From MD1 Council Chair: Greetings MD1 Lions! It is amazing how fast this Lion’s year has flown by. It won’t be long before we are in Las Vegas for LCICon. But first, let’s continue to enjoy our District conventions and look forward to the State Convention. The MD-1 Convention is always a good time, and this year the Council of Governors may give you some fun memories to take away with you. April 16th-22nd is Worldwide Service to Protect our Planet. This is our last chance to satisfy the “Protecting our Environment” Centennial Service Challenge. Don’t forget to report your service activities on myLCI.

Peace Poster Contest “The Future of Peace”. Zhuo is thirteen years old and from China. Her piece is amazing and touches base on so many facets of peace. We, also, extend congratulations to Lions Clubs International Essay winner, Eli Potter, from Delaware, USA. Soon the essay will be displayed on the LCI website for your viewing. The 2018-2019 “Kindness Matters” Peace Poster kits are now available from LCI club supplies (PPK-1) for US $11.95. This is a fun way to make your Lions Club more visible and gain members. Stop the Bleeding! Even though mother nature brings the showers to blossom April flower, for many of our clubs it has become dropping season. Any members didn’t pay their dues, they are gone by the wind and we call ourselves ours is a humanitarian association to help the needy and less fortunate! Do we ask our members those who didn’t pay their dues the reason why? Many of us don’t. May be some of our own members need finances and less fortunate. Isn’t it our duty to support them and take care of them? Don’t we know – charity begins at home? I think it is time to think of our own members those work hard for the success of Lions Motto – We Serve.

Young ChicagoArea Artist Honored for Her Vision of Peace

International 100 th annual Convention in Chicago this July. Every year, Lions clubs from around the world empower more than half a million children to express their visions of peace by sponsoring Peace Poster materials. The theme for this year’s contest was “A Celebration of Peace.” Ashley’s entry was made possible by the Bloomingdale Lions Club, which partnered with her school to provide the contest materials to students. Lions Clubs International’s 1.4 million members improve people’s lives in more than 200 countries and geographic areas by identifying and addressing local and global needs, which include engaging youth, relieving hunger, protecting the environment, saving sight, and much more. Twelve-year-old Ashley Zhang has been creating art since she was eight years old, but the Bloomingdale, IL native says it wasn’t until she entered her drawing in the 29 th annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest that she realized the kind of person she wanted to be. “I just pictured what peace was like to me,” Ashley told CBS 2 Chicago. On January 19, 2017, Chicago leaders in arts and youth outreach selected Ashley as one of 116 international Peace Poster Contest finalists from more than 600,000 young artists in 60 countries. Ashley’s Peace Poster is now being displayed in Loyola University’s Museum of Art alongside the entries from other finalists. The winner of the International Peace Poster Contest will be announced on March 4 at Lions Day with the United Nations—an annual gathering of Lions, dignitaries and lawmakers to discuss solutions to global humanitarian challenges—and honored at Lions Clubs 4

Posters advance through several judging levels: local, district, multiple district and international. Peace Poster Contest Awards International winners will be notified on or before February 1. • One international grand prize winner will receive US$5,000 and a trip to a special award ceremony.

There are three proposed amendments to our Constitution and By-Laws being presented to the delegates at our upcoming 2018 State Convention. Two of these proposed amendments were developed at the request of the Council of Governors and one came directly from the Constitution and ByLaws Committee. A brief summary of the proposed amendments is shown below as well as the amendments. These will also be printed in the regular March issue of our Lions of Illinois Magazine. Knollenberg, Chairperson MD-1 Constitution and By-Laws Chair Resolution # 1 - Ethics and Conduct: This proposed amendment would create a new Article III which would require all District Governors, the Council Chairperson and all State Chairpersons to read and sign the Ethical Standards and Conduct policy specific to their position. The Council of Governors recommends adoption of the amendment. The Constitution and By-Laws Committee is neutral on this proposed amendment Resolution # 2 – Recommendation Clarification: This proposed amendment to Article XIII, Section 2 of the MD-1 Constitution will clarify the definition of the term ‘recommendation’ as used in this Article of our Constitution. Both the Council of Governors and the Constitution and ByLaws Committee recommend adoption of this proposed amendment. Resolution # 3 – Teleconference Meetings: This proposed amendment to Article XI, Section 7 to the MD-1 Constitution will correct language pertaining to amending the Lions of Illinois Policy Manual. Both the Council of Governors and the Constitution and By-Laws Committee recommend adoption of this proposed amendment.

The Lions of Illinois along with Lions throughout the Midwest have been asked to help out and attend the celebration of the Special Olympics Unified Games that will be held at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Illinois. The games will be from July 15th through July 22nd, 2018. Around 800 athletes and coaches will be coming to Chicago from around the world. They will be housed at the Westin Hotel located on Michigan Avenue, downtown Chicago. During their time in Chicago, the athletes will be participating in a soccer tournament as well as enjoying the sights and sounds of Chicago. The Special Olympic Associations is looking to the Lions and Leos for their support of the games through the attendees at the events themselves, and also in volunteering to help in the variety of areas. The volunteerâ€™s commitment can vary in positions to as many days or hours that you would be willing to help out in this special event. Lions and Leos will be needed during the games - ball boy or girl and score keepers, as well as with the teams during their stay here in Chicago - Team Liaisons, hotel greeters & information and interpreters. There are 24 teams with approximately 30 members representing the different countries that have qualified to participate in this tournament. On Thursday, July 19, 2018, the Lions have been asked to have a Host Night for these special athletes and their coaches. The idea is to have our guests experience something other than the hotel while in 40

Chicago. They are looking at 4 to 6 venues that the teams would be divided between, to visit and enjoy the hospitality of Chicago. Clubs are being asked to serve as Hosts for this evening. The time and places are not totally determined as of now, but we are in search of clubs that would like to get involved as a host for the different venues. Our intent is to have Lions Clubs join with another one or two to help in hosting the athletes at one of the venues. The selection of the venue would have to be within 30 minutes of downtown Chicago and to be determined by the clubs that would be the host there. The transportation would be taken care of by the Special Olympics, but the cost of the event would be that of the host. The host would also receive a stipend from the Special Olympics for each team that was there. The event could be either in the afternoon or evening depending on the teams attending the event in respect to their tournament schedule. The hope is to have all athletes back to the hotel by 10:00 pm. The details of the menu would be determined by the Host Clubs. Any special needs for food would be coordinated by the Special Olympic Committee and the Host Clubs. Right now, we are looking to you to talk to your club and see if you would be interested in being a Host Club and adopt a venue. As more information becomes available, we would get back to you and let you know which teams will be coming to your venue, so you can start to communicate with them. It will be

a great event to host and experience the excitement these special athletes have for their sport. So please consider this great opportunity. The Lions Clubs International Convention in Las Vegas is less than five months away. The convention opens on Friday, June 29 at the MGM Grand Resort. The final plenary session along with the installation of your District Governor by our newly elected International President, Gudrun Yngvadottir from Gardabaer, Iceland (our First Woman President), will be Tuesday morning, July 3, 2018. The main venue is the MGM Grand Resort with the Illinois Delegation staying at the Luxor Hotel & Casino about 15 minutes away. There are shuttle buses running during the convention hours for the attendees for their convenience. The International parade will be on Saturday, June 30, 2018. The parade will step off at 8:30 am. The Council of Governors have secured a double decker bus for “some’ of the Illinois Delegation to ride in. We will still be in need of marchers to carry the Street Banners and Flags that we have traditionally used over the years. I will be looking to you to help on parade day so we can again display the Lions Pride for Illinois. The parade uniform will be the same as in the past years – dark or khaki long or 41

short pants, white polo shirt and the MD1 blue vest. I will have an order form for the polo shirts and vests available on the MD1 Web Site. As Lions are about tradition, so are the Illinois and the Hawaiian Lions. This year we will have a gettogether with the Hawaiian Lions at the International Convention. The event is scheduled for Sunday, July 1st at the Luxor Hotel & Casino following the close of the Opening Plenary Session. We have finalized the location - “Egyptian Ballrooms E-H” and the time is 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm. We are still talking with the Hawaiian Lions of either having an Ice Cream Social or Pizza Bar. Cost and menu will be finalized shortly. Please watch the MD1 Web Site for more details. Sorry, but by now you know you have missed the early registration fee for the 2018 International convention in Las Vegas. The fee is $200.00 per person along with a $200.00 guest room deposit. This registration fee is good till March 31, 2018. After April 1, 2018 and on site, the fee will be $225.00 per person. For children 17 and under the fee is $20.00 and for the Omega Leo it is $100.00. The deadline for advance registration is May 1, 2018. This is the same deadline to submit a refund request for registration, housing and/or ticket cancellation. You can register on line by going to LCI home site and click on LCICON. The Coal Valley Lions held a low vision screening at a day care center along with Governor Ray and some Orion Lions. They are handing out permission slips to the Bicentennial school, so they can take pictures of the students eyes. Lions Larry Anderson, left, Darrell Muehlman, Dave Shultz, Dave Tussell, John Carlon, Bill Womac, Beth Carlson and Cheryl Russell were all smiles at the Orion Lions soup supper which was held on Monday January 15. They made $771.10 with a matching grant from Modern Woodmen bringing their total proceeds to $1,542.20! They are going to make the soup supper an annual event to be held on Martin Luther King Day because (according to Lion Dave Shultz MJK was a huge fan of soup. He swears the last part is true because he read it on the internet.) --------------------------------------------------------------------

The Joliet Noon Lions Club joined up with the Joliet Public Library and the Joliet Park District to sponsor Free Little Libraries, which are spread throughout the city in some of the city’s parks.

The Channahon Lions Club have been approved for a grant which will allow the club to move one step closer to the purchase of equipment to perform free eye screenings for children. The club hopes to launch this new service at the Three Rivers Festival in Channahon which will take place on the Channahon Park District grounds Aug. 8 to 12.

A big District thank you to Lemont Lion Doug Wright and the ‘Fort Awesome Band’ for putting together a benefit for our District’s fundraising efforts for Pediatric Cancer Research. We raised $1,500. 48

Lion Charlie Niehaus is just one of the team involved with the Altamont Lions Club’s Pack-A-Sack program. A week after collecting donations from the community to support the local food pantry, Altamont Lions Club Basketball Program involved a high-energy schedule with 24 teams including about 200 area youth ages pre-k through 6th grade. Lions Higham and Wallace were recognized by the Sycamore Lions Club for their involvement in collecting funds for the foundation annually in September during Lions Candy Day Campaign and their work throughout the year in the Foundation’s Used Eyeglass Recycling Program.

Lions Tom and Sharon Foster received their 30 Year Chevrons from Sycamore Lion President Kevin Berry. Sharon and Tom joined their local Lions Club in the late 80’s and after relocating to Sycamore in 2002 transferred into the Sycamore Lions Club. They are both Melvin Jones Fellows through Lions International, Lion Tom is also a Lions of Illinois Foundation Fellow and has received District 1J’s Lazansky Award. been leading the team of specialized experts at the Center for Sight and Hearing since 2015. We were honored to have Maureen as our guest as she expounded on the diverse topics of sight, hearing, clinical, therapeutic support programs and services that positively impact the people they serve. There were discussions about environmental disabilities that people face in our southern part of Illinois. Along with her presentation she emphasized the importance of having the right resources for the problems individuals face in our Southern District. Comprehensive care enhancing quality of life can be helped with their Audiology Services, Optometry & Low Vision Services along with many other support groups and programs. All in attendance enjoyed conversing with our speaker and fellow Lions. As zone chair (IPDG Derek Eurales) for this Region and Zone, I was really impressed with the wealth of knowledge and presentation from our speaker. As Lions WE SERVE.

CARTERVILLE LIONS CLUB The club is sponsoring a weekly after school reading program at the local library. The librarians read to children 8 and under. After the reading we do crafts and have refreshments. This month we had 47 children and 34 adults in attendance. The first 30 children in attendance receive a free book. The club donated funds to Hospice in the memory of a former member. The club makes its building available, every Sunday, to the local narcotics anonymous group for its weekly meetings. There was a Region 3, Zone 2 meeting in 1CS held at the Carbondale Civic Center on March 15, 2018 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm. The Lions Clubs in Region 3, Zone 2 are Carbondale, Cobden, Desoto, Mounds and Murphysboro. The District Governor of 1CS, Daniel Harris, was also in attendance. The guest speaker for this occasion was Maureen Mall. Maureen is the President of the Center for Sight and Hearing, a state of the art facility in Rockford, Illinois that provides clinical, rehabilitative, and support to people with hearing or vision loss. Maureen has extensive experience in business development, healthcare, and non-profit management, and has 55

January 8 through January 14, 2018 was Lions International Worldwide Week of Service to fight Hunger. The Lions Club of Shawneetown joined Lions around the world for a special Worldwide Week of Service. This international event was a wonderful opportunity to support our new global service framework, and our goal of serving 200 million people per year by 2021, by relieving hunger in our communities. Shawneetown Lions President, Wayne Short, presented a monetary donation to Jack Lane of the Friends of Jesus Food Pantry in Equality on Tuesday Jan. 10th. Anyone at any time can host a project to fight hunger in their community. You could help stock a local food pantry, bag school lunches or distribute food to those who need it most. For more information on how to help serve in your community, just ask a Lion.

West Frankfort Lions Club Rob Williams from the West Frankfort Fire Department was the Guest Speaker. Lion President Dan Wells announced the rules for the 2018 Membership Drive and a copy of his letter outlining this was given or mailed to each member. Lion President Dan Wells reported a fraudulent email in his name that was sent to Lion Secretary Brenda McCluskie requesting a payment of $3550.00 to be sent to a Chicago Bank for an invoice that did not exist. He reported it to the Attorney General’s Office who did not want specifics about the case but just said, “Don’t send them any money.” A Financial Report was read by Lion Treasurer Bill Kelley. A Motion was made and passed to donate $250.00 to the West Frankfort Fire Department. A Motion was made and passed to purchase a full page (advertisement) in the upcoming District Convention Booklet. Guest Speaker was Rathel Housewirth who spoke on a book by Bob Greene, “Once Upon A Town.” The theme was about a small town in North Platte, Nebraska who met every troop train that came through their town during WWII and fed the soldiers at no cost to them. 56

New Athens Lions Club The New Athens Lions Club sponsored a bingo for the residents of the New Athens Nursing Home. The club donated items for the bingo that were awarded as prizes to the residents of the home that won. Items given out were bananas, apples, rice krispie squares and ice cream.

Shawneetown Lions Club We had an individual that requested eyeglasses. So (the person) met our requirement and he was then fitted with new eyeglasses. We collected aluminum cans for our mission that goes toward sending a Camper to Camp Manitowa in Benton Illinois. We had our regular business meeting discussing our upcoming events for 2018.

New Athens Lions Club The New Athens Lions adopted a camper for this summer's camp to be held in July 2018 at Camp Manitowa. This donation will allow one child to attend camp and experience fun activities that they normally would not have the chance to do. The New Athens Lions Club bought a book of Sight & Sound Sweepstakes tickets. The funds collected from the sale of these tickets will be used to fund various LCIF activities such as Camp Lions, Hearing and Vision Vans, Low Vision etc. The New Athens Lions Club made a 50.00 donation to the Lions Club of Illinois Endowment Fund. The donation was in memory of Lion Orville Vogler who passed away on Saturday February the 17th 2018. Lion (Vogler) had been a member of the New Athens Lions Cub since 1993. The New Athens Lions Club donated to the Marissa Girls Scout troop for a Powder Pinewood Derby race that IS to be held on Saturday March 10th, 2018. Algonquin Lions Club presented a check for $3,000 to the Jacobs Eagles Wings Program. The donation was from proceeds raised by the 2nd Annual 5K Run held in November (Thanksgiving morning, if you remember — it’s becoming a tradition in the Fox River Region!).

Both Cadet and Internship programs are offered to young people in the area to encourage careers in Fire Protection. DISTRICT 1A CONVENTION

The club donated its profits of $250.00 from a Pancake Breakfast fundraiser to Comfort Dogs, a non-profit organization that is church-based and raises Golden Retreivers to help comfort individuals who have anxiety, depression, or other emotional needs. These dogs differ from service dogs that the blind use. The cost of training a comfort dog is high, averaging $15,000 per dog — so the need to support these causes is great. Great Job Leos!!

Chicago Northwest Lions held their Corned Beef & Cabbage Dinner Banquet. Some members gathered for District 1A Bowling. This year weâ€™ve continued a tradition that we started last year by donating school supplies for the second semester at Meridian Elementary and High School in Mounds and Cairo Elementary and High School in Cairo.

A donation of $100 was sent to Camp Lions and $100 was sent for the Low Vision Screening Program. We have three members that received membership Chevrons. Lion Willie Eason (not pictured) and Lion Josie Eason were awarded their 10-year Chevron. Lion Ronnie Diggs was awarded his 45-year Chevron. We are very proud to have them as members of the Mounds Lions Club. IPDG Derek Eurales assisted in a school safety drill at the Cairo Elementary(Grade) School. During Black History Month Lion Willie and Josie Eason brought African American History alive for the

students and staff at the Mounds Head Start Center. They brought displays and many artifacts from their museum. The children and staff really enjoyed learning about African American History.

The Mounds Lions Club received the award from the Telethon of Stars for the most money donated ($1,500) from a club for children with disabilities. Coming up this month the club will be donating nonperishable food items to the Daystar Community Food Pantry in Cairo. The food is to be given to families with children. These items require little or no cooking so children can prepare them. Our First Lady Chassidy Harris has asked clubs to donate foods to local pantries to help prevent the hunger of children. On April 25 th the Mobile Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Unit is scheduled to be on the Stop N Shop parking lot in Mounds from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm sponsored by the Mounds Lions Club.
