SkySculpture AWARDS: 1st place DLR Group Competition PARTNERS: Taylor Hess, Connor Gatzke, Yiqi Zhao SUMMA SUMMARY: SkySculpture embeds itself into the heart of the “Tenderloin� district in San Francisco. The goal for this project was too interpret what neomonumentality was and how it can be implimented within architecture today. Through movement, learning, and interaction with drone technology, SkySculpture fosters a unique identity for the future of the industry. It acts as an epicenter for a young technology that is generally forced to adapt to existing environments. Where stadiums and arenas are typically refitted for drone racing events, SkySculpture is designed specifically with drones in mind. Now, the environment has adapted to the drone.

URBEX AWARDS: 1st place CSI Competition and Bussard Competition Finalist PARTNERS: Josh Cobler, Luke Keeble SUMMARY: URBEX was created as a building that contains SUMMA different atmospheric spaces and at moments blends them together, creating areas where two antithetical programs (rock climbing and thermal baths) can become one. A building where discovery and exploration become the cornerstone of how you interact and connect with the architecture. Urbex, characterized by its varying rectangular extrusions of channel glass, provides a hie wayfinding hierarchy and silhouettes the atmospheric spaces behind them. Providing an endless experience of discovery for the newly developed waterfront in Seattle.

IM_RU Pavilion RECOGNITION: Selected to be part of the 2017 ACADIA conference held at MIT PARTNERS: 14 Interdiciplinary Design Students SUMMARY: The IM_RU Pavilion was designed and built by fifteen SUMMA students majoring in architecture, landscape architecture, and interior design as part of an undergraduate spring studio. Constructed from 3D printed joints, mirrors, wires, and LEDs the pavilion was designed computationally to be structurally flexible, yet lightweight, and easy to assemble. The project was constructed in the studio and then transported 130 miles (210 km) and reassembled at the Flyover Fashion Festival. By blurring fashion, light, color, and design the fragmented reflections of the pavilion created a space to engage with the identity politics and activist undercurrents of the festival.

Ecology Center SUMMARY: The project focuses on site development and the building’s relation to site. In order to address these issues the service wing of the school is burrowed into an existing hill, allowing the learning wing of the Ecology School project to open up to the ISU arboretum as well as composing the building as an extension of the site. The built in green space allows the nature from the site to enter the building, creating an integral piece of the learning experience for students. Framed views from both the lab space and the classrooms maintain an ecological focus for students.

Stand Under PARTNER: Connor Gatzke SUMMA SUMMARY: We were tasked to design a Memorial Park Space in Iowa States University Campus with a focus on a new definition of (neo)-monumentality in open landscape. The memorial park was designed to commemorate those who gave their lives during World War One. Influenced highly by the trenches and pockmarks caused during the conflict, “Stand Under� works to provide an immersive understanding of WW1. The memorial park design is centered around how memory and place intersect the cen architecture and landscape design.
