You’re always welcome in Austin, Minnesota! Please accept this as a personal invitation to come and see just what makes Austin such a great city. Our SPAM® Museum is certainly worth the visit as so many folks have discovered from all around the world. But that’s not all Austin has to offer. Did you know we are home to Honda’s second oldest Honda Motorcycle dealership? This 60+ year continuously run family business is Trimble’s Honda. Another Austin gem is our longest running business – Knauer’s Meat Market in Downtown Austin. Stop in for STEVE King a blast from the past and leave with a bag Austin, MN Mayor of the best beef jerky ever made. While I mentioned just a couple of our unique local businesses, we have plenty more for you to discover and enjoy. Austin’s retail corridor and our downtown is vibrant all year long. We have so many exceptional locally owned restaurants, bars, lounges, and brew pubs to rest after walking or biking on our many miles of trails or after a quick workout at our amazing new Community Recreation Center. If you’re here to shop, please stop in and visit our unique and diverse stores created from the hard work and commitment from our wonderful immigrant community. These markets and dining experiences bring such richness to our city and are sure to give you that international experience you might not expect from Austin, MN. If you come to be inspired and learn, I invite you to stop in at the Hormel Institute. This institution partners with the University of Minnesota, Mayo Clinic, and Hormel and dates to the 1940’s. Their mission is to research, discover, and advance cancer treatments and hopefully find a cure for cancer. There is truly so much to see and do in Austin that you probably should make it more than a day trip and stay in one of our convenient, comfortable, and welcoming hotels. Enjoy Austin!

The Fox Hotel By Jamie Timm Mower County Historical Society In 1890, Charles Fox purchased the lot at 501 N. Main Street for $5,000. Construction on his new hotel began three years later. The home on the property (formerly occupied by the C. H. Davidson family) was moved to the north end of the lot and the Fox family used it as their residence. The original building, designed by architect Frank W. Kinney, was 50 feet wide on Main Street and ran 110 feet deep on Water Street. It was three stories high with a French mansard roof. It also had steam heat, electricity, toilets, and bath facilities “in the latest metropolitan style.” Charles furnished his hotel with items from local merchants. The grand opening was Oct. 23, 1894, and the dining room quickly established itself as one of the best eateries in Austin. Charles brought in three sisters from Iowa — Agnes, Beatrice, and Maggie — to be the cooks and waitresses. The menu featured boiled sugar-cured ham with champagne sauce, boiled salmon, prime rib, stuffed

A photograph of The Fox Hotel, ca. 1930-1940. turkey with cranberry sauce, roast wild duck, and brochette of chicken liver. Charles’ wife, Ida, also worked in the kitchen and canned pickles, jams, and jellies. The dining room’s delicious reputation quickly established the new hotel as a place where salesmen often dropped by and many where families came for a Sunday brunch. Charles and Ida’s children also worked at the hotel. Their daughter Katherine worked as a pastry cook, Charles, Jr. drove the Fox Hotel Bus to and from the railroad depot, and Irvin

worked as a bellhop and kept the brass spittoons clean. Charles, Sr. passed away in 1910 and Irvin took over the running of the hotel. Charles, Jr. ran the tobacco counter. He eventually converted it to a wholesale candy and tobacco business under the name “Chas. F. Fox and Co.” in 1913. Under Irvin’s management, the hotel doubled in size with the addition of a three-story wing to the north that also replaced the family home. Irvin died quite suddenly in 1938, and his brother, Charles, Jr. and his son, Robert took over the hotel. They added more parking, renovated the rooms, created suites, and added an automatic elevator in 1954 (one of only two in the downtown area of Austin). By 1958, the Austin community seemed to feel that the hotel had outlived its usefulness as discussions took place about a community owned hotel instead. The land was sold in 1960 to Norwest Bank Corp., but the hotel continued to operate under the direction of Robert’s sisters, Marion and Ruth. Robert moved to Santa Barbara, California. The hotel officially closed on Oct. 3, 1965, and it was demolished the following day. It eventually became Austin State Bank. Today, Wells Fargo stands where the old Fox Hotel used to live.

The Horseshoe Tour began pitching in 2009, the first event was held in Clearwater, Florida. The Horseshoe Tour is a competitive horseshoe pitching group that is affiliated with the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association and hosts four to six events each year. The Tour was originally named “The Pro Tour” as a means for those who would be considered professional carrying a pitching average of 60% or higher. Meaning out of 100 horseshoes thrown a player must at least make 60 ringers. Since then, “pro” has been dropped from the name, now “The Horseshoe Tour” encompassing everyone of all ages and averages! In the Tour only two distances are recognized, those pitching at 30’ and 40’. A player categorized by the NHPA’s divisions must pitch according to the distance provided in the Rules from the NHPA. Each player on the tour must be a member of the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association. The Tour format is quite different from that of a normal horseshoe tournament. In the since that on the tour, each game is 30 pitched shoes. The kicker… RINGERS ONLY! That’s right, you only get one point for a ringer, and no close shoes count. Close doesn’t count ANYMORE! The event is broken into two days of pitching. The first day is reserved as a qualifying day and player pitch six games. Depending on how you qualify on the first day determines your bracket for

the following day. As players are broken into bracket play of four. Players finishing 1-4 are “A” (championship bracket), players finishing 5-8 are “B” bracket and so on, until each player is seeded into a bracket. Pending on entries the tour can see payouts of over $10,000! The Tour has been to various locations across the US from the west in Saint George, Utah and Winnemucca, Nevada. To central US in North Platte, Nebraska. Down South in Buffalo and Bryan, Texas; across to Morgan City, Louisiana. A few states up in the south in Clarksville and Crossville, Tennessee. Up east to Erie, Pennsylvania; Waterloo, New York, Bristol, Vermont and working it’s way down the coast to Frederick, Maryland; Lowell, North Carolina; Various locations in South Carolina to include: Newberry, Clover, and Florence. Down to Florida in Clearwater and Flagler Beach. Coming in 2024, this is the first time the tour will be in the Central North, and in Minnesota. We are excited to be partnering with Discover Austin, Minnesota to bring our players and members to Minnesota! The twelve-court complex in Austin has the potential to bring 75-125 members to the Austin area. As Minnesota has one of the largest horseshoe pitching charters in the nation. LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

PRESENT

CEDAR RIVER RECREATION PARK There is a growing wave of interest throughout the country of transforming under-utilized or inaccessible rivers into treasured community assets. Austin could be home to the first urban whitewater park in Minnesota!

Established in 2011 as a state water trail, the Cedar River begins north of Austin, Minnesota and flows to southeast Iowa with over five miles of river flowing through the heart of Austin. The whitewater project creates a fun and dynamic place for recreational opportunities for all ages – kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, tubing, fishing, wading, and playing in the river. The project also achieves additional goals such as habitat improvement, enhanced fish migration, improved angler access, capitalizing on the river's natural features to help prevent future flooding and creates a place for the community to gather, host events, and enjoy nature. View drawings and learn about the whitewater proposal for the city's downtown dam on the Cedar River State Water Trail at the website of the citizen group leading the idea: www.austinmnwhitewater.com
