Stitching Together A COMMUNITY WITH LOVE

Aurora’s Quilting Bee works year-round to create one-of-a-kind patchwork creations to sell at their Spring and Winter quilt sales. Founded in 1995, this year marks the 31st anniversary of the volunteer-based Quilt Bee and the annual Spring Quilt Sale.

“We are the best kept secret in Aurora,” said Patty Hicks, who leads the Quilt Bee. “We put on display normally 300 to 400 quilts. We are busy women.” In a world of commerce that prioritizes immediate gratification at the lowest cost possible, Aurora’s Quilting Bee is a shining example of the community connection that can be sometimes missed in modern-day society. “We can probably go home and sew in our sewing rooms and not talk to anybody for days on end, but that’s no fun,” said Hicks. “We want to show off what we are doing, and we want to talk to people.”

With a volunteer group that has members that range in ages from lates 20s to early 80s, one thing that remains constant is their commitment to their craft.

Why Purchase an Aurora Quilting Bee Quilt?

Eco-friendly: Quilts are 100% cotton, including batting. Each quilted item is made from repurposed fabric that has been donated to the Quilting Bee. If fabric doesn’t end up being part of a quilt it will get repurposed into something else, ensuring no piece goes to waste.

One-of-a-kind: Each patchwork masterpiece is handstitched with love by the Quilting Bee. Volunteers are experts at their craft and have decades of experience. All quilted items are completely unique, just like the loved ones they are intended for.

Affordable: There are quilted items for all budgets. Items on sale can be as low as $5. Quilts range in price from $125 to $400, depending on their complexity and size. Quilts are made by volunteers to support the center, so you are likely to purchase a quilt at a much lower price than you would through a retailer.

Support your community: All proceeds from our quilt sales go back to the Aurora Center for Active Adults donation fund. These funds are then used to purchase items to support the center or put towards programs that benefit Aurora’s older adult community.

The city of Aurora’s Quilting Bee invites you to find the perfect one-of-a-kind gift for your loved ones at their annual Spring Quilt Sale, taking place Tuesday, April 28 to Saturday, May 2 at the Aurora Center for Active Adults, 30 Del Mar Circle. Visit AuroraGov.org/ACAAEvents to get a preview of the items that will be on sale and to learn more about the sale.

Level Guide

PARENT AND TOT

Ages 6 months to 2 years

Level 1: An introductory class for parents and very young children, Parent and Tot 1 uses songs, games and toys to help your baby gain confidence, learn basic swim skills and develop safe habits around the water. Each child must be accompanied in the pool by a parent or guardian (one adult in the water per child.) Swim diapers required.

Level 2: To qualify for level 2, child must be comfortable fully submerging underwater and be able to sit and stand independently. Parent and Tot 2 prepares very young swimmers to transition to independent swim lessons. Emphasis on adjusting to swimming with an instructor rather than a parent, following directions and increasing autonomy in their swim skills. Each child must be accompanied in the pool by a parent or guardian. Swim diapers required.

GUPPY

Ages 3 to 5

Level 1: Guppy 1 introduces young children to independent swim lessons. Emphasis on working through separation anxiety, water adjustment, learning the rules of swim lessons and basic breath control. Parents will be asked to stay back from the pool edge. Swim diapers are required if child is not potty trained.

Level 2: To qualify for level 2, child must be reliable at holding the wall during lessons, comfortable fully submerging underwater and comfortable laying in a back-float position (with instructor support). Guppy 2 teaches basic water survival and self-rescue skills to young children. Emphasis on independent movement through the water, independent floating and intermediate breath control. Swim diapers are required if your child is not potty trained.

Level 3: To qualify for Guppy 3, child must pass the following swim test: Jump into deep water, recover to a back-float position, then swim or float five yards to the wall and climb out independently. If child is not able to pass this swim test on day 1, they will not be able to continue in this level. Guppy 3 lays technical foundation for basic stroke techniques. Emphasis on head/hip alignment and propulsive kick technique.

Level 4: By instructor recommendation only. Guppy 4 builds confidence and independence in basic stroke techniques for very strong young swimmers. Emphasis on head/hip alignment and simultaneous arm/leg action.

Stingray 3 teaches and reinforces proper technique and timing across all major swim strokes, with emphasis on simultaneous arm/leg actions and building endurance. Stingray 3 also introduces headfirst entry (dives).

Level 4: To qualify for Stingray 4, child must swim 25 yards with good technique in front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. Child must demonstrate ability to tread for two minutes in deep water, surface dive to 10 feet and perform a safe standing dive into deep water. Refines technique across all swim strokes, emphasis on stamina building and streamlining for efficiency. Introduces legal transitions between lengths.

City of Aurora Recreation Center Amenities You Might Be Overlooking

The city of Aurora has five recreation centers with each location having specialized amenities, fitness classes and activities.

When residents think about recreation centers, they often think of workout machines, free weights, swimming pools and gymnasiums.

Yes, Aurora has all of those things and more, including the list of sometimes overlooked amenities below that provide even more value to our members.

INTRODUCTION CLASSES

Don’t know where to start? Our staff are here to help with introductory classes. Having personal sessions with a fitness trainer is valuable as it assists in preventing injury, helps members use and learn about gym equipment and - let’s be honest - the extra motivation is fun with one-on-one personal training.

Group fitness classes are fun. You get hands-on coaching from staff, it’s social and you get to spend time with like-minded individuals during classes. Purchase a day pass or sign up for a membership to gain access to a recreation center near you. Learn more about memberships at AuroraGov.org/Recreation_Centers

TRX CIRCUIT TRAINING

Our Southeast Recreation Center is set-up for TRX (total resistance exercise) classes. This form of suspension training uses specialized equipment and body weight exercises to gain strength, flexibility and a stronger core.

SPECIALTY CLASSES

Keep learning! Aurora has a number of specialty classes to choose from. Don’t be intimidated - not everyone knows what these classes are. Unsure of what Barre+, HathaYoga, Vinyasa Yoga or Yogalates really are? We have you covered. Read all about these specialty classes and give one a try.

For the athletes, there are benefits to signing up for these specialty classes as well. They will improve flexibility, balance, mobility, strength and more.

FLAG FOOTBALL

Touchdown! Join the fun with our Youth Football Program where teamwork, friendships and memories are built to last a lifetime.

Players will participate in practices and play in exciting games where they will learn nuances of flag football. Youth sports help kids learn teamwork, communication, leadership and sportsmanship.

Flag football programs take place across facilities in the city like Southeast Recreation Center and Olympic Park.

For more information, please contact Todd Steinkamp, Sports Recreation Supervisor, at tsteinka@auroragov.org or Reed Davis, Recreation Specialist, at rdavis@auroragov.org.

Users will learn how to start, stop and adjust settings on machines. Call 720.859.4999 to schedule an appointment.

ESPORTS

This one is for the gamers. Our eSports hubs in Aurora provides safe locations for video game users to connect and compete with likeminded friends.

The hub at Expo Community Center has 10 gaming computers, six consoles and an area for 22 gamers and spectators to watch the action. You asked and we listened. Due to growing demand, the eSports program has expanded to Central and Southeast Recreation Centers.

Check out the new spaces during your next visit. Access to eSports is included with center entry and membership! For more information, visit AuroraGov.org/eSports
