OFF-SEASON MYTHS:

PUBLISHER’S LETTER

FOR THE LOVE OF HEALTH AND FITNESS We hear a lot about the

importance of making healthy lifestyle changes. But if you seriously want to be healthy and fit, you have to commit to a comprehensive approach blending attitude, education, motivation and behavior. Not an easy road in today’s world, particularly when walked alone. Now there’s a fair amount of evidence suggesting the importance of positive relationships and social support in adopting long-term behavior change. All you have to do is ask anyone who recently lost weight or learned a new skill. Invariably they’ll tell you they couldn’t have done it without the support of their family, friend, mentor or coach. Even issues like recovering from an accident or illness are often credited to the support of loved ones. So what’s going on here? Well, it turns out that one’s emotional state has a lot to do with one’s health. On the physical side, neuro-chemical changes brought on by feelings of love or well-being can literally alter our physiology. And of course, relationships bring a slew of psychological consequences to the forefront. We have the usual suspects of conformity and personal acceptance to the more complex change-agents like reinforcement, self-esteem and social norms. Both science and common sense tell us that our relationships impact our own health, yet this can easily be a double-edged sword. If the relationship is a positive one, the results can be extraordinary; on the other hand, a failed relationship can do irreparable harm. It’s probably no accident that romantics long ago coined the phrase, “dying of a broken heart.” From a preventive health perspective there’s never been more need for positive reinforcement than now. If for no other reason than the inertia’s going the wrong way. Whether it’s high health care costs, chemically-laden foods or childhood obesity, government and the private sector have been largely impotent in reversing the trends. Basically, our culture is aligned to create unhealthy norms and outcomes, so the results are not all that surprising. So what’s the bottom line? Well, it’s pretty simple: as individuals, we must create a new health reality. We need to pay attention and educate ourselves, then reach out to others and provide support. We must use our relationships to help our friends, family and those who need it most. We should demand healthy products and services from our society and use our relationships to help build and influence health policy. It’s our responsibility and our opportunity. Time is running out. I can think of few expressions of love more meaningful than helping others achieve health and wellness in their lives. Each of us has the chance to offer this most precious gift to all those in need. We just need to try!

Keep Austin Fit,

CRUNCHES FLATTEN YOUR STOMACH, CARDIO BURNS BODY FAT AND OTHER FITNESS MYTHS...

DEBUNKED We Give You The Facts Behind 10 Fitness Fallacies... by Kelsey Menzel

D

o abs for a flat stomach, but not too many or you’ll lose all your flexibility! Never eat before a workout, but don’t eat after either…especially if you exercise at night! If you’re like many of us who’ve heard these rudimentary “rules” of fitness, it can be tough to tell fact from fiction. The best way to stay ahead of the hype is to educate yourself. Here we’ve taken 10 tall tales to task to help you see the light. Check out these common fitness myths — DEBUNKED.

12 | February 2011 | a u s t i n f i t m a g a z i n e . c o m

#1

MYTH: LOTS OF ABDOMINAL EXERCISES WILL FLATTEN YOUR STOMACH.

Unfortunately, this is not necessarily true. Sit-ups and crunches will strengthen your abdominal muscles when done correctly, but to burn actual fat, you must burn calories. Once the fat is gone, you’ll see more stomach muscle. Crunches and sit-ups will tone up your stomach when combined with fat reduction, but they won’t do all of the work necessary for washboard abs.

#2

MYTH: WOMEN WHO LIFT WEIGHTS WILL GET BULKY MUSCLES. Testosterone is necessary to really bulk up, and because women’s testosterone levels are much lower than their male counterparts, they usually don’t gain bulky muscles. That said, women benefit from weight lifting in a number of ways. Because osteoporosis develops from bones weakened with old age, women who experience bone growth from weight lifting are less likely to suffer from this disease. They also lose weight and note a strengthened immune system from pumping iron.

MYTH: EATING LATE AT NIGHT WILL MAKE YOU GAIN WEIGHT.

Most people believe this myth that meals eaten after 8 p.m. are guaranteed to add fat. Well, not so fast. The truth is that your metabolism never shuts down, and your body still uses fuel at night to ready itself for the day ahead. It’s especially important to give your body post-8 p.m. fuel if you’re a night-time exerciser. Just make sure you’re choosing healthy foods like good fats, proteins and hearty vegetables.

#3

#4 MYTH: RUNNING ON A TREADMILL PUTS LESS STRAIN ON YOUR KNEES THAN RUNNING ON PAVEMENT. Sadly,

there is no way out of joint stress for runners. Joint pain occurs anytime your body experiences a surface it isn’t used to; it’s the weight of your body pounding on your joints that causes the stress, not the surface you’re running on. The best way to avoid joint stress is to vary your workouts. Try mixing up your running with other cardio activities, like swimming, an exercise bike or the elliptical. It’s the best way to save your knees from constant stress.

MYTH: SQUAT EXERCISES ARE BAD FOR THE KNEES.

Well, squats can hurt your knees when you do them incorrectly. But so can almost any exercise or anything that requires a repetitive motion. So when you’re doing it wrong, it puts dangerous strain on the wrong places. When done correctly, squats are a great way to work out your glutes and thighs. If you’re new to squatting, start with light weight and increase progressively to ease your knee muscles into the exercise. Then, with your feet shoulder-width apart, bend until your legs are at knee level. Hold for a second or two, stand up slowly and repeat.

#6

MYTH: SUPPLEMENTATION IS A MUST.

While it’s tempting to think you’re getting a balanced diet by taking lots of vitamins, you must try to include all foods, vitamins and minerals naturally in your diet to stay healthy. Your body benefits most from getting these nutrients from food. In fact, most supplements are difficult to absorb without food and standard multi-vitamins are often urinated out a couple hours after ingestion. It doesn’t hurt to take a supplement or two, but in general, you should avoid becoming a walking pill bottle.

Group trAiNiNG studio

HARDCORE

#7 MYTH: A LOT OF LOW INTENSITY CARDIO IS THE MOST EFFICIENT WAY TO LOSE BODY FAT. Many people

think that lots of cardio is the answer to unwanted body fat. While cardio should always be considered in a weight-loss plan, it’s actually not the most effective way to get you to your desired weight. This myth probably started with the “fat-burning zone” found on most cardio machines. But the fact is that burning fat depends on caloric balance, meaning that it’s necessary to burn more calories than you consume throughout the week. Spending 20 to 30 minutes at a low speed (i.e. the fat-burning zone) just doesn’t cut it. In fact, coupling your cardio with a comprehensive weight training program is the best way to burn calories all day…and ultimately shed unwanted body fat.

#8

ZenRide #10 photo by Brian Fitzsimmons

MYTH: YOU SHOULDN’T EAT RIGHT BEFORE A WORKOUT. It’s common to think that you’ll burn

more fat by exercising on an empty stomach. After all, if no food is available, your body has to reach for excess fat, right? The truth is, if your goal is to get or maintain a fit physique, there’s nothing wrong with eating before your workout. Though your body will likely reach into fat reserves, without proper fuel in your stomach, you’re unlikely to feel energetic enough to get in a proper workout. Obviously you should avoid a huge meal before exercising, but eating a small meal of protein and carbohydrates a few hours before, then a small carbohydrate snack about half an hour after your workout will do you wonders.

#9

MYTH: UNUSED MUSCLE WILL TURN TO FAT.

Fat doesn’t turn into muscle, and muscle doesn’t turn into fat. When muscles are contracted, they burn fat. So if you use your muscles less, you’ll burn less fat and it may seem like your old muscles turned to jiggle. But building muscle and losing fat are separate processes and rarely occur simultaneously.

MYTH: BUILDING MUSCLES REDUCES FLEXIBILITY.

This can be true, but only if you’re not going through the full range of motion when you strength train. If you’re performing your exercises correctly, then lifting weights actually increases flexibility. If you need convincing, check out Olympic sprinters — despite looking like body builders, they have the flexibility of gymnasts. afm

HOW YOUR DIET CAN HELP YOU...

Lose Your {Love Handles{ by KELSEY MENZEL

I

n spite of the technical mumbo jumbo that’s involved with naming parts of the human body — or maybe because of it — we’ve all come up with paltry pet names for our most hated parts. Take the funny bone, for example. What exactly is that anyway? Or how about love handles — our most despised bits of skin that collect around our waists? This has to be the biggest misnomer of all. While we can easily spend hours at the gym trying to eliminate even the slightest hints of fat, what we should be focusing on is what we’re putting on our plate. Because when you’re trying to kick love handles out completely, you have to make changes to your diet. So in keeping with our Valentine’s Day “love” theme, here’s a list of simple dietary tips to help you call it quits with your love handles, for good.

MEATLESS MONDAYS

A

pledge that’s as simple as it sounds, 2010 was huge for Meatless Monday, reaching restaurants, schools and responsible eaters nationwide. Cutting out meat just one day a week will not only decrease your saturated fat and cholesterol intake, but you’ll spend less money on what’s often the most expensive item at the grocery store. Plus, you’ll reduce your risk of high blood pressure. And cutting out

meat forces you to try new, healthy recipes, too. Visit meatlessmondays.com to find delicious meatless menu items like Barley Risotto and Polenta Pizza. On other days, be sure to keep an eye on the type of meat you do eat; your body will benefit from Meatless Monday more if you eat meat devoid of hormones and antibiotics the rest of the week. Look for free-range and grass-fed meats at your grocery store.

PRESERVE YOUR GOODS BY CANNING

W

hen your garden starts to bloom, take up canning to get the most out of the abundance of fresh vegetables you’ll have each week. Stored foods may seem like an unhealthy option, but canned homegrown vegetables are healthier than the processed, sodium-laden alternative found in grocery stores. Come next winter, after a season of canning (or anytime you don’t have time to make it to the store), you can pop open a jar of your own vegetables for a hearty stew or a healthy side dish.

ebruary may seem early for a garden, but late winter is the perfect time to start growing your own food. Austin’s mild climate is ideal for almost every plant, including sweet potatoes, tomatoes and onions. Map out an area in your backyard or get someone to go in on a plot in one of Austin’s community gardens and start bringing your food from the ground to the table. couple of glasses A of wine or beer after work may seem

like a harmless way to unwind, but when you consider that a 12-ounce beer contains an average of 149 calories while red wine averages 80 calories per four ounces, you find that those relaxing drinks actually equal thousands of extra calories a week. Because alcohol doesn’t contain any vitamins or nutrients, these empty calories translate into extra padding around your waist, which might make you reconsider those “relaxing” drinks. Try substituting lower calorie options, like diet or club soda for mixed drinks and light beer instead of regular, which usually has about 100 fewer calories.

Our lifelong goal is to continue to inspire, encourage and help others fulfill their health and fitness aspirations, just as we’ve done with each other.

DIANNE and MARC FERGUSON taying fit is certainly a lifestyle S for us — in fact, a day rarely goes by when we’re not running the trail,

training in the gym or stand-up paddle boarding. If we can find a way to make something active and fun, we will. As a personal trainer and lululemon athletica ambassador, I’ve been in the fitness industry for more than 25 years, teaching group fitness classes at The Hills Fitness Center and training clients at Wild Basin Fitness. Marc, on the other hand, has competed in several triathlons and most recently returned to playing squash. As a couple, we’ll be celebrating 30 years of marriage this year, and can’t recall a time when we weren’t active together — either as multisport athletes in school, snow skiing, water skiing, swimming or biking with our two daughters, Brittany, 26, and Ashleigh, 23. Now empty-nesters, we’ve moved downtown to enjoy an even more active lifestyle — walking, running, riding our bikes and participating in as many local running events as we can fit into our busy schedules. Our new goal is to be among Austin’s fittest at age 80.

forensic evaluations, recruiting, mentoring youth, drug counseling, coaching, patient care, completing a doctorate degree and building a private practice. These all demand hours and hours of face time, leaving us physically drained by the end of the day. Perhaps our biggest challenge is giving equally to all of these demands without letting our fitness suffer. This year, we’ve managed to keep it all in check and achieved tremendous gains as a result; including a combined 17 percent body fat reduction, while hanging with the best in the sport of CrossFit. The greatest lesson we’ve learned, however, is that we don't have to be a part of the fitness industry to have the body of a trainer or perform at our peak potential. Though it’s a constant struggle to stay committed, we've made a pledge to each other to stay in tune physically, mentally and professionally. We've experimented with making healthier decisions and focused on a fitter lifestyle as the cohesive part of our relationship. We hold each other accountable, support, compete and believe in each other. It's like we both have a personal trainer with us at all times!

TRICIA and CHARLES MINNICK e aren’t personal trainers W and we don’t work out for a living; we’re just average people.

So average, in fact, that like most Americans we found ourselves pretty overweight. We had our excuses for gaining extra weight — we chose convenience and immediate gratification over healthy living. And when we became parents, our bad habits continued. So, it’s no surprise that at 278 pounds it was difficult for me to keep up with my son. Our wake-up call was realizing what a bad example we were setting for our own child. Our life and our health were spiraling out of control. Our son deserved better, and so did we. Determined to set a healthy example, we started making changes. We committed to eating fresh, nutritious foods. Along with making better food choices, we started working out together. As the pounds came off, we started running, trained for, and eventually ran a full marathon. Already, we’ve lost more than 150 pounds collectively (I’ve lost 128 pounds and Charles has lost 30). We’ve conquered obesity, but more importantly, we found a new, healthy lifestyle, together.

TAMMY WALTERS and DINA JACKSON ’ve been a casual runner and IWhile cyclist since the early 90s. I was busy exercising,

Dina’s idea of a workout was walking in and out of stores on Fifth Avenue in New York City. This was before she moved to Austin eight years ago and we started jogging and cycling together. Since then, we’ve participated in numerous local cycling and running events. We love to see each other progress physically, whether it’s running a mile, doing half marathons or completing 70-mile bike rides. We both decided to give triathlons a try in May of 2009 and this year our goal is to complete a half Ironman together. We definitely integrate fitness into our daily lives by selecting events that require a training program for accountability. For example, we’re doing the MS150, Ragbrai and several triathlons this season. We also just have fun together and try not to make every activity a structured workout. In between our regular fitness, there are many walks and hikes with our dog, bike rides to the local coffee shop, kayaking at Pure Austin and our new hobby, roller skating.

JESSICA SHARRATT and RYAN STEPHEN e’ve been together for W more than eight years now, and recently got engaged

over the 2010 holiday season. Throughout our relationship, fitness has been a top priority, and we’ve challenged ourselves

to adapt workout programs to accommodate the demands of work and our lifestyles. I’m currently a CrossFit coach, competitive athlete with CrossFit Central, and recently launched my own company — Strength and Beauty. Ryan is an ex-collegiate football player, who now works in technical consulting sales, but has stayed fit over the years by blending strength training, running and

various CrossFit programs into his workout routine. We both have demanding careers, and unfortunately most days don’t allow us to workout with each other. But there are those opportunities we do spend together training — running at Town Lake, hitting a CrossFit workout or taking our dog Kane to the park. Those are some of our favorite times together.

ADRIEN RUDESAL and LANDON ADAMS ur love for each other and for fitness goes way beyond every day workouts. O For us, it’s a way of life that revolves around coaching and guiding others in the same direction we see for ourselves. After meeting at the gym almost six years ago, we quickly learned how much passion and love of life we had in common. Not long after, we decided to make our relationship official by opening our very own CrossFit training gym. The running joke is that my engagement ring came in the form of a 2,000-square foot training facility we now call our office. At CrossFit Round Rock, we spend countless hours building a health and fitness family. We push ourselves to the limit with each and every workout and will stop at nothing to be the best we can possibly be. When we aren’t flipping tires or working on Olympic lifts, we love to cook, relax with each other and spend time with our dogs.

PAUL and SHEILA CARROZZA itness, and running specifically, have always been an F instrumental part of who we are — personally, with our work and now at home with the kids. There’s no doubt in our

minds that the family unit is the most powerful fitness force possible. So, as a couple, we’ve made it a priority to be on the move on a daily basis and to eat only healthy, wholesome foods. (For example, we work hard to have an 80/20 diet; which is 80 percent plant-based.) As parents, if we require the daily discipline of being an athlete and living by example, we know our kids will be strong in the modern environment. Together we’ve taken on the responsibility of making healthy food choices and requiring real daily workouts, not only to maintain our own health, but to strengthen the health of our family. Instilling what it takes to maintain a high quality of life and maximizing your natural talents is what it’s all about.

LISA and JEREMY THIEL ur love story was built on the trails of Town O Lake when we met at a workout under the MoPac Bridge in 2006. It continued from there

as our paths crossed at RunTex, local 5Ks and triathlons. It was as if Austin’s original fit couple — Paul and Sheila Corrozza — set the stage for us! Today, we’re both active athletes and CrossFit competitors. We’ve each placed in the top three, of the elite division, at multiple CrossFit

competitions and regularly take on marathons, 5Ks and relay races together. Along with CrossFit Central co-founder Carey Kepler, we own and operate CrossFit Central, CrossFit Central RunTex and Relentless Boot Camp. Not surprisingly, among our most profound contributions is empowering other couples and families to get fit. It’s so rewarding to look around and see all of the couples and families who’ve been brought together through fitness. We hope to continue to help hundreds of people realize their true potential and reach their goals inside and outside of the gym.

NATE and KRISTEN TURNER e met 20 years ago at Pepperdine W University in Malibu, California. Kristen was a Division I swimmer and I captained the

Waves’ club soccer team, while working as a lifeguard. We got married in Kona, Hawaii and then settled in Austin in 1994. For the past 16 years, we’ve had a constant presence in the Austin fitness industry; Kristen, as a two-time Ironman finisher and former world champion at the Olympic distance in triathlon, and myself as an avid mountain biker and wilderness guide. As PowerBar Team Elitesponsored athletes, we now balance our love

of training and competition with a passion for helping young people make the most of their athletic potential through a program called Sport Speed Austin. Together we offer private instruction for athletes across a variety of sports, run speed and agility camps for teams and small groups, and offer spring and fall developmental and competitive swimming programs. Fitness has transcended our personal lives into something that gives us joy each and every day. Our personal definition of fitness incorporates so much more now that we are parents, coaches and athletes all at the same time. We strive for balance in life in the way we train and coach: mental, spiritual and physical fitness for ourselves and those we’re privileged to work with. afm

The Art of An Amorous Relationship by NATALIE ZISKIND

Love —

the concept permeates every aspect of our culture. Love and relationships are the subjects of songs, poems, movies and books. And not surprisingly, a prime topic of discussion in most people’s lives. In fact, love is so potent, its effects have been compared to that of a drug. ¶ But our love of the opposite sex can often become a feisty, contentious gender battle. As if maintaining a relationship and understanding the opposite sex wasn’t complicated enough, it turns out that for a plethora of reasons — from cultural and physical to psychological and evolutionary — the game of love can get pretty darn tricky. ¶ More and more research suggests basic differences between how men and women view, perceive and show love. Fortunately, we all seem to want the same thing in the end — mutual attraction and a love that embodies “oneness” and a sense of “wholeness.” Furthermore, research tells us that men and women not only both want love, but describe it in many of the same ways. ¶ Today, when it comes to understanding this bewildering topic, there’s information overload, offered by every sort of expert — celebrities and marriage counselors to psychologists and theologians. But here we present some new insights that might get you closer to making your year a little more lovely.

Women WANT (TOP 5)

42 | February 2011 | a u s t i n f i t m a g a z i n e . c o m

ACCORDING TO THE EXPERTS, THE RECIPE FOR ROMANCE INCLUDES FIVE BASIC THINGS FOR BOTH MEN AND WOMEN. MAKE YOUR BOND MORE BOUNTIFUL AND SPICE UP YOUR LOVE LIFE A BIT BY FOLLOWING THESE TOP TIPS…

(#1)

S

Listening

usie just won’t stop blabbing. Tom just doesn’t listen. Sound familiar? One of the keys in navigating the differences between men and women is understanding and accepting the different communication styles of each gender. According to psychology and communication researchers, most women prefer to deal with stress by talking and expressing their concerns verbally, while men tend to seek solid solutions to problems. Dr. John Gray, famous communications and relationship expert and author of “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus,” cites this issue as one of the most common misconceptions that create tension between men and women in relationships. “When a woman is talking about the problems of her day, rather than assuming she’s looking for solutions and then offering them, a man can instead recognize that she’s just needing to talk about her day and as a result will feel better,” he says. So, when a women vents — about her day at work, issues with the kids or even what her friends are up to — the important thing to realize is that she’s not expecting some kind of miraculous solution from her male counterpart. She just wants you to listen. And this doesn’t mean the “uh huh, yes dear” kind of listening will be enough. Research shows that women need to sense their mate is being supportive, understanding and engaged. So for you guys out there: be attentive and ask questions. Don’t interrupt with solutions or mindlessly agree. She’ll see right through it.

(#2)

I

Kissing

t may sound trivial, but throughout time and across cultures, continents and history, kissing has been one of the most valued signs of

affection. Whether it’s a passionate kiss served up with virility and exuberance, or a gentle, affectionate smooch, it turns out that a good kiss can go a long way with the female gender. In fact, studies have found that the stress hormone, cortisol, is actually reduced during kissing, and that the act itself helps relieve anxiety. According to Cindy Meston and David Buss, sexuality and evolutionary psychologists at the University of Texas, kissing can reveal vital information about how a woman chooses her mate. From an evolutionary perspective, “Kissing conveys information about status, since bad breath can be a sign of disease or ill-health,” Meston and Buss write in their book, “Why Women Have Sex: Understanding Sexual Motivations — From Adventure to Revenge (and Everything in Between).” But there seems to be a relatively large gap between how the sexes value a kiss. In their research, Meston and Buss found that women are much more likely than men to see a kiss as an “emotional litmus test,” helping them determine whether the relationship should continue and even contributing to their decision to consummate the relationship with sexual intercourse. In one of their studies they found that 53 percent of men said they would have sex without kissing while only 15 percent of women felt similarly. So never underestimate the power of a good kiss, and remember guys — practice makes perfect!

Confidence, Ambition & Status T (#3)

here was a time, back in the early days of humanity, when a man’s physical prowess, healthy genes and ability to protect his offspring were crucial to survival. In many ways these early instincts still shape the way women seek mates,

but recent studies show how some of these ideals have evolved as society has become healthier and more egalitarian. Compared to men, research finds that women view appearance more subjectively and place less importance on physicality than power, status and resources. The definition of status, however, varies amongst women. Whether it’s the mystique of a rock and roller or high-powered business executive, ambition and confidence often indicate status and intellectual dominance, key criteria for attracting the modern woman. According to Meston and Buss, personality is another major turn-on, as is a sense of humor, both of which indicate robust intelligence. In fact, in a 2008 poll by researchers at the University of Iowa, women ranked both ambition and intelligence above good looks.

(#4)

A

Respect & Devotion

ccording to Gray, care, respect and devotion are at the top of the charts when it comes to the emotional needs of a woman. This may sound obvious enough, but actually being attuned to these needs takes a lot of thought and attention. Much of that has to do with figuring out your lover’s “love language.” In his book, “The Five Love Languages,” marriage and family life consultant Gary Chapman outlines what he believes to be the five primary expressions of love for any person. Whether it’s “quality time,” “words of affirmation,” “physical touch,” “receiving gifts” or “acts of service,” Chapman contends that every man and woman wants to receive love primarily in one of these languages. So, if it’s surprising her with a bouquet of flowers for no particular reason, or interrupting your busy schedule to have lunch together, take the time to understand and speak her love language. Without question, your care, respect and devotion will be appreciated. T h e A r t o f A n A m o r o u s R e l a t i o n s h i p | Lifestyle | 43

Conversation

t seems men and women are just hardwired differently. And the research proves it. For example, a study led by University of California, Irvine psychology professor Richard Haier found that men use more of their brain’s gray matter, while women use more white matter to process information. This doesn’t mean one sex is more intelligent than the other, but that physical differences may help explain the different strategies men and women use when communicating. For example, men more often use the left side of their brain and prefer to solve one problem at a time. Women, on the other hand, tend to have greater access to both sides of the brain and employ multiple language centers simultaneously, suggesting a preference for solving problems through speech and multiple

activities. According to research by language expert Deborah Tannen, this helps explain why women excel at linguistics and primarily use conversation to form connections with others. For women, sharing feelings is one of the hallmarks and defining features of emotional intimacy. According to Lisa Diamond, professor of psychology and gender studies at the University of Utah, deep intimacy is imperative to women, and may actually be a driving impetus for stimulating romantic desire. Diamond’s research and analysis of animal mating and women’s sexuality has found that oxytocin, a neurotransmitter only found in mammals (and curiously more prevalent in females), facilitates feelings of trust and wellbeing. This may be a clue to understanding why emotional intimacy, meaningful conversation and sexual desire are so strongly connected in women. continued on page 46

Space W (#1)

hen a woman is upset she craves the attention of someone who loves and cares for her. Or simply listens. So wouldn’t it just figure that for most men the opposite is true. According to Gray’s research, men instinctually retreat in times of stress. The important thing to recognize here is that silence shouldn’t be taken personally or as a sign of rejection. “Silence is most easily misinterpreted by women,” Gray says. “Depending on how she’s feeling that day she may begin to imagine the very worst — ‘he hates me, he doesn’t love me, he is leaving me forever.’” No need to get so dramatic ladies. Silence doesn’t mean he doesn’t care or that he’s bent on ignoring the situation. It simply indicates the different ways in which men and women think and process information. Instead of talking as a means of understanding or discovery, most men need time to internally focus on the information at hand before they’re willing to express themselves verbally. Allowing a man enough time to think, reflect, find his own solutions, rediscover himself and even connect with his more intimate side is critical to fostering a healthy relationship between the sexes.

(#2)

I

Sex

t comes as no surprise that physical touch is a powerful communicator of love and emotion. When someone is sad or distressed, what do we do? We give them a hug. Happy or excited? Hug. From handshakes to pats on the back, a physical touch can be worth a thousand words. Even research in the field of child development reveals that nurturing touch is critical to the health of infants and young children.

46 | February 2011 | a u s t i n f i t m a g a z i n e . c o m

Expressing love through touch can be accomplished in many ways, and while both genders enjoy the act of sexual intercourse, a wealth of research shows that sex is a primary communicator of love for most men. In a study conducted by Meston and Buss at the Buss Evolutionary Psychology Lab at the University of Texas, researchers asked 100 women and 100 men to think of couples they knew who were in love. They were then asked to list five acts or behaviors that demonstrated this love. The results revealed a fascinating difference between the genders. Only eight percent of women listed “having sex” as an act of love compared to 32 percent of men. “Although women are more likely to see love as a prerequisite for sex, men appear to be more likely to see sex as a defining feature of love,” Meston and Buss explain. Not surprisingly, Chapman also identifies physical touch as one of the five primary ways love is communicated in relationships. So, for a man whose primary love language is physical touch, sex may be an especially important way to show him you care and are committed to the relationship.

(#3)

I

Appearance & Health

t may be the ugly truth, but research finds that appearance ranks extremely high among men when looking for a mate. Whether subconscious, evolutionary or cultural, outward appearance is the initial, and at times defining criteria by which men judge women. Just as the need for health and strength to provide for one’s family are basic instincts that drive women to men, beauty — a symmetrical face and body features, clear skin and an hour glass figure — seem to be inherent symbols of a woman’s health and fertility to a man. A study conducted by Claudia Brumbaugh of Queens College found that even today, appearance is more highly valued among men

than among women. Granted, images of beauty vary among cultures. Studies find that where food is scarce, larger, more voluptuous women are hailed as beautiful. In cultures where food is in abundance, stick-thin bodies have become the standard of beauty. Preferences vary according to the individual as well, yet what remains universally recognized, is the effort of taking pride in your appearance. The evolutionary legacy of big eyes and lips and a shapely physique as indicators of healthy genes still persists, but today making healthy eating choices and exercising (whether it’s a walk around the park or running a marathon) may indicate to a man that a woman is beautiful, both inside and out.

(#4)

T

Trust & Admiration

rust is an important aspect of any relationship. In fact, most men and women will tell you that it’s a critical aspect of any committed relationship. According to Gray, however, trust is of crucial importance to men’s emotional needs, just as caring and emotional intimacy is tantamount for women. Without trust, requests become nags, suggestions turn into criticisms, and before long feelings of inadequacy and resentment ensue. Trust can come in different forms, however. And with it, a man may feel more accepted. Instead of trying to change her man, a woman can decide to trust his ability to make decisions and improvements. With trust comes appreciation, admiration and encouragement, all of which Gray lists as primary emotional needs for men. Whether it’s admiration for their talent, creativity, intelligence, skills or sense of humor, experts find that most men deeply desire a woman’s acceptance. And when he receives adequate admiration, he is in turn more likely to reciprocate the behavior.

Intimacy Through Shared Activities T (#5)

hough men may need time alone to deal with stress and think through their day, research shows that partaking in activities together can be a means of connecting closely with a male partner. So, while women may prefer to connect intimately by sharing feelings, desires and secrets, men put great importance on having a recreational companion — someone they can have fun with. According to marriage experts Dr. Leslie Parrot, co-author of “Saving Your Marriage Before it Starts,” men tend to be more achievement-focused and shared activities are a primary way for them to bond in a relationship. “A man connects by doing things together,” she explains. In Chapman’s book “The Five Love Languages,” he too hails the importance of “quality time.” The key difference is that quality time for a woman may be a nice chat over dinner, while a man may want to go to a football game, ski or garden together to build intimacy within the relationship. afm

PERSONAL TRAINING

W

e’re now well into the depths of the winter. This time of year, best known as the “off-season,” is not exactly what the name implies. Truth be told, the “off-season” is actually critical for setting up the foundation for your entire year. This is precisely why professional runners, cyclists and triathletes are out training hard, rather than sitting around getting out of shape. In this article, I’ll dispel some myths associated with off-season training. I’m not going to tell you this is the time where you should take a lot of time off, but instead, I’ll point to what the professionals are doing — which is training hard.

Media misnomers. I’ve discovered a common thread in running, triathlon and cycling magazines which is generally misleading. They all paint a picture of winter as a time to rest, relax and generally loaf around for the upcoming season. That way you can start the spring fresh and ready to train, right? Well, the problem is that if you hibernate during the winter, it’ll take you several months to get yourself back to your previous level of fitness in the spring. If your goal is to improve, winter is the time to work on your weaknesses and make marked physical gains. You can’t expect magical, spring time improvements if you haven’t put miles in during the winter. The myth of peaking too early. “I don’t want to peak too early” is not a strategy, it’s an excuse. Truthfully, it’s very difficult to achieve a real physiological peak. In fact, the vast majority of us don’t have enough time in the day to actually get there. Most athletes just train as much as they have time for, then taper for their main race. By training in the winter, however, you’re more at risk of mental burn-out later in the year. So gear your winter more towards the mental aspect of your training. This doesn’t mean repeating the same sessions you did during your peak phase, weeks prior to your last race. Your training should definitely be different, but don’t let fear of a February peak steer you away from working hard.

Get a VO2 max test during the winter months to assess your fitness and plan for the spring season.

It’s not just base-building time. The second winter fable people tend to perpetuate is that winter is your “basebuilding” time. An aerobic base is certainly an essential component of fitness, but too often people use this as an excuse to be lazy. many endurance professionals take about two weeks off. That’s it. Then they start training again. European cyclists and triathletes relocate to the Canary Islands, South Africa, Australia or wherever they can to train. North Americans relocate to the warmer climates as well. Professionals know better than anyone this is where next season’s foundation is built, so they’re out there putting in the miles. An Olympian friend of mine put it best, “Winter miles equal summer miles.” Recovery is still key. Despite what I’ve argued here about the value of continuing to train (and training hard) during the winter, rest and recovery is just as important as your workouts. Besides the physical need to recover, as I pointed out above, a mental break in the winter is essential. As always, you need to keep a close watch on your body, your mental state, and adjust your training and recovery accordingly. At the end of the day, this is perhaps what the top professionals know how to do best. afm

MONICA’S THOUGHTS

M

y ZenRide at Workshop Fitness was one of the first real workouts I had after the fun holidays and a recent surgery with top Austin doctor, Dr. Robert Clement. Since early December, I hadn’t done much with regard to fitness; however, after the busy year, the break was good for me. Upon walking into the studio, I noticed it was clean and very open. This is something I definitely take note of because it’s a great feeling when you want

photos by BRIAN FITZSIMMONS

to exercise indoors. The AFM team was there and they were making last-minute decisions on the set up. I was introduced to two very fit ladies, one of whom was Mariesa Osterhaus, who would be my trainer and ultimately kick my butt! To aid in my torture Mariesa had asked another trainer, Erin, to ride along with us. We began our ZenRide and Mariesa started with an easy warm-up and some light upper body stretches as we pedaled.

Thanks to lululemon athletica for the apparel for this month’s workout and to Hair Angel for hair design.

Mariesa stepped it up for sure.

ve Life Stay Fit, Lo ss U! le and God B -Mo

Even though I’m usually not a fan of indoor cycling, the ride was really quite exhilarating. I’m sure the workout had more charm to it because Mariesa brought in the upper body workout, too. Aside from the sprinting and climbing intervals, all the exercises focused on shoulders, triceps, biceps and chest. It helped me forget about the pedaling and made the workout more fun. Mariesa was a great instructor who was very motivating and encouraging. I would recommend this location to

anyone looking for a fun, new way to cycle indoors. As I was leaving I noticed the room had lifting bars all the way around. Maybe one of my next sessions I will get to try the Bar Method! Mariesa, thanks for getting me back into my workouts. My legs were a little sore but the upper body felt good and worked without being over-stressed starting up again. It was the perfect session and yes, I did get my butt kicked. afm

THE FUNNY SIDE OF FIT

What is “The Funny Side of Fit”? Every month JB Hager takes a humorous slant on a different topic, sharing his experiences and funny fitness follies

Not Looking for Adventure by

JB Hager

A

S I’VE MENTIONED MANY TIMES BEFORE, MY WIFE AND I TRY to keep our fitness lives separate. It just seems to work for us. I’ve never seen her do Pilates and I oblige her by leaving the room during hip/hop abs. We occasionally run together, but only when we’re on vacation, which is rare. I bike race almost weekly and she’s seen me do it once. It was a downtown race and her girlfriends had secured a patio with cocktails. She claims she can’t identify me in the sea of random cyclists anyway.

As I’m sure you know, Austin is a ridiculously fit city. All of our friends are into one thing or another. We’re constantly invited to some kind of social sporting event, like the December flag football game that sent me to the ER with a pulled abdominal muscle. To be honest, I didn’t even know I had one of those. It seems every year we get recruited to participate in a new, bizarre event with an outrageous title like, “Urban Survival Adventure Wilderness Mudfest War Game Death Race.” Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not picking on these races. I actually think they’re great. They just appeal to a demographic that has a far more twisted sense of adventure than mine. My wife is 66 | February 2011 | a u s t i n f i t m a g a z i n e . c o m

lovely; I have no desire to see her crawling through mud or singing karaoke on a city bus. Those are visions of my bride I don’t prefer. Besides, like I said, we tend to keep our fitness personal. The best I can tell, these races are getting more and more extreme. In the beginning, they were just trail runs that ended with a mud party. They’ve now graduated to exhausting, all-day scavenger hunts with people repelling from the Frost Bank Tower as the finale. All of this begs the question: How far are Austinites willing to go in the name of competition? My wife and I just declined one race that looked oddly similar to a day of Army boot camp. I’ve managed 43 years

without any military presence in my life…and I would like to keep that going. I’ll admit, my wife’s big ‘ole Texas-sized breasts tangled up in barbed wire would be a YouTube sensation, but we prefer to spend our weekends in the comfort of our slippers. Despite our preference for solitary exercise, staying on the sidelines of these “adventure” races is no easy task. It’s not just that our friends inquire; it’s also because these events are targeting couples more and more. I’ve heard rumblings of one race, which makes you mug an elderly person and kidnap a city councilman for a minimum of three days. And another one that requires you to go to the courthouse and actually divorce your spouse, then remarry another contestant inside of 24 hours. To each his own, I wish you “adventure” racers well. As a married man of more than 12 years — which seems like a long time these days — I prefer to keep my adventures to myself, and my wife can do the same. I’ll meet her when it’s all over, after the shower and hopefully not in the ER.

JB Hager can be heard on the JB and Sandy Morning Show from 6 to 10 a.m. on Mix 94.7 and seen on KEYE 42 from 5 to 7 a.m. weekday mornings.
