HEAD OF SCHOOL WELCOME
Welcome to Austin International School! I'm honored you're considering our school as the next step in your child's educational journey. Growing up as a first-generation American, I watched my parents adapt to a new culture in order to feel at home. That experience gave me a strong sense of curiosity and resourcefulness, qualities that opened doors to teaching world languages in several countries and, later, serving as Head of School on three continents. The language skills, global perspective, and cultural literacy I gained early on were key to my success at every step, and sharing that same gift with the next generation is what drives my work as an international school educator. I'm proud to serve as a National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) Global Ambassador, partnering with five educators worldwide to offer thought leadership on issues facing international schools today. My work with the ISAS Standards Committee and as an International Baccalaureate Evaluation Leader also gives me the privilege of visiting schools across the US, and these visits only reinforce what I already know: what we have at Austin International School is truly unique. Walk through our halls and you'll hear students switching effortlessly between French, English, and Spanish. Our community includes families from over 60 countries, so classroom discussions about world events feel personal and real. We take great joy in celebrating the cultural traditions of our students and families, and that spirit enriches every child's experience. In a school culture woven from so many places, belonging isn't a stretch, it's almost inevitable. As you discover all AIS has to offer, I hope you, too, will find it a place to call home. The best way to begin is with a visit, and our admissions team would be glad to welcome you.

SEAMLESS TRILINGUAL EDUCATION Seamless trilingual education is Austin International School's approach to teaching a single, cohesive curriculum in French, English, and Spanish. Collaborative teaching teams in French, English, and Spanish work in true partnership. Students build essential knowledge and develop a rich, connected understanding of every topic across all three languages, not three separate versions of the same lesson. This approach spans every level of AIS, from Maternelle through Middle School, with practices adapted to each stage of a child's development. This requires thoughtful planning and close collaboration: designing comprehensive lessons, resources, projects, and assessments that help students build bridges between languages, compare and contrast ideas, and make meaningful connections across their learning. To achieve this, our teachers communicate, collaborate, compromise, and create together, holding what they know about teaching and what they're accustomed to in the classroom, with open hands. This means listening, adapting, and staying open to new methods, strategies, and ideas, always for the benefit of our students. Teachers develop and use shared, seamless practices so students experience true consistency across all three languages: common student portfolios, morning routines, class rules, procedures for lining up and turning in homework, and shared expectations for handwriting and participation. Whichever classroom a child walks into, the experience feels familiar and connected. At the heart of this approach are Seamless Units: thematic units built around guiding questions that challenge students to think critically, nurture their curiosity, and grow into lifelong learners in French, English, and Spanish alike.

FRENCH ACCREDITATION AND CURRICULUM Austin International School is accredited by the French Ministry of Education, the same authority that sets the standard for schools across France. This accreditation is not a one-time seal. It is maintained through regular review, and it shapes what happens in our classrooms every day. Our students follow the French national curriculum and learn within a program the Ministry evaluates against its own benchmarks. At least 60 percent of instruction takes place in French, with the remaining 40 percent shared between English and Spanish, so students grow up thinking and learning in three languages. The French curriculum is known for its clarity and its sequence. Learning is organized into cycles, each with defined goals, so the skills built in Maternelle carry into Élémentaire and on into Collège. Students practice careful writing, precise reasoning, and the habit of explaining their thinking in every language they learn. Accreditation also makes AIS part of the AEFE network, a family of nearly 600 French schools in 138 countries, so a student who begins here can continue the same curriculum wherever life takes their family. It is the difference between a school that teaches French and a school that teaches in French to a national standard. Alongside our ISAS accreditation and our status as an IB MYP World School, it gives students an academic foundation recognized in Austin, in France, and around the world. AGE

IB MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAMME The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) is an internationally recognized framework for the middle years of school. Austin International School is an authorized IB World School and offers the first three years of the programme, MYP 1 through MYP 3, from 6ème / 6th Grade through 4ème / 8th Grade. The MYP does not replace the French national curriculum. It shapes how that curriculum is taught. Students study across eight subject groups (Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, Arts, Physical and Health Education, and Design), and every unit is framed by one of six global contexts, from identities and relationships to globalization and sustainability. The context turns content into a question worth asking: why does this matter, and to whom? Teachers plan interdisciplinary units together, so students meet the same idea from more than one subject and in more than one language. Running through every subject are the Approaches to Learning, five sets of skills in thinking, communication, social skills, self-management, and research. At AIS, these are the same five habits of learning students have practiced since Maternelle, now applied with greater independence and assessed more explicitly. Work in each subject is measured against published criteria, so students know what strong work looks like before they begin and can see clearly where to go next. The programme culminates in the Community Project in 4ème / 8th Grade. Students identify a need in their community, plan a response, carry it out, and reflect on what they learned along the way. The MYP is the direct precursor to the IB Diploma Programme offered at several Austin high schools and globally. The habits it builds carry into any pathway a student chooses, whether an American diploma, the IB Diploma, or the French Baccalaureate.

MATERNELLE EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
10
AUSTIN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL VIEWBOOK
OVERVIEW
In Maternelle, the French Ministry of Education curriculum begins where all learning begins, with language. Our early childhood program centers on using language in all its dimensions and exploring the world in French, English, and Spanish from the very first day, through song, story, routine, and play. The French model treats Maternelle as a distinct and essential stage of learning in its own right. What looks like play is a framework of intentional activity. When children build, sort, pour, and negotiate, they are assembling the first tools of structured thought, number sense, and sequencing that mathematics will rely on later. Monthly themes introduce new vocabulary and concepts, building a shared cultural and literacy foundation across all three languages. Our teachers know that what matters most in these years is nurturing curiosity and building habits of learning. Those habits grow in everyday moments, when children wait their turn, name a feeling, ask for help, or try something hard while others are watching. Children also take on real responsibility at a small scale, caring for shared materials and learning that a classroom works only when everyone does their part. By the end of Maternelle, children are moving between three languages, building early literacy and numeracy skills, and starting to explore writing in both print and cursive. They are also increasingly ready to complete work on their own, with the quiet confidence of knowing they are a valued member of their school community.

AUSTIN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL VIEWBOOK
OVERVIEW
In Élémentaire, the French Ministry of Education curriculum guides students through their foundational years in French, English, and Spanish. A child who arrives in CP / 1st Grade sounding out words grows, into a CM2 / 5th Grade student who can research a question, shape an argument, and present their work in more than one language. Literacy anchors the early grades, with an emphasis on phonics and reading for meaning in all three languages. By the end of CE2 / 3rd Grade, children read and write independently in French and English and take on longer work without an adult beside them for every step. In Upper Elementary, expectations rise as students learn to structure an argument, support a claim, and revise their work rather than hand in a first attempt. In mathematics, the French curriculum builds fluency with numbers before shortcuts, so confidence grows alongside complexity, leading into fractions, decimals, and early geometry by CM2 / 5th Grade. Questioning the world through science, history, geography, and civics draws students into one steady invitation to ask how things work and why people live as they do. Students learn to find information, judge whether a source can be trusted, take notes in their own words, and share what they discover with an audience that will have questions of its own. Our teachers step back by design, offering structure and encouragement in place of step-by-step instruction, so students learn to carry a project from start to finish. Meanwhile, English writing grows more sophisticated and Spanish moves from vocabulary toward real conversation. Students leave Élémentaire ready for Middle School, continuing within a single, continuous French curriculum.

AUSTIN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL VIEWBOOK
OVERVIEW
In Collège, the French national curriculum remains the academic foundation, now taught through the IB Middle Years Programme. Students keep the clarity and sequence of the French system and gain a framework that asks them to connect ideas across subjects and put what they learn to use, in French, English, and Spanish. Across three years, the expectations notably rise. In 6ème / 6th Grade, students learn to work with several subject teachers, keep track of their own materials and deadlines, and collaborate on longer projects. By 5ème / 7th Grade, they research more independently, support a position with evidence, and revise their work before calling it finished. In 4ème / 8th Grade, they plan and lead the Community Project from first idea to final reflection and prepare for the move to high school. Collège also welcomes students who are new to French. Alongside the French immersion track, an English track offers the full MYP to students who enter with little or no French, so families arriving in Austin during the middle school years still have a place at AIS. Our Middle School faculty are subject experts who walk alongside students as they learn to ask hard questions, think critically, and take responsibility for themselves and their community. This is the age when curiosity sharpens into conviction, and we treat students as capable thinkers and actors rather than passive recipients of information. Students take real ownership through student council, clubs, and service learning, where the MYP idea of service as action comes to life. Graduating from 4ème / 8th Grade, our students head to high school as young people who think in more than one language, move across cultures, and act with purpose.

LOCAL & INTERNATIONAL FIELD TRIPS Austin International School carefully crafts field trips, local excursions, and international travel experiences to enhance the global education students receive at every phase of their academic journey. Beginning in preschool, students explore places like the aquarium and dinosaur park, fostering their curiosity and confidence through new experiences. In elementary school, classroom lessons prepare students for opportunities to make real-world connections through trips to West Cave Preserve, Blanton Museum, Easy Tiger Bakery, and Zach Theatre. Our annual Middle School Retreat emphasizes team building and collaboration, giving students a chance to forge friendships and discover new capabilities as they embark on a new chapter. At the end of Elementary and Middle School, students have the opportunity to take part in two international trips that serve as unforgettable language immersion experiences through authentic cultural interactions.

CM1 / 4th Grade West Texas Trip As our CM1 / 4th Grade students embark on a five-day journey to West Texas, they connect classroom learning with the region’s remarkable natural landscapes and rich history. This immersive experience combines academic exploration with personal growth, allowing students to discover the unique geography, culture, and heritage of this distinctive part of our state. For many students, this is their first time traveling away from parents, preparing them for the CM2 / 5th Grade trip.
CM2 / 5th Grade France Trip Each year, our CM2 / 5th Grade students travel to France on a journey that brings their elementary French studies to life. The class stays together in a château, and from there students attend a local French school, spend time with people in the community, and practice their language skills in everyday settings, from morning markets to neighborhood activities. For many students, it is the moment French stops being a school subject and becomes a language they use to live their day.
4ème / 8th Grade Spain Trip The annual 4ème / 8th Grade trip to Spain is a meaningful capstone to our students’ time at AIS. Students stay with carefully selected host families and experience daily life in a local Spanishspeaking community. The trip also includes guided travel through culturally rich regions, where students explore historic sites and vibrant cities that bring their Spanish studies to life.

FRENCH LANGUAGE SUPPORT
Our French language support programs welcome elementary students who are new to French and give them a clear path into our trilingual community. FLE (Français Langue Étrangère) is a one-year foundation class for new students in CP / 1st Grade through CE2 / 3rd Grade. Students receive dedicated French instruction during homeroom French time and join their gradelevel peers for PE, Art, Music, English, and Spanish. Partway through the year, CE2 / 3rd Grade students also begin joining their class for math, science, and social studies. FLA (French Language Acquisition) is a twoyear program for new students in CM1 / 4th Grade and CM2 / 5th Grade. It blends inclass support with small-group sessions, and grade-level work is adapted as each student's French develops, so students keep pace with their class while their language grows. In both programs, the focus is practical communication rather than memorization. Children learn to understand, speak, read, and write in French through games, projects, stories, and everyday conversation. Over the year, they build confidence steadily, moving from first words toward full conversations, reading, and writing. Students who need more time after FLE or FLA, or extra help at any point, can turn to FAST (French Accelerated Support & Transition) for continued guidance, alongside the academic support available to every AIS student. Teachers keep families informed throughout, with regular updates and a shared celebration of each milestone along the way. Students who join Austin International School in Middle School with little or no French can enter through our English track, described on page 15.

STUDENT SUPPORT
Learning in three languages is fun, but it isn't always the same for each child. Support is a normal, built-in part of the learning experience at Austin International School, grounded in starting early, keeping students in grade-level learning, and caring for the whole child. At our Cassady Campus (PS / Pre-K 3 through GS / Kindergarten), support is woven into everyday classroom and playground life, helping our youngest learners build confidence, early literacy and math skills, and language development. As students move to our Adelphi Campus (CP / 1st Grade through 4ème / 8th Grade), support continues within the classroom alongside teachers and co-teachers, with services tailored to each student's needs. Our trilingual student support team provides academic and language-acquisition support across all three AIS languages, and our school counselor offers social-emotional support to every student. By combining academic, language, and social-emotional support into daily school life, AIS creates a nurturing environment where students feel safe, valued, and equipped to grow into confident, resilient global citizens. If your child currently receives academic support in the form of accommodations or interventions, please be sure to mention this to our admissions team, who will connect you with our student support department.

ATHLETICS
At Austin International School, athletics are an integrated part of how students grow, and they develop important skills through training and competing as part of a team. Our coaches hold players to real expectations for effort and preparation, and athletics provide a space for students to build the same self-management and social skills they use in the classroom. AIS competes year-round in the Austin Private School Association (APSA) against other independent schools across the region. As early as CE1 / 2nd Grade, students can compete in cross country, while adding basketball, soccer, track and field, tennis, and volleyball in the coming years. Our teams welcome students from beginning to advanced levels. Owl athletes discover what they are capable of and stretch within a new context by showing up, persevering, leading, and winning and losing with grace. Through athletics, students commit to a schedule, answer to their teammates, and represent the school in front of others, and they learn firsthand that preparation and character show up in the result.

VISUAL & PERFORMING ARTS
Visual and performing arts are central to the student experience at Austin International School. From preschool through middle school, students take on a range of artistic projects that build creativity and connect to what they are learning in other subjects. In Maternelle, art is part of every day, supporting fine motor skills, creativity, and learning across the curriculum. Through songs and dramatic play, children build self-confidence while practicing French, English, and Spanish. Elementary and Middle School students have a dedicated art studio, where they explore a range of mediums and artistic concepts through projects tied to their curriculum. As they create, perform, and present, students develop both creative and analytical skills, question how they see the world, and learn to communicate feelings, experiences, and ideas through their work. Middle School performances are a highlight of the school year. Students present a series of trilingual shows, collaborating on costume and set design, choreography and dance, and scriptwriting and acting, and the whole AIS community looks forward to them.

DESIGN & INNOVATION STUDIO
At the Design and Innovation Studio (DIS), students take ideas off the page and build them. It is a hands-on space where students of all ages explore, invent, and solve problems through inquiry. The studio brings science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics together in the same projects, so students see that creative thinking and technical skill work best side by side. Younger students are introduced to design through playful, age-appropriate activities. They build simple prototypes, try out digital tools, and experiment with new materials, learning early that an idea can be tested, improved, and made real. Middle School students take on design challenges with real constraints. They research a problem, sketch and build a solution, test it, and reflect on what to change, developing critical thinking, collaboration, and resilience along the way. Across every grade, students learn in the studio that a first attempt is a starting point, not a verdict. They learn to take a problem apart, try an idea, see what fails, and make it better. By the time they leave AIS, that habit goes with them, whether the work in front of them is a prototype, an essay, or a question no one has answered yet.

AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES After school at Austin International School is where students follow their curiosity further. Some explore creative expression through Claymation and Cooking, while others add a new language with Mandarin or Arabic. Robotics and Chess Club invite new ways of thinking, and musicians build their skills in Piano, Strings Ensemble, Ukulele, and more. Classes are grouped by age, so students learn alongside peers at a similar stage, work at a level that fits them, and form friendships that often carry back into the school day. In Middle School, students go deeper and begin working with peers beyond our campus through Model United Nations, Coast to Coast (a science exchange trip), and Project Lead. Many alumni return in 9th grade for after school classes that prepare them for the Brevet, the French national diploma, keeping their French studies going after they leave AIS. Whether athletic, academic, or artistic, every after school program is a chance for students to explore, learn, and have fun together.

SPECIAL EVENTS Throughout the year, our faculty design experiences that ask students to follow their curiosity, express their creativity, and put their learning into practice, each drawing on the trilingual, international character of our community. UNITED Week (Understanding Nations, Indigenous Traditions, Ethnicity and Diversity): Each year, the world comes to Austin International School. Over several weeks, every class explores a different country's history, culture, and traditions, weaving that study into language, social studies, art, music, and more. Students bring their country to life through presentations, performances, and artifacts they create themselves. With families from more than 60 nationalities, students often learn directly from classmates and parents with firsthand connections. The project culminates in a celebration where AIS opens its doors to families and friends, with students leading the way as guides. STEAM Week: From preschool through 4ème / 8th Grade, students combine science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics in hands-on projects, designing, testing, and revising their solutions. They then present to peers, families, and faculty, explaining both what they built and how they got there. Trilingual Spelling Bees: Each year, students compete for Spelling Bee Champion in French, English, and Spanish. Preparing for three bees sharpens their attention to how each language works, and standing at the microphone teaches them to stay composed under pressure. Student Talent Show: Each spring, students take the stage to share music, dance, comedy, and everything in between. Many perform for the whole school community for the first time, and with every round of applause, they grow in confidence and in their willingness to put themselves forward.

FAMILY TESTIMONIALS
“We stumbled across an advertisement regarding AIS back in 2006. We didn’t know then that having all three of our children attend AIS (two through CM2 / 5th Grade and one through 4ème / 8th Grade) would be the best decision we would make for their early education. The language immersion, the small classroom size, the incredible and caring teachers, and the multicultural community all set the stage to help them grow and thrive in today’s ever-changing world. They have been set up for success academically and socially because of AIS. Our children are all proud alumni of AIS, and we are forever grateful to AIS for all it has given to our family.” — Holly & Chris Johnson, AIS family 2008-2022
“When we first chose AIS, it was for its commitment to celebrating diversity and fostering a truly international perspective — values that deeply align with our own. We wanted our children to grow in an environment where inclusion is lived daily, and where critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and strong communication are nurtured as essential skills for a rapidly changing world. At AIS, we’ve watched our three daughters grow into confident, curious, and compassionate learners. They are learning to think, read, and communicate in three different languages, and it’s remarkable to see how this shapes their ability to view the world from multiple perspectives. Thank you for being a huge part of our village!” — Ashley & Ryan Wigley, AIS family 2020-current
“Words cannot encapsulate the gratitude we have for our sons attending AIS. We are already a multilingual family (we concurrently speak 3 languages inside our home). We highly value formal language learning and the ability to competently communicate with individuals in other languages. We are beyond grateful for the gift AIS has bestowed upon us, and the opportunity our children will have to learn in a trilingual, multicultural, and multinational school. We know that they will build a strong and lasting foundation that will propel them in the future.” — Naomi Brodkey & Eran Sharon, AIS family 2026-current
