Aunty Social’s Pop-Up Picture House is dedicated to bringing interesting and affordable film screenings to the Fylde Coast. We plan screenings and events where people can watch and then discuss various types of films in accessible venues. We’ve screened films in a variety of locations including libraries, schools, youth clubs, galleries and theatres. We have set up and run monthly film clubs, event cinema, young people’s summer holiday screenings and a film festival too. From February 2017, we’ll return to Stanley Park Visitor Centre. We love it here because it’s accessible, easy to find and has good parking facilities and transport links. We’re moving to Blackpool Central Library for I, Daniel Blake as we’re expecting it to be popular. Similarly, the Life, Animated screening will take place at the City Learning Centre so that we can offer an autism-friendly environment. We’re bringing you a variety of independent and world films that you wouldn’t usually get to see locally on the big screen. So take a look through our programme, see what’s on offer and join us for some fantastic films!

Suffragette (12A)

2:30pm Sunday 12 March, Stanley Park Visitor Centre Directed by: Sarah Gavin, Duration: 1h 46 mins, Genre: Drama, History, Language: English Awards: Women Film Critics Circle Awards 2015: 6 awards incl. Courage in Filmmaking Award and Best Movie About Women. Hollywood Film Awards 2015: Actress of the Year - Carey Mulligan Starring Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, Brendan Gleeson and Meryl Streep, Suffragette is an inspiring and acclaimed drama that tracks the story of the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement as they fought for the right to vote, women who were forced underground to pursue a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an increasingly brutal state. These women were not primarily from the genteel educated classes, they were working women who had seen peaceful protest achieve nothing. Radicalised and turning to violence as the only route to change, they were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality - their jobs, their homes, their children and their lives. The character of Maud, played by Carey Mulligan, is one such foot soldier. The story of her fight for dignity is both heart-breaking and inspirational. There is also an optional post-screening craft workshop where you can make your own suffragette pin. Tickets: Film only ÂŁ4.50, Film & workshop ÂŁ8.

Chevalier(18)

2:30pm, Sunday 19 March, Stanley Park Visitor Centre Directed by: Athina Rachel Tsangari Genre: Comedy, Drama Language: Greek - English Subtitles Awards: 1h 45mins Awards • London Film Festival 2015: Winner - Official Competition • Hellenic Film Academy Awards 2016, Best Screenplay Winner of Best Film at the London Film Festival, Athina Rachel Tsangari’s Chevalier is a funny, perfectly pitched satire that puts masculinity under a microscope. Taking competitive spirit to the extreme, six men holidaying together on a luxury yacht go to bizarre lengths to prove that he is ‘The Best in General’. Concocting an increasingly absurd series of contests to test each other’s manhood, they score each other on everything from flatpack furniture assembly to morning erections. Rivalries and insecurities emerge, allegiances shift, tempers fray, and all good sportsmanship goes well and truly out the window and it’s only a matter of time until the knives come out... Tsangari, a long time collaborator with Yorgos Lanthimos (who made last year’s smash The Lobster), is one of the most exciting directors at work in Europe today. At once a wonderfully weird comedy and an incisive study of the games men play, Chevalier is an indie hit to watch out for. D/deaf & Hard of Hearing information: This is a subtitled film. We can provide a BSL interpreter for the discussion. Please request in advance.

Life, animated (PG)

Autism friendly screening

From Academy Award winning director Roger Ross Williams, Life, Animated is the inspirational story of Owen Suskind, a young man who was unable to speak as a child until he and his family discovered a unique way to communicate by immersing themselves in the world of classic Disney animated films. This emotional comingof-age story follows Owen as he graduates to adulthood and takes his first steps toward independence. The subject of his father Ron Suskind’s New York Times bestseller, Owen was a thriving three year old who suddenly and inexplicably went silent – and for years after remained unable to connect with other people or to convey his thoughts, feelings or desires. Over time, through repeated viewings of Disney classics like The Little Mermaid and The Lion King, Owen found useful tools to help him to understand complex social cues and to re-connect with the world around him. Life, Animated evocatively interweaves classic Disney sequences with scenes from Owen’s life in order to explore how his identification and empathy for characters like Simba, Jafar, and Ariel gave him a means to understand his feelings and allowed him to interpret reality. Beautiful, original animations offer rich insights into Owen’s relationship with Disney films as he imagines himself heroically facing adversity as a member in a tribe of sidekicks. Owen’s story is a moving testament to the many ways in which stories can serve as a means of persevering through the dark times, leading us all toward the light. Autism-friendly screening with low-level lighting, no trailers and quiet/chill-out area.
