Convention even better and one that all will not want to miss.
It’s hard to believe that this Lions year is almost over. It seems like just yesterday we were in Las Vegas going through DGE School and making things official at the Ribbon Pulling Ceremony. This Rollercoaster ride is coming to an end but not without many accomplishments along the way. We are still less than 100 members down in net growth for the year. This is an amazing accomplishment and I want to thank our team of District Governors and their teams for making this happen. We are not finished yet though. I believe we can step up to PID Jerome Thompson’s Challenge to turn it up a few degrees so that we can better serve our communities. We just finished up one of the most successful State Conventions in many years. The energy at the Abraham Lincoln Hotel and Convention Center in Springfield was electric from the opening dinner with our visiting guests, PIP Lion Joe Preston and he lovely wife Lion Joni Preston, to the final bell on Sunday. A huge thank you goes out to convention chair Lion Gail Anton and her husband PCC Steve and their awesome team. They all worked hard to make sure it was the best. We would love to hear your comments though. Go to our website www.illinoislionsmd1.org and click on the link in the banner at the top of the page to take a quick online survey. We want your thoughts on how we could make the 100th MD-1 State 2

There are a ton of people I would like to thank for helping make this year the success that it was. First, my Council of Governors, I knew the day we met as 2nds we were going to have something special. President Gudrun stated in her bio video that Challenges Create Opportunities, you all stepped up to the challenges at hand and have now created more opportunities for the Lions of Illinois to grow and prosper and serve more people in their communities. PID Bud and Lion Jama Wahl, you are amazing people. Thank you for being my sounding board at times and giving me the encouragement to keep pressing forward even in the incredibly tough times. You have seriously contributed to me being the leader that I am today. I couldn’t have had a more perfect Partner in Service. Thank you, mom, for all that you did and put up with through this journey. You were adopted by nearly everyone in the State. Thank you for being so awesome and there for me. And finally, thank you Lions of 1-M for seeing something in me to elect me to serve as your District Governor. Your support through all of this has been amazing. I know that there are several more and I could probably go on and on, but Lion Austin needs room to put the rest of the great things our Lions of Illinois are doing. So, I leave you with this. Keep doing what you do and living up to our motto WE SERVE. There are millions of people out there counting on us to be there for them. Make sure you support all of the Lions of this great Multiple District and beyond. We are all in this together and with our efforts we can make the world a better place to live. Thank you again for allowing me to serve as your Council Chair for the 2018-2019 Council of Governors. I bid you all farewell and wish the
2019-2020 Council of Governors the best of luck in the coming year.

Let’s meet in Italy! MD1 Leadership Chair: Lion Jama Wahl
Dear Lions: This year’s International Convention will be in Milan, Italy. We just have one month, and it will be history. We will be electing our new International President Dr. Jung-Yul Choi for the year, 2019-2020, Judge Haynes H. Townsend for I Vice President, Brian Sheehan as II Vice President and several International Director from all over the world, amongst them we have our own PDG Bob Block to be elected as the new International Director from Multiple District 1. I am pretty sure that it will happen; if not, it will be sure next year during our International Convention in Singapore. Good luck in Milan PDG Bob Block! We had a great convention in Springfield this year. Something new and something more enjoyable as Lions of MD1. It was a blast on Friday night. Those who didn’t attend the event, missed a lot! Now we have new Council Chair from District 1J, DGE Jerome Perez and his newly elected team of DGE’s and State Chairs. Once again DGE’s promised me that there will ne news and pictures from all Districts in MD1 and all State Chairs will communicate with their articles

By now your clubs should have begun preparing for the next Lions’ year. Club officers should have been elected with their names and contact information updated on MyLCI. This allows for information to be sent directly to club officers to be shared with club members. But what if you are an incoming club officer? Where do you go to find out what you are really supposed to do as club president, secretary, treasurer, membership chair or service chair? The first step would be to speak to your current club leaders. Have a transition meeting, discuss what went well this year and what might be changed for next year. Next, consider attending your district’s officer training. Many districts have time set aside to specifically train incoming leaders. Check with your Zone Chair or District Global Leadership Team Chair for details. Another option might be to participate in webinars offered by Lions Clubs International (LCI). If the incoming officer’s name and email are posted on MyLCI, the info about these webinars is emailed directly. The USA Canada Lions Leadership Forum’s Lions University has a
bachelor’s program that has webinars focused on club level leadership. Go to www.lionsforum.org and click on the Lions University tab. An electronic source of support are the E-Books developed by LCI. The links below provide current information on each of the club offices. The E-books can be downloaded or printed, your choice. Lions Clubs International has many resources to support clubs to be successful in providing service to their local communities and beyond the city limits to touch lives around the world. As preparations continue for a new year of leadership, why not check out these resources?

Apple River, Galena, Stockton and Warren Lions Clubs pooled together $1500 to assist a River Ridge student in the purchase of a hearing aid. A request for assistance in the purchase of a hearing aid from Kristy Wolter for her son, Riley, was received by the Warren Lions Club. The photo opportunity was the club's way of celebrating 50,000+ pill bottles (around 55,000) the club has processed and sent out so far. This was all done in collaboration with the help of folks in the community -- including retirement homes, libraries, banks, high school students, clubs, eyeglass outlets, etc., etc. These bottles are already de-labeled and cleaned when we pick them up. It started out innocently as the club's centennial project ... and continues because folks refuse to stop collecting. Glenview Lions' Help Revitalize Celebration of Arbor Day at District 30 Schools. The Glenview Lions Club is king, when it comes to helping local elementary schools learn about the importance of trees to the environment. On Arbor Day, April 26, for the sixth year-in-a-row, representatives from the Glenview Lions Club visited fourth graders at Wescott and Willowbrook Schools to share information about tree care and to distribute Norway spruce saplings to the students. The Glenview Lions' members were Terry and Rita Dooley, President Thomas Zanoni, and Secretary, James Martin.
Since the Glenview Lions have been visiting Wescott and Willowbrook, they have handed out over 800 trees since 2014. The saplings they provided were courtesy of the Fourth Grade Foresters USA, an organization which aims to revitalize the celebration of Arbor Day in schools. The group has distributed 750,000 saplings to fourth graders in over 7,100 schools across the country since 2006. The organization's current goal is to distribute a million trees by 2021. Mr. Dooley talked about how to plant and care for their saplings. He reminded the children, "In the era of global warming and air pollution, tree planting is even more important than ever. Norway Spruce saplings do not spread on their own but need to be planted to grow and prosper. Trees take carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere to help reduce warming and help clean the air we breathe. Planting trees is a simple, inexpensive, and easy way to address the problem." A Tree Grows in Northbrook. At Wescott School, there was a planting ceremony before the Glenview Lions' representatives handed out the Norway Spruce saplings to the kids. Wescott parent Tracey Becker brought her daughter Molly's two-foot tree which she received as a sapling in fourth grade three years ago. They decided to donate it to the Wescott grounds, next to the butterfly garden. Horticulture expert Rob Sulski (Foot Stone Inc.) with custodian Lucio Castrejon dug the hole for the tree. Students helped pat earth around it after it was inserted into the ground. Care of the tree was discussed, and many of the kids were excited to see how large a sapling could grow in just a few years. Those individuals who helped coordinate this activity included Assistant Superintendent Dr. Melissa Hirsch, Wescott Principal Dr. Chris Brown, Willowbrook Principal Dr. Scott Carlson, with fourth grade teachers Jane Eilhauer, Julie Molay, Jennifer Murnick, Jessica Schutz, Betsie Onsrud, Jennifer Lund, and Molly Shanahan. -------------------------------------------------------------------45
