100kms),isalmosttwohours.Ihave done that trip a few times in the past. But that 31 January was an
extraordinaryday, inanabominable season with such terrible weather –that any ‘average’ human being wouldprefertosnuggleunderapile ofblanketsafteraheavymealanda hotdrink!Butlion-heartedAustinis made of sterner stuff. He brought me a heavy snack, gave me a sizzling cup of coffee to gulp down andwell, inamatteroftimewewere ontheroadtoWisconsin.Itwasnot aneasydrive, theroadswereicyand therefore slippery, it was wet everywhere, intermittentlywithrain, sleetandsnow–andofcoursethere were piles of snow everywhere! Austin was not deterred; he drove through all the seemingly insurmountable difficulties and in about three hours’ time we reached the Jesuit Residence in Milwaukee! The significant thing is that Austin droves back home to Chicago after droppingme!
After a fortnight, he came back to Milwaukee to pick me bring me to Loyola University where I had some engagements, and a couple of days later to reach me to the airport. If it wasa‘one-off’deed,Imaynothave highlightedit.Butthischaracteristic of ‘going-out of –one’s-way’ is
typical Austin. The stuff of a true leader: someone lion-hearted. I have personally experienced this quality on several different occasions, overtheyearsandIknow that many others have also experiencedthis!
My first encounter with Austin and family was in 2003.In the wake of the Gujarat Carnage of 2003, I was invited by civil society groups, to speakatpublicmeetingsinChicago and several other cities across the United States. Austin and family werepresentattheChicagoevent –there were many Muslims, some HindusandveryfewChristians.Iam sharing this fact, because a truly lion-hearted personisinclusive, can reach out to others, makes friends thattranscendsthenarrowconfines of one’s religion, ethnicity, nationality. He can build bridges that unite and not walls that divide! ThatisAustinto thecore – andthat iswhatendearshimtoothers! Yes,fromthatfirsttimeImetAustin and his wonderful wife Terry and their four children Anita, Anil, Atina andAngel–Irealisedthattheywere always a special family! Plenty of
bonding among themselves and with the larger family, relatives and friends, colleagues and collaborators. The glue that makes allthishappenisAustin!Thereisno doubt about that! In his own amiable and inimitable style, he will organise an event, bring everyone together, plan things out meticulously and above all, give everyone present a sense of belonging! I have had the joy of sharing meals with the family –where Austin lays the table, serves the delicious cuisine, he has personally prepared and after everyone has had their fill, Austin is the main clearer- cleanerdishwasher! The lion is king only if one is lion-hearted! That is servantleadership!
Austin has been a Lion most of his life!Inthisgreatorganisationhehas achieved the highest positions and responsibilities locally, nationally and internationally. He has Lion friends across the globe! For his unwavering commitment to the loftyidealsandspiritof Lionism, for his indefatigable efforts to serve others, for his unstinted acts of philanthropy, Austin has been
recognisedanawardedmanytimes. In fact, too numerous to count! He has even a road named after him –some honour indeed! Austin’s lionheartedness makes him a true Lion!
Aboveall,Austinisacommunicator par excellence! Lion-hearted persons are great communicators! Austin listens with his heart and when he speaks-words of wisdom flow. He is a great public speaker
who can hold audiences spellbound! He is passionate about ‘Konkani’ -makingrelentlessefforts to popularise it everywhere. He has been editing and publishing with professional regularity and dedication his e-Magazine ‘Veez Konkani Illustrated Weekly’ with readers all over the world. In keeping with the times, he is also a social media buff. A lion-hearted communicator – reads, understands and responds to the signs of the times!ThatisAustin! Thereismuchmoretobesaidabout lion-hearted Austin. A fitting conclusiontothistributetohimare the immortal words from the 1965 ‘Manof La Mancha’

A voice is heard from heaven’s bower, loud and clear, saying, “This is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased” Mt17:5. Felicitating Dr AustinPrabhuontheoccasionofhis Platinum birthday, we hear the echoesofthesewordsoftheGospel proclaimed on August 6th, when we celebrate the feast of the Transfiguration of Jesus;onceagain today, on August 8th, the day God the creator sent forth this treasure into our world, way back in 1950 through the choice of his noble parentsGaulbertD’SouzaandRose D’ Souza in Mangalore, known as the ‘Rome of the East”, a surprise gift wrapped in many layers of lovely qualities to celebrate and to cherish. This ‘Monglurcho kunvor’ wasdestinedtobloomandblossom in the American soil. The creator is taking delight in this masterpiece who is turned out to be a genius, a slender prodigy of 5’5’’ height,
weighing just 53.52 kgs but has a heart large enough to embrace the wounded humanity on the wayside oflife, whoturntohimintheirneed!
TheLORD had said to Abraham, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.”
“I willmake you intoa greatnation, andIwillblessyou; Iwillmake your namegreat, andyouwillbeablessing. Iwillblessthose whoblessyou, andwhoevercursesyouIwill curse; andallpeoplesonearth will be blessed through you.”
Likewise young Austin had to set out from Mangalore to the land of America, along with his bride Terry, after their wedding on October 25, 1980, and God has blessed his descendants in Anita-Randy, Anil-
Janki, Atina-Ashish and AngelJames and the lovely cherubs Leo, Avery, Vera and Lily, the grandchildren. Though Chicago became his ‘promised land’, where he rose to the zenith of glory, as a literary laureate, Lions Club President and through his humanitarianworks, hisheartwould always beat for his motherland India. His yeoman services for the promotion of Indian culture and Konkani language went on unabatedandrelentless, atwhichhe invests large crunch of his time, energy and talent and even his financialresources, overthepast 45 yearsofhissojourninaforeignland whichhasbecomehishomeland!
LOVE,PEACE,CAREANDSHAREis DrAustin’smotto andonthesefour pillarshisentirelifeisbuiltandgets richly reflected. Among the twelvefold fruits of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, forbearance, gentleness, faith, courtesy, temperateness and purity, LOVE which is supreme, outshines through him from the very early years of his life. He has excelled in imitating Jesus his master, whoforgavefromthecross,
his enemies who crucified him. It takes courage to forgive one’s enemies and much tougher to “…to love your enemies and to do good to those who hate you” Mt 5:44. Dr Austin has inherited the blessedness, promised by Jesus in his sermon on the mount, by practising this sacrificial love even when he was a youth,“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and drag you to the court and say all kinds of evil against you because of me...” Mt 5:11. His capacity to maintain PEACE, against all odds, amidst jealousies and rivalries, especially when he was at the helm of affairs astheFounderSecretaryofKonkani Bhasha Mandal, as the President of Mangalore Diocesan ICYM for six consecutiveterms, andastheeditor of four Konkani magazines simultaneously, and many other leadership roles and positions that made him shine, winning laurels for him. To CARE and to SHARE is his forte and numerous testimonies of his kindness and generosity, remain hidden and stand mute witness to this nature which he must have inheritedfromhisparents.DrAustin never thinks of himself, neither
interested to spend on himself nor desires to make profit but is always other centred. Surprisingly even the ‘Veez Konkani’ weekly that he has brought out relentlessly, touching 417th issueuninterrupted, iswithout seeking any profit on advertisements but instead investing and spending from his own resources! Coupled with his intuition which is sharp and attentive to reach out to the needy, he falls in line with what Jesus says, “Give to the one who asks you, and donotturn away from theonewho wants to borrow from you” Mt 5:42. At the portals of platinum jubilee celebrations all who have been blessed by his ‘dollars’ as charity and benevolence, will celebrate this exceptional gift, God has bestowed unto His universal Church. The Holy Spirit will delight in this charismatic personality, raretofind, asinhimwe can unravel the camouflage of all thetwelvefoldfruitsoftheSpiritand the secret is that in maintaining purity in life, he does not take alcoholevenatsocialgatherings!
Moreover the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit too find marvellous expression in Dr Austin. The Mangaloreans will ever cherish the
memories of his daring spirit and fortitude in leading with heroism the protest march in the heart of Mangalore City against the Anti Religion Bill ‘Tyagi Masoode’ in 1978, just at the age of 28, as the leader of Diocesan Youth Movement. Soon thereafter like Abrahamhesethisfacetowardsthe Americancontinentonbeingunited in matrimonial bond and then on, the loss of the motherland became the gain of the US, where from the zenith of glory through the offices he held in Lions Club International and many awards conferred on him tohiscredit,‘ThegloryofGodisthe man fully alive’ (St Ireneus) was manifested. Yet his heart is set on promoting Mangalorean culture andKonkanilanguagewhichhehas nurtured with great care and has received Presidential award too in recognition.
“The joy of the Lord is my strength” Nehemiah 8:10. Those who are acquainted with Dr Austin have tasted this joy and laughter, for the one who gets into a conversation with him can drink in with delight from his rich sense of wit and humour which provides elixir of life. That is the reason perhaps he was
often chosen for comedian’s role at dramasinhisyouthfulyearswhilein Mangalore.Hiscapacitytobringjoy into others’ lives is unparalleled, no matter what the pain within him mightbe, andindeeditisararegift.
Happy Platinum Jubilee Dr Austin Prabhu! On this splendid occasion ofcelebratingthebeautiful75years of your life, using the words of St Paul “I thank my God, every time I rememberyou. Inallmyprayersfor you, I always praywith joybecause
of your partnership in the gospel… being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you, will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus…Andthisismyprayerforyou: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness… - to the glory and praise of God”Phil 1:3-11.

He dared to be different, he dared to chart his own path
Following the norm, was not in his stars to be A small-town boy, dared to step into his own
Wearing his heritage as a badge of honour, on his chest
Here was a cub, born to roar and increase this tribe
His accomplishments too many to name, would shame aspiring youth
Today he holds more honour, than his wall can frame
With a unrelenting spirit, he challenges all conventions
He dared to be different, he dared to chart his own path
Following the clock was not for him, as his days miraculously extended
How else can one explain his innumerable feats accomplished
Most people fail to achieve in multiple lifetimes together
Here's to a unique, illustrious, multifaceted gentleman
Still growing, still aspiring, still seeking to reach out
Age is just a number of years, he's given of himself
Today Is just another day on his calendar of possibilities
- Ms. Molly Pinto.
In the kaleidoscopic tapestry of my youth, amidst the idyllic charms of Bendore parish, there loomed an extraordinary figure a young man whose aura magnetised the admiration of an entire generation. A man of such manifold talents and dignified bearing that he was, to all of us, not merely a hero, but the epitomeofwhatayoungmancould and ought to be. His name, even today, evokes reverence, admiration, and a wistful sigh among those who were fortunate enough to have basked in the incandescenceof hispersona.
He was, in the fullest sense of the term, a well accomplished person. An orator of enviable eloquence, a thespian who commanded the stage with effortless grace, a mellifluoussingerwhostirredsouls, andawriterwhosependancedwith poetic elegance. A teetotaller in a time when moderation was often mistaken for maturity, he wore his sobriety like a badge of honour notoutofself-righteousness,butas
a quiet rebellion against societal norms that oft compromised principlesforpopularity.
He was not just admired, he was emulated.TheyouthofourBendore parish gravitated towards him with the magnetic pull of admiration wrapped in aspiration. His words could galvanise even the most indifferent, his presence had the power to ignite dormant ambitions, and his very life served as a
curriculum in integrity, discipline, andcharisma.
I had the singular privilege of knowinghimnotmerelyasadistant beacon but as a friend and mentor. We both belonged to the culturally vibrant parish of Bendore, a communityknownforitsflourishing artistic spirit and fierce intellectual fervour. It was here, in the hallowed walls of our church halls and the humble stages of our community theatres, that our paths frequently intertwined.
Together, we acted in numerous Konkani dramas—those heartwarming, tear-jerking, laughter-inducing pieces of cultural legacy that spoke directly to the soul of Mangalore. He, the seasoned actor with the golden voiceandeffortlessstagecraft;I,the earnest apprentice stumbling my way through the complexities of Konkanilanguage. When he was the President of DiocesanCatholicYouthMovement and I the Secretary, we had worked together in many projects and
programs. My Konkani writing skills were, I confess with no false modesty, rudimentary at best. He penned speeches for me, crafted dialoguesthatsparkledwithwitand nuance, and whispered encouragements that built my confidence line by line.
He was, in every respect, the architect of many young dreams in our community. His protégés were many boys and girls who looked uptohimnotjustforwhathecould do, but for what he was. He had the raregift of makingeachpersonfeel seen, heardandimportant.Whether it was a timid teenager struggling with stage fright, or a young writer unsureofhisvoice, hehadthebalm, the words, and the wisdom to draw the best out of them.
And then, like all good things that are destined to evolve into greater chapters, he sought greener pastures. The day he left the shores of Mangalore for the faraway promise of the United States remains etched in our memory. His absence created an unmistakable void—one not just of presence, but
of purpose, for the youth of our parish.
In the years that followed, Bendore Parish was never quite the same. The stage lights still flickered, the microphones still echoed, the dramas still unfolded but something vital, something electric, wasmissing.Thatindomitablespirit of excellence wrapped in humility, thetwinkleintheeyethatsaid, You can do this too,” the baritone that urged us to be not just performers but paragons—was gone.
Yet, it would be an error to say he was forgotten. On the contrary, his legacy lived on in the countless young men and women he mentored manyofwhomwenton to become leaders.
Tohim,Iofferthishumbletribute not just in words, but in grateful remembrance. He was not merely a friend, or a parishioner but a great mentor. I am waiting for an opportunity again to be his Co- star
in a konkani drama to be staged in BendoreorKonkaniNatak Sabha.
The world may know him by other titles now perhaps as a professional in a distant land, perhaps as a family man with new commitments but for us, he will always be the quintessential youth leader of Bendore Parish. Our hero. Ourinspiration. Ourfriend.

Family roots & early life:According to a well-known Mangalorean Genealogist, Dr Austin'sascendantsare of typical Konkani roots: A Family of Valencia Mangalore origin, the first recorded ancestor isPascal D'Souza, (born

The name of one of their sonsappears in the Rosario Cathedral marriage register, Gaspar born about 1885, who married Christine d/o Sebastian D'Souza & IsabellaLobo,onJan13,1913.They had 4 sons. Dr Austin Prabhu, even from young and youthful days in the 1970s in Mangalore, has been the focus of admiration unlimited. His hands-on involvement through a whole gamut of activities and contributions in whole cannot be presented in words. As the
president of Catholic Youth Movement, present ICYM, of the DioceseofMangalorefor6yearshe has played a leading and landmark role. He was a theatre artiste and drama writer and the Founder Secretary of the Konkani Bhasha Mandal (Regd), Karnataka. He was also the Secretary of the erstwhile Yuva Janata Party of Dakshina Kannada District. His talents along with his cronies on and off stage at Don Bosco Hall in the 70s is really a thrillingchapter. The protest he engineered was a runaway success like many of his rallies and activities. His book for youth ‘Adarsh Yuvazonn’ was truly inspiring. He has penned all his youthful knowledge in this one book. The Dynamic leader, actor and popular writer that Austin Prabhu was reflects even to this day. Dr Veerendra Hegde, Dharmadhikaari at Dharmasthala, recently too hailed the services of Austin through Lions International and presented with him ‘Abode of Dharma – Dharmasthala’ (Pictorial Information Book) and a memorial medal. His leadership is recognized all over the world and recently he

orsimplyAustinhasbeenourfamily friend for decades. Is this live wire turning 75? Hard to believe! But going by his date of birth records we must admit that he is touching the finishing line at 75th Milestone. What an eventful and roller-coaster ride his life has been! It feels overwhelming to recount and track his fabulous journey in 75 years. I know at least half his lifetime through reading about him and by word of mouth from my husband Harry (better known as H R Alva or
By:IvanSaldanha-Shet
just H. R.) and other common friends.
First direct contact was in the firstweekofJanuary1992througha letter by Austin, after my marriage to Harry (1st Jan 1992). Letter traveled all the way from Chicago which carried greetings and best wishes from Austin and familyWifeTeresa, kidsAnita,Anil&Atina, to the newlyweds. (Youngest child AngelwasbornaroundChristmasof 1992).Notonly a beautiful greeting card but also a detailed letter and a gifttoo.Afterthatwewouldreceive Austin's calls on our landline occasionallyand usualletterwriting continued.
FromthenonAustincontinued to write letters occasionally mentioning about his various activities in Chicago and some details about his family. Every year wereceiveChristmasgreetingcards without fail along with a family picture. Harry would reciprocate to his letters with same enthusiasm. Communication between the two has been in continuous mode. With the changing times and advancements in technology writing to each other has become more frequent through emails. Those who know Austin will also know the fact that he is quick to respond. Given the different time zones, oneissuretoreceiveAustin's reply within next 12 hours of the email.
Let me come back to the topic of family bonding and first meeting Austin'sfamilyinMangalore.Austin, Theresa with children Anita, Anil, Atina and Angel were in Mangalore in December 1999 for a special occasion apart from visiting extended family members and relatives. 200th Wilfy Nite was a Milestone event in the Konkani cultural world and in the life of
Legendary Konkani singer and composer Wilfy Rebimbus. A huge concert was organized in St Agnes Special School grounds in Bendur, Mangalore on Sunday, 19th December 1999. Austin took time off to grace the special occasion alongwithhisfamily.
I still remember the sensationaladdressmadebyAustin congratulating the unwavering efforts by Wilfy Rebimbus to continue his Musical journey battlingallodds.Itwasnottheusual congratulatory speech but was a truetestimonyto thefactthatWilfy Rebimbus made the impossible possible just by sheer dedication and commitment to music which was his passion. As icing on the cake, Austin concluded his address with a popular Wilfy song to thunderousapplausebythepacked audienceintheopenground. ThisspecialvisitforAustinand family became a special event for our familyas well.We were living in theAll-IndiaRadio(AIR)quarterson Kodikal road near Ashok Nagar Church.Austinhadpromisedtovisit us at the earliest through his letter beforetheirarrivalandremembered
his promise. Very next day of the 200th Wilfy Nite concert, ie, 20th December evening Austin and family visited our humble shelter. Though his children were bigger in age to my kids, they smiled, shook hands and settled down comfortably in no time. Instantly it appeared that we had known them long before this visit. And so was Teresa, Austin's wife; sweet and humble, never had any air about herself despite being well placed in the US. 20th December 1999 remains a special day in our memory. Our children were treated with chocolates and Christmas gifts - soft toys with Christmas themesSanta Claus, Teddy bear, Bunny rabbit, Mickey mouse- which are cherished even today. Santa Claus posters and other toys come out of showcase for display during Christmas every year. We keep talking about Austin family's 1999 visiteventothisdate.AndTeresaor Terry in short gifted me a 3 layered neckpiece which is cherished and very much in use even after quarter of a century. After they returned to the US, Austin wrote a long letter making a special mention of their
visit to us and how much his childrentalkaboutthat.
Something more about this visitwhichneedsspecialmention. In 1970s Austin, the unimitable youth leader, was very actively involved in Journalism, cultural and literary matters. When All India Radio Mangalore station was started on 11 December 1976, he was one among other activists who had demanded more time for the broadcast of Konkani language programmes. He not only demanded more programmes but also presented talks, stories, skits etc and encouraged youth and
other age group people to participate. He wrote skits, rehearsed with groups and presentedteam eventsinKonkani.
I was aware of Austin’s contributions to Radio. Hence, I invitedhimtoAkashvaniMangalore station. He made it immediately after Christmas and I had the honor ofinterviewinghimforthefirsttime on radio. In that interview he recounted his memories of various programmes he presented in individual capacity and with teams ofyouthandthe'dharna'infrontof Akashvani gate demanding more time for local language broadcast. Early broadcasters of those years, someofthemstudents, whoutilized thisopportunitywentontobecome goodwritersandorators, headded.
Then on he started sending emails both to Harry and to me on matters interesting to us. And he
made several visits to India and Mangaloreinlast
25 years sometimes alone, sometimes with wife. Once daughter Atina also accompanied them for a special occasion in the extended family. There was a memorable event in 2009 that deservesspecial mention.
"Vozram" a collection of Austin's 3500 short poems in Konkani was published by Mariads Prakashan, sister concern of Maria Advertisers owned by H R Alva. This is to celebrate the 60th year of Austin D'Souza Prabhu in a memorable way. Harry took up the responsibility of soliciting, editing andarrangingpoemsinorderunder various topics and titles, prepared a draftcopytobeprintedatPrintania Offset Pvt. Ltd, Matunga (E)
Mumbai. I proofread several times, overtwo-threemonthsofthehuge book which contained over 360 pages.Thatwas anexperience.
And for the long-awaited big event finally the auspicious dayShubha muhurat- was finalised as 29th December 2009. Austin, Terry and daughter Atina had arrived in advance to Mangalore. For us tooit was much awaited event. 'Vozram' was released in the Auditorium of Hotel Deepa Comforts, M G Road, Kodialbail, Mangalore by Albert W. D’Souza,ProprietorofPrintaniaand Managing Director of Aldel EducationTrust along with his wife Elvina D'Souza, secretary of Aldel Education Trust. Vishwa Konkani sardar Basti Vaman Shenoy was the Chief guest.
Austin made another trip in December 2010. This special purpose visit was to attend the
Silver Jubilee of Mandd Sobhann. The 25 daylong celebrations involved severaleventsrelated to Konkani culture, language, literature and folklore. Celebration of the jubilee was graced by many eminent personalities from world over, andfromdifferentpartsofthe country including Her Excellency Pratibha Devi Singh Patil, President ofIndia,politicalleadersL.K.Advani, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, central and state ministersandmanyothers.
Again, there was a book release function published by Mariads Prakashan. This time it was a collection of short stories "Sathem" (ಸಾತೆಂ means umbrella) in Konkani by Catherine Rodrigues of Katapadi, Udupi district. She is a prolific writer in 3 languagesKonkani, Tuluand Kannadafor over
3 decades. But her Konkani book was not published until then. With Mariads Prakashan taking the lead topublishCatherine'sKonkanibook and Albert W D'Souza of Printania Offset Pvt Ltd willing to print in Mumbai, Catherine's dream of a Konkani book in print got realized on 19th December 2010. Sathem was released in Katapadi, Catherine's hometown. Albert W. D'Souza released the book in the presence of Catherine's readers, well-wishers, relatives and friends whohadgatheredinlargenumbers.
Austin was the Chief guest. Walter D'Souza Nandalike, CEO of Daijiworld Media Network and many other eminent people were present to witness the release of Catherine'smaidenKonkanibook.
Austin made few more trips following 2010. Each trip was memorable. He made it a point to spend time with us. Together we travelled to visit our relatives and common friends far and near Mangalore to Kundapur, to Karkal andtoBelthangadiandbeyondwith Harryeverwillingtobeatthewheel. Every trip ensured great company withgoodsenseofhumorandtime pass. Serious topics surfaced in between. Truly such road trips were enriching, and I would look forward to the next one. Austin was so considerate that whenever he came home, he would insist that after longandtiringdayatofficeIshould notspendmuchtimeinthekitchen. He was offering to eat in nearby restaurants or order door delivery. I like to feed home cooked food, but his concern humbles me. On his insistence we explored some good eateries in Mangalore like Girimanja, Machalee, the Village pub, Pabbas ice-cream, etc. In 2018 visit Austin spent a lot of time visiting people and places, attending functions. Celebrating 100th issue of Veez Konkani where he insisted that I go on stage along withHarryandIhadtooblige.

H is for humbleness. Having the ability to help others without needing credit and helping someone because you can and not becauseyou must.
E is for energy. Going to meetings and fundraisers that run late into the night and still getting up at 5am for work and doing it all withasmile.
R is for rare. Possessing qualities that distinguish you from therestandmakeyouunique.
O is for open. Sending off a vibethatmakesyoumoreappealing and significantly more approachable.
Those four qualities may spell HERO, but to me they spell out my DAD,Austin D’Souza.

Humbleness. My dad is one of the humblest people I know. He is constantly helping someone. As an extremely active member of the Lions Club, he helps blind and deaf people with any chance he gets. He does not limit his outreach to just the blind and deaf though. My dad is always there to lend a helping hand to anyone who may need it, but my favorite part of this characteristicof his, isthathe never needs any recognition. He does not care if he gets an award. In theend, all that matters to him is that he

Energy. My dad makes the squirrel from the movie Over the Hedge look like a sloth. It amazes mehowhecanstayawakewithsuch ahectic schedule.I willnever forget this one time when my dad drove my family to Canada. We got back to Chicago at 5am and my dad was at his desk at work by 6am. He has no limits, and he can keep up with all his activities while wearing a continuoussmile onhisface.

Open. If you ever need someonetotalkto, makeyoulaugh, or help you out, go to my dad. He can do pretty much anything. I like to think of him as my own personal superhero. He is very sociable and soeasytotalktothatanyoneopens to him. He makes friends no matter where he goes. That reminds me of this one time in 2005, my family travelled to China. We were
Rare. My dad is a cross between Gandhi and Charlie Chaplin. It is a very rare combination. The Gandhi aspect shows that my dad is about peace, he is Indian, and he has an accent. I do not mind that he does not get it though, because it is his effort that means the world to me. I know how much he cares for me and for others and that is what makes him my hero. I know this sounds cheesy, but I truly believe that if I can be 5% of what he is, I will know I have accomplished a lot. I am happy to have Austin D’Souza as my father, but I am even happier to have him asmyhero.

From all eternity God had thought of Austin and me to be united in matrimonial bond and we were married on October 25, 1980. Our lifehasbeennothingbutafairytale ever since we met on October 20, 1980. Havingmet, seeneachother and being married in just 5 days. Never in my wildest dreams, having lived in the United States for 10 years, had I found myself that I would succumb to what I consider tobeanarrangedmarriage.
From the memoirs of his younger days (as told to me) in Mangalore
especially at the helm of affairs as the President of CYM, Mangalore Diocese for 6 consecutive terms, he shinesoutbrilliant!
And from the time he has set foot on American soil on September 26, 1981,IhavenoticedDrAustintobe multifaceted in his humanitarian endeavors. “Give and you will receive” “Give until it hurts” has alwaysbeenhismotto, sharingwhat he has with the needy who find accessibility to his storehouse of blessings. Hehasreceivedrequests for help from across the globe and as far as I know, they are not gone unansweredandmostlyinapositive response in generosity and openhandedness.
His specialty is to give bountifully for which he has received bountifully. We will be celebrating our 45 years of marriage and have been blessed with 4 wonderful children - 3 daughters, Anita, Atina and Angel and a son Anil. We have
also been blessed with 5 grandchildren - 3 girls and 1 boy and 1 boy is on the way this year in September2025.
A portion of Dunlop Avenue is now named“Dr.AustinPrabhuWay,”in honor of the Forest Park resident who has received a Lifetime Community Service Award for his numerous community and humanitarian activities, from President George W. On the day Mayor Anthony Calderone unveiled the new street sign on May 26, 2018, he said “If everyone had just a part of Austin D’Souza in them, the world would be a better place!” Dan O’Reilly, former mayor of Stickney and past Lion’s Club International Director,
said, “I’ve served with Austin on the Lion’s Club district cabinet for 24 years. He’s well deserving of having a street named after him.”
Responding to the honour bestowedonhimmyhusbandjoked saying “I never thought that before having my name on a stone in the cemetery I’d have my name on a street sign,” adding: “I was born outsidethiscountry, withadifferent language and my skin is brown, but this sign is a recognition of how I live. It makes me think that when you do good, people will recognize you.”
My husband has been a pioneer in making Forest Park the diverse community it is today. When we
arrived in Forest Park in 1981, travelling from Mangalore, India, one of our neighbors immediately screamed, “There goes the neighborhood.AMexicanismoving in.” My husband calmly responded by treating our neighbor as he wanted to be treated and the two arefriendstoday.
His copious contributions, daring ventures, personal triumphs and unparalleled achievements are too vast to list in a few pages. His life has been focused on civicmindedness and dedication to humanitarian works and has been for more than half his life to Lionism. Serving at the Club, District, State and International levels, Lion Austin has always believed in serving the less fortunate and this has been his drivingforce. Austinwasawardeda Lifetime Achievement Award for Community Service by President George W. My husband’s greatest accomplishment was starting the VisionFirstProgram with the Lions Club in Chicago. Vision First provided glasses to 85,000+ children enrolled in the Chicago

I travelled thousands of miles, across the oceans, stepping into a newcountrywithmuchanticipation andexcitementofmeetingthelarge extended family of my husband. Among them, there was one I was particularly eager to meet - Austin. His name, his fame, and his insightful articles in Raknno, Mithr, Jhelo, Kannik, and other esteemed Konkani publications had already painted a picture of a remarkable individualinmy mind.
Meeting Austin in person was a revelation. He was much simpler than I had imagined down-toearth,humble,andincrediblywarm. His simplicity and quirky jokes instantly won my heart, and in no time, he became the older brother I neverhad.
Over the years, as I got to know Austin more closely, I discovered the depth of his character. His open invitation to the Chicago land community to celebrate Monti Fest, which blossomed into a two-decade-old tradition in Chicago, is a shining example of his visionary ideas and his unwavering belief in the power ofcommunity.
Despitehisstrongexterior,Austinis a soft-hearted person. When he is hurt, he doesn't show it; instead, he puts on a brave face and moves forward with grace. His love for Konkani, the Lions Club, and his familyisboundlessandunwavering.

Aswecelebratearareandbeautiful milestone-75remarkableyears-in thelifeofDrAustinD’SouzaPrabhu, we honour not just the number of years, but the depth of a life lived with purpose, passion, and an unwaveringcommitmenttoculture, community, andservice.
I had the privilege of working with him during the golden era of the youth movement in Mangalore in the 1970s. Even in those formative years, his brilliance was unmistakable. A charismatic leader, a sharp thinker, and a selfless trailblazer, he inspired us with both hisactionsandideals.Butaboveall, he was a thorough gentlemankind, helpful, and endlessly encouraging.
He never seemed to learn the word no. He always found time to help others, constantly nudging us - his friends and the youth - towards nurturingourtalents, beitindrama, singing, public speaking, or leadership. I personally benefited from his guidance; he helped me craft powerful speeches that enabled me to shine in elocution competitions.

As editor of four Konkani journals, he gave voice to a language that is asrichasitisdelicate.Througheach editorial, article, and initiative, he preserved the soul of Konkani, handing it down to future generationswithcareandcreativity.
As a rare theatre artist of talent, he broughtstoriestolifeonstagewith passion and poignancy. His portrayal of Jesus’s suffering and crucifixion remains etched in memory -an unforgettable performance. Whether delivering a monologue or holding an audience with a moment of silence, his presencecommandedattention.
Today, in Chicago, Illinois, where he has made his second home, he continues to shine. As a stalwart of the Lions Club, his tireless community service has been so impactful that the city honoured himina trulyspecialway -street

And yet, he has never forgotten his roots. His love for Konkani has only deepened. In Chicago, he brought together the Konkani-speaking diaspora, creating a warm and vibrant cultural haven where languageandidentityflourish.
Whenever I visited my daughter in Chicago, I had the golden opportunity to meet Austin Prabhu - who, even after so many years away from India, had not changed one bit. He remained as humble, approachable, and passionate about our culture and Konkani as ever.
He invited me to the Monthi Festh celebrated by the Chicago Konkani community, a grand celebration that turned out to be! I was also honoured to be invited to his son’s wedding. His son marrieda Gujarati girl, and the wedding, Roce, and Mehndi celebrations were a joyful and seamless blend of Konkani and Gujarati cultures. I even had the privilege of leading the Voviyos sungduringthe Roceceremony.
Through it all, I found that Austin was the same yesterday, today, and I’m sure, for all the daysto come.
HisdedicationtotheKonkanicause has earned him numerous laurels and honours. And now, embracing both tradition and technology, he runs the Konkani e-journal Veez - a platform that informs, inspires, and unites Konkani lovers across the world.

I will forever remain grateful to Dr Austinforbeingthebridgebetween my past and the world’s awareness. He did not just document my story; he dignified it. He celebrated the strength of a survivor, and in doing so, he educated the masses, encouraged the broken, and empoweredcommunities.
Behind Dr Austin Prabhu’s journalistic brilliance is a humble, generous, and joyful soul who finds peace in preparing mouth-watering Mangalorean meals for his friends. Ask anyone in Chicago who has tastedhishome-cookeddishes,and they will smile and say, “He feeds not just your stomach, but your soul.” His kitchen is not just a place of food; it is a sanctuary of connectionand compassion.

Not long ago, Dr Austin alerted me about a woman with two young daughters who had recently moved to the U.S. from India for an authentic job opportunity. Though their migration was legal, their situation was fragile. New to the country, unfamiliar with the systems, and lacking basic household needs, they were at risk. Without hesitation, I loaded my car with pots, pans, pressure cookers, crockery, umbrellas, kitchen essentials, ironing boards, and more, deliveringhopeintheformof household items to help them start
their American dream with dignity. Thissmallactofkindnesswasmade possible through the alertness and humanityofDrAustin.
His vigilance has also helped us track and prevent trafficking cases. He has shared real-time, credible leads of young girls trafficked from India to America under false promises, often lured by deceptive employment offers in exchange for huge sums of money. Through Dr Austin’s proactive approach, these networks have been disrupted, and survivors have been shielded from horror. A Messenger of Hope and Education
Dr Austin is not someone who merely highlights problems; he champions solutions. His daily mantraissimpleyetprofound:

He makes the uncomfortable conversations comfortable, and he opens minds with logic and hearts with love. His journalism is a tool for justice, and hisleadershipislacedwithhumility.
