Sub-Editor’s Letter Kia ora, and welcome to Issue 10! I hope that your holiday (if you could even call it one!) went well. But, before I get into the fun stuff, there is an important point that I’d like to address. Due to reasons which we cannot yet disclose, Julie Cleaver is no longer the editor of Debate Magazine. Julie wants each and every one of you reading this to know how much she loves you and will miss you. Julie has always given 200% to every single issue, including this one, and has undoubtedly left her mark here at Debate. Being the determined, unapologetic and absolute badass journalist that she is, Julie is such a huge inspiration to me and everyone around her – always striving to do what’s right. She could not have been a better person to work with, both inside and outside of Debate. She has done an incredible job with this issue. The process of brainstorming with her to find topics for this issue was fun and awkward…but mostly fun. In this issue, we cover loads of topics – some AUT news: the recent proposal for job cuts from the Culture & Society faculty and the unexpected closure of North Campus’ Al Parco; as well as a very in-depth review of the sex lives of AUT students (boy, did I enjoy writing that one!). Then, we have an evocative article about how to have sex after sexual assault; a thought piece about the questionable PornHub genre, Fauxcest; the past and present of sex; and many more! I know I said that the last issue was a spicy one, but I think this one definitely takes the cake. As always, thank you to all of our incredible contributors – writers, artists and photographers – and, it goes without saying, thank you to Julie for putting this magazine together. Jennifer.

"People were surprised at the number of positions that were affected - quite shocked. "It is 40 full-time equivalent staff positions, so that's more than 40 people. That's a large number to be affected," she told the NZ Herald. Double-major Criminology & Psychology AUT student, Kajol Singh, also voiced her disappointment. “I think that it is horrible that the University wants to cut jobs in our department,” said Singh. “It seems that no one has bothered with the causation but they are happy to carry out by cutting 40 fully employed staff jobs.” Singh also praised the lecturers in the Culture & Society department.
AUT to cut 40 jobs from Culture & Society By Jennifer Daruwalla The Auckland University of Technology (AUT) has just announced a proposal to cut at least 40 jobs from its Culture & Society department. According to Alison Sykora, AUT’s Head of Communications, the declining student enrolments in the humanities and arts is the reason behind the proposed cuts. “Since 2012, enrolments have dropped by 700 EFTS. “We have announced a proposal (not a final decision) to reduce headcount in the Faculty by up to 40 FTE (full time equivalents),” says Sykora. She states that the job cuts will be
implemented on a voluntary severance basis. When asked if any other faculties are undergoing proposed job cuts, Sykora’s answer was that the University as a whole is growing this year. The Dean of the Culture & Society faculty, Nigel Hemmington, is quoted by the NZ Herald expressing his discontent. “This is disappointing, as student numbers continue to decline and as a result, the faculty faces significant financial challenges in 2018 and 2019.” The NZ Herald also spoke to Tertiary Education Union national industrial officer, Irena Brorens, who says the faculty staff was “rattled” by the proposal.
“All of the lecturers in the Culture & Society faculty are so lovely and caring, it is such a shame that we have to see some of them go. I personally really hope that no criminology or psychology lecturers lose their jobs, as it will be AUT's loss.” Ayana Piper-Healion, a second-year Communications student who is currently taking a Culture & Society paper, is concerned about the state of the course. “Cutting so many roles in a faculty that is not only under-appreciated in today’s society, but is already suffering neglect and shortages at AUT, will severely impact the wellbeing and security of the students that have taken a gamble with their money, time and education by choosing this path. “It really highlights some issues that come with tertiary education being a capitalist venture rather than a place purely focused on higher education,” said Piper-Healion. AUT says it will work with staff and unions over the next two months before reaching a final decision.
“Some people abuse their power” AUT unexpectedly terminates contract of North Campus food vendor By Jennifer Daruwalla Al Parco, the popular Euro-Chinese fusion restaurant on AUT’s North Campus, is being shut down, and the owner doesn’t know why. The owner, Rebecca Lau, taped an A4 notice to her store which stated: “WITHOUT (sic) any reason, we are informed by AUT that our contract will not be renewed. Because of their decision, we are sad to advise that our shop will be closed on 31st August 2018. Life is harsh, some people work hard to earn their living, but some people abuse their power. Thank you for your support over the years.” After this heart-breaking notice was pointed out to me, I had to contact the owner to find out more. First, I wanted to know what AUT students thought of the restaurant.
Chantal Yeatman, a second-year Oral Health student on the North Campus, was extremely disappointed to hear the venue was shutting down. “Al Parco is a great business with polite and friendly staff. They always go out of their way to make sure that you are satisfied with your order. I hope we can somehow keep them around as their food and prices are great. It would be a horrible loss for the uni cafeteria,” she said. Hilary Barker, also a second-year Oral Health student, said her experience at Al Parco has always been fantastic. “They’re super nice – they have great food that always sells out.” North Campus student Chloe Blannin also said she “was shocked to see that they were being closed down.”
But if their service and food are great, then why are they being closed down? I spoke to Rebecca Lau, the owner of Al Parco, in hopes of finding out why the emotionally-fuelled notice was put up. She told me that after working at AUT for seven years, their “contract was terminated with no reason whatsoever”. Although AUT does have the right to take whatever action they please with Al Parco’s contract, the way in which they went about it was disappointing to Rebecca and the employees at Al Parco. When I asked Rebecca what her relationship with AUT had been like prior to this issue, she described it as being “like a landlord and tenant” also stating that the communication between them was like “a primary school teacher laying down rules for us to obey”.
7
She also said the decision to terminate their contract was made with no prior discussion or warning, which prompted her to state that “some people abuse their power.” “It is my personal view that those who can make decisions affecting our livelihood do not exercise their power in good for the wellbeing of the university or its students,” said Rebecca. For a bit of background on the story, in early 2017 Rebecca found a buyer who was interested in buying Al Parco – she just needed permission from AUT to complete the transaction. However, upon doing so Rebecca was notified that there was a third party who had expressed interest in “operating a site on Campus”. When Rebecca informed AUT that she wanted to sell her business, there was no response. Without Rebecca’s knowledge or involvement, AUT arranged a meeting with the buyer and informed them that if they
were to buy Al Parco, AUT would be unsure how long they would renew the contract for, or if they would even renew it. Rebecca said that in her opinion, “This is why the buyer finally decided to cancel the agreement to buy our business.” The reason that this is unfair to Rebecca is because their neighbouring restaurant, The Jewel of Bombay, was able to get a new owner in May of 2017. They are now named Northern Bombay as a result. They disclosed to Rebecca that when they bought the business from The Jewel of Bombay, AUT had assured them that their contract would be renewed upon expiry. Their business wouldn’t have been sold if it weren’t for the renewal of their contract. “If this is true,” she said, “this is totally unfair to me.” “I wanted to renew my contract or seek an extension. However, AUT said that it was too early to consider a renewal, since they are only considered six months prior to the contract expiring.” Hence, Rebecca waited until February of
this year to approach AUT again. They arranged a meeting in March, where she was informed that their contract would not be renewed. When I asked AUT a few questions about the closure of Al Parco, I was mostly ignored. I was told by Alison Sykora, the Head of Communications at AUT, that, “the contractual arrangements between AUT and Al Parco are confidential between the parties and we are not at liberty to discuss this issue.” When asked how the closure is going to impact her and the other employees at Al Parco, Rebecca said she had spent a considerable amount purchasing the business in 2011, and due to the termination of the contract, her business is now “worthless”. Rebecca closed with: “AUT can choose anyone to operate at their campuses, however, I think it is most unreasonable to terminate our contract after seven years without a consultation or even a reason – in fact, without any discussion.”

Let’s Get Intimate By Jennifer Daruwalla | Illustration by Hope McConnell Sex. Something many of us engage in. In order to find out more, I released a survey on Debate Magazine’s Facebook page, thus delving deeper into what the sex lives of AUT students are like. As soon as we got 69 responses, I closed off the survey (because I have the humour of a 14-year-old boy). Here are my findings. Some answers have been edited for grammar and sentence structure, whilst keeping the content the same.
In five words or less, describe your sex life. I thought I’d start off the survey with this because it got the mind jogging. These were my favourite answers: “Too fast and too furious” “Only old men want me” “Tried all two sex positions” “Kinky A.F.” “Lonely, rare & kind of sad tbh” “Experimental, biting, gymnastic” “Like a horse orgy” “Lit”
Have you ever used a sex toy? (DIYs are valid, too!) Having lived in a fairly conservative country for the majority of my life, I wasn’t too sure what to expect. I’m glad many people use sex toys – it’s healthy. And if it’s your thing, you do you! Literally! 21.7 percent said No. 78.3 percent said Yes.
Which sex toy(s) have you used? Now, I can’t type out every single response, but I can show you the ones I found the most intriguing. It’s a given that responses such as “dildo” and “vibrator” will be present, so I’m going to leave those ones out. “Where do I begin? I own all the usual ones, vibrators, magic wand, glass dildos, five butt plugs, including one with a tail and my very own fucking machine – that has to take the cake! Not to mention the bondage gear and other implements of *ass* destruction”
“A wooden rolling pin with a condom on top” – DIY queen! “My partner’s shit” “My ex-girlfriend and I were interested in using sex toys but never had one, so one night we used a carrot… yep, straight from the fridge. I will never live that down” “An entire horse outfit with horse dick strap-on and butt plug tail” And, my personal favourite – “I don’t use toys, that’s gay”
How often do you watch pornography? I was quite surprised at this outcome, too. I thought that most university students were frequent watchers of porn, given the many conversations I’ve had with my own friends, however, the results show otherwise. 13 percent said Never! 42 percent said Sometimes 26.2 percent said Often 18.8 percent said Very Often!
What’s your favourite genre of pornography? “Amateur” – this answer was, by far, the most frequent response. And I’m not shocked because, like, same. “Lesbian” “Bondage/BDSM” “This sounds bad – but I tend to find pornos that resemble chicks I know… can’t have the real thing, so I guess this is second best haha” “Horses from My Little Pony, my favourite is Rainbow Sprinkles” “Any, as long as it gets me off. I don’t discriminate” – A good answer. “I think Porn is evil and a sin.” – The BEST answer.

Have you ever had a casual hook-up?
Have you ever gotten frisky on campus?
36.2 percent said No 63.8 percent said Yes
65.2 percent said No (I’m innocent!) 34.8 percent said Yes (Naughty!)
Have you ever used a dating app for a hook-up? If so, which app(s) have you used?
What’s the most romantic place on campus?
40.6 percent said I haven’t! 36.2 percent said Tinder 5.8 percent said Grindr 4.3 percent said My Little Pony-related apps, such as Pat My Pony and My Little Pony Dating Sim 13.1 percent used other dating apps such as Bumble, Plenty of Fish, Hot Shit and various social media applications.
Would you consider yourself a ‘dom’ or a ‘sub’ in the bedroom? 21.7 percent said Dominant 33.4 percent said Submissive 44.9 percent said Both, I’m versatile!
“The treehouse” – Loads of people responded with this location. I didn’t know that it was a hotspot for being frisky! “The Rainbow Room” – this was also a popular response. It’s a safe space for rainbow students on our City Campus with comfy sofas and board games, so it’s no surprise that this was a recurring answer. Cute. “None. If you consider uni campuses are romantic then you’re really fucking weird. Stop that shit. People go to university to learn and to study, not to fuck or watch you fuck. Get a room” – I think we struck a nerve here! “Curry chips place at the cafeteria. Curry chips is love” “The corner where the tutors chain-smoke” “WT. It’s inspirational looking out there” “Never done anything romantic on campus but to all the couples hooking up in WG by the studios. Fuck off please” And, coincidentally, “WG building near the studios”
4.3 percent said they used My Little Ponyrelated apps for a hook-up What’s the kinkiest thing you’ve ever done? Buckle up, guys. I’ve hand-picked the most interesting, absurd and kinky answers for your reading pleasure. I’ve left out the most popular answers, which were along the lines of “choking”, “being tied up” and “being spanked”. I just have to say, y’all are some kinky people.
“Left my gf tied up naked on my bed while I went out for a few hours. Came home, fucked her brains out and shoved my cock so far down her throat she threw up. Then made her lick it up off my dick” “Had sex in a high school chapel” “Had my ankles and wrists cuffed together and toys plugging both holes while my partner (at the time) dripped candle wax on my ass, before taking photos of the results” “I was once tied up on a massage table and tickled. The nipple clamps I had put on me were vibrating and vibrated off my nipples, and the ropes tied to the roof came undone. It was an interesting and comedic introduction to bondage” “While my girlfriend and I were doing anal, I pissed into her ass, slurped it up, spit it into her mouth, and then told her to swallow. I then got her to piss in my mouth. Don’t knock it ‘til you try it” “I once took a shit and used it as lube” “A fortnut royale” “I dutch-ovened a chick once, but it was accidental. The reason it’s kinky is because we were both kinda into it? We’ve yet to try some different food combinations” “My boyfriend once stuck a cucumber inside me, took it out and ate it”
I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to participate in the survey. There were some hilarious answers in here, some brutally honest, some sad and some too long to include in this article. It was quite an adventure journeying through the responses, but nevertheless, I am now filled with more knowledge about sex and AUT students’ sex lives than one should ever have access to.

How to have sex after sexual assault
By Jess Rayner This article contains details about rape and sexual assault. If there was a comprehensive list about how to have sex after sexual assault, I would have been all over that bitch in a heartbeat. How do you have sex without feeling like you’re going to have a meltdown/pass out/throw up/insert your own alternative here? The thing is, I don’t have an answer to that. And my god, I wish I did, because it would have solved so many failed sex attempts and panic attacks while trying to get in between the sheets with cute uni boys and people from Tinder (OK, mainly just people from Tinder).
I’m quite candid about my sex life – candid enough to publish all the dirty details in Debate. And so I’ll just slip in here that before October last year, sex was an activity I could do with little to no qualms. Boys were polite, respectful and listened to what I had to say, both in and out of the bedroom. That was until I met a boy at a party who was not polite or respectful and didn’t listen when I said no. Since that night, it's been a bit of a struggle to get into bed with someone, understandably. PTSD is a very real and valid thing, so no doubt going right back to a place where I was hurt is a tough thing. I’ve managed to find ways to cope, and while they may not work for everyone, they may work for you.
1. Register that your head and your body are not on the same wavelength. While your brain may know that you’re in a safe place and you won't be hurt, it's a lot harder to convince your body, and that's okay. People react to trauma in a multitude of different ways. Don’t be afraid to tell your sexual partner that you’re hesitant, and if they don’t respond well to that, leave them and have sex with someone who cares about your mental health.
were before the assault. That doesn’t change, regardless of what happened. You deserve a sexual partner who respects you and your decisions, regardless of the nature of the relationship. Longtime partner, Tinder hookup, cute uni pal you met once and boned, it does not matter – you still deserve all the respect in the world. The fact is, there is no definitive list, because everyone is different. Everyone responds in different ways, and there is no right or wrong way to react to traumatic events, and so long as you are looking after yourself, you’re doing a great job. You don’t need to jump into sex, regardless of anything. It’s OK to not cope. It's OK to panic. It's OK to worry. It's OK to be scared. All of these uncomfortable feelings are valid. Anyone that tells you how to react to trauma can sit in back to back tutorials for the rest of their lives, because we don’t want them here. Whenever you feel ready to jump back into the bedroom – or the couch, or the back of the car, there is no discrimination here – go hard (pun intended). Sex can be wonderful, and while it’s awful that someone has ruined that experience for you, you’re allowed to take your body and those experiences back. So grab life – and your partner – by the balls, the hair, whatever body part they have, and go live your best life. Free condoms are available at the AUT doctors' offices and at the AUTSA reception.
Remember that you are as worthy of respect as you were before the assault. That doesn’t change, regardless of what happened.
2. Remember that it's okay to seek reassurance from people you’re having sex with. I recently saw a man I’ve been on/off with for years, and we did the deed, if you know what I mean. He told me beforehand that it was OK if I was emotional – I do trust this man, but he was also the person that introduced me to my rapist, much to his dismay. We were having sex and I felt uncomfortable so told him to stop, and I burst into tears. Despite the fact my rape was months ago, I’m still affected by it, and it’s totally natural. He held me as I cried and reassured me that it was OK, no matter how many times I apologised – not that I had anything to apologise for. There is no time limit on how long you can be affected by rape. Everybody reacts differently, and it's not a thing you can get over straight away. If your partner doesn’t register that you will be different after assault, honey throw the whole partner away. 3. Remember that you are as worthy of respect as you

Sex: Then vs Now Abigail Johnson dove into the depths of the internet and discovered that like good wine, sex also gets better with age. Illustration by Hope McConnell.
The only thing that remains constant
but where I once gave myself heart
just withers away and dies on your 40th
is change. So said pre-Socratic Greek philosopher Heraclitus, and so says me. And while everyone’s sex life is unique, I can guarantee one universal truth: it’s not the same as it used to be.
palpitations at the thought of a lover seeing some body hair, I truly could no longer care less. Nowadays I’m especially into rocking my underarm hair – a trend that’s supposedly on the rise – only getting it waxed off every few months, or when I feel like it. Begone itchy pits!
birthday.
You remember. It might have been a sweaty finger shoved somewhere unmentionable behind the school bushes before the bell rang. Or it was gentle and planned, with candles and sincere professions of “I’ll love you forever” (except now you can’t remember their name). Probably it was in your best friend’s bed, fuelled by Vodka Cruisers and Bourbon, and maybe some stanky weed to boot. Whatever it was, however it was, it’s probably (hopefully) not like that anymore. The first time is crap. That’s fairly wellacknowledged. The first few times, in fact. But so too the first few years – especially if you lost your virginity as a teen. Nothing lasts as long as it should, people press too hard on certain pleasure zones (or what they imagine are certain pleasure zones), and when it’s all over, one person is usually left spluttering, “Yeah, I think I came”.
Grooming One of the most obvious changes, especially for women, is the amount of preshow production that goes in. When you’re 19, razors, tweezers and (oh god) waxing strips abound. When you’re 25, not so much. Now, I can’t speak for everyone here,
But even if you aren’t rocking your hairy birthday suit, you’ll likely worry less than you once did, and let me tell you, that’s a wonderful thing.
Communication There’s only so much sex a person can have before they’re compelled to say, “That’s just not doing it for me”. And, I mean hey, maybe you were one of the lucky ones. Maybe you told your panting partner to slow down and do X Y and Z from day one. But that wasn’t the case for me. Nor was it for most of my friends. Instead the majority of us put up with years of subpar relations for the sake of… I’m not sure, really. Politeness? Shyness? Not really knowing what we liked? The minute you learn to say not there, or not so hard, or, hell, even harder, is the minute things will start to really… happen.
Freakiness If you’ve learned anything from the movies you’ll know it’s the young people, the folks with the symmetrical faces and rock-hard abs, who are having the super wild sex. And the old folks? Well, it turns out your libido
Except the movies don’t always get it right, and research proves they are far from accurate on this front. Study after study have concluded that women get more adventurous in bed as they age, and men get less self-conscious. (By the way, clicking on study after study about ‘how sex gets better as you age’ has definitely screwed up my algorithm. Hi ads for elderly sex aids.) It also turns out that the older you get, the more you’ll want to move things out of the bedroom – and into the garden! So maybe give Nana a ring before you show up unannounced.
Confidence One of the best parts about aging – after all the wisdom and stuff – is the confidence you gain. This doesn’t just apply to sex either. You’ll, hopefully, begin to put your foot down when you’ve been treated unfairly. You’ll, hopefully, begin taking opportunities you were once too shy to take. And, best of all, you’ll probably, hopefully, start having the best sex of your life. The studies affirm that most women are having better sex in their 40s than they did in their 20s. And that can only mean good things for the other genders too. So, if you’re currently in your 20s – and you’re already having good sex – just wait. Apparently it’s about to get explosive. And hey, it’s probably already a hellova lot better than it used to be.

The Sexual Liberation of us By Bridie Chetwin-Kelly | Illustration by Hope McConnell I have been raped twice in my life. I have been held down and forced to give sexual favours. I have been told that I wanted it, when I didn’t. I have had a “No” be forced into a “Yes”. I have had my ass grabbed more times then I can count. I have been forcefully kissed, hugged and touched. I have been sexually harassed by people I know and people I don’t know. I have been yelled at, leered at, grabbed, welcomed with unwanted physical touching, terrified to walk the streets, scared to see groups of men heading my way and I have had to say stop more times than I have consented in my life. I am just like you. I am just like most women. I am part of the statistic that states one in three women are assaulted by the age of 16. I am part of the group of one in five women who has experienced sexual assault as an adult. I am part of the 91 percent of women who did not report the sexual violence against them. I am of the 24 percent of women who have experienced high-end sexual violence in their life time.
We are taught that it is our fault. We are taught that because of what we wear, how we smile, how we carry ourselves, it is to be expected that we will be sexually assaulted. We learn to accept that it was our own fault. We accept that’s just the way things are. And then we slowly learn to love ourselves again, we slowly regain confidence, sexual liberation and pride. And yet, we are shamed for being proud of ourselves, even after we go through all of this, sometimes daily.
For you can knock me down, call me a slut and tell me it was my fault a hundred times but I will keep fighting for the sexual liberation of women. But now, after every time a man asserts his toxic masculinity onto me, I am liberated. Although my body has seen things it should never have, I am liberated. For you can knock me down, call me a slut and tell me it was my fault a hundred times but I will keep fighting for the sexual liberation of women. We will continue to take back our bodies. We will continue to take back sex and sexuality from you and we will walk tall together. For this is not about you, this is about us not letting our bodies be ruled by our past and the terrible things that have happened. Because it is not our fault. It is yours. And before you shame a girl for dressing a certain way, just remember she’s allowed forgiveness in herself 100 times over. She’s allowed to know it’s okay to take pride in her sexuality without expecting the tirade of shame and harassment from women and men alike. You don’t know a woman’s journey, you don’t know what we’ve had to battle to be proud in our skin when we are subjected to media and industries that tell us we are not good enough and must always strive to be better, largely driven by the same patriarchy that oppresses us. We fight every day to be safe, to be okay, to walk taller and be prouder. Despite what we go through on a daily basis, this is the sexual liberation of us.

What it’s like to work as an escort AUT student bares all Illustration by Hope McConnell It’s 11pm, and the phone rings. It's not unusual for people to be calling this late. In fact, this is quite early. I pick it up: “Hey, how can I help?” He asks for Anna and asks if she's available for a one-hour booking at midnight. I assure him that she is, and that all up, it’ll be $250 – more if he wants extras. I rattle off the extras to him: “Dirty talk, cum on body, cum in mouth [with a condom on] and girlfriend experience are all an extra $50, anal is an extra $200.” He asks for girlfriend experience (GFE) and assures me he will be there at 12pm. I hang up and yell out, “Jasmine, I’ve got a booking!” It’s just another night being an escort in Auckland City. I got into the sex industry in November last year. My former best friend got me into it, and as shocked as I was that I knew someone who worked in the sex industry, I was also very intrigued. People paying me to have sex with them?
Sign me up! After a couple of meetings with Jasmine, we were in the apartment she works from and she was asking me to strip down so we could take photos. It didn’t take long to get bookings. My prices were higher than some of those advertised, but my photos were good, I was great at what I did and I knew how to be sexy with clients. I’ll never forget my first booking. He booked me for half an hour and paid for GFE on top, a total of $250. He showered, jumped into bed beside me and away we went. Twenty minutes later he came, he wanted to cuddle, so we just lay there while he asked me questions about myself. Part of being in the sex industry is looking after yourself, so of course I couldn't tell him the truth. I quickly learnt that it's easier to keep the same story. I told them of Anna, the girl from Hamilton, here to study law but working as an escort to pay rent. When they ask why I work here, I’ll smile and tell them, “I like the sex”.
23
Of course, there are many risks associated with working as an escort: STDs and pregnancy being two of the main ones. We have a multitude of protective barriers set up to minimise the chance of these occurring. In June of 2003, New Zealand decriminalised sex work and with this came an array of laws regarding the safety of workers. For example, it is illegal to engage in sex without protection, whether that be oral, anal or vaginal sex. Oral sex with a vagina must be done with a dental dam, and with a penis, all kinds of sex must be done with a condom. Failure to do so incurs $10,000 fine for the manager and a $2,000 fine for the worker. Due to this, most managers will supply the protection needed, as well as lube and baby oil. Each girl also had to make a personal decision as to whether they would go on hormonal birth control or not, and most of us did, just to be safe.
second place I worked at was on Anzac Ave with this man called Michael. He was very much borderline abusive. One night, after he yelled at me while my client was in the shower getting ready for a booking, I decided I was leaving and never saw Michael again. I heard later from other working girls that he most definitely should be avoided at all costs.
Despite the risks, I didn’t just stay with Jasmine. I also worked in two other places, but none of them were as good. The
I was told when entering that it’s fundamental to come into the sex industry with a goal of how much money you want
The next place I worked was in Ellerslie, just off the main road. That place was by far the wildest. There were about 15 girls who worked there, but we would take turns coming in whenever we wanted shifts. This house most certainly prioritised partying over making money. I was only in the industry so that I could make cash quickly, and while I’m sure that other girls had the same idea as I did, it quickly turned into nights of partying, rather than focusing on the money.
to save and a timeframe of how long you’ll be working for. “Without turning to alcohol and drugs,” my managers told me, “most girls have a year, tops. After that they lose their minds.” I shortly left Ellerslie and went back to my first manager, Jasmine. It was here that I had some of the strangest bookings. One man came to see me and started crying because he missed his girlfriend, who had broken up with him days prior to seeing me. Another client I had was a police officer who only wanted a sensual massage (with massages we oil the client with baby oil and use our body parts to massage. We then give them a blowjob while they wear a condom). He finished early and we spent the remaining time talking about abortion laws in New Zealand and the Me Too movement. My funniest client was also the youngest client I’ve ever had. This man must have been about 19 or 20, and I was just about to give him a blowjob when he asked me, “So, maybe we could do this outside of here? Like a friends-with-benefits thing?” I laughed so hard he went soft, and needless to say he didn’t come back.
Being in the sex industry was a very tiresome time. There were so many things to learn, like acronyms (GFE, COB, CIM, DFK, meaning girlfriend experience, cum on body, cum in mouth, deep French kissing), how to make them cum in the shortest amount of time possible (my best time, from the time my client got in the shower to the time he came was in SIX MINUTES FLAT). The other thing we learn is how to not kill them when they say something rude or disrespectful.
But it wasn’t always good experiences. The first time I saw a man wearing a wedding ring I burst into tears. I raged and swore at my manager for hours after he had left: “He didn’t even have enough decency to take off his fucking wedding ring!”
There are naturally a tonne of late nights and times that I wouldn’t get home until three, four, or five in the morning. Sometimes I wouldn’t have any bookings at all, and I would have to stay overnight so I could bus home in the morning, because I couldn’t afford to Uber. But sometimes I made $600 in one night and I got to leave at midnight. Every night was different. My best financial night was when I was seeing an Auckland Council worker. He paid for an hour session, which is a flat fee of $250, but he was so strung out on cocaine that he couldn’t get hard. We kissed for a bit but we spent the majority of the time talking. He then paid for an extra 20 minutes, which was an extra $150, of just talking, and then gave me a $75 tip. After taking off 30 percent of the flat rates (which is given to the manager to pay for the cost of the apartment we work from, power/water bills, laundry, sex equipment etc and does not include tips or any extras), I went home with $300 from the one client. Not a bad night at all.
CIM, DFK, meaning
There were so many things to learn, like acronyms (GFE, COB, girlfriend experience, cum on body, cum in mouth, deep French kissing)
But I learnt while working that it's so much better for a client to come and see me once a week rather than engage in an emotional attachment with someone else. Escorts and their clients do not have an emotional bond – we are there for the money, the client is there for an array of reasons, mostly for sex or for company. One man told me that he came because his life was so centred around his wife and children, he just wanted something for himself. It did make me sad, but I also understood that he needed to be selfish.
Working in the sex industry was both a great and horrific time. I loved the pillow talk, making people feel special and less alone. I had some regulars who would come see me every so often and I got on very well with the girls I worked with, but it was taking a toll on my mental health dramatically. I was taking the insults from men to heart and I constantly degraded myself for being a sex worker, despite the fact it is an emotionally and physically taxing, legitimate job. It was a client that pushed me to leave, in the worst way. He started choking me, again without my permission, so I pushed him off me, refunded his money and left. Once I got home I self-harmed, knowing that if I did self-harm I wouldn’t be able to work, and messaged my manager telling her that I was unable to work as I was injured. I never went back. Despite everything, it's not all bad. You’ll get great money, wild work stories and a very flexible job choice – as unconventional as it is. Sex workers are not dirty or gross, they’re just people wanting a different lifestyle. I promise, it's more common than you’d think. One of my old managers also worked at Animates, some of the girls I worked with study law at Auckland Uni, some of the girls I see on campus. We share a secret smile with each other, paying tribute to all the nights we’ve spent laughing and talking and sharing tales about our lives: the lives of escorts.

Why is PornHub trying to get me to fuck my siblings? By Jennifer Daruwalla | Illustration by Eliza Mackay
“But you’re my brother – what if our parents find out? This is so wrong.” If you’ve been on PornHub recently, you’ve probably noticed the influx of ‘Fucking My Hot Step-Mom’ or ‘Giving My Brother a Blowjob’ videos. Needless to say, it’s, uh, really fucking weird. This genre of pornography is called ‘fauxcest’. Although I don’t watch fauxcest myself, I wanted to get to the bottom of its rather unexpected and unusual popularity. Having read multiple comment threads on said PornHub videos, a large part of why fauxcest porn is so popular is because of its scandalous and taboo nature. Pornography, for the most part, is largely based on transgression – overstepping boundaries. Kinks and fetishes are said to be like hot sauce – it gives your food a kick and, in this case, the fauxcest kink is the sauce – the sauciness of having sex with someone you aren’t meant to is a turn-on for some people. And by some, I mean an alarming number of people. Seriously. This kink is the ultimate transgression when it comes to, not only pornography, but life in general. The birth of fauxcest is not recent. I used to think that the popularity of HBO’s
Game of Thrones was responsible for the genre, however, though it may have been the cause of more clicks, the show is not where fauxcest began. I tried to find the very first occurrence of inter-familial media, and I was taken back to Year 12, when I studied Oedipus in literature, which just goes to show that inter-familial relationships in the media have been around for centuries. Though I’m not sure the nature of fauxcest porn could ever compare to the complexity of Greek mythology, it’s just something to think about. Perhaps the most famous example of fauxcest is the film series Taboo, which was first released in 1980. The film involved many father-daughter and mother-son sexual encounters. Would you believe me if I told you that the film series has actually won an award – sorry, seven awards? Since then, they have made 22 more films, the most recent in 2007, thus completing the series at 23 fauxcest films. I decided to do some investigative journalism of my own, so I asked one of my porn-watching friends why they think the fauxcest genre is so popular. They said that “people often fetishize what they can never do in real life, and so, the genre of
fauxcest porn thrives in our world where it’s wrong to fuck anyone in your family. It’s also not necessarily the fact that people want to fuck their family, it’s the taboo of it all which drives people wild.” Every year, PornHub releases its statistics. I had a field day taking a look at them – they’re actually really interesting! When looking at last year’s top searches, the terms ‘Step Mom’, ‘Step Sister’ and ‘Mom’ are just below ‘Lesbian’, ‘Hentai’ and ‘MILF’. I was quite shocked to see that the familial terms were not higher up in the ranks despite their recurring presence in many (many) categories. In fact, although the statistics showed how popular fauxcest pornography was, there was not one comment about it in the analyses. A commenter even pointed out that despite the high rank of various familial terms in many categories, the taboo is still present – even in PornHub’s annual statistics report – so much so that they haven’t made a remark about it. I can’t stop you from getting off to fauxcest if that’s your thing. My personal philosophy is that there are different strokes (get it?) for different folks, just as long as you’re not harming yourself or anyone else, and, if I may be candid, doing it with your own family.

friends with benefits the good, the bad and the ugly
By Gabbie Tutheridge | Illustration by Hope McConnell
The good side
Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake had it all mapped out for us. We were going to have sex with our best mates and then fall in love, right? Something like that.
If you’re a heartless bitch like myself (sometimes), then friends with benefits is probably the best thing for you. This is because you can have sex without the attachments that come with it.
Having friends with benefits (outside of the movies) is a lot more complicated. On the one hand you’re getting a good dicking or licking, and on the other, you may actually be falling for them – you know, those shitty things called feelings.
The great thing about having frequent sex with someone who is your friend is that you get your pleasure fix and you also get to experiment. Take your time with your buddy, find out what really makes you or them fizz-sizzle-pop-bang-fucking-slamdunk, and then damn, that’s an orgasm. It’s empowering, having sex with other people and experimenting along the way. It’s a confidence boost that everyone needs to experience.
There is also the stigma around sex in general. People think if you’re getting it, then you’re either: a) lucky, congrats, shit I want to throw you a party, or b) you are a “slut” or a “manwhore” because you have had a few sexual partners, and therefore a small-minded minority will deem you as not worthy of anyone else. The second option is an ignorant assumption pushed onto our generation, and it’s also stupid. We need to start looking at sex differently. Sex is a natural way of life, and also getting feelings for someone who you spend time with is a natural way of life. If you are having consensual sex, then nothing bad can be said about having a friend with benefits, but it is not for everyone.
When you’ve finished with the benefits, just remain friends, high-five and say thanks for that, remember that you are good mates and continue that way. Alternatively, maybe there were feelings and you decide that you enjoy each other’s company, more than just a root and boot. This is the beautiful thing about friendships, that they can bloom into a relationship and that’s great. But be careful: if your communication is not clear about what each other wants, then this may be a dead end and a dead friend.
29
Be honest or it may turn bad
The ugly side
Be honest with yourself. If you are someone who easily falls in love and can catch feelings through sexual and physical connection, then friends with benefits may not be the best option for you, unless you have made very clear guidelines with your buddy ol’ pal.
Then there’s the ugly side of friends with benefits, don’t tell me that I didn’t warn you: when one person gets feelings and the other doesn’t and may be dating other people at the same time. This is hard because it does break off that friendship. It may mend over time, but those feelings may never fade so you need to pick yourself up and move on. It’s as simple as that. Never rely on someone to give you worth through sex. That’s not how sex should work. If you are looking for love, love yourself first. You won’t find love through friends with benefits.
These guidelines may include: 1. Making sure the communication is clear from the start about what you both want out of it. 2. Preferences: Talk about what makes you tick and what really doesn’t. If you don’t like giving head, then tell them. Don’t just wait for your friend to shove your head down onto their bits and sticks to then tell them. 3. Boundaries: This isn’t 50 Shades of Grey, but you do need a safe word and to let them know what you don’t like. 4. If someone starts to get those niggly little things called feelings, let one another know. This may be the right time to call it quits and remain friends without it getting ugly. 5. Be friends! That’s the whole fucking point.
Let’s get it on There’s the good, the bad and the ugly which comes with getting it on with your mate, so choose wisely and think about what you really want out of banging ya bud. Remember to keep up the communication, talk about feelings, what one another wants and what is off limits (no, I will not touch your feet, ew). If you can’t do these simple things, then it is better to stay clear of the bone-zone. Lastly, let’s break the friends with benefits stigma, it should be funfantastic-fucking, so let’s keep it that way.
I accidentally went to a strip show with my mum
described herself as working in risk management by day and risqué management at night. As an audience we started off a little shy, so she warmed us up by making us sing and encouraging us to buy more drinks.
By Clodagh O’Carroll
There were no male performers, which my mum found boring. She was also worried about there being so many women in the audience of the show, while I was worried about there being so many men, proving two feminists can have completely different opinions.
In the words of Katy Perry, this was never the way I planned, not my intention. Let me explain. My mum’s new work was having a Midwinter Christmas event, a burlesque and dinner in Waikino. She invited me along because she didn’t know many of her colleagues yet and could do with a plus one. I said yes, thinking the show would be people in cool costumes singing and dancing, perhaps with a 1920s theme. Suffice to say, that is not what we got. We got women taking off all their clothes to pre-recorded music. I appreciate women’s bodies as much as the next bisexual, so I was okay with this, except that I was there with my mum and a room full of people from the Hauraki District Council. It’s hard to appreciate a good striptease when your mum is across the table from you. The emcee, a curvy woman in a sexy Santa costume, was crackup. She made jokes about the council paying for strippers and
Fortunately, there were some very creative performances, like a cheese-themed striptease (‘stripcheese’, she called it). I will never look at Chesdale the same again. There was also a vaudeville performer, dressed as a man on one side of her body and as a woman on the other side, who danced as if she were a couple. My favourite, though, was probably the woman with the sea-like dress and floaty fans. That was stunning. While the show wasn’t what I expected, I still had a good time. I’d definitely go to a burlesque show again, just not with a family member. Here’s some important life advice, people: when you get invited to a show, Google it before accepting.

Hangry AF
Victim of the Hanger
My first mistake was arriving at the date absolutely starving. I could barely look my date in the eye because all my attention was on the menu. It’s unsurprising then that my second mistake was immediately forgetting my date’s name.
I arrived early. The place was chilled out and so was the weather. I saw a pretty girl standing alone, a bit lost, so I introduced myself and there she was: my blind date.
I decided it would be rude to leave having no idea who he was. Halfway through the date (awkward timing) I turned and asked for his name again. Upon my question he snickered and said I could call him ‘[deleted for privacy reasons]’ and it was easier to remember. Mildly embarrassed we continued chatting about uni courses and the weather. I was doing my best to concentrate but all the conversation seemed to go in one ear and out the other as I watched the staff carry out other people’s steaming orders. Finally, my food arrived and not gonna lie, that was the highlight of my evening. Unfortunately, our conversation was pretty bland; not quite as juicy as my Chook Royale which was hitting my stomach's g-spot. Bless the poor boy, because despite my terrible memory and hangry demeaner, he wanted to continue our date. At that point I’d grown a food baby the size of a nine-month foetus and said, “No sorry,” I needed to get home and work on assignment. My 2000word essay was going to be more exciting than idle chit chat over a beer. Burger Fuel gets a 10/10 for a satisfying burger and hot spud fries. Date gets a 10/10 for effort and trying to converse with a hangry girl. Conversation gets a 2/10 because it was as underwhelming as cold chips.
We did a normal handshake and introduced ourselves, then hurriedly we ordered the burgers as she was quite hungry (she said that she gets angry when hungry) so we kind of ordered our burgers right away. I think she really loved the burgers at Burgerfuel, she was so excited and hungry. And then we talked about the usual stuff: where are you from and what are you studying? I was getting comfortable and she was chilled out. Well then, the burger came, and she was back to being normal. It was good also she told me she is working quite hard and managing her education (that’s great). Then I asked her to join me for drinks, but she told me she had to complete three assignments (I do get her being tense and all, but I think people should enjoy the moment). Also, I asked her if she wants to exchange her phone number, but she told me she is always busy so after having a good time we hugged and bid adieu to each other. If she is reading this, I had a good time and this experience is going in my diary (if I start writing one) and good luck with your assignments. This was something new to me, I would love to go on another blind date.

Food Porn Starting with a long, slow warmup... she runs her tongue up and down... and licks gently. Lowering her head, she takes it further in... tingles of pleasure rush through her. She brings it to the back of her throat, with her tongue still roaming. Slowly raising back up, she starts all over again. She bends over, and goes on for the next 15 minutes —clearly demonstrating outstanding skills. She lubricates it to her satisfaction. She gets increasingly breathless, but continues yearning for more. Emitting soft moans, she increases speed. She feels a surge of warm liquid exploding in her mouth. Carelessly, she allows the thick and sticky load to leak, out of her mouth, and down onto her chin. What a big mouthful, she thought. Licking the last drops of sweetness until completely clean, she sits on the kitchen floor in post-orgasmic bliss. It all started with a plate of chocolatey pancakes, drizzled with white chocolate sauce.

“ADAPT is AUT’s drama and performance theatre club, and runs a series of workshops, classes, and social events, as well as putting on full and feature length plays yearly.
"When I heard about Out@AUT around the time I started at AUT, I spent a while—my first year, studying a certificate—wanting to attend one of the hangouts. However, being a shy, quiet person who struggles with social anxiety, I kept putting it off. Fortunately, the next year, when I started my degree, I met Jennifer. When she learnt that I wanted to get involved, she encouraged me to go along with her to the Rainbow Room for a hangout, and so I did.
Most recently we partnered with international playwright Paul Vintner to perform the world premiere of his work ‘Foreshock’, as well as character workshopping with him. This semester we’re already underway with our next production (see you there!). We’re also holding a variety of workshops with industry professionals that everyone is welcome to attend. We accept performers and talents of all kinds, from Shakespeare to stand-up, rappers to writers. If you were a drama kid in high school, then ADAPT is probably for you! We love to have fun and are entertainers at heart, and we welcome any new members with open arms. Find us on Facebook at AUT ADAPT for more updates and information on our activities and latest workshop partners! We also have weekly meetings every Thursday at 4:30pm in AUT’s Black Box theatre.”
And since then, Out@AUT has changed my university experience. For one, there are the friendly people; everyone is nice, welcoming, and inclusive, free of judgement. What’s even more amazing is that they are all themselves. Because of these lovely people, I come back again and again. And Out@AUT has done wonders with my social life; from the small hangouts in the Rainbow Room to the events, it has gone from nonexistent to… well, existing. Additionally, I’ve had the chance to join the committee as a general executive. I’ve also been involved with The Outlet from its creation to now, three issues in with more to come (as of writing), it has been an honour to contribute to it. I believe that Out@AUT has helped me grow as a person, becoming someone who is slightly more confident. Seriously, it’s like being on the other side of the rainbow."
