B E S T TA K E - H O M E B E E R SELECTION
It’s nice to be able to sample different beers from all over the world and from tiny craft breweries across the fruited plain. If you’d like to do that and don’t know where to go, you’re reading the right paragraph. Readers recommend Beverage Outlet for the widest selection. Additional options: Toast Wine and Beverage (2nd) and The White Horse Wine & Spirits (3rd).

Look, we know about fat and cholesterol and all that. But a person can’t live on tofu and kale chips indefinitely. At some point just to survive you’re going to have to have some mashed potatoes and gravy, meatloaf and pork and beans. But where? Our readers say go to Goolsby’s. The very name itself sounds down-home, doesn’t it? Somehow you know this isn’t a candlelit French restaurant. Election central also has tallied second- and third-place votes for Fat Man’s Mill Café and Cracker Barrel Old Country Store.

B E S T B R E A K FA S T The beauty of The Brunch House of Augusta is that you don’t have to wait for brunch to go there. They win best breakfast, and that’s just their pre-brunch warm-up act. What does that say about their brunch? Probably very good things, but you’ll have to wait for that category to find out. Sunrise Grill and First Watch, as you can plainly see from their names, also specialize in marvelous mornings.
BEST APPETIZERS In the category of non-morning beginnings, sharp-eyed readers noticed a link between ampersands and quality appetizers, ranking them in this order: Craft & Vine at No. 1, followed by Finch & Fifth (not to be confused with Fifth & Finch), and then F&H, better known as Frog & the Hen. Scientists are investigating the link.
BEST BARBECUE Is it the meat or the heat? Is it the sauce or the boss? Voters say Sconyers Bar-B-Que has it all: the beef and the pork, the mesquite fires, the tangy sauces and Larry Sconyers as the ultimate grillmaster. That recipe has worked for 60 years and counting. Voters give second place to SmokeShow Southern Style BBQ and third to Jim ’N Nick’s Bar-B-Q. But here is the question no one can answer: What is the correct spelling of barbecue?
BEST RIBS Many religions have their various sects and splinter groups, and barbecue is no exception. Some adherents venerate the rib in particular, and readers say they tend to congregate at SmokeShow Southern Style BBQ (but not necessarily on Sunday mornings). Others regularly attend Sconyers Bar-B-Que and Jim ’N Nick’s Bar-B-Q.
BEST WINGS It doesn’t matter if you’re talking the West Wing or the East Wing that is no more, left wing or right wing. What matters is Wingstop. Period. The ballots say they serve the best wings in the entire area. Don’t take our word for it; fly in and give them a
try! Doc’s Porchside wins second and TBonz Steakhouse scores third.
BEST SEAFOOD There is nothing quite like superb seafood, and readers say Beck’s is the best place on dry land to savor seafood at its finest. Similarly, a silvery medal is awarded to Abel Brown Southern Kitchen & Oyster Bar. In a category all its own — definitely good and delicious and enjoyable, but also decidedly unique — the bronze medal goes to Rhinehart’s Oyster Bar.
BEST SUSHI Serving the best sushi requires more than just being an outstanding chef. You can’t just throw it on a plate; you also have to be an artist. Readers say the best combination of culinary skills and artistry is served at Takosushi, and if we’re guessing, not the tako side of the equation. Second place: See if you can find a place called 990 Broad Sushi Kitchen. Readers say it is that close to being best. In third: Koi Japanese Hibachi & Sushi.
BEST STEAK Where to go for steak in its prime? We asked our readers and they said, “You ask us every year and we keep telling you! TBonz Steakhouse! Every year!” Okay, okay. Touchy! Second-place is awarded to Brinkley’s Chop House, which is definitely a special occasion restaurant that doesn’t require a special occasion. Some people say it’s expensive. Our response: their Million Dollar Bacon is only $18. Use the $999,982 you just saved to splurge a little. A worthy third goes to Frog Hollow Tavern.
B E S T C AT F I S H If Old McDonald’s Fish Camp, the reader favorite, was not actually the best, that would be an example of catfishing. But rest easy — it isn’t. They’re really that good. Readers also like the cats served by Rhinehart’s Oyster Bar and Cracker Barrel Old Country Store.
BEST FRIED CHICKEN Has it been a long day? A long week? Are you absolutely fried? Then fight fire with fire: Have some fried chicken. They call it comfort food for a reason, especially when it comes from WifeSaver, the preferred choice of voters. Maryland Fried Chicken wins second place, and the non-frog division of Frog & the Hen takes third.
BEST SOUP The voting for the soup offerings at California Dreaming was so hot and heavy it was actually chunky style. Votes for Panera Bread were also pretty souped-up, and believe us when we tell you, even in third place, Olive Garden got more than a soupçon of votes. Way more.
BEST PIZZA Our research department tells us that 13% of the U.S. population eats pizza on any given day. Based on the ballots we saw, a sizable slice of those people are patrons of Mellow Mushroom. Another segment prefers The Pizza Joint, followed by the moveable feast known as Southern Fired Foods. (They also now have a brick and mortar restaurant located in Grovetown.)
BEST HOT DOG Do you prefer the term weiner? Frankfurter? Or simply frank? Oh … okay … Moving on, the established dogma on both sides of the river seems to be that SnoCap Drive-In is the place to go. Yes, there are dog fans in South Carolina. Farmhaus Burger, in second place, has transformed the Chicago Dog into the Augusta Dog. Costco takes third, and they don’t even make you buy 72 at a time.
BEST BURRITO We’re all a little Hispanic at heart, right? That’s why we’ve been streaming to Nacho Mama’s for decades. Voters say their burritos are lo mejor, which is Spanish for “pretty durned tasty.” Diablo’s Southwest Grill is devilishly good in second, and Taqueria El Rey? Burritos fit for a king. OCTOBER 2026

BEST SUSHI
Takosushi BEST SANDWICHES If the question is which sandwich, the clear answer is Hildebrandt’s. Search the planet and you won’t find another place like it. They recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. Well, not that recently. When the stock market crashed in 1929, that year was their 50th. So semi-recently. Knuckle Sandwiches and Mosh Pit Eats and also highly rated by voters.
BEST HAMBURGER Yes, hamburgers are sandwiches. We get that. But there’s no way they’re in the same category as peanut butter & jelly. They deserve their own category. And that category was won by Farmhaus Burger. They serve the tastiest burgers, according to readers. Also, because they have a kitchen, Whiskey Bar Kitchen is able to offer silver medal burgers. The bronze medal goes to the venerable Village Deli Sub & Pub.
BEST FRENCH FRIES You say you prefer your potatoes fried in the French style? How suave and urbane of you! You undoubtedly already know that your
54

discriminating tastes (and taste buds) are best satisfied to your exacting standards at Farmhaus Burger. We cannot disagree. Some Francophiles alternately patronize Five Guys, where purists pronounce guy in the French manner: “ghee.” McDonald’s takes home third place.
BEST SALAD Remember last summer when lettuce was such an explosive topic? Hopefully by the time we’re reading this, salads will have returned to being the healthful foundations that we can then bury in shredded cheese, garlic croutons, bacon bits, chicken bites and dressing. Or we could just take the recommendations of the ballots and go to 1) California Dreaming, 2) SoSal, or 3) Edgar’s Grille, and let them build us a great salad.
BEST DESSERT Quick, name an area eatery famous for its superb desserts. We posed that challenge to 2,762 registered voters recently and the overwhelming winner was The Boll Weevil Cafe & Sweetery. They had us at sweetery, even though that is not actually a
word. Manuel’s Bread Café wins the silver cake fork, and Whipped Creamery takes home the bronze waffle cone.
BEST BAKERY Considering the many options — breads, bagels, muffins, brownies, dinner rolls, sweet rolls, cookies, cakes, pies — the list could go on almost indefinitely — this is a category with national security implications. Readers rose to the occasion, nominating Edgar’s Bakehouse for top honors. Grovetown’s sterling little Lazarette St. Bakeshop is vice bakery, and Lil’ Dutch Bakery is tapped for the deputy of the bakery post.
BEST DONUTS Personally, we prefer “lite” varieties, the ones spelled “donuts,” not “doughnuts.” That way we can eat two or three instead of just one. Readers recommend EN Donuts in North Augusta for your daily fix. If you’re wondering, EN comes from the initials of the owners’ first names (Elena and Nolan). Krispy Kreme and Belair Donuts score second and third, respectively.
BEST ICE CREAM Our grandparents probably never even heard the word froyo. Is this a great time to be alive or what? Which reminds us: Summerville Scoops in Daniel Village wins this category, and they offer all the delicious flavors of ice cream and frozen yogurt you would expect from a winner. Kettle Creek Creamery and Whipped Creamery creamed the competition for second and third.
BEST COFFEE Speaking of our grandparents, they suffered through 50¢ cups of coffee their entire lives. Today we have the privilege of drinking coffee at 10 times that price (and more), and places like Relic Coffee Company exist to help make sure the extra expense is worth it. Heavily-caffeinated readers also voted for Rooted Coffeehouse and its multiple one-of-a-kind locations, with Trellis Coffee Bar completing the top three.
BEST ICED TEA Travel afar, ask for iced tea, and some places will bring you tea bags, a mug, a pot of hot water and a glass of ice. What is wrong with these people? Let’s just be thankful that for most of us it’s just a short hop to WifeSaver, the reader favorite. Realtors tell us it’s a major selling point for people moving to the area. McDonald’s and McAlister’s Deli also get lots of votes.
BEST WINE MERCHANT You say you have an elegant dinner party coming up and need to know what pairs best with pimento cheese sandwiches? Take your questions to The White Horse Wine & Spirits. The ballots say they’re the experts. Toast Wine and Beverage is another finalist, as is Cork & Flame, a wine shop disguised as a fine restaurant. Or is it the other way around?
BEST WINE MENU It could be inferred that a restaurant with an excellent wine list more than likely also serves excellent food. They go hand in hand. Readers have crowned the aforementioned Cork & Flame as the best in this category. Frog Hollow Tavern also pairs well with second place, and Brinkley’s Chop House finishes with third-place notes. BEST LUNCH On a different day (not a brunch day), get your hungry self over to Laziza Mediterranean Grill (downtown, Evans or Aiken). The Augusta magazine-reading citizens of the region recommend it as the best in midday meals. They also speak highly of Edgar’s Grille and Bodega Ultima.
BEST BUSINESS LUNCH This category doesn’t necessarily mean 3-piece suits and pantyhose. It just means a pleasant setting, excellent but unobtrusive service, and a place where you don’t have to shout to be heard. The votes say Edgar’s Grille checks all the boxes, so be sure to bring a pen. You’ll have contracts to sign. A couple of other spots to keep the local economy humming along are French Market Grille West and a place we’ve already heard from on these pages once or twice: Frog & the Hen.
B E S T A S I A N R E S TA U R A N T We begin our world culinary tour in the Far East, where the ballots take us to Mirin Fusion Kitchen. Mirin because the word is associated with beauty, fusion because it’s Japanese, Korean and more. Koi Japanese Hibachi & Sushi wins second

place, and Toki Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar takes third.
BEST MEDITERRANEAN R E S TA U R A N T Since we did a mini-language lesson above, it’s only fair to do it here, too. “Laziza,” as in Laziza Mediterranean Grill, the reader fave, has origins related to “delicious” and “delightful.” We like the sound of that. Pita Mediterranean Street Food, next to Sprouts, scores second place, and Ephesus Greek and Turkish Restaurant, purveyors of Greek and Turkish food, wins third.
BEST MEXICAN RESTAURANT Taqueria El Rey, the #1 choice by readers (pronounced tah-keh-REE-ah el ray) denotes a casual restaurant serving none other than el rey — the king. That would be you. And me. Everybody. Gender is irrelevant when it comes to excellent Mexican food. Yes, women can be king, too. Poblano’s Mexican Bar & Grill cruises to 2nd place, while Salsa’s Bar & Grill gets 3rd.
Indian restaurant, Taj of India. It fits. Curry Hut and Namaste Indian Street Food complete the Top Three.
BEST ITALIAN RESTAUR ANT Oliviana Ristorante & Bar Italiano gets the top prize. And why wouldn’t it? The name Oliviana derives from the olive, both olive oil and the trees the precious oil comes from. We could not have fine Italian dining without it. Trattoria Polipo is first runner-up, followed by Olive Garden.
BEST DOWNTOWN R E S TA U R A N T Pity the embattled downtown eatery, beleaguered and bedeviled by Broad Street’s never-ending construction project. It will presumably look great when it’s all done, but in the meantime, if you’re looking for a restaurant to support, by all means pick one on Broad Street. Looking for suggestions? Readers recommend Frog Hollow Tavern first, followed by Whiskey Bar Kitchen and Solé Augusta.

Roux’s Catering and Berry’s Catering + Events also get high marks from readers.
BEST FOOD TRUCK Mirin Fusion Kitchen on Facebook
The challenge in this category is always, “Where are they today?” If they’re in this paragraph, they’re worth the search. First, check websites and social media for SmokeShow Southern Style BBQ. Readers next recommend Southern Fired Foods (note, that’s not “fried” misspelled), followed by Whipped Creamery (Fun fact: during the World Cup they thought about changing their name to Whirled Creamery). Sheehan’s Irish Pub. We should point out that you don’t have to live in the same neighborhood as Sheehan’s to go there. Or be Irish. You can be Bulgarian or Bora Borian, for example, and that’s okay. The same goes for Ironwood Tavern and Rae’s Coastal Cafe. Everybody may not know your name now, but they will soon.
BEST HIDDEN GEM R E S TA U R A N T Some places are hidden in plain sight, others not so much. At Rae’s Coastal Cafe, for instance, the top reader choice, their business has increased 86% since navigation apps became commonplace. But in the Plain Sight Department, there is no need to search for Cadwalladers or Edgar’s Grille. Just

B E S T N E W R E S TA U R A N T Atop the final standings is Suea. Have you heard of it? Suea is located at 123 James Brown Boulevard downtown, and in a word … well, in three words … it’s all about “modern Thai tapas.” And if we didn’t mention this before, readers say it is the best new restaurant in our city. Across the river, Brink’s Tavern scores the silver medal and the ballots say Evans’ newish CAVA gets third place.
B E S T C AT E R E R When you can’t go to the food, hire someone
B E S T TA K E O U T You can’t miss the big game, but you’re starving. What to do? Readers say call Village Deli for the best takeout. Quick, tasty, et cetera. What more could you ask for? Other worthy takeout options: Top Dawg Tavern and Ironwood Tavern.
B E S T R E S TA U R A N T OVER ALL Perhaps the most coveted of all categories is won by Abel Brown Southern Kitchen & Oyster Bar, a place sometimes known as Abel Brown. Congratulations! The other two finalists in this rarefied bracket are Frog Hollow Tavern and Beck’s. Well done! Keep up the good work!

Like, “I’m not a real clown, I just look like one because of this costume,” and also, “I’m not a real diamond, I just look like one because of these sparkles.” Fast forward to 2026, and The Swank Company is riding this wave to victory. But in second place, Reniara and its golf-themed jewelry is driving (and putting) its way to the top from its online store. Third place belongs to Soho.
BEST LOCAL ONLINE SHOPPING The Swank Company, winner of this category, probably racks up more online sales in a single week all by itself than our grandparents’ favorite store did in a year. The same might also apply to Posh Tots Children’s Boutique, although we will have to check the figures to be sure. Escape Outdoors gets third, filling orders that no doubt get shipped to wilderness drops across the continent.

Every time we go to the top reader choice, we always have a sparkling conversation with the attendant. That’s probably why they call it Sparkle Express, because of the scintillating conversations everybody has there. Readers gave Ray Ray’s Carwash second place and LuLu’s Car Wash earns third place, with 4.7 Google stars to back it up.
Whatever you call your money — bacon, dough, bread, cheddar, cabbage — Golden Harvest Food Bank welcomes your deposits. Like any other bank, they pay dividends on those deposits, but unlike other banks, Golden Harvest pays dividends to everybody. Ronald McDonald House Augusta and Child Enrichment also rank high — as well they should.
BEST BARBERSHOP Big City Cuts makes a big splash as the #1 barbershop in the big city (of Grovetown). Seven days a week they interact with hundreds of thousands of individual hairs. Wow. Second place goes to the several V’s Barbershops around town (although so far there are only III locations, not V), and Durden’s Barber Shop, the OG classic, wins the bronze medal.
BEST SPECIAL EVENT FAC I L I T Y When the event itself is already special, a venue that is also special makes the whole thing even specialer, which is what the votes say about the Columbia County Amphitheater, what old-timers still sometimes call Lady Antebellum. Although Lady A wins, every finalist in this category is
a special special event facility. Exhibits 2 and 3: Edgar’s Above Broad and Sacred Heart Cultural Center are the very definition of unique, and that makes them special.
BEST H ISTORIC L AN DMARK Readers chose well, giving the crown to Sacred Heart Cultural Center, the spectacular church designed by the same architect behind Manhattan’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral. We counted the other day, and Sacred Heart contains more than 600,000 bricks. True! (Not true: that we counted the other “day.” It actually took us over a week.) The James Brown Statue — evidently off somewhere on tour — wins second place. Augusta Canal, which was dug completely by hand using the most advanced earth-moving technology of the day — shovels, picks and wheelbarrows — takes third.

Mr. Brown is coming back, so he does not qualify. What does qualify is Fat Man’s Forest. There was no place like it, that’s for sure. Fort Discovery, ahead of its time, comes (or went) next, and Funsville takes the final spot on the medals stand. Let us have a moment of silence for all three.
BEST FLORIST At your favorite florist, Flowers on Broad, they’re not pushing up daisies. The very opposite; they’re thriving. What they are doing is pushing daisies. See the difference? There is no up. They’re also pushing — correction, providing — roses, carnations, corsages, boutonnières and all kinds of beautiful floral bouquets. Readers also like Martina’s Flowers and Gifts, and Charleston Street.

BEST GOLF COURSE The Patch opened to many accolades last spring. Sitting atop the leaderboard, in all its newfound emerald splendor, is this reimagined public golf course. Forest Hills Golf Course comes next, and Bartram Trail Golf Club (the organization and its course, not the ball striking tool) wins third.
BEST TENNIS COURTS Conveniently located within a couple of Daly-esque drives from The Patch, Newman Tennis Center gets the most love in this category, and that means something. The Columbia County Racquet Center (formerly the Petersburg Racquet Club), located in a quiet setting off The Pass, wins second, and readers judge the courts at Riverview Park in North Augusta as next best.

It repeats as the fave in what is often called a “44-peat.” And some people get excited about a 3-peat! Get over yourselves. Robin Dixon has been belting out country classics in these parts for years, and readers give her the silver medal. Augusta’s very own queen of bluegrass, Eryn Eubanks, scores the bronze.
BEST LOCAL R&B BAND Perennial favorites The Lady & the Gents get another gold record this year. In fact, all three medalists are well-known in Best of Augusta balloting and area performance venues. They have paid their dues! Second place goes to The Tony Howard Band, followed by Tre’Sounds.
BEST LOCAL JAZZ BAND Readers love the jazz vibes of the L4 Jazz
Collective — especially since the quartet is built around classic jazz instruments: piano, drums, string bass — and a vibraphone. Quality music. The same is true of The BrownsTown Gritty, a most worthy recipient of second place. Bill Karp Jazz, purveyor of classic American jazz, scores third place. As readers know, Karp is kool.
BEST LOCAL COUNTRY BAND The aforementioned Robin Dixon isn’t a solo act. She fronts Robin Dixon & Midnight Moon, which readers say is the #1 country band within the sound of this magazine. BEST LOCAL CONTEMPORARY CHRISTIAN BAND/GROUP Tops among the Joyful Noise People — which would be a great name for a Christian band if nobody’s already snagged it — is Trey McLaughlin & The Sounds of Zamar. Obviously Zamar was a joyful dude. Dave Pettigrew takes second, and Kristal Mindingall & Vibe Theory wins third.
BEST PERFORMING ARTS GROUP The Augusta Players may seem to be the best in this category, but readers say they’re just acting. They don’t say that about The Davidson Fine Arts High School Chorale. They say they’re just singing. And in perfect
harmony to boot! That goes for the Augusta Choral Society, too.
BEST BAR What transforms a mere bar to a Best Bar? Is it the skills of the bartender? The atmosphere? The juke box? Maybe it’s the stools. Whatever it is, the The Indian Queen takes the victory. Their neighbors at Arsenal Tap Room + Kitchen win second. In third (first-place among downtown bars), it’s Metro Pub & Coffeehouse.
B E S T L AT E - N I G H T S P O T Metro Pub & Coffeehouse, on what people used to call the shady side of Broad Street, takes a medal here as the best place to end one day and possibly start the next. Loft of Augusta, on what people used to call the sunny side of Broad Street, wins second place. Just make sure to get there well before 2 a.m. The lack of shade should be no problem at that hour. The Indian Queen scores third.
BEST LIVE MUSIC BAR All the great performers we’ve been talking about above … where can you see them play live? It’s just not the same on YouTube, you know? These are the places to check for their live music calendar: Start with Doc’s Porchside, say the ballots. Next, try the Fox’s Lair, which offers the added advantage of overnight accommodations within walking distance if happy hour is a little too happy. Finally, readers recommend Stillwater Taproom. These are all venues worthy of our support.
BEST SPORTS BAR When we say sports bar, relax. You don’t need to be in shape. You don’t need to wear gym shorts. In fact, we highly recommend that you don’t. Readers anoint Twin Peaks as tops in the category. From that you can infer several things: for starters, cold beer, good food and many screens. Doc’s Porchside and Buffalo Wild Wings win second and third with similar amenities. OCTOBER 2026

BEST LOCAL MALE ANCHOR
Brad Means
By definition, this is about the local people who are the face of our area stations. That’s why it isn’t “Best TV Network.” That would be a completely different category. As it turns out, the most local people who most local people like most are the ones on the air at WRDW News 12. Next comes WJBF NewsChannel 6, and then WFXG FOX54. We would mention their network affiliations, but that’s irrelevant, right?
B ES T LO CA L FE M A L E ANCHOR The lead story in the Best Female Anchor category — breaking news, as they say — is none other than Jennie Montgomery of WJBF. Coming up: Zayna Haliburton of WRDW, and after a short break, Kimberely Scott at WFXG. Congratulations to them all.
B ES T LO CA L M A L E ANCHOR Ladies first, right? So when they say Brad & Jennie, they probably really meant to say Jennie & Brad. But in this case, we’re going to allow Brad & Jennie because Brad Means (WJBF) was the winner in this category. Readers, thanks for this synchronicity. Who knows what troubles might have been created by co-anchors

who are unevenly ranked! Trent Butler (WFXG) and Will Rioux (WRDW) are the other reader favorites.
B ES T M O R N I N G T V ANCHOR For a night owl, being a morning TV anchor would be the worst job on the planet. Fortunately (according to the ballots), Mary Morrison of WJBF is a different kind of feathered friend. She is an early bird. Viewers seem to appreciate that greatly. WRDW has second and third place locked down with Ashley Jones and Nick Proto.
B ES T T V W E AT H E R ANCHOR Some people say Jay Jeff ries of WFXG is like a summer thunderstorm in Augusta: you know it’s coming, but you don’t know exactly when or where.
People, are you not paying attention? Jay always wins! Will summer be hot? Will winter be cold? Will Jay win? In other news, the best weather anchor not named Jay is Tim Strong of WRDW, and the best weather anchor not named Jay or Tim is Jenna Petracci of WJBF.
B ES T LO CA L T V REPORTER It is no exaggeration to say that the top two slots in voting for this category are the definition of unique, each in their own way. At the top once again is WJBF’s George Eskola, Mister One-of-a-Kind himself. Second place goes to WFXG’s Daniel Matesevac. Here he is, enjoying his first on-air job out of college, and he already has a silver medal under his belt. Nice work, Daniel. Third place goes to anchor and investigative journalist Meredith Anderson of WRDW.

Look who’s talking! It’s Austin Rhodes of WGAC, who talks the talk for a living. Not everyone can say that. In fact, hardly anyone can, but Austin gives the city a good talking-to every day. Station-mates John Patrick and Mary Liz Nolan win secondand third-most talkative.
Voters gave it up for DropTheDis, the doctor-recommended antidote for all the negativity of the Disgusta faction. Second place goes to Local Matters, a great place for voters and ordinary citizens to educate themselves on the local issues of the day, and third place is won by life coach Tara Simkins’ 5-star podcast about living your best life.

B ES T LO CA L W R I T E R
No offense, TV people, but nobody’s got time to watch TV in the morning. We’ve got to get our lipstick on straight, hop in the car and get in line at Chick-fil-A. While we’re doing all that, we can squeeze in some quality radio time, and readers say they’re tuned in mostly to the Kicks 99 Wake Up Krew. Second-place goes to Augusta’s Morning News, hosted by the aforementioned John Patrick and Mary Liz Nolan.
Your top local wordsmith is Greg Rickabaugh, the man behind The Jail Report, which has now gone all digital. Unfortunately for Greg, crime is so rare around here there’s hardly anything to write about, but he makes do with what he can. Good work, Greg. Speaking of good work, Joe Hotchkiss (2nd place) has been at The Augusta Chronicle since 1999. Ordinarily that’s only 27 years, but it’s 83 in newspaper years. Another Chronicle veteran, Susan McCord, wins third.
B ES T R A D I O S TAT I O N What we’re looking for here is good music. Don’t give us any static on this! Last time we checked, we’re in the South, which suggests Kicks 99 might have an edge in this category, and sure enough, the ballots confirm it. In second place, what used to be the #1 radio station on the planet — WBBQ, of course — and in third, what used to be called WAFJ — now The JOY FM, of course.
