Stitching Together A COMMUNITY WITH LOVE
Aurora’s Quilting Bee works year-round to create one-of-a-kind patchwork creations to sell at their Spring and Winter quilt sales. Founded in 1995, this year marks the 31st anniversary of the volunteer-based Quilt Bee and the annual Spring Quilt Sale.
“We are the best kept secret in Aurora,” said Patty Hicks, who leads the Quilt Bee. “We put on display normally 300 to 400 quilts. We are busy women.” In a world of commerce that prioritizes immediate gratification at the lowest cost possible, Aurora’s Quilting Bee is a shining example of the community connection that can be sometimes missed in modern-day society. “We can probably go home and sew in our sewing rooms and not talk to anybody for days on end, but that’s no fun,” said Hicks. “We want to show off what we are doing, and we want to talk to people.”
With a volunteer group that has members that range in ages from lates 20s to early 80s, one thing that remains constant is their commitment to their craft.
Why Purchase an Aurora Quilting Bee Quilt?
Eco-friendly: Quilts are 100% cotton, including batting. Each quilted item is made from repurposed fabric that has been donated to the Quilting Bee. If fabric doesn’t end up being part of a quilt it will get repurposed into something else, ensuring no piece goes to waste.
One-of-a-kind: Each patchwork masterpiece is handstitched with love by the Quilting Bee. Volunteers are experts at their craft and have decades of experience. All quilted items are completely unique, just like the loved ones they are intended for.
Affordable: There are quilted items for all budgets. Items on sale can be as low as $5. Quilts range in price from $125 to $400, depending on their complexity and size. Quilts are made by volunteers to support the center, so you are likely to purchase a quilt at a much lower price than you would through a retailer.
Support your community: All proceeds from our quilt sales go back to the Aurora Center for Active Adults donation fund. These funds are then used to purchase items to support the center or put towards programs that benefit Aurora’s older adult community.
The city of Aurora’s Quilting Bee invites you to find the perfect one-of-a-kind gift for your loved ones at their annual Spring Quilt Sale, taking place Tuesday, April 28 to Saturday, May 2 at the Aurora Center for Active Adults, 30 Del Mar Circle. Visit AuroraGov.org/ACAAEvents to get a preview of the items that will be on sale and to learn more about the sale.

City of Aurora Recreation Center Amenities You Might Be Overlooking
The city of Aurora has five recreation centers with each location having specialized amenities, fitness classes and activities.
When residents think about recreation centers, they often think of workout machines, free weights, swimming pools and gymnasiums.
Yes, Aurora has all of those things and more, including the list of sometimes overlooked amenities below that provide even more value to our members.
INTRODUCTION CLASSES
Don’t know where to start? Our staff are here to help with introductory classes. Having personal sessions with a fitness trainer is valuable as it assists in preventing injury, helps members use and learn about gym equipment and - let’s be honest - the extra motivation is fun with one-on-one personal training.
Group fitness classes are fun. You get hands-on coaching from staff, it’s social and you get to spend time with like-minded individuals during classes. Purchase a day pass or sign up for a membership to gain access to a recreation center near you. Learn more about memberships at AuroraGov.org/Recreation_Centers
TRX CIRCUIT TRAINING
Our Southeast Recreation Center is set-up for TRX (total resistance exercise) classes. This form of suspension training uses specialized equipment and body weight exercises to gain strength, flexibility and a stronger core.

This one is for the gamers. Our eSports hubs in Aurora provides safe locations for video game users to connect and compete with likeminded friends.

What do you love most about working in Aurora’s Parks, Recreation and Open Space?
What I love most about working in Aurora's Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department is being part of a team that values inclusion, innovation and community impact. I take pride in creating engaging programs like STEM-focused eSports with LEGO robotics, Minecraft engineering and coding, all while making eSports accessible to individuals of all ages and abilities. I’ve helped expand the eSports program to more community centers, participated in local events and partnered with school eSports clubs to provide spaces for practice and competition. It’s meaningful work that truly reflects public service.
What’s one fun fact about you?
I enjoy working with my hands and being creative through woodworking and various home projects.
