Saturday 1 October - BHM Celebration

Celebrations for Black History Month will officially kick off this October with an event organised by the African Caribbean Friends and Relations Association. AFRA and several artists will be at Bloomfield Road to mark Black History Month with a celebration of Music, Culture and Friendship which takes place on Saturday 1 October at 7pm in the Seasiders Bar. AFRA is all about people coming together, learning, supporting and enjoying each other’s culture. On the night there will be live music from Bob On (Bob Marley tribute band), demonstration from Zen martial arts and dancing to DJ sets from QP. This year a delicious authentic Caribbean meal will be served by Frenchies of Lytham Road. Tickets are £15 and can be ordered by telephoning 07968 401799 or 07871 949106.

Monday 10 October - Film Screening: Carmen Jones (U) Dorothy Dandridge heads the all-black cast in this update of Bizet’s opera Carmen. Her vibrant performance resulted in the first Oscar nomination for an African-American actress in a leading role. Beautiful temptress Carmen lures handsome GI Joe (Harry Belafonte) away from his sweetheart Cindy Lou. However, she soon tires of him and takes up with a heavyweight prizefighter, triggering Joe’s tragic revenge. Come and relive this fiery classic with its iconic soundtrack from Oscar Hammerstein. Hosts: Pop-up Picturehouse. Venue: Claremont Park Community Centre, Claremont Road, Blackpool, FY1 2QJ. Screening starts at 7pm. Tickets £4.50 on the door, includes unlimted tea and coffee.

Thursday 20 October - Hidden Talents: Researching the history of black entertainers in Blackpool Blackpool Council and the Race Equality Forum are pleased to host a fascinating look into the history of black performers and entertainers that have visited Blackpool over the years. The event runs from 6pm - 8pm on Thursday 20 October at Blackpool Central Library. There will be a presentation followed by a research session - looking through the local history collections.
