ABOUT AUNTY SOCIAL POP-UP PICTUREHOUSE

H

ello there and welcome to Pop-up Picturehouse’s Autumn and Winter film season of Pictures in the Park.

Aunty Social’s Pop-Up Picture House is dedicated to bringing interesting and affordable film screenings to the Fylde Coast.

We plan screenings and events where people can watch and then discuss various types of films in accessible venues. We’ve screened films in a variety of locations including libraries, schools, youth clubs, galleries and theatres.

We have set up and run monthly film clubs, event cinema, young people’s summer holiday screenings and a film festival too.

From October we will be screening at Claremont Park Community Centre on Claremont Road. We’ve used this brilliant community venue for various arts activities for the last five years because it’s accessible and very friendly. The centre also has good parking facilities and transport links.

We’re bringing you a variety of independent and world films that you wouldn’t usually get to see locally on the big screen. So take a look through our programme, see what’s on offer and join us for some fantastic films!

About Aunty Social We are a volunteer-run and led community arts organisation that aims to give people in Blackpool and the Fylde Coast an opportunity to come together and build a vibrant, active community through conversation, exciting events, sharing of skills/interests and of course, yummy food.

films in October bfi black star season: Carmen Jones (U) Monday 10 October, Start 7pm Directed by Otto Preminger Genre: Musical Language: English

Dorothy Dandridge heads the all-black cast in this update of Bizet’s opera Carmen. Her vibrant performance resulted in the first Oscar nomination for an African-American actress in a leading role. She stars as the beautiful temptress who lures handsome GI Joe (Harry Belafonte) away from his sweetheart Cindy Lou. However, she soon tires of him and takes up with a heavyweight prizefighter succeeding in triggering Joe’s tragic revenge.

Updating the opera to World War II setting, Preminger took a major risk in shepherding this film into glossy CinemaScope production; but the risk paid off, becoming a hit on release. So come and relive this fiery classic with its iconic soundtrack from Oscar Hammerstein.

Diwali & Dine

After his wealthy family prohibits him from marrying his childhood sweetheart Paro, Devdas Mukherjee’s life spirals further and further out of control as he takes up a life of vice to numb the pain. In a moment of weakness, Devdas puts a wall of separation between them which leaves Paro the heartbroken wife of another man. Shattered by his loss, even the devotion of a beautiful courtesan, Chandramukhi, cannot ease his pain. A Bollywood classic, this well loved iconic film is an emotional story that will definitely pull at your heart strings.

Our Diwali and dine screening includes authentic Indian pure vegetarian meal. Starters are available at the beginning of the film, then you will be served a thali (a selection of dishes) main course during the intermission to eat during the second half.

Monday 21 November, Start 7pm Directed by: Sean Baker, Genre: Drama, LGBT, Language: English It’s Christmas Eve in Tinseltown and Sin-Dee is back on the block. Upon hearing that her pimp boyfriend hasn’t been faithful during the 28 days she was locked up, this working girl and her best friend Alexandra, embark on a mission to get to the bottom of the scandalous rumour. Their riproaring odyssey leads them through various subcultures of Los Angeles, including an Armenian family dealing with their own repercussions of infidelity.

A favourite at the Sundance Film Festival, Tangerine received great admiration for being made for just $100,000 and shot on the iPhone 5. A truly DIY project, director Sean Baker found lead actors Mya Taylor and Kitana Kiki Rodriguez by hanging out at Donut Time (which features in the film), he also used their real-life stories to shape the script. Other actors were sourced through Vine and Instagram.

Tangerine is a non-stop, vibrant and fierce trip into the LA street scene, that also explores a rarely seen on film Trans culture with great empathy.

Taxi Tehran (12A)

Monday 28 November, Start 7pm Directed by: Jafar Panahi Genre: Comedy, Drama Language: Persian Awards: Golden Bear prize - 2015 Berlin International Film Festival A taxi driver is driving through the vibrant streets of Tehran. Diverse passengers enter the taxi, each candidly expressing their views while being interviewed by the driver who is no other than the director himself. His camera placed on the dashboard, transforming his car into a mobile film studio, he captures the spirit and contradictions of Iranian society through this comedic and dramatic drive.

Banned from travelling and making films in 2010, Jafar Panahi has managed to astonish us with his beautiful trilogy composed of This is not a Film (2011), Closed Curtain (2013) and now Taxi Tehran.

In 1983, he began to keep an audio diary to help him make sense of the forthcoming upheaval in his life. Based on these original recordings and his published diaries Touching the Rock, Notes on Blindness recreates Hull’s fascinating and deeply moving experiences through a clever mixture of documentary, dramatic reconstruction and highly sensory cinematic techniques and sound design.

the tree fairy + family craft workshop (u) Thursday 29 December, 2pm Directed by: Louis Neethling Genre: Family, Drama Language: BSL, English Subtitles Awards: Best British Film, Best Director, Best Actress - Deaffest 2015 Struggling to fit in with her new step-family, a young deaf girl called Libby, makes three wishes to the Christmas Tree Fairy. She is delighted when the fairy appears and can communicate with her using sign language. But will she get what she wished for?

This screening also includes a Christmas craft workshop, where you can make your very own felt fairy and book tree. Suggested age range for workshop 5-10yrs.

Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Robinson. Their final release, When Marnie Was There, is a suitably nostalgic and overwhelmingly moving story, as well as another superb artistic achievement.

Anna, an artistically gifted but timid girl, is sent to live with relatives on the coast to recover from an illness.

While out exploring, Anna discovers an abandoned mansion, where she meets Marnie, a mysterious girl she spies through a window. Sometimes this strange house looks new, clean and full of guests; but at other times it’s empty and dilapidated. Which is real? Why are Anna’s dreams being invaded? And what is Marnie’s secret?
