PUBLISHER’S LETTER

AFM HAS FINALLY GONE TO THE DOGS

The New AFM Team (clockwise, from left to right)

Spanky (distribution chief), Cooper (ad sales), Tessa (digital products), Cora (operations), Charlie (art direction), Toby (editor)

AS YOU CAN SEE, I’M CRAZY ABOUT DOGS. If this photo weren’t evidence enough, right now we have four of them residing happily at our ranch. When the family gets together that number almost doubles. So it’s no surprise that this month’s “fittest dogs” issue is one of my favorites.

Of course, I’m not alone in my love for our loyal canine friends. In America, more than 37 percent of people (that’s 43 million households) have one or more dogs. And these 77 million dogs don’t come cheap. Americans spend more than $14 billion per year on vet bills alone. Yes, we love our dogs. Unfortunately, we seem to be just as lax about their health and fitness as we are about own. Did you know that half of the nearly 171 million dogs and cats in the US are overweight? That’s better than the number of obese Americans, but not by much. The fact is that basic health and fitness concepts for animals are no different than people. Eat nutritious foods and exercise. So here’s a novel idea: why not be your dog’s fitness trainer? Establish a fitness program for your best friend and then dedicate yourself to actively pursuing that program.

HOW CAN YOU KEEP YOUR DOG FIT? APPLY THE SAME CAUTIONS AND APPROACHES YOU WOULD FOR YOURSELF. HERE ARE SOME GUIDELINES TO FOLLOW:

12 • MARCH 2011 • AUSTINFITMAGA ZINE.COM

1. Before you train your dog, ensure that both of you can do the routines safely. 2. Make sure there are no health risks. Check with your doctor and your vet. 3. Motivate yourself and your dog by making the activity fun for both of you. 4. Set up a realistic routine that you can follow and stick to.

Sometimes our society makes healthy living a challenge, and a support system is necessary for success. That goes for both you and your dog, so be each other’s buddy and get healthy and fit together. Both of you will feel better, sleep better, be less stressed and smile more. You will also develop a wonderful, lifelong friendship. If what they say is true and a dog really is man’s best friend, then what better way is there to say thanks to your best friend than by taking responsibility for his — and your — health. For inspiration, check out the incredible dogs in this month’s issue. Their feats of strength, agility and fitness are awesome, and all performed with a big smile. We hope this issue will be another incentive to make healthy living your way of life.

Keep Austin Fit,

5. Start easy and work yourself and your pet into it. 6. Switch it up. Walk, jog, play Frisbee or even swim. 7. Try to do something every day for at least 30 minutes. 8. Fuel is critical, so make sure that you and your dog are both eating healthy. 9. Make sure you both are always well hydrated. 10. Have fun!

Abby BEST SOCCE R PLAYE R 4 years old, female Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Responses compliments of Amanda and Eric McCullough

S

HE'S SUPPOSEDLY A LAP-DOG BREED, BUT ABBY HAS SINCE DECIDED THAT SHE DOESN’T WANT THAT REPUTATION. INSTEAD, SHE LOVES TO FISH, CHASE SQUIRRELS, AND KICK HER SOCCER BALL (USING HER HEAD) FOR HOURS NON-STOP. SHE CAN’T WAIT UNTIL WE GET HOME SO THAT SHE CAN HIT THE BACKYARD TO PLAY. WHAT ARE YOUR DOG'S FAVORITE THINGS TO DO FOR FITNESS? Abby has three sports that she absolutely loves. Her favorite is soccer, where we kick her soccer ball and she uses her head and paws to bring it back to us so we can kick it again (and again, and again). Abby also loves to chase a stuffed squirrel that we twirl at the

Q&A

end of a long rope. Another favorite is chasing a rubber fish that we cast from a fishing rod. HOW DOES YOUR DOG FIGURE INTO YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE? Abby makes sure we get moving every day. She follows us around the house when we get home from work until we take her outside to play. 11 Fittest Pups in Austin • Fitness • 27

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO TAKE YOUR DOG IN AUSTIN? Mt. Bonnell. Abby leads the way up the steps using her four-legged drive.

Q&A

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR FIT DOG? She makes us laugh every day.

Buddy

Responses compliments of George LeCrenn

W ORL D ’S STRO N GEST 7 ½ years old, male Rockweiler (Rottweiler)

B

UDDY IS ONE OF AUSTIN'S FITTEST DOGS BECAUSE OF HIS STRENGTH; HE WRESTLES WITH HUGE ROCKS, DRAGS A FRISBEE AROUND AND LIKES TO PLAY WITH GIGANTIC LOGS IN THE WATER. HE’S NOW VERY WELL KNOWN IN AUSTIN BECAUSE WE FREQUENT REDBUD AND AUDITORIUM SHORES. I RESCUED BUDDY FROM THE SAN DIEGO ANIMAL SHELTER WHEN HE WAS ONLY 4 MONTHS OLD. THEY WERE GOING TO PUT HIM DOWN BECAUSE THEY SAID HE HAD "BEHAVIORAL PROBLEMS." I FOUGHT TO SAVE HIM AND WITH THE HELP OF THE SOUTHWESTERN ROTTWEILER CLUB OF SAN DIEGO, WE WERE ABLE TO SAVE HIS LIFE. THEY CONFIRMED THAT HE'S A PERFECTLY NORMAL AND HEALTHY DOG.

Q&A IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT MAKES YOUR DOG ONE OF AUSTIN'S FITTEST DOGS? Buddy has awesome strength. He’s the only dog in Austin that can pick up a 60-pound rock with his teeth, carry it around, then drag and roll it around. He's the strongest dog in town! DESCRIBE YOUR DOG’S PERSONALITY IN THREE WORDS. Happy, loving, loyal.

Download the AFM iPhone app, and scan this code to see Buddy pick up and eat rocks

DO YOU HAVE YOUR DOG ON A SPECIAL DIET? I supplement his dry food

with chopped raw carrots, brown rice, an omega-3 fish oil pill and a nutritious and delicious homemade gravy made from bones in the slow cooker. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR FIT DOG? Buddy has brought so much happiness into my life with his great companionship. He always brings a smile to my face and he provides entertainment, joy and laughter to the people of Austin. I’m jealous because he’s way more popular than I am. He’s a very good boy!

Kiah LONGES T J UMPE R

W

E ADOPTED KIAH ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO FROM THE TOWN LAKE ANIMAL SHELTER. SHE’S A GREAT RUNNING PARTNER, AND IS ALWAYS MOTIVATED TO WORK OUT HARD. WE THINK KIAH’S ONE OF AUSTIN'S FITTEST DOGS BECAUSE SHE’S ESSENTIALLY A TRIATHLETE ON FOUR LEGS. SHE LIKES TO RUN, MOUNTAIN BIKE, SWIM, HIKE AND CAN REALLY JUMP FAR INTO THE LAKE. SHE’LL ALSO PLAY FETCH WITH A BALL FOR HOURS AND NEVER GET TIRED. BELIEVE IT OR NOT, KIAH CAN ALSO SUP, KAYAK AND LOVES THE OCEAN, TOO. SHE’LL SIT, STAY, LAY-DOWN AND ROLL OVER, BUT WOULD RATHER SPEND TIME WITH US TAKING LONG WALKS ON THE BEACH, PLAYING IN THE RAIN OR RELAXING ON HER BIG, SOFT BED AFTER A TOUGH WORKOUT.

3 years old, female Australian Kelpie

Responses compliments of Michelle Beaver Gilliland

IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT MAKES YOUR DOG ONE OF AUSTIN'S FITTEST DOGS? Kiah is full of energy and she’s solid muscle. She loves to run with us — while training for the Austin Marathon, she goes for miles and miles. She runs alongside when we bike, she loves to swim and fetch and most of all to jump. She has endurance like no other and is impossible to tire out.

Q&A

HOW DOES YOUR DOG FIGURE INTO YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE? Kiah runs with us every day. She’ll even hop on the treadmill next to us when we’re at our community gym. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO TAKE YOUR DOG IN AUSTIN? Kiah loves any place with water. Cambell’s Hole, Auditorium Shores, Lake Austin, Sculpture Falls or any part of the greenbelt. She loves it all!!

Oleta C Y CL IST E XTRAO RDIN AIRE 8 years old, female Poodle

Responses compliments of Mike Gaudion

WHAT ARE YOUR DOG’S FAVORITE THINGS TO DO FOR FITNESS? Oleta's favorite thing is to ride her bike. She likes going for walks chasing squirrels and the neighbor’s cats, too. She also likes riding the jet ski and we may try kayaking this year.

Q&A

O

LETA IS ABOUT EIGHT YEARS OLD, AND I HAVE HAD HER FOR A YEAR AND A HALF. I TAUGHT HER TO RIDE MY MOUNTAIN BIKE, AND SHE TOOK TO IT SO I BOUGHT HER A ROAD BIKE. NOT COUNTING THE MOUNTAIN BIKE, SHE PUT ALMOST 2,500 MILES IN FOR 2010. AS SOON AS I DROP MY WINTER WEIGHT AND GET MY LEGS BACK WE’RE GOING TO DO OUR FIRST CENTURY. SHE EVEN HAS HER OWN FAN PAGE ON FACEBOOK. FIND "TEAM OLETA" TO CHECK OUT MORE PICTURES AND READ ABOUT SOME OF HER ADVENTURES OVER THE PAST YEAR.

32 • MARCH 2011 • AUSTINFITMAGAZINE.COM

HOW DOES YOUR DOG FIGURE INTO YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE? I’m a recovering fat man so I need to stay active. I got Oleta and she wants to be with me 24/7. Sitting around with a poodle in my lap was not an option so my thought was to take her on my mountain bike around Town Lake. I figured her added weight (about 15 pounds) would make me stronger and faster when she was not on

the bike. I later bought her the road bike and I rarely ride without her now. DO YOU HAVE YOUR DOG ON A SPECIAL DIET? When I got Oleta she would only touch dog food as a last resort. I put her on Beneful Healthy Weight dog food. She’s a princess so she still talks me into some hand outs. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR FIT DOG? My favorite thing about Oleta is that when it’s time to ride she is all business and it’s all systems go; she’s in it for the long haul. After a long day on the bike or any day for that matter, she’s in my lap speeding up my recovery time with her special poodle dog healing powers.

Tennyson T H OROUGHBRE D 7 month old, male Ibizan Hound

Download the AFM iPhone app, and scan this code to see Tennyson’s photo shoot at Austin Subaru

Responses compliments of Lara Gale

A

T 7 MONTHS, TENNYSON IS ALREADY 27 INCHES TALL AT THE SHOULDERS. HIS FAVORITE ACTIVITY (OUTSIDE OF HARASSING HIS SIBLINGS, A DWARF IBIZAN AND A PHARAOH HOUND) IS RUNNNING THE TRAILS WITH ME BEHIND OUR HOUSE NEAR TURKEY CREEK. TENNYSON ALSO LOVES CHASING SQUIRRELS, BUNNIES, LIZARDS, BUGS, LEAVES AND ANYTHING ELSE THAT MOVES. SINCE HE IS STILL A PUPPY, HE CAN BE QUITE THE GOOF-BALL, BUT HE IS THE SWEETEST BOY ON THE PLANET. HE DOES NOT RETRIEVE OR CATCH FRISBEES AND HE WILL NOT SIT AND STAY OR ANY OF THAT POLITE STUFF. BUT HE IS INDEED VERY FIT, A RUNNER BY NATURE AND HAS A PERSONALITY YOU WILL NEVER FORGET.

WHAT ARE YOUR DOG'S FAVORITE FITNESS ACTIVITIES? He has three fenced-in acres at home where he runs free with another Ibizan Hound (Georgia) and a Pharaoh Hound (Aramis) chasing squirrels and his pack mates. And with me, he loves hiking the Turkey Creek trails and walking in our neighborhood.

Q&A

DESCRIBE YOUR DOG IN THREE WORDS. Goof-ball, prankster, sweetheart! DO YOU HAVE YOUR DOG ON A SPECIAL DIET? Yes, all of our guys eat about 10 percent Orijens kibble (no by-products or garbage in it) and 90 percent home cooked food — (all organic) chicken, bison, liver, yams, brown rice, squash, pumpkin, fish oil and plain yogurt. There is nothing in their food bowl that I wouldn’t eat! WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR DOG? Because he is still a puppy he's into everything right now, but he is hands-down the sweetest boy on the planet. I love that he makes me smile every single day, and usually makes me laugh (and snort out loud)!

Allie T HE TOMBOY 4 years old, female Maltipoo

A

LLIE IS BEST KNOWN AS THE ROCKET! SHE’S BEEN SEEN OUTRUNNING DOGS ALL OVER AUSTIN. DON'T LET HER FLUFFY HAIR FOOL YOU; ALLIE IS A TOMBOY WHO LOVES TO DIG IN THE DIRT, PLAY CHASE AND TAKE LONG WALKS. SHE’S FULL OF SPUNK AND SPEED!

WHAT ARE YOUR DOG'S FAVORITE THINGS TO DO FOR FITNESS? Allie loves to take walks around the neighborhood and play at the dog park.

Q&A

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO TAKE YOUR DOG IN AUSTIN? We love anywhere with beachfront water access. She loves romping in shallow water and running up and down the water’s edge. This always involves a bath afterwards.

Download the AFM iPhone app, and scan this code to see Allie’s photo shoot at White Rock Veterinary Clinic

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR FIT DOG? Allie might be a tiny fluff ball but she’ll surprise you — she is a tomboy! She outruns most dogs, loves to dig in the dirt and play chase while maintaining a sweet snuggly side!

Neko DISTANCE RUN N ER 2 years old, female Cattle Dog/Pit Bull mix

Responses compliments of Rob Hill

N

EKO, THE SOMEWHAT-OFFICIAL MASCOT OF CHARITY RUNNING GROUP TEAM SPIRIDON, SPENT HER FIRST DAYS WITH ME IN THE OFFICES OF THE AUSTIN MARATHON AND HALF MARATHON, WHERE SHE WAS EXPOSED TO FAR BETTER ATHLETES THAN HER DAD. SHE'S ALWAYS WITH ME ON MY RUNS AND WORKOUTS DURING THE WEEK, INCLUDING THE LONG RUNS IN OUR MARATHON TRAINING PROGRAM. SHE'LL OFTEN ACCOMPANY ONE OF MY RUNNERS ON THE SATURDAY LONG RUN, AND THEN DO THE SAME WITH ME ON SUNDAY. RECENTLY, SHE RAN 8 MILES IN THE MORNING, AND 16 WITH ME THAT NIGHT, AND DIDN'T SEEM FAZED AT ALL. WITH A BACKPACK ON, SHE COLLECTS AND CARRIES DONATIONS ON OUR RUN/DRINK/REPEAT PUB RUNS THAT BENEFIT GROUPS LIKE AUSTIN PETS ALIVE! AND EMANCIPET. AND SHE'S NOT A ONE-TRICK PONY (OKAY, DOG) — SHE CAN HANDLE DISTANCE, BUT SHE'S ALSO ONE OF THE FASTEST DOGS AT THE PARK (WHEN SHE'S NOT TRYING TO SEE HOW HIGH SHE CAN HURDLE).

36 • MARCH 2011 • AUSTINFITMAGAZINE.COM

IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT MAKES YOUR DOG ONE OF AUSTIN’S FITTEST DOGS? Neko's probably one of Austin's fittest dogs because she excels in so many areas, and loves to get a workout. She's gone 18 miles and was ready to go to the dog park afterwards. She's also usually the fastest dog at the park, when she's not trying to hurdle other dogs. She can swim for hours and she's strong. It seems like there's not a lot she can't do, and she enjoys all of it.

Q&A

DESCRIBE YOUR DOG’S PERSONALITY IN THREE WORDS. Friendly, curious and exuberant. DO YOU HAVE YOUR DOG ON A SPECIAL DIET? I feed Neko Castor and Pollux Organix, and give her Dogswell Happy Hips treats. She reminds me of an efficient athlete, because she appreciates good food, but is just not that driven by it. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR FIT DOG? My favorite thing about Neko, aside from the love and care she gives me, is that she's a great ambassador. She's the de facto mascot of Team Spiridon, a nonprofit training group that raises money for animal welfare organizations. She was found on the streets of Houston alone when she was two weeks old. I always think about what must have happened to her brothers and sisters, and that's what steered Team Spiridon into trying to help out. Everywhere she goes, she puts a smile on people's faces, reminding them why we do what we do.

Q&A

B

ELLA IS A FLYING, FLIPPING FRISBEE ATHLETE AND A PERFECT MATCH FOR ME, AN ELITE LEVEL ENDURANCE MOUNTAIN BIKE RACER. ALSO, BELLA IS A SUPERFOCUSED AND FUN COMPETITIVE AGILITY DOG. IN FACT, WE’VE QUALIFIED FOR AGILITY NATIONALS TWO YEARS IN A ROW. BUT BELLA THE EXTREME ATHLETE HAS A SOFT SIDE, TOO. SHE’S A THERAPY DOG WITH DIVINECANINES.ORG AND LOVES VISITING WOUNDED WARRIORS AT FORT HOOD, AS WELL AS HELPING INCREASE LITERACY IN AUSTIN AS A BARKING BOOK BUDDY. IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT MAKES YOUR DOG ONE OF AUSTIN'S FITTEST DOGS? Even after an intense session of Frisbee or agility, Bella's boundless energy and endurance allow her to simmer down and work as a most exquisite, caring and loving therapy dog. DESCRIBE YOUR DOG’S PERSONALITY IN THREE WORDS. Inquisitive, attentive, confident.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR FIT DOG? The first day I met my amazing friend Lee Mannix he walked right up to Bella, knelt down and she played with him in the silliest way. He laughed and giggled. He stood up, looked me straight in the eyes and said, “This dog is one in a million. She’s a gift. You enjoy every single day with her. You will never have another dog like her.” My favorite thing about Bella is not one thing, it’s everything.

follow us anywhere we go, including up difficult rock climbs. She recently did two laps with us at the Ultracentric 24-hour mountain bike race and was ready for more. DO YOU HAVE YOUR DOG ON A SPECIAL DIET? We don’t feed her any grains. She eats Blue Wilderness from the Blue Buffalo Company, which is 100 percent grain-free, and includes pure protein sources like duck, chicken and turkey, and nutrient-packed fruits

and veggies. The food is cold-pressed and the closest thing to a raw diet. She’ll also eat raw chicken (bone and all), as well as grassfed beef. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR FIT DOG? She is so sweet and fun, and has such a big and expressive smile, you always know when she’s happy. She makes us laugh and want to get out and play as much as possible. We are so blessed to have her as part of our family.

BAMA HAS TRAINED FOR TWO IRONMANS AND MULTIPLE 70.3 AND OLYMPIC-DISTANCE RACES. DURING HIS TRAINING HE’S DONE RUNS INTO THE 15-MILE RANGE. HE ALSO HAS COMPETED IN THE DOGGIE DUATHLON, PLACING SECOND OVERALL. BAMA IS ONE OF AUSTIN’S FITTEST DOGS SIMPLY BECAUSE OF THE AMOUNT OF TIME HE SPENDS TRAINING AND PERFECTING HIS EFFICIENCY AS A SWIMMER AND A RUNNER. HE NEVER COMPLAINS ABOUT BEING TIRED OR NOT WANTING TO TRAIN; HE IS THE FIRST TO RISE AND THE LAST TO LEAVE THE TRAIL.

IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT MAKES YOUR DOG ONE OF AUSTIN'S FITTEST DOGS? Bama is one of the fittest dogs due to the sheer volume of training he does in a given year — two Ironmans, countless road races and the Doggy Duathlon second place finish.

Q&A

HOW DOES YOUR DOG FIGURE INTO YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE? We take him on every run and openwater swim that we do. We even have friends take him because he is such a well-mannered dog to run with. If you run

an 8-minute pace, he’ll oblige, but if you want to run a 6-minute mile pace, he’ll do that too. DESCRIBE YOUR DOG’S PERSONALITY IN THREE WORDS. Lover, Athlete, Lover WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR FIT DOG? Everyone who meets him wants to clone him. It’s just an energy he puts out that makes you smile. Before we go out of town, we’re always asked, “Hey, can I watch your dog?” Let’s just say he gets his parents free rides to the airport.AFM

ust a year ago, Austin decided to add its name to the list of America's "no kill" cities by implementing the No Kill Plan, which set out a list of programs to eliminate the number of pets euthanized at animal shelters in Austin. While the city passed a "no kill" moratorium, it was a vanity move of sorts, since additional funding to support the needs of homeless animals didn’t accompany the legislation. This put the burden on shelters themselves, which were already overwhelmed by the influx of parentless pets.

he city’s largest depot for wayward animals — Town Lake Animal Shelter — has dramatically reduced its euthanizing rate over the years, from as high as 75 percent to now less than 30 percent. However, it’s sadly still a kill shelter even today. To pick up the slack and offer a humane alternative, non-profits and donation-based shelters have been forced to step it up. And the leader in that effort, by leaps and bounds, has been Pets Alive! (APA!), whose headquarters now sprawls along the east side of South Lamar Blvd. Since 2008, Austin Pets Alive! has saved the lives of 6,670 Austin cats and dogs — which comes out to more than seven each day. In a no-kill community, healthy or treatable pets are not euthanized in animal shelters. While there are different interpretations of "healthy and treatable," most no-kill communities have found this classification describes at least 90 percent of the animals entering the shelter. Cities that have already reached no-kill status include San Francisco, California, Ithaca, New York and Richmond, Virginia.

While APA! has always been instrumental in helping animals in need, the organization didn’t really start making waves until Dr. Ellen Jefferson took over in 2008. In her less than three-year tenure there, she’s managed to move the organization (and the city of Austin) much more quickly to becoming no-kill. In fact, in 2010, just two years after she started with APA!, the group had saved as many animals from the Town Lake Animal Shelter (TLAC) as all of Austin's other rescue and shelter groups combined. APA! rescues and adopts animals from the shelter, then finds adoptees to prevent the pets from being euthanized. TLAC is an open-intake facility, which means they must accept every cat and dog brought to the center. This results in a lot of Amy Fitzsimmons, pets in need of a home. head of the Healthy Pets for Healthy People program In an effort to make Austin a no-kill city, the APA! has studied the best practices of other cities who’ve accomplished the goal or are on the road to becoming no-kill. The all-volunteer organization has been able to learn what works best, while optimizing Austin's unique characteristics to increase adoption rates every year. And clearly one of Austin's most unique characteristics is its fitness community, something APA! has cleverly taken advantage of. For example, APA! uses its Lady Bird Lake location to run the Healthy Pets for Healthy People program, in an effort to match up very active dogs with fit people. Every weekend (both Saturdays and Sundays) from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., volunteers and trainers "check out" dogs to walkers and joggers on the Town Lake trail. This program lets high-energy dogs get the extra stimulation (both physical and mental) and attention they need, while giving volunteer walkers and runners an unforgettable time with an enthusiastic dog. The Healthy Pets for Healthy People program has been in place for a little more than a year. In that time, 200 high-need dogs have participated and the average time until adoption has been just two weeks.

Keep Austin Tucked!

Question&Answer To better understand the impact this group has on Austin's overall community, we wanted to hear from APA!'s own Amy Fitzsimmons, head of the Healthy Pets for Healthy People program. We recently caught up with her to learn a little bit more about the incredible effort the organization is making to help Austin achieve its no-kill goal.

How did Austin Pets Alive! get its start? APA! was founded in the 90s, and they made some great strides in lowering the kill rate. Then Dr. Ellen Jefferson took over in 2008, and the organization began pulling pets from Town Lake Animal Center's euthanasia list. APA! had a meteoric rise in 2008 because of Dr. Jefferson.

Working with rescue animals has to be pretty tough emotionally. What's the atmosphere like at the center? The atmosphere at the center is amazing. There are lots of hugs and tears but they are usually for good things, like a favorite long-stay dog getting to go home! It’s easy to stay positive when there’s so much good going on around us. Austin Pets Alive!

More Q&A Why do you think more people don't choose rescue dogs when looking for a pet? Is it a conscious choice or just lack of information? I truly believe it’s lack of information. Many people think that all rescue dogs have health or behavioral problems, but many of our dogs are immediately adoptable. Who are the most common dog adopters? Younger, older, families, singles? I don’t think we have just one common adopter group! We have a wide variety of dogs to choose from and they each attract a different kind of adopter. It feels great to make matches and know you just helped change two lives. With thousands of adoptions and lives saved since 2008, Austin Pets Alive! has made great strides in making Austin a no-kill city. What do you think needs to happen for Austin to fully accomplish its no-kill goal? I think we need to take advantage of the momentum we have to continue building community involvement. Thanks to years of hard work and advocating, it’s no longer a question of if, but when we officially cross the finish line. What programs or strategies do you have for making adoptable pets visible to viable owners? We do off-site adoptions seven days a week at locations all over Austin. Our marketing and PR team is amazing; we have writers and photographers making sure our animals’ personalities shine through on our website, blog, facebook, twitter, craigslist, flyers…we try to use every medium possible. Describe a typical weekday morning at Lady Bird Lake with your "Healthy Pets for Healthy People" program. Busy! Volunteers get there at 8:30 a.m. to set up, and walkers and runners start showing up a little before 9 a.m. It feels amazing to see how excited people are about taking the dogs out on the trail! My favorite part is watching the dogs return from their walk or run with huge smiles on their faces. How do you select which dogs participate in the Healthy Pets for Healthy People program? They’re the ones who need it the most. It’s almost always our high energy adolescent and young adult dogs, particularly those who have been in the program for any length of time. Meeting their needs is our first priority and it’s usually a pretty clear choice which dogs would love a trip to the trail!

52 • MARCH 2011 • AUSTINFITMAGA ZINE.COM

Approximately what percentage of the dogs you handle are considered 'unadoptable' at first, and about how long does it take for them to lose this status? In my opinion, they lose that “unadoptable” status the second they enter our program. Some of them may need a little extra support to really thrive and appeal to more adopters, but they’re all good dogs. They’re all adoptable and loved on intake by the APA! volunteers and staff. Tell us a little bit about the Wag-a-thon Walk-a-thon coming up in March. APA! formed a partnership with Continental Automotive Group late last year. They are sponsoring our Behavioral Rehabilitation room for dogs and are hosting fundraisers for us throughout the year to pay for the sponsorship (20K). The details are still being worked out, but here’s what we know so far: Course: 1.8 miles (that's 13.1, a half marathon, in doggie miles) Date: Sunday, March 13, 2011 Time: 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Venue: Domain or Barton Creek Mall Entry/Donation Fee: $20 to $25 Estimated Participants: 500 people, 250 to 350 dogs Title Sponsor: Continental Automotive Group - Austin Subaru Food Sponsor: Austin's Pizza Goal: Raise $5,000 for Austin Pets Alive! We’ll have lots of available dogs from our program out there that the public can “borrow” to walk for the event.

What does Austin Pets Alive! need most from people who want to help but can't adopt an animal? We’re trying to increase our sponsorships and donations, so we can expand our programs and maximize the life-saving. And we always need volunteers. You can walk dogs, snuggle cats, foster, help organize events, join the behavior or medical teams, take photos, write and work on data entry from home…the possibilities are really endless and the rewards are so great that volunteering with APA! is easily one of the best decisions you’ll ever make.

BLOCK TRAINING BY PATRICK EVOE, PROFESSIONAL TRIATHLETE

A multisport athlete’s secret to making leaps. “Best place to cure what ails you”

A

s a multisport athlete, I know it's a challenge to continually improve in swimming, biking and running. It's tempting to try to squeeze in the same numbers and types of each session every week, but your body adapts to the training and pretty soon you're stuck on a fitness plateau. One of the most effective ways to break through your stagnating fitness is by incorporating block training into your plan.

CHOOSING YOUR BLOCK Choose a duration for the block that works for your schedule. For your first block, try seven to 10 days to focus on one sport. Make sure you incorporate recovery into your plan so that your body can realize the gains from your training. You will also need to pay special attention to how the added volume from a single sport affects your body in terms of increased wear, tear and injury. For example, if you are adding significant swimming volume, pay special attention to your shoulders. Runners should always take care when adding volume because of the increased risk for injuries. The biggest challenge with focusing on a single sport is keeping your fitness in the other two. If you back off on two, your form will inevitably suffer a little. To combat this loss, you will need to maintain short (but intense) sessions in the two non-focus disciplines. For example, some training partners and I were doing a two week cycling block to jumpstart our springtime biking fitness. While we were focused on riding every day, we would still jump in the pool for 20 to 45 minutes, and the same with running. At the end of the two weeks of cycling and recovery, we returned to our normal swim-bike-run training regime, but with a noticeable jump in our cycling.

MAKE IT YOURS This style of training is personal, so find a way that works for you. Some find it mentally challenging to back off two sports to see gains in one. Others may not like focusing on their weaknesses or spending time away from their favorite workouts. And it can be hard to break away from the pack if you are part of a training group where the social aspect of training is just as important as your performance. But even in the face of these challenges, incorporating a focused training block is the surest way to break through your next fitness plateau. afm

www.texasrowingcenter.com

58 • MARCH 2011 • AUSTINFITMAGA ZINE.COM

THE BASICS The idea behind block training is to focus a set amount of time (usually one to three weeks) primarily on one sport. It’s a simple concept: pick one sport in which you want to make gains. You should dedicate yourself to the sport during that time; swim like a pure swimmer, bike like a cyclist or run like a runner. The focused training will create a needed overload on your body, and you'll be able to break through your plateau. Suppose your body is used to three bikes, three runs and three swims each week. Block training focused on biking would include five or six bikes, two runs and two swims. The added cycling will force your body to adapt to the increased training load. You can also try incorporating double workouts for a single sport periodically during your block. Competitive runners often run twice a day and elite swimmers often do two swim workouts a day. You shouldn't double up on a single sport every day, but try to incorporate doubles periodically. If you’re focused on cycling, try an early trainer ride in the morning and a spin class after work. If you’re used to your masters swim session, try your masters swim in the morning and then an easy 45-minute swim on your own in the evening. Training with doubles will tire you out in a different way, and after your recovery, you will notice improved performance.

MONICA’S THOUGHTS

his month, the workout was better described as ‘Kick Camy’s Butt!’ My adorable, miniature, dappled Dachshund received a workout like she never had before. As we pulled up to Zilker Park, Camy was very curious about where we were. She hasn’t ever been to a huge open park. She was slightly intimidated by all the traffic noise and other large dogs that happened to come by and check out our spot. As a fearless leader, I encouraged her to walk along with me without trying

to turn around. Immediately, we were introduced to Vickie Menchhofer who owns and runs Fit Dog Austin. With a huge smile, she explained what we would be doing and how the workout would go. Even though Camy is great on walks, I was a bit unsure about how she’d do. Earlier in the morning I had a very intense workout at HIT Center and wasn’t up for much of getting my bootie kicked, but as we got going into the workout, my tired legs perked up again and Camy’s tail became untucked!

Awww, isn’t ? Camy so cutetShe’s a swee heart.

It was amazing to see how connected Camy and I were as we jogged around the cones, side-shuffled and backpedaled. I’ve read books and understand how animals feed off our energy, expressions and most importantly, body language. Here, I could see if happening first-hand. After a few rounds of cones and hurdles we moved to the part of the workout Vickie calls, “Park the Dog.” We slipped leashes over a little stake in the ground and did stationary movements like jump squats, planks, push-ups and lunges.

As I was driving home I realized how much fun I had with Camy and interacting on a fitness level with her. I take her on walks all the time, but this was definitely the first time I exercised with her. I highly recommend this fun and (great workout) with your pup. Vickie has a very easy-going spirit and you can tell she loves what she does. I encourage you to step out of your regular comfort zone with your four-legged pet and see how you connect with one of God’s best critters! afm

THE FUNNY SIDE OF FIT

What is “The Funny Side of Fit”? Every month JB Hager takes a humorous slant on a different topic, sharing his experiences and funny fitness follies

hen was the last time you actually thanked your dog? They’re amazing little creatures and the best fitness buddies you could ever hope for.

For example, I realized I should give more props to my running partner, Roxy, who I often refer to as my jailhouse, crack whore rescue dog. My daughter picked her out from a shelter just over a year ago. Roxy had been there for almost three months and was days away from getting the needle, but my daughter connected with her and fell in love with this shepherd/beagle mix. At the time I didn’t anticipate a fitness buddy. She was coming off a pregnancy and her boobs were practically dragging on the ground. I suggested we name her Dolly or Anna Nicole, but my daughter insisted on Roxy. Now as I work out with this wonderful pup, I’m constantly reminded of the amazing things about our fitness relationship. In fact, if you run, walk, bike with your dog you should probably take 74 • MARCH 2011 • AUSTINFITMAGA ZINE.COM

some of these things into account: 1. Dogs are always ready to go on a moment’s notice, without question, any time of day. If you rustled them from a deep sleep at 2 a.m. and took them running, they would take that first step with nothing but a big smile on their face. 2. Think of all the planning and preparation that goes into your training program. You have distance days, intervals and recovery days. At the beginning of a run, your dog has no idea if they’re going to run 100 yards or 15 miles. They don’t question it, they just do it. 3. I don’t know if you’re like me, but there’s serious preparation before I ever go on a morning run. Breakfast, morning coffee, the sports page and well…you know what happens after morning coffee and the sports page. My dog doesn’t know it’s

supposed to eat or take care of business; she just heads out the door. 4. Because dogs don’t have coffee or read the sports page, having to “go” literally hits them out of nowhere, somewhere along the trail. And if you’ve ever spent any time on the trail, you know that when a dog has to “go,” everyone sees it coming EXCEPT the person running with the dog. 5. In Austin, a run can take place in a variety of weather conditions, from 35 degrees to 105 degrees. I have gear for all such occasions, rain or shine. My dog, on the other hand, is ready to go, wearing the exact same thing every single time. So, I would like to take this moment to thank Roxy and all the other Austin dogs like her. I appreciate that you never seem to have bad days. You never say no when offered to go for a run. Unlike my friends, you’re always ready on time. I appreciate that you go fast when I want to go fast, you walk when I want to walk and you pass on so many squirrels you’d rather be chasing. Oh, and thanks for the clean-up job on my salty legs and the happy spin dance you do when I pull out my running shoes.
