This year the IASP theme is the Global Year about Sex and Gender Disparities in Pain.

Prepare to have your mind blown on what is known about sex and gender differences in pain perception and modulation. Best of all, there is a call out for addressing sex and gender related disparities in both the research and treatment of pain.

Tick tock - time is ticking away, ensure you have registered for the 2024 Australian Pain Society 44th Annual Scientific Meeting before the early bird deadline of 27 February 2024. We are off to Darwin this year, so pack your swimmers (or togs) and summer clothes. There is also still time to share your late breaking abstract as well. A great opportunity to have your work showcased as a poster. Of course, the social program is a must do. It’s also great to see the Trainee Session on pick the brain of a pain researcher for higher degree and early career researchers is still available.

Want to catch up but cannot wait until the ASM? Then Newcastle and Brisbane APS social networking events have got you covered. Drop in and have a chat, meet new collegues and find out what is happening in your state/areas.

Dust off your new year resolution lists and consider adding some more from our FYI list. Here you will find numerous resources at your fingertips. The latest addition being the Arthritis Australia new suite of resources for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who are living with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and gout.

If your new year’s resolution was to contribute back to the pain community, look no further, we have got your back. There is a call out to join the APS Scientific Program Committee (SPC).

There are two opportunities, so don’t hesitate, get in quick. Also, the SPC scholar position is up for grabs. What a great idea and a golden opportunity for succession planning as well as mentorship.

No need to wait any longer to access the updated analysis of Waiting in Pain. Part two

by MacIntyre et al (2023) provides a sobering update on the multidisciplinary staffing and clinical activities within Australian specialist pain services. Check out the article and see for yourself if persistent pain services in Australia have reached an agreement regarding the ideal model of care and staffing mix required to deliver it. Then read the article by Ryan et al 2023 about how within all sectors of society there are widespread misconceptions not only on the nature of pain, but best current treatments for persistent pain.

Convenor’s Message Adjunct A/Prof Cindy Wall

The 2024 Australian Pain Society 44th Annual Scientific Meeting (APS 2024) is taking on a decidedly tropical flavour where a friendly and laid-back welcome awaits your arrival in Larrakia country/Darwin. You are invited to travel north and indulge your senses with a scientific program as rich and diverse as the dramatic landscapes, colourful street markets, and spectacular Top-End sunsets.

thought-provoking plenary where A/Professor Tasha Stanton asks us to consider perception versus reality in chronic pain, and Dr Nik Veldhuis poses the question of whether nanotechnology can overcome barriers to analgesic delivery.

Spend the afternoon exploring how we can do more, do better, and do it differently across a range of pain-related areas in the free paper and topical concurrent sessions.

With seven Pre-Conference Workshops on the Sunday, enjoy a smorgasbord of intellectual and clinical offerings. From Basic Pain Research, Pharmacology, or Physiotherapy in Pain Management, to Pain in Childhood, or the inaugural Psychology in Pain Management workshops, plus many more.

The Territory way to top off such an inspiring day of learning is to either spend some time up close and personal with a croc or two - at Crocosaurus Cove, or immerse yourself in the history of ANZAC Day at the RFDS Darwin Tourist Facility. Both are on offer in the optional social activities program and conclude with plenty of time to get into Territory Rig in preparation for the Gala Dinner.

End the day at the Welcome Reception – a perfect place to peruse the exhibition hall and catch up with others. It is then only a short stroll to Wharf One Food & Wine – amazing food, stunning views and fabulous dinner conversation for those attending the Basic Pain Research and Pain in Childhood SIG Dinner.

Start Monday with Sunrise Qi Gong and a lagoon swim before getting stuck into the first day of plenary sessions. Join formidable speakers: Dr Charlotte Elder, Dr Christine Chambers, and Professor Cheryl Stucky, plus many other leaders in the national and international pain community, who will highlight current knowledge, skill, and innovation in pain in the topical breakout sessions.

Learn about the unique experiences of working in Outback Pain Management from those at the coalface in the afternoon’s interactive panel discussion, then follow-up with picking the brains of a pain researcher at the Trainee Session. Finish the day by catching up with colleagues and making new friends at The Precinct Tavern.

Tuesday morning’s Sunrise Qi Gong and lagoon swim, precedes another amazing day showcasing more of the best of pain research, education, and practice. Opening with a 4

Wednesday is another not-to-be-missed line up – three fabulous plenaries, including awards recognising the exceptional contribution of emerging and established leaders in our field.

Dr Christine Chambers invites us to reimagine pain, while Dr Jane Chalmers invites us to understand pain science education for women with persistent pelvic pain. Professor Louise Sharpe will have us questioning mindfulness versus CBT in the management of pain.

Professor Helen Slater flips the pain care disparity lens in presenting AI-enabled solutions for young people; and finally, Professor Toby Newton-John takes us on a deeper dive into interpersonal relationships in chronic pain.

For those of you settling into a few extra days in NT, take advantage of the optional social activities, including a Gin Tasting at Charlie’s of Darwin!

I do hope you will join us in Darwin. Arrive a little early, and stay a little late - it will be a trip to remember.

VIC Social Networking Event

By Esther Dube, VIC Director & Laura Prendergast, Treasurer On 29 November 2023, a cosy crew of Victorian APS members met up for a social event at the beautiful ‘Yarra Botanica’ on the Yarra River. A mild Melbourne mist didn’t scare off our mixed group of physiotherapists, psychologists, medical, nursing and academics. Together we all laughed and chatted on all things about pain over some delicious wood fire pizzas and cocktails until well into the night. There was agreement that more is needed for patients who have pain, excitement about hearing of expansion of services into regional hospitals for the acute space, and the continued growth of already established services. There was significant interest on attending the APS ASM in Darwin, and promises to catch up during the event. The hope of this event is that the Victorian pain community can continue to network and support each other in an area of care that continues to grow.

Music Therapy for Chronic Pain Management

Music Therapy for Chronic Pain Management FREE Seminar!

5.30pm AEDT, Tuesday 20 February 2024 (via Zoom) The Australian Pain Society (APS) is delighted to introduce visiting scholar Dr Joke Bradt, Professor in the Department of Creative Arts Therapies at Drexel University (Philadelphia, USA) who will present on the use of music therapy for chronic pain management.

Dr Bradt will discuss how music therapy can contribute to effective pain management by addressing several biological, psychological, and social factors that exacerbate pain. Dr Bradt will also present findings of several research studies she has conducted with people with chronic pain.

This lecture is suitable for both health professionals and people with lived experience of pain.

There will be a 45 minute presentation followed by a 15 minute Q&A session.

The evening will moderated by Dr Laura Prendergast, APS Treasurer.

Australian Pain Society Scientific Program Committee

Invitation to Join The Scientific Program Committee (SPC) is a sub committee of the Australian Pain Society (APS) who organise the Annual Scientific Meetings (ASM). The SPC reports directly to the Board of the APS and consists of the Chair, plus members from basic and clinical research, and representatives across all the professional disciplines for whom pain management, pain research or pain education is a key focus.

The SPC is looking for TWO interested APS members to join the SPC, who can help guide the direction of the ASMs and ensure that all areas of pain are represented at Australia’s only multidisciplinary conference offering insights into the complex nature of pain, pain management and pain education.

To ensure the planning of the meeting meets the deadlines of the critical path

•

To ensure that the planning of the conference is in line with approved budgets

•

To review submitted topical sessions and submitted abstracts

The Purpose of the SPC is:

•

To assist with marketing the ASM and encourage attendance

•

To assist with securing sponsors and exhibitors

•

To be a collaborative team that will provide continuity of program from year to year

•

To ensure quality and diversity of the program to meet the interest and expectations of all members of the society

•

Ensure the breadth and depth of topics of national and international interest and importance

•

To provide historical perspective on meetings, including keeping records of previous speakers and major topic areas already covered in past meetings

•

To support the Convenor and Chair

Responsibilities of the SPC are:

To determine the overall program content, including the IASP annual focus

•

To review and evaluate delegate feedback from prior ASMs

•

To select and invite international speakers

•

To select and invite national speakers

•

To nominate speakers for the APS named lectures

•

To determine the topics and speakers for the invited topical sessions

•

To ensure the program addresses relevant and current topical issues

•

To ensure the committee approves all pre- or post- conference meetings associated with the ASM and makes a recommendation to the Board for adoption

Responsibilities of SPC members •

SPC teleconferences are held every 4-6 weeks on a Tuesday afternoon at 4.30pm (Time zone based on NSW). The meetings last 90 minutes.

There are 2 longer meetings each year: – Full day meeting in November – Half day meeting on the Sunday of each ASM

•

SPC members must attend more than 50% of scheduled teleconferences to retain office

Application Process

Through active participation in a range of SPC activities the appointee will contribute to the planning of the Annual Scientific Meeting, and they will gain invaluable experiences and skills with mentorship from senior pain researchers and clinicians on the SPC. The scholar appointee will no doubt find that this experience puts them in very good stead for a strong future career in pain research.

Abstract Background Many Australians with persistent pain rely on specialist tertiary pain services for treatment but they often experience lengthy waits during which clinical deterioration is common. Without funding reform to improve the delivery of communitybased services, we need to better understand the structure and operation of specialist pain services so that care models can be optimised.

The Waiting in Pain (WIP) project was updated because the first round (WIP-I: conducted Dec’08-Jan’10) took place prior to several pain management reforms (e.g., the roll-out of ePPOC, the establishment of statewide clinical networks in NSW, QLD and SA, and the launch of the National Strategic Action Pain for Pain Management). The current study (WIP-II) aimed to re-examine the multidisciplinary staffing levels and clinical landscape of persistent pain services and provide an update to the WIP-I survey.

Methods 109 Australian persistent pain services were identified and invited to participate (online or via telephone). The survey (conducted Jul’16-Feb’18) examined service attributes (type/funding/location), staffing (discipline/ amount), new referrals (received/seen) and pain management programmes (intensity/ activity/staffing). Where possible, results were compared to the original WIP survey.

Results Of the 109 services identified, 76 agreed to participate and 57 were included in the analyses (exclusions: single discipline=6, paediatric=7, pelvic pain=2, cancer pain=1, missing data=2, outlier=1). Pain services were found to have increased over time (representing growth in rural services) and they employed more fulltime equivalent staffing (total and specifically psychiatry, psychology, and occupational therapy). Staffing was relatively stable when considered against clinical activity (new patients seen), suggesting that new clinics replicated existing models. A greater mix of pain management programme structures (duration) was identified, resulting in a reduced ratio of allied health staffing/patient seen in group programmes (WIP-I=0.03; WIP-II= 0.02).

Conclusions Access to pain services remains limited; only 0.18% of the adult Australian population is served by a tertiary pain service despite 1520% of Australian adults living with persistent pain. Staffing mix remained stable over time, indicating that current staffing structures have clinical utility. However, changes in pain management group programme formats and staffing levels does require further investigation.

Future work should map these results against clinical outcomes to fully understand the impact of staffing/clinical structures on patient outcomes.

Abstract Persistent pain is a major public health issue - estimated to affect a quarter of the world’s population. Public understanding of persistent pain is based on outdated biomedical models, laden with misconceptions that are contrary to best evidence. This understanding is a barrier to effective pain management. Thus, there have been calls for public health-based interventions to address these misconceptions. Previous pain focussed public education campaigns have targeted pain beliefs and behaviours

that are thought to promote recovery, such as staying active. However, prevailing painrelated misconceptions render many of these approaches counter-intuitive, at best. Pain Science Education improves understanding of ‘how pain works’ and has been demonstrated to improve pain and disability outcomes. Extending Pain Science Education beyond the clinic to the wider community seems warranted. Learning from previous back pain-focussed and other public health educational campaigns could optimise the potential benefit of such a Pain Science Education campaign. Pain Science Education-grounded campaigns have been delivered in Australia and the UK and show promise, but robust evaluations are needed before any firm conclusions on their population impact can be made. Several challenges exist going forward. Not least is the need to ensure all stakeholders are involved in the development and implementation of Pain Science Education public messaging campaigns. Furthermore, it is crucial that campaigns are undertaken through a health equity lens, incorporating underrepresented communities to ensure that any intervention does not widen existing health inequalities associated with persistent pain.

Professor Cheryl L. Stucky, Medical College of Wisconsin, USA Cheryl Stucky is the Marvin Wagner Endowed Chair at the Medical College of Wisconsin where she is also Director of the Pain Division of the Neuroscience Research Center.

Dr Stucky’s lab studies the molecular, cellular and physiological mechanisms of sensation, particularly how we sense touch and pain. The central theme of Dr Stucky’s lab is to study the molecular and physiological mechanisms that underlie somatosensory mechanotransduction in the normal, healthy state and in conditions of tissue injury or disease.
