Norwich Victoria Sidings CLIENT

Greater Anglia Abellio

VALUE c. £10m LOCATION

Norwich

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Aureos was awarded the multidisciplinary designbuild contract for Norwich Victoria Sidings project in April 2019. The project was to upgrade and renew train sidings to enable stabling capacity for trains to accommodate the increased passenger service and to incorporate the renewal of adjacent structures and conductors on the Great Eastern Main Line.

AUREOS | Capability Document | 2025

84

Several structures needed to be installed in close proximity. We were required to construct a 350m retaining wall adjacent to the North West siding construction, in addition to a number of cantilevered OLE structures over the sidings. The space available adjacent to the retaining wall was insufficient. Therefore, Aureos designed a bespoke solution whereby the foundations were incorporated into the retaining wall, providing sufficient space for a compliant walkway to be constructed. Furthermore, upon receiving the GRIP 3 documentation from the client, Aureos established an issue associated with the installation of gantry columns between the sidings & main line. Through GRIP 4 and 5 we redeveloped designs to extend the lengths of the gantries to span the sidings and the existing main line track, eliminating any issues with line of site between train drivers and the signal box. The extended gantries upgraded existing assets and removed redundant structures, decreasing maintenance requirements along the asset. During the design stage, Aureos proposed the introduction of an innovative and environmentally friendly product to alleviate walkway issues. Both Cabling and a walkway were required between each siding, however the space between each siding was insufficient for the cable route to run adjacent to the walking route. We proposed the use of TroTred units which provide a system to incorporate the cabling route beneath the walking route. The product complies with Network Rail’s standards and provided significant programme benefits whilst reducing imported materials and use of mobile plant should we have installed the conventional concrete alternative. The integration of this solution allowed Aureos to operate across all 4 sidings concurrently rather than sequentially if mobile plant was required. The 350m bespoke OLE foundations and retaining wall required backfilling. The original design required virgin aggregates to backfill the structure. Furthermore, during inspection of the proposed area for perimeter fencing we determined that the existing topography of the site needed to be brought to level prior to installing the fencing. We designed a solution which utilised over 80% of the spoil derived from an earthworks cut, to construct the sidings, as material to backfill the retaining wall and level the site for fencing, rather than sending this site won material to landfill.

Manningtree Platform 1 Project NEAT CLIENT

Bombardier

VALUE c. £12m LOCATION

Manningtree Station

PROJECT DESCRIPTION As part of Bombardier’s £800m investment to modernise the Eastern Region’s passenger fleet with new Class 720 rolling stock, Aureos was engaged to deliver infrastructure enhancements across multiple stations. At Manningtree Station, we undertook critical upgrade works on Platform 1 to accommodate the longer, more efficient trains, while ensuring greater passenger safety, comfort, and operational reliability.

AUREOS | Capability Document | 2025

86

Working under a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary Design & Build contract, Aureos self-delivered the permanent way, OLE, and civils scope, supported by trusted supply chain partners for signalling, telecoms, and power. Acting as Lead Design Organisation (LDO), we managed the full GRIP 1–8 lifecycle—achieving Entry Into Service within a condensed eleven-month period. Our integrated project management approach enabled early constructibility reviews, efficient approvals, and seamless coordination across disciplines and stakeholders, including Network Rail and Bombardier. Key works at Manningtree included: • 150m Cat 16 track renewal, upgrading from timber to G44 concrete sleepers and new rail • 80m of platform coper adjustments to support new train alignments • OLE geometry modifications and cantilever replacement • Removal and replacement of the existing buffer stop with a new RAWIE fixed buffer to improve site safety and access Due to deteriorating asset conditions, additional remedial work was required. Aureos proposed valueengineered solutions that combined gauging and track renewal, improving long-term reliability and reducing future maintenance costs. Early client engagement and flexibility allowed these enhancements to be implemented efficiently and cost-effectively. Over the wider NEAT package, we successfully delivered over 395 hours of disruptive and 550 hours of non-disruptive works with minimal impact to train services. During the core works at Manningtree, 2 of 3 platforms remained open - achieved through careful staging, plant segregation, and live environment safety protocols. Sustainability and Carbon: Reduction In line with Aureos’ carbon reduction goals, we implemented a Battery Storage Unit (BSU) on site. The BSU reduced generator runtime by 85%, saved 2,640L of fuel, and avoided 6,996kg of CO₂ emissions delivering cost savings and contributing to broader sustainability targets. Health, Safety & Collaboration: The project maintained a zero LTIFR and was delivered with no major incidents, underpinned by our ISO 45001 compliant safety management system. An Alliance style collaboration with Bombardier and supply chain partners ensured transparent communication, adaptive planning, and a shared focus on project outcomes.

The completed works will accommodate the new rolling stock and a number of critical improvements to the existing infrastructure across Hertfordshire. At St Margarets, works also included replacement of rails though a public crossing. These works were coordinated though Hertfordshire County Council and took place with a pre-planned road closure. We also installed an under road crossing (URX) at Ware Level Crossing, to enable us to run high voltage and low voltage cables from one side of the crossing to the other. Aureos were responsible for the GRIP stages 5-8. The works involved include: platform extensions, installation of 2 x conventional DV crossovers, 1 x conventional DV turnout and associated plain line, installation of OLE equipment, installation of new signal structures and associated signalling equipment (including signalling data change), installation of operational and non-operational telecoms equipment, installation of various LOR civils assets including troughing routes, walkways and concrete foundations. Our works involved the installation of track to mainline standards in excess of 800m throughout the three stations. We removed Removal of redundant track components and installation of new track including the installation of two DV crossovers, one DV turnout and associated plain line. Remodelled the loop line at Ware, to accommodate an 80m platform extension. Our works involved building an access road at Hertford East along the site perimeter, allowing site vehicular access from the main highway for material delivery. Existing services (HV cables and signalling cables) were present necessitating a temporary works design to protect existing assets which were protected with bulk timbers and steel plates.

Aureos were involved from GRIP4 design and subsequently informed the planning, integration and remodelling of the route through one of the most complex and congested rail infrastructure areas within the UK. This included both Track, OLE, Civils and Signalling remodelling works at Shenfield station, Gidea Park station, Harold Wood station, Ilford, Chadwell Heath, Romford and Stratford. All upgrades from Stratford through to Shenfield were to allow the Train Operator to run longer trains on the route, with a key part of the scheme being a new bay platform giving more capacity at Shenfield. At Shenfield and Gidea Park, we installed new sidings with train access points at both ends, as well as installing a run round track at Gidea Park. Over the delivery of this upgrade, Aureos installed: 4695m of plain line track, including 3 new sidings) at Shenfield and Brentwood Turnback and 1810m of Plan Line Track, including remodelling of 5 existing sidings at Gidea Park. At Shenfield & Brentwood Turnback, we also installed 29 units of S&C and 6 units of S&C at Gidea Park. This was a highly specialist and ambitious package of works for essential national infrastructure, with keen public and political interest. Delivering to time and programme was of utmost importance to both our client, Costain, and the ultimate client, Crossrail. We took a leading role in the integration of the works with Costain’s wider programme, preparing detailed construction staging and phasing which allowed other subcontractors to build their programme around our schedule of key works.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION This project involved the construction of 633 Overhead line foundations, 895 overhead line structures, 777 cantilevers, E&P, signalling and OLE traction bonding to name a few as part of the upgrades to the TransPennine Route.

The project is being fulfilled on complete self-delivery, with a site team that manned between 1 and 3 Aureos Plant machines, dependent on possession and works. Our key milestones have been split into EIS (entry into service) stages. To date we’ve hit all EIS dates on time and are now approaching EIS stages 6, 7 & 8. Due to the weather across the Pennines Aureos developed a Cantilever restraint that lock the cantilever into a safe position and would withstand a higher wind load and not fail when left over time. Due to the success of the restraint the Project had a full design created so it can be available across the industry. This was a multidisciplinary project (Track, Lineside Civils, Major Civils, E&P) so required us to work closely alongside multiple contractors involved with other disciplines and providing support to enable works that required an OLE interface to be completed. We provided OLE Component Staff with the opportunity to attend DDR (design development reviews), working alongside designers to give input into design constructibility and equipment suitability for certain on-site scenarios, enabling a seamless close out to red line drawings. We arranged traffic management and the closure of highways with local councils (Manchester and Tameside) when working on wall mounted foundations and during the installation of OLE main steel locations. We had several multi-tasking operatives on site, not only reducing the number of people on site but reducing the potential for accidents too. We also used vehicles that could be drove on the road and rail in order to reduce the impact of noise and light pollution of the constant delivery of non-road MEWPs, due to the number of different accesses required to be used. This along with the decision to not use delivery lorries for the MEWPs greatly reduced the carbon emissions on this project. We developed a Bridge Drilling unit to eliminate HAVs (Hand Arm Vibration), remove human error and reduce the exposure to dust. During the trials that we have conducted, the time it was taking an operative drilling a single hole using the standard method was circa 6 minutes, the Drilling Machine was completing 4 holes to the same spec in 3 minutes - increasing productivity by 80%. Both methods require a on track plant, 2 x MEWP for the standard method and 1x MEWP accompanied with the Drilling machine for the alternative method. 93

94

This project utilised dedicated skilled labour workforce, innovative plant and fabrication supply chain to successfully deliver weekly major renewal on the OCS network on an existing operational line without any customer impact on one of the busiest freight routes in the country. The core design for LTS was undertaken by NR’s incumbent design contractor, Furrer + Frey. With our in-house design team, we undertook the design and implementation of the isolation diagrams and instructions for the system operational literature. Aureos owned this process from start to finish by identifying the changes and aligned the system changes to our program, requesting master files, designing updates, holding required reviews with the NR project team and stakeholders, and submitting the resulting updates to NR STE. During this process, we also undertook legacy errors in these documents, correcting them as part of project delivery. Working with the project team and the local authorities 44No Full road/ level crossing closures were mitigated by the production and deployment of a project specific level crossing management plan. This Aureos produced plan allowed the OTP to work and operate to rolling stock rules, closing crossings as and when required providing the following benefits: • 100% more program flexibility - with the T-12 application time-scale removed, • Removal of rate and cost of lost work owing to the factors above. • Zero cost for traffic management consultancy that would otherwise have to have been contracted. During the project we have been called out to three separate de-wirement emergencies at Bentley, Stratford and Fobbing during unsociable hours. Our team were able to attend and establish control of this situation as PC on site, quickly and skilfully. Our expert engineering discipline were able to quickly establish cause of the issue and with use of our internal design team, establish necessary engineering solutions. Our Construction Management team efficiently dealt with local landowners and traffic management, to secure the area safely and protect the general public as well as the asset.

Eglinton Crosstown LRT CLIENT

Metrolinx

VALUE c. £40m LOCATION

Toronto, Canada

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit (ECLRT), commonly referred to as Crosstown, is part of Metrolinx’s 25-year regional transportation plan for the Greater Toronto area, launched in 2008 called The Big Move.

AUREOS | Capability Document | 2025

96

Crosstown is a $5.5bn, 19km light rail transit (LRT) line being constructed from Kennedy Station to Mount Dennis (Weston Road) in Toronto, Canada. Approximately 10km of the line will be located underground and up to 26 stations will be built along the stretch. Aureos has been awarded the contract to install the mainline infrastructure and wayside equipment that supports the Bombardier CITYFLO 650 system; a Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) moving block solution developed by Bombardier Transportation (BT) for new or existing mass transit and urban rail applications. The CITYFLO 650 solution achieves high reliability by applying a distributed wayside structure and full utilization of redundancy principles with the wayside and onboard equipment. The Eglinton project is a fast moving build which Aureos assists on its progression by also undertaking design reviews and multi-discipline integration, where unforeseen design clashes are uncovered requiring a buildable solution to the specific site conditions to be identified. This has allowed the project to progress and enabled the achievement of significant staged milestones. The Eglinton project is complex in its construction with multiple stakeholders and station projects running in parallel. Aureos’ scope runs the full length of the mainline and as such requires Aureos to be flexible in its approach to allow all contractors to integrate and continue to work to tight timeframes. Works include; • Siemens 750DC Overhead Catenary System • Signalling infrastructure & wayside equipment • Tunnel Lighting • Fibre Optic Communications • Medium Voltage DC Cabling • CCTV, ANC & Stray Current • Guideway Intrusion & Detection • Switch Machine Heater Control & Power
