THE ARTFORM OF WOODEN PADDLES

Local artists decorate replica paddles manufactured by Kirtland Community College Wood Science Technology students New paddle partners have come together to support the AuSable River Canoe Marathon. Students and faculty from the Kirtland Community College Wood Science Technology program worked last semester on crafting replica wooden paddles and paddle-shaped keychains, which were then decorated by local artists to reflect the spirit of the marathon and northern Michigan. The paddles will be on display in Grayling and Oscoda throughout the summer before being auctioned off to provide financial support for the marathon.

Approximately 20 replica, scaled-down paddles were crafted from locally milled lumber—white cedar, red pine, red oak and soft maple. Students used CNC router technology with traditional woodworking tools to manufacture the paddles, which were then turned over to local artists. From there, the artists decorated the paddles with paintings, carvings or any medium the artist selected, and all paddles required a custom mounting tool from the artist.

Wood Science Technology Instructor Randi Dodgson even made a paddle of her own, and is one of the featured artists. “I made my paddle doing a geometric end-grain pattern,” she said. “I used scrap generated from the other paddles manufactured by the students.”

Community College is a fast-paced nine-month certificate program. The curriculum was designed in partnership with industry leaders to provide students the hands-on experience employers are looking for.

“The wood industry is important to our area,” Dodgson said. “My hope, and the hope of Kirtland Community College, is to engage the community to create an elite workforce in order to grow the industry and our local economy. There are plenty of job opportunities for people who want to learn what it means to work in the wood products industry.”

In addition to the artist paddles, 200 keychains were created using the Wood Science Technology program’s Glowforge laser engraving machine. All the keychains were cut out of 1/8” thick cherry and ash—hardwood species traditionally used for canoe paddles—and engraved with custom ARICM artwork.

“The canoe paddle project illustrates exactly what a Wood Science Technology project should be—traditional woodworking with a manufacturing twist,” Dodgson said. “We designed the paddles using CAD software, programmed the toolpath, then optimized the process after

the initial setup, taking the time per paddle from 24 minutes to 5 minutes. Students also performed manual machining practices utilizing jointers, planners, miter saws, plunge routers, and sanding equipment.”

The finished paddles will be displayed at Grayling and Oscoda businesses throughout the summer (May 27 to August 1) and auctioned off online (July 17 to August 1).

Proceeds will go to the ARICM’s general operating fund.

What is the Consumers Energy AuSable River Canoe Marathon?

At 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 24, 2021, two-person racing teams will begin North America’s toughest, richest, non-stop canoe race. At the sound of the gun, the teams, carrying their canoes on their shoulders, race several blocks down Peninsular Street in Grayling, Michigan to the AuSable River in front of The Old AuSable Fly Shop. The 14 to 19-hour, 120 mile race, runs throughout the night, finishing in Oscoda at Lake Huron. The race is considered to be the world’s toughest spectator sport.

Race fans are an integral part of the AuSable River Canoe Marathon. They cheer and motivate their favorite teams throughout the night. They must find access to the river in total darkness, navigate among thousands of other fans in order to get a glimpse of their favorite team, and then move downstream to another public landing, bridge, or Consumers Energy hydro portage. Fans will drive, wait patiently for their team to appear at each point in the river, and cheer madly for 14 to 19 hours as the contestants move down river.

Racers must portage the six dams and battle darkness, the river’s natural obstructions, weather conditions, and sheer exhaustion brought on by paddling their lightweight canoes at a torrid pace of 50 to 80 strokes per minute, non-stop to finish the race. They receive no aid except food, drink, and perhaps a dry shirt passed to them by their “feeders” at points along the course. During the

eight hours of nighttime paddling, they receive little assistance from the moon in avoiding the river’s natural obstacles and are allowed only a small light on the front of their canoe. The race committee requires all canoes to have GPS trackers on board for safety and for fans to follow their teams. The racers must be in top physical condition and most participants cross train in other sports all year round.

The racing action gets underway at Penrod’s Canoe Livery (Maple Street Bridge in Grayling) with the AuSable Marathon Time Trials for starting position on July 21, 22, 23. The Time Trials are much like “Indy 500” qualifying: each team paddles a shortlooped course with their lap time determining their starting row position for the LeMans’ style run to the river on Saturday.

reated by Hall of Fame Historian John B. Cook, the Iron Paddler Award is given to paddlers who have finished 10 or more AuSable River Canoe Marathons in the Professional Division. To put 10 finishes into perspective, it is 1,200 miles of intense hardcore paddling; it is a minimum of 500,000 relentless paddle strokes; it is a minimum of 140 hours of grueling canoe racing.

Meet the 6 Dams Along the AuSable River Canoe Marathon Route Consumers Energy welcomes you to the 2021 AuSable River Canoe Marathon, where our dams have been integral for decades.

To fans, they provide convenient locations along the river to view the action and cheer on the competitors.

To competitors, the dams are destinations to mark progress, stretch their legs and accept much-needed snacks and drinks from friendly volunteers. Racers also recognize each dam has unique characteristics that influence paddling strategies and can make or break finishing times.

MIO DAM

With the downhill sprint and splashy launch of their canoes in Grayling during daylight a fading memory that has given way to a cadence of powerful paddle strokes and darkness, canoe marathoners are relieved to reach Mio Dam. At this first portage, they get the welcomed opportunity to walk, run, stretch and get energized from the roaring greetings from appreciative fans. Mio Dam recreation sites located on both sides of the river immediately downstream of the dam provide spectators multiple locations to view the race.

Mio Dam construction was completed in 1916 and has a four megawatt capacity.

The plant, recognized as a State Historical Site, was the first dam to utilize a conduit, or under sluice spillway. Race teams begin arriving at the site at approximately 3:15 a.m.

ALCONA DAM

Race teams begin arriving at Alcona Dam, the second portage along the AuSable River Canoe Marathon, about 5:30 a.m. The reservoir behind Alcona Dam is known for its thick fog. The Alcona Tailwater or left side

recreation site provides spectators the best opportunity to view the race as well as park safely.

Alcona Dam construction was completed in 1924 and has an 8 megawatt capacity. The plant was originally named Bamfield Dam after a nearby road.

LOUD DAM

Loud Dam is the third portage along the Marathon route. Race teams begin arriving at this site about 7:20 a.m. The plant is named after Ed Loud, a local lumber baron who owned much of the land along the AuSable River from Grayling to Oscoda. Consumers Energy purchased the property directly from Mr. Loud. Entry to Loud Dam and parking is limited to team feeders and race officials who have official Marathon parking passes at Loud Dam. Spectators can utilize the Five Channels Dam site which is located a short distance downriver, where highway M-65 crosses over the AuSable River.

Loud Dam construction was completed in 1913 and has a 4 megawatt capacity.

FIVE CHANNELS

Not far below Loud Dam is the fourth portage on the Marathon, Five Channels – so named because the AuSable River contained five distinct channels where the dam was built. Race teams begin arriving at this site about 7:45 a.m. Five Channels is listed on the National Register of Historical Places because the camp used by workers building the facility served as a model for worker camps during construction of the Panama Canal. Five Channels provides significant race viewing opportunities at the canoe portage and the old M-65 bridge.

Parking and standing on the new M-65

bridge is not allowed. Parking for spectators is possible on both the south side and north side of the river and a little walking may be required.

Five Channels Dam construction was completed in 1912 and has a 6 megawatt capacity.

COOKE DAM

Cooke Dam is listed on the National Register of Historical Places for holding the world record at the time for voltage and distance transmission, as it transmitted 140,000 volts for 125 miles to Flint, Mich.

Named for the banker who helped finance the project, Andrew Cooke, it is the fifth of six portages along the Marathon route.

Race teams begin arriving at this site about 8:45 a.m. Cooke Dam provides ample race viewing opportunities at the various upstream recreation sites and at the downstream recreation site.

Cooke Dam construction was completed in 1911 and has a 6 megawatt capacity.

FOOTE DAM

Savvy paddlers aiming for a strong finish at the AuSable River Canoe Marathon incorporate strategies to deal with stiff winds and waves that are often encountered in the water behind Foote Dam, the sixth and final portage. This project is named for William A. Foote, founder of Consumers Energy.

Race teams begin arriving at this site about 10 a.m. Foote Dam provides spectators a great opportunity to view the race from the recently renovated Foote Tailwater recreation site. Spectators are not allowed access to the dam and retaining wall.

Foote Dam construction was completed in 1918 and has a 9 megawatt capacity.

In memory of a true AMANDA HANEY canoe supporter EA, MBA The Marathon Committee and canoe racing in general has lost a true supporter. Sylvia (Curley) Harmon, daughter of Harry Curley, was a dedicated member of the AuSable River Canoe Marathon Committee for many years.

She was one of the people we relied on for historical information and background knowledge of the race. Sylvia was also instrumental in the planning of the Curley Memorial Canoe Race that is held each year prior to the Marathon, as well as coordinating events for the Canoer’s Memorial Monument.

Sylvia volunteered on many other committees and was involved in numerous local organizations. The canoe racing world lost a beautiful soul and heaven gained an angel.

Finish line headquarters renovation

When the paddlers arrive at the finish line of the Consumers Energy AuSable River Canoe Marathon, they may not notice the trailer sitting off to the side. During the off season the Marathon committee uses the trailer to store much of the equipment and signs needed for race week.

For many years the “trailer” has been a hub of activity and an important part of the finish line activities for the Canoe Marathon. The Finish Line trailer serves as the base for all paddler information and results, throughout the evening.

Over the past several years our Finish Line headquarters has started to fall into disrepair. Because we depend totally on the financial support of our sponsors and donations from other companies and individuals, we have never had the means to do any renovations. Thanks to generous donations from Northland Area Federal Credit Union and Heritage House Realty Oscoda/AuSable, the Marathon committee has been able to do the much needed renovations on our mobile headquarters. What began as a simple “fix it up” project turned into a full blown rebuild. The trailer was totally torn off its trailer and a new one built in its place. We can’t wait to be able to reveal the final project at the finish line on July 25, 2021!

Cheer the racers, fight the invaders

Snub invasive plants along the AuSable with tools and practices

It’s the middle of the night, in the middle of nowhere, and you’re jockeying for a spot on the bank of the AuSable River to rally racers onward with howls of encouragement. As a “feeder” your job is even more urgent: Get to your paddlers with essential supplies so they have the fuel they need to finish “The World’s Toughest Spectator Sport,” and don’t be late.

Amid this 15-hour overnight frenzy, miles away from the nearest paved sidewalk or street lamp, there’s bigger things to think about than where you’re stepping. Out here it’s just dirt trails, worn down by the boots of backpackers, anglers and marathoners over generations. In daylight the river valley doesn’t look much different from one marathon to the next, and the race itself is a celebration of an unchanging tradition.

But in the treads of our boots and the folds of our clothes, the seeds of plants able to alter this landscape in radical ways can hitch a ride through the valley without us ever noticing. When we pay attention to this fact, those plants lose the element of surprise.

Northern Michigan is host to dozens of invasive plant species, brought to the Midwest intentionally as ornamental shrubs or accidentally in the ballast water of ships then dispersed by humans, animals and natural forces. Three species in particular — Japanese barberry, garlic mustard and purple loosestrife — require serious attention to limit their spread within the AuSable River watershed where they are already present.

“Japanese barberry is very prevalent along the AuSable and the Mason Tract, a public trail system near Roscommon that follows the river,” said Shelby Bauer, Stewardship Program Coordinator for Huron Pines. “Studies find tick populations are much higher in barberry-infested areas because ticks are attracted to the plant’s shrubby nature and the small rodents that take shelter within them. I’ve found this to be true in my own experience in the field 28

and this makes staying on paths really important.”

Huron Pines and its partners continue making strides in controlling these invasive species and there is still work to be done. In the meantime, these plants will continue causing trouble in areas where they’re established and we need to be vigilant about not helping them along.

Garlic mustard is not as widespread here as in southern parts of the state but is present along forest trails where it acts as ground cover and outcompetes tree seedlings and other native plants. It’s also a prolific seed producer and the tiny seeds remain viable for up to 7 years.

Since 2012, Huron Pines has partnered with the U.S. Forest Service, Consumers Energy and students from Oscoda Area Schools to hand-pull hundreds of pounds of garlic mustard annually near Foote Dam, keeping the species in check while protecting a healthy population of wild ginger there.

Similar efforts against purple loosestrife by local watershed groups have helped keep this wetland wildflower at bay along the AuSable River. It’s another significant seed producer, carried along by waders and watercraft that come in contact with ripe seed pods.

more conscious of where we’re walking but we can also equip ourselves with simple tools and practices to reduce the spread of invasive species during the race and beyond. Consider taking these actions before, during and after your canoe marathon experience: • Pack a stiff-bristled brush and lint roller.

Use the brush to clean seed-carrying dirt, mud and debris from your boots and treads regularly. This also works for waders and bike tires before and after each use.

• Inspect and clean your clothes and gear between uses and locations. A lint roller is a fast and effective way to remove seeds from clothing.

• Inspect and towel down watercraft between uses.

• Remove burrs from pets.

Tough burrs in thick fur can be helped out with a pinch of coconut oil.

• Stay on marked trails as much as possible.

Help keep this great marathon tradition alive and unchanged, and enjoy your time in the company of the AuSable River and its people.

Saturday July 10 - C-2 race from Cooke Dam to the finish line of the AuSable River Canoe Marathon, at the AuSable Inn. Registration begins at 7:00am at Cooke Dam, with the race starting at 9:00 a.m. The winning time is about 2.5 hrs.

There is an MCRA picnic following the C-2 race at the American Legion Pavilion. Donation proceeds go to benefit the MCRA Canoers Memorial on River Rd. Eating begins around 12:30 p.m. with awards following.

Sunday July 11 - C-1 Race. Registration at Childrens Park in AuSable starts at 8:00 a.m. The race starts at 10:00 a.m. at Childrens Park. The Race Course: Paddlers will race 2 laps from Childrens Park to round a buoy just downstream of the railroad trestle bridge and back. Winning time is about 1 hr.

In Memory of Michael Taggart The Marathon community lost a great fan and financial supporter with the passing of Michael Taggart on Marathon day 2019. He lived in California and spent part of each summer and fall at his home on Higgins Lake.

Michael had a particular interest in the Time Trials. He was often seen sitting near the river’s edge at Penrods and the Old AuSable as the teams made their way past one by one.

Michael assisted the Marathon committee in numerous ways over the past several years including being a Contributing Sponsor, Sponsor of the Leader Bonus Program, Sponsor of the Michigan Paddlers Bonus, Sponsor of the Basketball/Football toss at the Opening Program plus much more.

Michael’s daughter Rebecca and son Michael have pledged to continue supporting the Marathon effort.

They will sponsor the 2021 Michigan Paddlers Bonus originally established by Michael several years ago, plus provide other financial support of the Committee as well as individual teams.

Protecting Our Environment For Future Generations Consumers Energy’s Plan Puts Focus on Planet

Each year, Mother Nature puts on a show the last weekend of July for spectators across the world.

Whether it’s the aroma of fresh flowers on the river bank, the sight of a two-person team gliding through a moonbeam rippling in the river’s current or the soothing sounds of the barred owl – there are a variety of reasons for fans to make the journey to Northern Michigan for the Au Sable Canoe Marathon (July 24 and 25).

Whatever the draw, there’s no denying Michigan’s waters are the heart of the race. Its conditions and moods cause paddlers to make adjustments on the fly depending on how the river is behaving. Competitors can find mirror-smooth conditions on a dam’s pond and minutes later be fighting to stay upright in roiling rapids that make them question why they signed up to be there at 2 a.m. on a chilly morning.

At Consumers Energy, we want this race and Mother Nature’s accompanying show to be enjoyed by future generations for years to come. That’s why we take our role as environmental stewards to protect the river and land around it so seriously. It’s also why we developed our Clean Energy Plan.

Since 2017, we’ve already reduced water use by nearly 900 million gallons and enhanced, protected or restored over 2,200 acres of land through activities such as volunteer cleanup and habitat restoration projects.

Our steps to protect the environment will enable future generations to enjoy the many splendors offered by the AuSable River and hydros along the path of the race.

Alcohol is prohibited on Consumers Energy property, including at the dams along the Marathon route. Also, no loitering will be allowed when crossing dams. These implementations are due to strict Homeland Security procedures. Please be respectful of the people who are enforcing these rules and procedures.

Crawford County-Stephan, Wakeley and McMasters bridges will be closed to all vehicle traffic during the race. Spectator vehicles will not be allowed to cross the river at these bridges.

Oscoda County-Parmalee Bridge will be closed to spectators but passable for vehicles. No portable lighting will be available. If you are viewing the race from here, there are good sites along the campground on the north side or at the public access site on the south.

Mio Dam-Spectators are not allowed on the spillway. There is a walkway from the MDOT parking area, south of M-72, under the bridge to the dam. You will not have to walk across the highway to get to the dam. Spectators must stay clear of the pathway and the put-in areas as the teams portage Mio Dam. 4001 Bridge-The U.S. Forest Service may issue tickets for parking in the lot at the boat launch site without the valid parking pass.

Alcona Dam-Only feeders and officials will be allowed into the dam parking lot. Spectators should park in the field on the north side of the river and walk across the bridge to the portage area.

Loud Dam-There will only be parking for feeders on one side of the road leading to the dam.

Only feeders and officials will be allowed into the dam parking lot.

Five Channels-Pedestrians and vehicles will not be permitted on the new bridge, but spectators are allowed on the old bridge. Parking in the dam parking lot is for feeders only. Spectators can park in a large field at the top of the hill on the south side of the river.

Whirlpool near Oscoda-Everyone must park in the parking lot — not at the boat launch. The U.S. Forest Service will issue tickets at this area.

Foote Dam-The dam will be closed to spectators but you can view the race from the new fishing platforms across the river.

Young Paddler Pushes To Achieve Goals

My name is Zachary Childs. I’m 18 years old and I’ve been the youngest competitor in the AuSable River Canoe Marathon during the last three marathons. In 2017, just over a month after I turned 15, I competed in my first marathon. Unfortunately, due to illness, we did not finish that year, but we didn’t give up and completed the marathon in 2018 and 2019.

I’m not from a family who has a history in the sport of canoe racing, but the Childs family have been avid spectators of the ARCM for many years. My father, Ryan, who had spectated most of his life, always had a desire to give the marathon a try.

In 2015, he bought our first racing canoe, a Gillies, from someone at the marathon time trials. The following summer (2016), with little knowledge of canoe racing, we started training on the Kawkawlin River near our home in Bay City.

As luck would have it, we found out that a family friend knew a marathon paddler from our hometown, Chuck Hewitt. The friend put us in contact with Chuck and in the summer of 2016, we paddled with him and Erin Thompson for the first time. Chuck quickly became our mentor and generously shared his many years of paddling knowledge.

With Chuck’s encouragement we decided to enter the 2017 Marathon. Chuck’s son Chris, who also paddled in the ARCM at the age of 15, offered encouragement and advice throughout the spring and summer. Chuck’s wife, Sue Hewitt, provided a wealth of knowledge and information to my mom and our feed team to prepare them for the marathon.

That first year Chuck not only mentored us, but he wanted to help us succeed in completing the marathon so much so that a couple weeks

before the marathon, he told my father and me that he wanted us to use his V1 canoe in the race. (The V1 is a much more stable canoe for rookie paddlers than the Gillies).

I think that many people who spectate the marathon may not realize all of the training and planning that goes into preparing for the event. Without the Hewitt family’s support, it would have taken us years to figure out the ins and outs to be prepared to attempt the Marathon.

Our goal in 2017 was to complete the marathon. My mom thought it was going to be a “one and done” bucket list event...we’d complete the race, get it out of our system and go about living our normal lives.

Boy, was she wrong! Although we didn’t complete the marathon on that first attempt, we did purchase our own JD Pro II canoe right after the 2017 season ended so we could start training for the 2018 marathon.

Fast forward to 2018: fueled by the desire to finish the marathon, we started training sooner and competed in more MCRA races to prepare. During this training season, we paddled alongside Chuck and Erin again, but we also met and trained with other veteran paddlers who Chuck introduced us to like Lynne Witte, Fred Mills, Bernie Tuszynski and Dwight Walker.

expertise with us. Due to the many hours spent training with so many experienced paddlers, we crossed the finish line in 18 hours and 9 minutes in 2018. I can’t even begin to explain the way this felt; it was one of the greatest moments of my life.

For the 2019 season my dad and I switched positions, I moved to the stern and he to the bow. We were much faster in our new positions and were excited to start the marathon in the 42nd position. We completed the Marathon in 17 hours and 14 minutes. In this same season I was lucky enough to have two top ten MCRA race finishes and trained and raced with some of the younger paddlers like Sean Brabrant, Kyle Stonehouse and Bill Mahaffy.

COVID-19 had an impact on the last few months of my senior year of high school. I was faced with a lot of disappointments: prom was cancelled, there was no commencement ceremony and my graduation party had to be postponed. The biggest disappointment for me, by far, was the cancellation of the marathon. For all the disappointments that 2020 brought, there were some bright spots.

Carson Burmeister, a young paddler from Grayling, relocated near my town and was looking for paddlers to train with. We started paddling together in March and it was clear from the start that there was a lot I could learn from him.

The support and encouragement of so many of the other paddlers is what makes this such a great sport. I can’t wait to see what the future holds, and I hope one day to be a mentor to others and pass on the knowledge that has been shared with me by so many great paddlers.

A Family Affair

Au Sable Canoe Marathon, An Adventure Like No Other The last weekend in July has been circled on the calendars of Rob and L.J. Bourgeois for two years.

It’s a fourth opportunity for the brothers to join forces for an adventure like no other: the adrenaline-fueled, emotionally draining and world-renowned Au Sable Canoe Marathon.

The two have been relishing the opportunity to compete in two different roles during the 120-mile race. It starts in downtown Grayling at 9 p.m. July 24 and ends about 19 hours later in Oscoda – with lots of paddling in the moonlight.

“It’s all I think and talk about,” said L.J., the younger of the two brothers who will race in the event.

“I’m sure I drive people crazy, especially my wife. I really don’t know how she puts up with me. And she still has a few months of dealing with me,” he said with a laugh.

Rob Bourgeois is a Consumers Energy employee who will not only be volunteering at the world-class race, but also will be a “feeder” for his brother for the third time.

That role provides the nourishment and encouragement to an assigned racer at various stops.

Rollercoaster of Emotions “You get excited and you get pretty emotional,” said Robert, 48. “It’s a rollercoaster of emotions. It’s an adventure

that’s for sure.”

In 2016, Rob gave food and supplies to his brother at a dozen stops along the way, including an extra paddle that was needed after one broke.

“Besides giving him fluids and nutrients, I had to monitor his health, since he’s exhausted, it’s the middle of the night and he’s wet. It’s very easy to get hypothermia.”

L.J., 44, said he’s had crippling aches and pains during the marathon that he has never experienced in other high intensity activities.

And that includes training in the Marines and for mixed martial arts matches.

“There are times that you are in agony and question why you are doing the race,” L.J. said. “Your hands hurt and your fingers don’t want to bend. Then you feel pain in another area like your leg and all of the sudden your hands and fingers feel better. It’s really a crazy sensation.”

To get ready for the competition, which was on hiatus last year, L.J. has jogged hundreds of miles, including a 50k ultra marathon.

“Basically, it was me, my backpack with drink bladder and the trails with a cell phone for emergencies. I also concentrated on a lot of gym work for my first time. I am hoping to be more ready than ever.,” said L.J. L.J. added that his feed team – his wife

Danielle, brother Rob and friend Steve – were a critical component to his race weekend.

“I put literally hundreds of hours into this every year and it could all come crashing down during the race if anything gets messed up or goes unnoticed,” he said.

“They know me very well, they know how to read my moods and judge my health and condition.”

L.J. recalled the first year when Rob fed him when they met on the Mio Dam. “The exchange went something like, ‘how ya doing?’ I said ‘OK’ he said ‘are you hurt or anything major?’ I said ‘everything hurts and I’m tired as hell.’ He said ‘so your good then?’

I said ‘yep.’ The team was told he’s good it’s going as planned.”

Everlasting Bonds The brothers said the best part of being in the race is watching the racing teams and spectators who bring life to it.

“It’s amazing the bonds that you make with other racers and feed teams,” said Rob. “They are everlasting.”

During one race, Rob witnessed a racer in her 70s cramping up during the competition with her grandson.

“You can just tell she didn’t want to let him down,” he said.

Rob led the chant of “let’s go grandma” with other spectators and racing teams.

“She battled through it and finished,” he said. “That’s what this race is all about.

People and perseverance.”

The Next Generation Rob said his brother is constantly trying to get him to join as his racing partner.

“One of these years, I will get him to race,” L.J. said with a laugh.

But Rob has no interest in being in the canoe. “That’s not going to happen,” said Rob with a chuckle. “My vision of canoeing is floating with a beverage in my hand – not the same as his.”

Rob said he will continue to be a feeder as long as his brother will have him.

“It’s nice to have your brother’s trust,” he said. “This year I am very much looking forward to hugging him at the end of this race and celebrating with a bon fire and a nice big feast.”

L.J. is hopeful another family member will consider joining him in about eight years: his daughter Avery.

“She’s nine now and she’s been awesome, really supportive of me doing this,” he said. “Hopefully if she takes me up on being my partner, the tradition will continue with her and her family one day.”

Marathon Scholarship Program Continues to Grow

In 2017, the Marathon Committee created a scholarship fund in an effort to be more proactive within the communities. Our original goal was to award 3 scholarships: * One to a graduating senior from Grayling High School * One to a graduating senior from Oscoda High School * One to a graduating senior who was the son, daughter or grandchild of a Marathon paddler The committee agreed that no money from its general operating budget would be used to finance these scholarships. All money for the scholarship fund would be raised from special fundraisers and/or donations. Based on the strong community response to the program, the Marathon Committee added a fourth scholarship in 2020. This new scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior from Mio AuSable High School. Prior to 2021, the Marathon has awarded $7000 in scholarships.

This year’s awards will bring the total to $10,000.

Applications are distributed to the High Schools each year for eligible seniors to apply; the Paddler Scholarship is available on the Marathon website at www. ausablecanoemarathon.org. All applicants must be enrolled in a two-year or four-year college degree program, or enrolled in an approved trade school. All four awards will be equal amounts. The scholarship selection is based on a combination of academic performance and community service. The financial income or assets of the family will not be a factor. The 2021 scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $750. The winners of each scholarship will be announced at the Awards Night held at their respective high schools. The winner of the “Paddler Award” will be announced on the Marathon Facebook page. Each recipient’s name and school will be published in the Marathon Spectator Guide in July. The winners will also be invited to the pre-race program before the start of the race in Grayling. In addition, the winners will also be invited to attend the VIP areas in Grayling and Oscoda during the Marathon.

Although there was not a race in 2020, the Marathon committee did award four Marathon Scholarships. Congratulations to: Emma Doederlein, Paddler Award; Gage Davis, Grayling High School; Lauren Langley, Oscoda High School and Lexus Marsh, Mio AuSable High School. We would also like to congratulate our 2021 scholarship winners: Katelyn Moore, Grayling High School; Anna Roy, Oscoda High School; and Sierra Lunning, Mio AuSable High School. The Marathon Committee congratulates all of you and wishes you the best in your future endeavors.
