Augustana Christmas Vespers 2025

SCHOOL OF MUSIC

Dear Augustana family and friends,

Welcome to Augustana University’s Christmas Vespers, presented by the Augustana School of Music. For generations, this service has invited our community to gather in song and story. We are especially grateful to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church for their partnership and hospitality, as well as to Thrivent for helping sustain this beloved tradition.

This year’s theme, “O Come Let Us Adore Him,” is drawn from the treasured carol “O Come, All Ye Faithful.” At the heart of this lyric is an invitation: to come, to see and to worship the infant Christ.

The Advent season overflows with invitations — gatherings with family and friends, concerts, programs and parties. It is not always possible to accept them all, yet the most important invitation of Christmas remains the simplest: to come and adore the Christ child — God’s incredible gift of love to each of us.

Tonight, through music, word and prayer, we respond to that invitation. We gather to remember the miracle of Jesus’ birth — a story that calls us again and again with the promise of peace, hope and eternal life.

To the parents, families and friends with us this evening, thank you for sharing your remarkable students with Augustana University. Their gifts and dedication enrich this community and inspire us all.

It is my prayer that this service renews your spirit and fills your heart with the wonder and joy of that holy night. May you and your loved ones be blessed with hope and peace throughout this Advent and Christmas season, and in the year ahead.

Sincerely,

Augustana University extends a most sincere thank you to:

Gloria Dei Lutheran Church & Thrivent

Thank you for your generous support of our students and our mission:

“Inspired by Lutheran scholarly tradition and the liberal arts, Augustana provides an education of enduring worth that challenges the intellect, fosters integrity and integrates faith with learning and service in a diverse world.”

NARRATION

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews?

For we have seen his star in the east, and come to worship him. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary, his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts, gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

— Matthew 2:1-2, 10-11

On yesternight I saw a sight text by Rt. Rev. George W Stubbs On yesternight I saw a sight, a star as bright as day, (1845-1912) and heard among the heav’ns a song, the Christ is born today. Gareth Treseder (living)

O joy and bliss! ‘Tis true, I wis, this word the angels say: He comes, my dear, to bring us cheer, for ever and for aye.

Good will and peace, they ne’er shall cease in men of love to live; for this Christ-king –O wondrous thing! To earth God’s Hope doth give.

And it shall be that good kings three shall bring on His Twelfth Night a crown of gold and gifts foretold with jewels all endight.

And spice and myrrh, alas! for her (Sweet Mary, bless thy boy!); For here is laid the great world’s aid, her sorrow and its joy.

What child or man who will or can not merry be today? For news like this of joy and bliss we know is sad no way.

O Holy Child, thou undefiled, send us God’s grace, we pray! O come to us, abide with us, be born in us today!

NARRATION

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night...and, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. — Luke 2:8-11, 15-16

Shepherds, in the field abiding, watching o’er your flocks by night, God with us is now residing; yonder shines the infant light:

Refrain

Though an infant now we view Him, he shall fill His Father’s throne, gather all the nations to him; ev’ry knee shall then bow down:

Refrain

NARRATION

I do not think I’m likely to forget the brilliance of the star that blazed that night, and in my ear the song’s resounding yet of that celestial choir whose voices bright with hope and promise filled the shining air; rang from the nestling hills, rang from the earth where slept our flocks that night, all unaware these voices heralded a Saviour’s birth.

We went into the stable where He lay and my poor gift of love placed at His feet. He smiled on me. The place grew bright as day, and there was peace, ineffable and sweet.

— John Davenport Womack

And the blessing of God the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit be with you and remain with you always, with you always. Amen.

NARRATION

Then why should we on earth be sad, since our Redeemer made us glad, When from our sin He set us free, all to gain our liberty?

When sin departs before His grace, then life and health come in its place; Angels and we with joy may sing, all for to see the newborn King

All out of darkness we have light, which made the angels sing this night; Glory to God and peace to all, now and forevermore. Amen.

Joy to the World

text by Isaac Watts (1674-1748)

Joy to the world, the Lord is come! arr. Jeremy Hegg Let earth receive her king; let ev’ry heart prepare Him room and heav’n and nature sing, and heav’n and nature sing, and heav’n and heav’n and nature sing.

Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns!

Let all their songs employ, while fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains repeat the sounding joy, repeat the sounding joy, repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

He rules the world with truth and grace and makes the nations prove the glories of His righteousness and wonders of His love, and wonders of His love, and wonders, wonders of His love.

Natalie Campbell serves on the faculty at Augustana University as an instructor of voice and the director of Angelus. She holds a master’s degree in vocal performance from the University of South Dakota (USD), where she studied with Dr. Brandon Hendrickson. While at USD, she was the winner of the university’s annual concerto competition and performed the roles of Dido in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas and Monica in Menotti’s The Medium. She also received a B.M. in piano and vocal music education from Houghton College in New York and has pursued graduate studies in piano and chamber music at Rice University in Houston, Texas.

Recent solo performances include Mendelssohn’s Psalm 42, Mozart’s ‘Coronation Mass,” Orff’s “Carmina Burana,” Fauré’s “Requiem,” Handel’s “Messiah,” Haydn’s “Missa brevis” and a Midwest premiere of Shawn Kirchner’s “Songs of Ascent.” In 2018, she was selected as a participant in the prestigious American Bach Soloists Academy in San Francisco, California. She has also served as an artist-in-residence for the inaugural International Choral Conducting Masterclass and Young Artist Program at Baylor University.

Campbell has performed as a soloist and ensemble singer with many professional vocal ensembles, including The Rose Ensemble, Mercury Baroque, Cantare Houston, Transept and the Grammy-nominated South Dakota Chorale.

Dr. Russell Svenningsen is director of vocal studies and associate professor of music at Augustana. He is the sixth conductor of the Augustana Choir, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2021. He holds a DMA in music education from Boston University, an M.M. in choral conducting from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music and a B.M. in music education from Concordia College. He has studied conducting with Dale Warland, René Clausen, Jon Washburn, Elmer Thomas, Earl Rivers and John Leman and voice with Daniel Weeks, Mark Schowalter and Margaret Hanegraaf.

Svenningsen is an active conductor, performer and clinician. He has worked with professional, high school and community choirs across the U.S. and abroad. He is the first and only South Dakota-based conductor to have directed the South Dakota All-State Chorus — a choir of nearly 1,000 singers from all over the state in 2021. He is also a member of the GRAMMY-nominated South Dakota Chorale. As a solo artist, recent projects include a recording of Franz Schubert’s epochal song cycle Winterreise with Debra Reid and livestreamed recital of Schumann’s Dichterliebe with Dr. Shu Li during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Svenningsen is a proud member of the American Choral Directors Association, National Association for Music Education, National Collegiate Choral Organization and National Association of Teachers of Singing.

Svenningsen is the adoring husband of Sarah and proud father of two children, Anders and Annika. He is an avid woodworker and a deeply terrible golfer.

Matthew Tylutki is the chapel organist and instructor of music at Augustana. He has served as principal organist at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and serves as the director of children and youth music at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. At First Lutheran, he oversees the First Lutheran Church Choir School — a comprehensive K-12 music education program steeped in the Lutheran tradition. Tylutki’s education includes a bachelor’s degree in music education from St. Olaf College and Master of Music (MM) degree in organ performance from the University of South Dakota. He has been fortunate to study under the guidance of Dr. Catherine Rodland, Joanne Rodland and Dr. Jared Ostermann. Tylutki contributes to church music and organist organizations, serving as assistant manager for the Royal School of Church Music Midwest Summer Choral Residency and the orgelkids coordinator and sub-dean of the South Dakota Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

Dr. David Chin is an international conductor, educator, speaker and cultural entrepreneur, currently long-term visiting professor of music at Augustana, where he teaches conducting and music history, and directs both vocal and instrumental ensembles, including the Augustana Bach Collegium and Bach Cantata Series. A passionate advocate for the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, he has founded multiple organizations and created opportunities for young musicians worldwide — most notably establishing Bachfest Malaysia and the award-winning Malaysia Bach Festival Singers and Orchestra in 2015.

Under Chin’s leadership, Bachfest Malaysia has grown into Asia’s first Bach festival and a cultural beacon — building Malaysia’s classical music ecosystem and sustaining major concert productions, international tours and scholarly publications without institutional funding. In 2022, Chin was appointed a senior fellow of the Bach-Archiv Leipzig, only the fourth person to receive this honor since 1950 — solidifying his reputation as a leading Bach authority in Asia and beyond. Most recently, he led the Malaysia Bach Festival Singers & Orchestra on a celebrated tour across Germany, earning critical acclaim and front-page coverage in Leipzig’s leading newspaper.

As a conductor, Chin’s repertoire spans Renaissance polyphony, Bach’s complete major choral-orchestral works, world premieres and even Broadway. He has conducted more than 40 of Bach’s cantatas, with highlights including St. Matthew Passion featuring tenor Daniel Johannsen, Beethoven’s Missa solemnis in East Malaysia, Bach Vespers in New York City, New York, Emmanuel Music in Boston, Massachusetts, and St. John Passion with the Augustana Bach Collegium. His engagements have taken him across the United States, Asia and Europe, where he collaborates with musicians of all levels and cultural backgrounds.

Beyond the podium, Chin’s scholarly contributions include several books and the documentary Encountering Bach — filmed in Germany and now, the most-viewed Bach documentary online. He holds master’s and doctoral degrees in conducting from the Eastman School of Music, supported by full scholarships and is the recipient of the Harvey Fellowship and Burton Fellowship for German Studies.

His motto is Philippians 4:12-13.
