Shavuot Shavuot is a festival that has many names. These include "Yom Habikurim" or the "Day of the First Fruits" and "Chag HaKatzir," the "Harvest Festival". As you may or may not be aware, Shavuot marks the end of the counting of the Omer, the period of counting 7 weeks where we count up to receiving the Torah (Bible). Shavuot is the festival where we celebrate the receiving of the ten commandments from God through Moses at Mount Sinai. At Mount Sinai all the Jewish people came together to accept the Torah and its commandments.

Shavuot Customs - Dairy Products On Shavuot it is a custom to eat dairy products. This is to remind us of the period where the Jewish people did not have a way to prepare Kosher meat. Many people choose to bake cheesecake for Shavuot. Please find a delicious cheesecake recipe from Monday Morning Cooking Club. It is a perfect treat to eat, while you stay up all night to learn. Ingredients: Base: ❏ ⅓ cup plain flour ❏ ⅗ teaspoon baking powder ❏ Pinch of salt ❏ 2 eggs, separated ❏ ⅓ cup caster sugar ❏ 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ❏ Finely grated zest of 1 lemon ❏ 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted ❏ ¼ teaspoon of cream of tartar Cheese Filling: ❏ 1 KG of cream cheese at room temperature, chopped ❏ 1 cup caster sugar ❏ ¼ cup cornflour ❏ 2 eggs ❏ ¾ cup pure cream ❏ 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Method: Preheat the oven to 180℃. Line a springform cake tin, then tightly wrap the outside in foil so that water can’t get in. You will also need a deep baking dish that can fit the cake tin inside so that the cake can cook in a water bath. To make the base, sift the flour, baking powder and salt into a bowl. Using an electric mixer, beat the egg yolks with half the caster sugar until pale and creamy. Add the vanilla and lemon zest, then fold in the flour mixture until just combined, followed by the melted butter. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg whites and cream of tartar until soft peaks form, then slowly add the remaining sugar, whisking in 1 spoonful at a time until stiff peaks form. Fold in the egg whites into the egg yolk mixture. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin, tap a few times on the benchtop to remove any larger air bubbles, then bake in the centre of the oven for 10 minutes or until light golden. Meanwhile. Make the cheese filling. Using an electric mixer, beat the cheese, sugar and cornflour until well combined. Add the eggs, one at a time, then the cream and vanilla, and beat until smooth. Remove the cake tin from the oven, spoon in the cheese filling and place the tin into the baking dish. Pour enough tap water into the baking dish to come 3 cm up the side of the cake tin and place the cake and its water bath in the oven. (Double-check that the water is below the foil and can’t seep into the cake.) Bake for 1 hour or until the top of the cake is light golden. Remove from the oven and carefully lift the cake tin out of the water bath. Allow to cool at room temperature for 2 hours, then regrifeate for at least 4 hours before evening. Enjoy!

Shavuot Customs - Tikkun Leil Another custom of Shavuot is called Tikkun Leil. Tikkun Leil refers to the idea that Jewish people from all around the world stay up all night learning Torah . Since we cannot do this in person this year, we thought that it would be a cool opportunity to share a few Jewihs ideas and sources. Giving us all the opportunity to learn something new and share these ideas with our friends and family, so that you can have your own Tikkun Leil from home. On that note, AUJS Victoria wishes you all a Chag Smaeach (Happy Shavuot). We hope that the sources below provide you with some insight and a few new thoughts.

Questions to Engage with the Texts ●
How does Australian and Jewish Law differ?
●
Show we be judged solely on our actions?
●
Should Law care about how we think and feel , or should it only focus on the way we act?
●
Do you believe that we do have control over our actions?
●
Does it make you a bad person to think negative things, if you do not act on them?
●
Which of the ten commandments do you most relate to?
●
Do you believe that feelings lead to actions? If yes, do you think that they should be guarded?
●
Do you notice that there are 2 broader categories within the 10 commandments? The first being bein adam L’makom (between man and God) and the second being bein adam L‘chaveiro (between man and man). Do you think the placement of Honouring your mother and father fits into these categories?
