About the Guest booklet This booklet contains an overview of the International Bachelor of Law Programme of The Hague University of Applied Sciences and its Employment Network Event. We intend to highlight several aspects of the programme and the students of particular relevance and interest to prospective employers.

It is a source of great pride for the students, faculty members and administrative staff alike that, just four years after its inception, our Law Programme was recognized in 2014, 2015 and 2016 as the best Bachelor of Law Programme in the Netherlands.

We, the organisers of the Employment Network Event, (the sole job fair organised by a Dutch University focusing on International and EU law employment), are delighted to give the floor to the representatives of that professional and international programme of Law studies; the students.

When the Employment Network Event was created in 2010, it was impossible to envision that it would not only generate enthusiasm and interest on the part of employers and potential employees, but also result in so many connections between the two, including more than 220 internship offers to our students both within and outside the Netherlands.

This year, 2018, we welcome all of you reading this booklet to the seventh annual Employment Network Event, organized with the ambition of facilitating contact between an even greater numbers of students, universities, employers, as well as providing employers with a platform from which to raise awareness of their organizations and stimulate interest in their activities. It is also an important opportunity for alumni to support the university from which they obtained their first law degree and to forge an even stronger attachment between the students and potential partners of development of the International Bachelor of Law Programme to the city of The Hague, all the international organisations and the University of Applied Sciences.

Preface of the Director of the Faculty Public Management, Safety and Law Esteemed guests, dear students, On behalf of the Academy Public Management, Safety and Law, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of our guests here at the Employment Network Event 2018, organized by the International and European Law Bachelor Programme. Based in the city of Peace and Justice The Hague, this programme is an ambitious Law Programme within the Academy that strives to develop students into high quality professionals who can operate in an international market.

The Employment Network Event serves as a means to acquaint the students with potential employers for their internship and further career opportunities.

Moreover, it aims to acquaint employers to the International Bachelor of Law Programme and its skilled and motivated students, as well as cementing relationships between the Programme and the work field. Both the Programme and I are very pleased to see that the Employment Network Event has grown into an event that is beneficial to both students, employers and the program as a whole.

I would especially like to express our appreciation for the key note speakers who have volunteered to share their knowledge and experience with our students, as well as the many esteemed employers and universities which are represented here today. Your valued presence forms the crucial link between the programme, the employer market and other education organisations. As an Academy and a Programme, we are dedicated to educate the students in such a way that they can enter into your organisation with the competences and skills that your require and expect.

The students who enter higher education today typically come from around the globe, and often bring to that valuable experiences of living in various cultures and speaking multiple languages.

They already come to higher education, therefore, with a broad range of skills in operating at the international, and indeed, transnational level. What a wonderful opportunity it is for us then, as members of higher education institutions from around the world, to meet and share our insights into how students can further hone these skills in a professional context.

It is my pleasure to warmly welcome you at the Employment Network Event 2018 of the International and European Law Bachelor Program. For the sixth time, the Employment Network Event (ENE) is organized at The Hague University of Applied Sciences as a platform for exchanging ideas on how to prepare students for a professional career in the field of international and European law. The city of The Hague, where thousands of professionals come together from all over the world to find better solutions to common problems and work for peace and justice, provides an inspiring context.

The mission of our program is to develop students into internationally competent graduates, and the ENE contributes to that mission in several ways. It connects our students with potential employers and universities to explore together the various career and study options. It provides prospective employers with insights into how we prepare our students for an international career, with emphasis on practice oriented knowledge and skills. It brings together representatives of highly distinguished universities to discuss ideas and share best practices on equipping students for a career in the field of international and European law. It also provides an opportunity to build further collaboration on student and staff exchange and to generate creative ideas on better connecting teaching objectives to market needs. Furthermore, the ENE invites the alumni of our program to share their experience with entering the international job market and to provide our students and lecturers with insights on the knowledge and skills expected from a fresh graduate.

As a lecturer at the International and European Law Bachelor Programme, I would like to invite you to make full use of the opportunities provided by this event. Maria Eva Földes currently works as lecturer in EU law at THUAS. She holds a PhD and a Master’s degree from Central European University, Hungary and a Master’s degree from University of Leuven, Belgium. Before moving to THUAS she worked as assistant professor at the University of Vienna, Institute for European Integration Research and as postdoctoral researcher at Tilburg University, Tilburg Law and Economics Center. She also worked for the Open Society Institute’s Public Health Program, where she coordinated a project that promoted the health rights of vulnerable groups in Central and Eastern Europe with specific focus on the Roma minority.

Her research interests include healthcare governance, the influence of European integration on health systems, social determinants of health, regulation of medicinal products and medical devices, minority rights.

He teaches in the Undergraduate, Master’s and PhD in Law courses at PUC Minas Gerais.

Graduated in Law from the Faculty of Law of the current University Center of Sete Lagoas, Minas Gerais. PhD in Constitutional Law and Master in Civil Law from UFMG. Author of books and scientific articles published in Brazil and abroad.

Public works and most widespread: Constitutional process and Democratic State of Law, Belo Horizonte: Editora Del Rey; Technical Procedure, Belo Horizonte: Editora Del Rey; Systematic Study of the New Code of Civil Procedure (NCPC), Belo Horizonte: Editora D’Plácido. In the work Constitutional Process and Democratic State of Law, the author addresses, among other topics, the participation of the constitutional process in the construction of the Democratic State of Law, the theory of State functions and the exercise of power on behalf of the people, the foundations of Democratic legitimacy of judicial acts, the guiding principles of the jurisdiction in the Democratic State of Law, procedural delays, warning that such practice should be curtailed, in favor of the people, in whose name the State exercises power, being that the text is written masterfully.

When discussing the project of the New Code of Civil Procedure, which came into force in March 2016, Professor Brêtas, as he is better known in the academic community, had an arduous debate with the notorious proceduralist Fredie Didier Júnior, and his thesis prevailed, as explained in his book Constitutional Process and Democratic State of Law. He is a militant lawyer in the area of ​​Civil Law and Constitutional Law. He was Deputy Chief Counsel of the Regional Legal Adviser of Banco do Brasil S.A., in Minas Gerais; Director General of the Superior School of Advocacy and Director Deputy Secretary General of the Brazilian Bar Association - Minas Gerais Section.

He is Honorary Member of the Brazilian Association of Procedural Law; and Member of the Institute of Lawyers of Minas Gerais, Institute of Portuguese Language Law, Popperian Institute of Legal Studies and Pan American Institute of Procedural Law. He is Officer of the Reserve of the Brazilian Army - Arma Artillery since August 3, 1967.

He was awarded by the State of Minas Gerais with the Santos Dumont Medal and the Medal of Inconfidence. Today, Professor Brétas is one of the greatest Brazilian jurists, an expressive name of the so-called Mining School of Process, a great pride for the State of Minas Gerais

“Since 2007 the International & EU Law programme has provided a four year course of legal study to an exceptionally international and multicultural student population. The setting for the LAW programme is a city, renowned for its international law heritage, as evidenced by the continuing presence of a myriad of international organisations with their headquarters or branch offices located here.

In early 2000, the possibility of studying in International & EU law in English in the “legal capital of the world” was a distant dream, but through the efforts of a committed and productive faculty and staff, the LAW programme has set high and competitive standards of professionalism in the delivery of legal education.

The practical focus of the Programme is to prepare students for the realities of the workplace and to be to be operational and competent after graduation at their working place.

The Curriculum provides the opportunity to realize those practical goals by commencing with a strong, comprehensive foundation from which to understand and apply international and EU law in various areas. In successive years, the Programme follows a progression from simple mastery of legal concepts to their more detailed analysis and then finally implementation in a legal setting, be it office, court room, arbitration table and boardroom. The students obtain greater and greater independence in their studies, contemplating that they will enter their career with the ability to perform with a high level of professionalism and solid legal foundation.

Learning by doing is the tradition of the LAW programme and therefore internship and work placements are essential for the accomplishment of our goal to advance knowledgeable legal professionals. That is one of the reasons why we are keen to ensure employers and students are both satisfied, so we can consistently build on the internationalisation and professionalism, celebrated during the annual Employment Network Event.”

TRAINING & EVALUATING THE RESEARCH SKILLS OF THE STUDENTS

On their final year at THUAS, the students are required to write the LL.B. Thesis under the supervision of lecturers who are the experts of the relevant academic fields in which the student chooses to submit the thesis. The LL.B. Thesis enables students to conduct independent and original academic legal research while utilizing the feedback from their supervisors. The process of writing the thesis and performing the Thesis Defense not only in presence of the supervisor but also of the external grader, armor THUAS students with the necessary experience to follow a high-achieving academic career. This valuable experience also prepares the students for professional careers as they acquire the tools to work independently on a six month long project where they are not dictated their responsibilities but instead are responsible for benefiting from the guidance and feedback provided by supervisors.

“Research at the University of Applied Sciences is rooted in questions that are generated from professional practice. Law students develop the ability to provide legal solutions to societal problems. In their course work and academic research training they learn to adopt a methodological approach to applying their knowledge of the law to carry out research into the operation of new and existing laws and regulations for clients or groups of clients.

Student research is stimulated by lecturers who are also engaged in various research activities. Lecturers are encouraged to take part in the multi-disciplinary research groups around which research at The Hague University is organized. Each research group consists of a Lector and lecturer members. Of particular relevance to the Law programme are the research groups on European Integration led by Professor Jaap de Zwaan, the Lectorate of International Peace Justice and Security led by Prof Joris Voorhoeve and the Lectorate of International Cooperation led by Professor Jos Walenkamp.

Research carried out by law lecturers acts a bridge between the educational objectives of the university and the needs of the market. This is in keeping with the ambition of the university to profile itself as a knowledge center that is of relevance to private and public sector institutions. A recent example of such practice oriented research is the High Level Seminar at the Hague University (sponsored by OLAF - The European Anti-fraud office) on how to more effectively sanction corruption offences by multinational corporations.

Lecturers of the law programme have published numerous books as well as articles in international journals. They present papers and seminars across the globe and have conducted workshops and training programs for Judges and other government officials. Some lecturers also maintain blogs about their research to reach a broader audience. Lecturers are often invited speakers at professional conferences and are themselves members of professional associations as well as national and international bodies.

The cycle of research completed to the benefit of all stakeholders in the Law program. As lectures engage in research, they train students to engage in future research. Law lecturers teach what they research and through their research engage in the broader issues that are of concern to professional practice and ultimately to society in general.”

“Students of the LAW Programme are required to write a paper in year 3, progressing to a thesis and its defence before graduation. These two elements of the Programme are compulsory and are designed to sharpen the students’ research and legal analysis skills. During their studies, the students explore a wide range of topics and areas with diverse legal issues. As mentors, we try to foster our students’ ability to develop logical and articulate arguments and sound legal analysis. This process is geared towards preparing them for the type of writing required in their future careers.”

EXTERNAL RESEARCH COLLABORATION AND STAFF ACTION The Bachelor of Law Program is committed to both professional and academic achievement. As regards the latter, a special characteristic of the program relates to Faculty Activity in the field of research. Many Faculty members are promising young researchers in search of exciting new research partnerships. Accordingly, the Bachelor of Law Program is open to partnerships on topical research questions in a variety of fields. Particularly in the light of Internationalization as an overarching HHS objective, the Program is interested in acquiring new and engaging research perspectives through collaboration and partnerships with other academic institutions within and without the European Union. It is hoped that such partnerships will make a dual contribution. On the one hand, they will expand and inform the Body of Knowledge of the courses offered to the students, with a view to making their education as updated, relevant and useful as possible. On the other, such research endeavours are expected to yield concrete research results that will contribute to international legal discourse in their own right.

LEARNING BY DOING The practical focus of the Programme is to prepare students for working in high demanding, international legal settings. Professionalism and Internationalisation aspects are therefore developed as part of the Curriculum. The Curriculum firstly lets students apply international and European law in various areas. Subsequently, students are trained to progress from simple mastery of legal concepts to their more detailed analysis, and ultimately to their final implementation in concrete cases with a cross-border, legal setting. ‘Learning by doing’ is the tradition of the Programme; internships and work placements are therefore essential for the accomplishment of our goal to advance knowledgeable legal professionals. That is why we are keen to ensure employers and students are both satisfied, so we can consistently build on the internationalisation and professionalism aspects, celebrated during the annual Employment Network Event.

ILSA Chapter A student association (a sub-division of the main ILSA organisation) specifically for the Law programme, taking part in organising guest lectures, exam preparation sessions, panel discussions and law-related events.

Exchange programme An attractive combination of learning through experience about different legal traditions and cultures, and travelling outside of The Netherlands all over the world, including to countries such as Los Angeles, Melbourne, Barcelona, Rome, and Beijing.

Student Ambassador Team for the Law Programme Corax Law Debate Society

Greatly assisted in helping to plan the Employment Network Event, as there is no better advertisement for a university than its own satisfied students!

The society organises workshops and trainings for the oral skills and for the preparation and the organisation of the tournament between all the LAW students called “The Hague Debate Tournament�.

International & EU law Programme

Projects Putting theory into practice, through projects such as: Model United Nations, European Parliament, Due Diligence, and an ICC Moot Court.

Moot Courts and Competitions The most ambitious and motivated students from the Law Programme representing the university in prestigious competitions, both in national and international contexts. Most recently, these include participating in the New York Model United Nations and the Telders International Law Moot Court Competition.

Trips Building on students’ ‘hopes for the future’ by travelling to important legal cities, including Brussels and Geneva, and visiting significant international institutions in The Hague itself, such as the ICJ and the ICTY.
