The global behavior of society is characterized by great movements that have never happened in such a volatile way in previous decades. The fast flow of information, the proliferation of social network, the different mindset of individuals towards universal values and the uncertain economic and political atmosphere have caused a radical transformation in the business models of companies; these factors affect every productive sector and force the companies to join to the technology and industry trends that rule in such environment.

Hernán Morales Espinoza

In Auge, we have set out to contribute with the entrepreneurs and agents of change for the country’s development with a series of opinions and perspectives that can change the way of doing business, but, mainly, that have a direct influence in a positive transformation of the country and its social structure.

Erika Karina García Padilla

We have talked about the value that we have as Mexicans, and we will continue this path towards a country with better opportunities and greater options of growth in every aspect; economic, academic, entrepreneurial, social, cultural, and more. We have a tough year ahead of us, a year loaded with political proposals and promises that won’t have any result if us, citizens, do not get involved with individual actions that demonstrate an improvement in our joint performance, this way, we will be able to push the authorities to execute the initiatives made by us, the people. There is still a long way to go, we are constantly working to convey the best of our country and create business opportunities for our country’s benefit; a country of warm and hard-working people that dreams of a better country.

“COMPANIES SHOULD MAKE THE USER THE CENTER OF THEIR PRODUCTS AND COMMUNICATION.”

LEADER’S REVIEW… Head of Creative in Google Latin America, he has worked in great advertising agencies and has built the strength of international brands. He has been awarded by Cannes, Clio, D&AD and One show. He is currently developing innovating campaigns of digital marketing in The Zoo, from YouTube. He recently offered a talk for coparmex Jalisco.

CREATE THE INCONCEIVABLE THE FUTURE OF THE INDUSTRY IS IN THE HANDS OF THE USER The world has changed so much that we no longer understand it. for a moment in my career, I had to rethink my profession when I decided to question the paradigms of the communication industry and embrace the new formalities that are transforming every sector of humanity. Internet has been of the most important discoveries in the history of humankind, and the way that it has influenced in people is currently setting the way in which companies must address the user. This means that by placing the user in the first place, everything else is done automatically. We live in an era that some people call “the era or audiovisual dialogues”. We are facing the bad habit that people don’t read as they used to, they prefer immediate answers in audio or video. For this reason, the use of audiovisual productions is growing fast. Nonetheless, writing is also transforming, we can’t forget this new trend of saying everything with emoji. Analyzing the web’s most seen videos, I have come to the conclusion that we have no clue of what people really care for. On the contrary, these videos could be in tv’s prime time. But, mainly, the most important premise is throw away the brand’s agenda and replace it by the people’s agenda.

Working with Google, YouTube, exactly, I learned that we must place the user at the core of our products and communication. If we place people in the center of our work, they will be the ones that will make us famous. The communication industry is one of the slowest companies. The production of an audiovisual advertisement takes more than 6 months, meanwhile, the world has already changed. For example, Chewbacca’s mom filmed herself with a phone and reached 150 million views in the first day, while the advertising industry continued with the approval of the commercial. How do we beat the speed of content created in the internet? First, we must understand that the user is our only boss. Second, we must use one of the virtues that experience has taught us: brands are the world’s best storytellers. I quote Pixar’s ceo –which might be the greatest entertainment industry in the world– “Good stories are the number one business tools in the world”, it is not your business plan, not even your product; what truly matters is the story behind it. Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s ceo, said that the stories, the good ones, can change the society way faster than politics.

IGNACIO ZUCCARINO HEAD OF CREATIVE IN GOOGLE LATIN AMERICA

execute it, communicate it and display it through mobile gears. People in latam connect 196 times per day to their phone devices. The vast majority of these connections are from people looking for recommendations, this is an opportunity that enterprises are not seizing, companies should be creating content derived from the persistent interests of people. My recommendation to companies is that they should try to create content with the persistent interests of people, with what truly matters to the user. Finally, every brand will have to build a bot. These days, people don’t want to talk to human beings anymore, they want to talk with a chatbot. Therefore, companies have to think in their voice strategy, how they want to talk to people. The formula of success for the upcoming startups is the following: take any industry and add it artificial intelligence.

Moreover, there is a reality that we need to embrace; there are more mobile phones than toothbrushes. Every client, regardless of the sector, is connected 24/7 through mobile devices. Nowadays, the number of search queries in Youtube is growing twice than the search in google.com. This means that people don’t want to read anymore, they rather watch the content than read it. This implies that there must be a radical change in mentality as well as the adoption of a mobile approach: whatever I do, I must Special coverage thanks to Día del Empresario coparmex. ASSERTIVE COMMUNICATION THE SKILL OF A SUCCESSFUL DIRECTOR

THE TERM COMMUNICATION COMES FROM THE LATIN COMMUNICARE.

“To effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different.” MA. TERESA GÓMEZ MALDONADO CERTIFIED IN INTERNATIONAL COACHING WITH NEUROLINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING

Anthony Robbins

Communication is the most important process in the human being’s interaction. It is the exchange of ideas, feelings, and experiences. Self-esteem and communication are closely related; depending on the sender’s self-esteem, the communication will be better or worst. We communicate every day but we don’t always show the message that we really want to transmit. Have you ever been in a situation where you say “yes”, when you really wanted to say “no”? That, right there, wasn’t an assertive communication. Assertive communication is the most desired human conduct because it is considered as the key to reach success in life. The fields where this skill is vital are the professional and working fields, even more for people in high management positions. Assertiveness is a way of communication that involves attitude and awareness of the emotions from both, the sender and the receiver. By communicating assertively, a person conveys the true message that he or she wants to send, in a consistent, clear, direct, honest, and respectful way. Assertive communication has to do

10

AUGE DE MÉXICO | INNOVATION

with emotional factors and the intern features of personality. For this reason, people with good selfesteem have a greater ease to be assertive. However, there are two poles that must be taken care of in any personal-verbal communication, one is passivity and the other aggressiveness. Communicating in an assertive way is to manage the skill of being in an intermediate point between the two opposites. A passive behavior leads to: - Defensive behavior - Ignore the feelings of others - Desire to win no matter what - Suffer due to not winning an argument - Attempt of manipulation Have you ever said something and be seen as authoritarian? It is because you were aggressive. Aggressive people feel superior than others. By asking a favor, they automatically assume that the other person has the obligation to do it. The person seems to be happy but he or she is actually feeling lonely, anxious, misunderstood or unloved, and, mainly, angry when things don’t come out the desired way. For centuries, society has shown us a culture that teaches a way of communication that leads to conflicts and discomfort. It has also set a guideline to hide our feelings and pretend in front of the others. However, assertive communication tends to establish a link with empathy, even when the person doesn’t agree on certain point, or even in the discussion. In addition to communication, we must also listen in an active way to capture the totality of the message of the speaker and interpret it from our point of view. Listening to the arguments of the others doesn’t mean that we accept them or share their opinion, but rather that it is an easier way of saying “no” to the messages that we are receiving without creating a conflict.

Assertive people have the following features: - They know what they want - They are fair - They give and receive compliments - The reject and make petitions - They keep calm and project serenity - They express discontent and share their happiness - They face critics and give constructive feedback

ASSERTIVINESS MEANS UNDERSTANDING YOUR NEEDS AND CONNECTING WITH OTHERS.

Assertiveness is a skill that can be learned and whose main advantage in the professional field is a correct relationship with colleagues, employees and superiors, by mastering small skills, such as: say no, ask for a favor, express a complaint, ask for a change of conduct, compliment someone, control the corporal or non-verbal communication, interact in groups, intervene in a conflict, negotiate and discuss.

When a person manages to develop assertiveness, he or she reinforces the positive image in a social level, improves the confidence in the expressive skills, obtains a greater emotional satisfaction and reaches goals that are proposed from the communication. As Cal Le Lun said: “Assertiveness is not what do, it is what you are”.

An assertive person has developed the skill of starting a conversation from a collaborative point of view. This means that the person doesn’t run over the speaker with opinions, nor does he or she feel oppressed in a chat where he or she only receives information without bringing something to the table.

TRENDS IN BUSINESS MANAGEMENT: THE NEW ACTIVE LEADERSHIP

These days, each aspect of our life is in constant evolution, from technology to our behavior. This factor is combined with innovation to create a new leadership that characterizes for its complexity and freshness. Currently, we can watch the new generations take control of the economy and the sales and industrial productivity. This new leadership can be seen when the highest positions in power in big companies are being occupied by people from the millennial generation. We are now seeing company ceo’s or high executives of 30 years old, when a few years back, these positions were occupied by mostly men over 45 years old. Beyond age, there are other barriers that have taken down, like the gender barrier, proving that the value of a leader isn’t marked by gender. The expert in leadership and business empowerment, José Peguero, explains us that talking about leadership in Mexico has several ideological aspects about the definition of “leader”. There are different types of leadership with different methods, but they are opposite, such as the “power by the power itself”, and new trends like “the use of reasoning”. The power by the power itself leads to the authoritarian chief that is always carrying a whip in the hand to secure the fulfillment of the demands, which haven’t been justified and that many times, the tools needed to execute the task are not provided. The consequence

12

AUGE DE MÉXICO | INNOVATION

THIS TRANSFORMATION HAVE AN INFLUENCE IN WORK TEAMS IN ORDER TO INCREASE A COMPANY’S VALUE. of this leadership is that goals and objectives can’t be reached, but, mainly, that there is a minimum level or even a non-existent commitment from the work team. This causes a constant staff turnover, caused mainly by employees that, even though they like their jobs, they try to get away from a bad superior. Moreover, there is a general feeling in our country that managerial positions are occupied by people that have been chosen by someone

but haven’t really showed their skills. In other words, they are leaders because they are in a superior position but don’t have the strength to decide or take a project to reach success by themselves, but they rather depend on the work of people below or behind them. Unfortunately, these people, known as “hidden leaders”, don’t have the support that they deserve and their growth is limited. Lately, in spite of this panorama, a new has emerged, a leader that understands the new ways of thinking and used them for the benefit of the project and the work team. This new trend of influence is called New Active Leadership (nla by its Spanish acronym).

THE NLA IS A GENERATOR OF PROPOSALS AND IDEAS.

THE NEW LEADER TAKES CARE OF DETAILS AND MAKES THINGS WORK.

Its main goal is to incorporate the new generations for the expansion and consolidation of business missions at the same time that it increases the chances of a maximum performance of the workforce by creating efficient and selfsupporting teams with open channels to horizontal and vertical communication. It unifies corporate entities and breaks hierarchy barriers, suggesting a new comprehensive model that joins the staff with the executive team. In addition, the hoarding of privileged knowledge has been erased and this leader has understood that the communication of privileged information contributes to the creation of new leaders, forming a comprehensive ecosystem that prompts decisionmaking in every corporate level. It also provides the tools to the employers and employees so they can grow in a professional and personal way, making them feel as a key piece in the company’s structure. The new leader is always taking care of details and making sure that things happen. He or she lets the projects run and is constantly supervising them at the same time that he or she trains and guides each team member. The nla is a generator of proposals and ideas. It incorporates the team, asks for opinions and suggests new techniques; provides confidence to the staff and enhances their self-esteem. The new leader knows and understand that he or she is not enough to make things work, the help of the team members to reach goals is necessary.

IF A LEADER DOESN’T ENCOURAGE THE PERSONNEL, THEY WILL BE LEAD TO THE POINT OF NUISANCE AND TEDIUM.

with the work done, thus the active leader is actively seeking the short and medium growth of the team. This development creates a link between the company and the employee that lies in win-win, in other words, the company is financially growing at the same time that it guarantees the growth of its labor force. If a leader does not encourage the personnel, they will be lead to the point of nuisance and tedium. The fact of creating new leaders doesn’t jeopardize a leader’s position, on the contrary, it opens paths and doors to the future. The new leader must look for new challenges and assume the responsibility of making the team grow.

The personal development turns into a core empowerment to guide the employer to feel satisfied

NUBE SMART LIVING Mexico, United States, Canada, India, Sri Lanka, and France converge in a smart living solution in the palm of the hand through a technologic solution that controls gas supply levels through an app.

Pioneer in the influence of internet of things in housing solutions and smart living in the Mexican market, Nube is implementing its IoT project, dedicated to the LP gas sector to solve the current inefficient relationship between distributors and consumers, which affects public security and the environment in the major cities of Mexico. This is a smart living solution at your fingertips; with it, you can watch the gas supply levels through an app and a gear installed in your stationary gas tank to send the lecture of the gas levels directly to the supply industry in real time. Thus, Nube will allow gas companies to have the complete control of their distribution process, the relationship with clients, and, mainly, their responsibility and commitment to the community. The disadvantages of the gas supply through pipes and tanks running in the streets are the insecurities in case of any malfunction in the container, the traffic produced in big cities and the environmental damage that it creates. For this reason, Nube’s mission is to eradicate the social and environmental impacts that derive from this type of supply.

16

AUGE DE MÉXICO | NATIONAL PRIDE COMPANY

The strengths of Mexico, United States, Canada, India, Sri Lanka, and France join in a cross-border participation of human talent. The advanced technologic infrastructure of Nube has allowed the company to create alliances and contributions with companies like Microsoft, Arrow Electronic, and CR Wireless, working together in the creation of solutions. This initiative is a great opportunity, both for the gas company and the Mexican society, since it will make the supply process more efficient, reduce costs and the citizen’s will be able to verify their consumption and schedule gas orders in a more controlled and personalized way. Regarding the implementation of IoT technologic trends in the country, Nube’s executives know that it is time for small business, companies, and consumers to adopt these solutions with a firm belief and disposition to improve the individual’s quality of life and continue with the social development that involves public security through these types of projects –which reduce pollution and exponential dangers.

Latin American society is beginning to understand that the values obtained through this kind of technology, unify and simplify the aspects of daily life in a way that they transform the future of the world’s economic development. The line between physic and digital is being erased, and the boundaries are merging with each other. Innovation through software continues to permeate the different industries and revolutionizing business and operation models for companies. Technology and innovation can be independent; the current trend, however, is their coexistence. It is important to point out that in the past two decades, most of the innovations have been technological components. And, even though the differences can be confusing, it is necessary to establish a distinction and accept the reality that they can work together or apart. This is the only way that companies will reach an innovating transformation that will allow them to explore every aspect of their sector.

“SIMPLICITY IS THE DESIGN DIGITALIZANDO PHILOSOPHY IN TECHNOLOGY LA ERA MODERNA PERSPECTIVAS SOLUTIONS DEVELOPED BY NUBE.” TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION CAN COEXIST OR BE INDEPENDENT.

Nube is governed by three principles that are the result of the posed questions when starting a new project: Who are they doing it for? Why do people need it? How does it changes their lives? The answers to these questions have created a variety of patents and solutions to the industries, and, now, to the LP gas sector. The singular attribute that characterizes the design philosophy of Nube is simplicity. The entire creative process maintains the premise that technology must be treated in a very simple way. All the complexity of any project that directly interacts with the user must be below the root. If it is simple to understand, then you have a good solution.

TALENT LAND JALISCO CONSOLIDATES THE GREATEST INNOVATION ECOSYSTEM IN LATIN AMERICA. The ecosystem has been developed in approximately 6 months, formed by 600 allied internet communities and over 365,000 registered youngsters that interact throughout the entire year in over 100 events organized by Talent Network; events like Talent Nights, Talent City and Talent Woman. Jalisco Talent Land will be held in Expo Guadalajara in April 2-6, being the greatest innovation and technology event in Mexico and Latin America. The event has the support of over 100 allies, among which the following stand out: Google, Adobe, Bosch, Amazon, Cisco, IBM, Microsoft, Uber, Cabify, imjuve, la Universidad de Guadalajara, the Ministry of Innovation of Jalisco, Government of Guadalajara, Government of Zapopan and the Federal Government. This is a place where young people can develop their talent with the goal of creating educational and development opportunities. For this reason, diverse alliances have been created with over 700 universities through the National Association of Universities and Institutions of Higher Education (anuies by its Spanish acronym), the General Coordination of Technology and Polytechnic Universities in Mexico and the Tecnológico Nacional de México. It is important to emphasize

18

on the work that these institutions do with the collaboration of Universidad de Guadalajara, who is co-hosting the event through its initiative Talento UdeG, whose union provides 5,000 scholarships to outstanding students. Beatriz Helena Perdomo, Adobe’s marketing manager for latam, stated that there are 71 million unemployed youngsters in the world between 15 and 24 years; being the highest rate in history for young people. We are talking of the 13% in the world and translated to Latin America, it is the 17%. This is why projects such as Talent Land are of great importance because they are looking to bridge the gap. Thus, Adobe is sponsoring Creative Land, the artistic part of technology, “because we believe that young people will change the world.” Its first edition will be the greatest event of talent, innovation, and technology in our country, where 30,000 youngsters will gather to enjoy more than 1,500 hours of content.

As Aristóteles Sandoval, governor of Jalisco stated: “Talent Land is committed with Mexico and Jalisco. Our state stands out for being a land with over 15 transnational companies established in the Mexican Silicon Valley, in addition to 1,200 startups that are developing technology, and more than 6,300 talents that are boosting some more; today, Jalisco is the land of innovation.” Among the most significant collaborations, we find the followings: Adobe’s sponsorship for the creation of Creative Land; Google’s sponsorship for Developer Land: FairCoin cryptocurrency to Future Land; and the alliance that Metrocarrier, Cisco, and Xportal will make to provide 20GB of browsing that this edition of Jalisco Talent Land will have.

THE EVENT WILL BE HELD IN EXPO GUADALAJARA, FROM 2 - 6 APRIL, 2018.

“IN TALENT LAND, YOUNGSTERS DEVELOP THEIR TALENT WITH THE GOAL OF CREATING EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES.”

Moreover, in alliance with the Unity of Digital Government, the support of the Federal Government is established to carry out the world’s greatest Hackathon, with prizes worth more than $1 million pesos through 12 verticals. In this Hackathon, participants will try to solve daily issues within the subjects of environment, health, housing, financial inclusion, energy, mobility, culture, and education, among others. Talent Education 4.0 is also in the picture, a forum about the latest subjects in technology for over 1,000 teachers of middle school and universities; Talent Capital as well, where investors will share their risk investment experience in Latin America and the United States, with the goal of strengthening working connections between Talents and participating companies. Finally, Jalisco Talent Land will have the first edition of Talent Awards, a recognition granted to the most disruptive and outstanding talents of the year. The jury will be formed by the community of Talent Network, in addition to specialists, advisors, and allies. Moreover, the state is hoping to have a Startup Battle, a national competition that will be a showcase for the national entrepreneur talent.

“DECISIONS BY ALGORITHMS WILL ONLY EVER GET US SO FAR.”

LEADER’S REVIEW… Ankur Prakash has a 22 years of multinational and multicultural experience in the industry of IT in America, Asia, and Europe. His approach in the growth, transformation, and maintenance of business unities. Moreover, he has been regarded in the Top 10 most influential executives of Latin America by Nearshore Americas.

WHEN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE GOES WRONG REIMAGINING THE WAY THAT HUMAN AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE CAN COME TOGETHER, AND CREATE A BETTER WORLD Can a computer ever create a symphony that stirs our emotions? Can it truly understand the nuances of human nature, grasp our ambitions, our psyches? By asking ourselves these questions we begin to see the limitations of Artificial Intelligence (ai). But have we got a little too carried away and enamored with the possibilities? Warning lights In reality, the maturing of AI is a painstaking progression, littered with stumbles and mistakes. Last year, us citizen Joshua Brown had an autonomous driving accident when his Tesla slammed into the side of a tractor-trailer at 120 km/h. The event was a chilling reminder of the dangers of placing too much faith, too soon, in ai-based systems. Brown’s legacy warns of the risks of ai and reminds us that the supposed state of singularity (where AI exceeds human intelligence) is an extremely long way off, perhaps never to happen.

In the realms of autonomous driving, airplanes and other means of transport -the dangers of AI going wrong are obvious. The same applies for ai-powered Smart City grids that control the flow of traffic, or systems producing synthetic drug compounds, or even the dystopian scenario of subversive forces harnessing AI for biological and chemical weapons. Potentially, if AI goes wrong, the consequences could be disastrous. Art and science The more tempered approach would be to balance our expectations of ai, with an appreciation for humans’ unique form of intelligence. Computers will certainly outstrip us when it comes to complex mathematical equations, but can they ever attain the same degree of empathy, respect, emotional intelligence, and awareness of context? In fact, the more data that floods into our world, the more intuitive ‘gut feel’ decisionmaking is valued. ‘Decisions by algorithm’, as we could term them, will only ever get us so far: Steve Jobs had no evidence suggesting that people might want an iPad; Henry Ford certainly didn’t have any market data suggesting people wanted automobiles.

ANKUR PRAKASH VICE PRESIDENT, NEW GROWTH AND EMERGING MARKETS, WIPRO LIMITED

New world, new jobs All of this lead us to the point where we realize that AI may not have the crippling impact on employment levels that many of us fear. As we look towards ways of harnessing the power of AI, new jobs are created. In business, as we increasingly hand-off repetitive operational tasks to bots, entirely new domains are mushrooming in areas such as green energy, biotech, digital ux, mobile services, commuter transport, and FinTech, to name just a few. In each of these fields, new jobs are springing up from nowhere. As with every other major innovation and technology before it, AI has incredible potential to help us understand more about our world, further the progress of humans, and address some of our biggest challenges as societies. It will certainly have a massive impact on our businesses and our lives in general. Essentially, there is still a long way to go before we’ve truly grasped this technology. In the meantime, we should not forget that artificial intelligence can indeed go wrong.

So for business leaders today, the sweetspot will be in combining the science of ai (leveraging masses of data and structuring useful insights), with the art of human intuition. Making complex decisions, engaging in high-level negotiations, and rallying teams around a visions; these are all responsibilities that we can never simply hand-off to our ai bots. This explains why Data Scientists are one of the most highly-prized specialists today, as they have the unique distinction of straddling these realms of art and science.

The new industrial revolution is a latent reality in our country. Although the Mexican economy doesn’t have radical changes thanks to the automation of manufacturing processes, other nations are having interesting effects that our country should watch carefully to learn from them and be prepared for the massive arrival of industrial robots to the enterprises.

ROBOTICS INDUSTRY TRANSFORMATION OF THE ECONOMY AND CREATION OF EMPLOYMENT

The World Economic Forum shared studies that show the analysis on the behavior of the employment creation derived from the installation of industrial robots in the last ten years in Germany. The results present a positive perspective but there are still certain aspects to take into account. As a precedent, in 1994, Germany installed almost 2 industrial robots per 1000 workers, and in 2014, the number increased to 7.6 robots. The results after the analysis of the last 20 years confirm that the robot automation process doesn’t have a significant impact on the number of lost jobs. There are even suggestions that the impact on unemployment rate is null. Nonetheless, the other perspective of the study shows some beneficial conclusions for the macro-economy but not as attractive to the low sectors of employment. The industrial progress will be greatly benefited since it is estimated that an industrial robot does the tasks of at least 2 workers. This supposes an economic progress to enterprises because they will become more productive and will have greater competitiveness, regardless of their sector. The counterpart is that, although jobs won’t be lost, they will also not be created. The growing role of this new robotic revolution doesn’t’ lie only in the industrial sector. Indeed, it will be the biggest field of action because of its superior features of

24

AUGE DE MÉXICO | TECHNOLOGY

mechanical force, but there are also robots for other areas, from services and interaction with users, logistics, and health, among others. According to the study, in 1994 and 2014, 275 thousand jobs were created as a direct consequence of industrial robots. This means that the installation of these robots didn’t cause any dismissals but didn’t allow either to the creation of new employment, at least not as it was expected. There is an example in Switzerland where robotics arrive to positively transform the work panorama of the region. Mining robots were installed to substitute the work of people that had to descend to great depths to extract minerals. Instead, these people were “substituted” and are now working in a room in the surface, remotely controlling the robots that are now doing their previous tasks.

The difference between the European perspective on the arrival of automation to companies lies mainly in their vision: “Robots are nothing but a means to make companies more efficient in every level, benefiting both, the employer and the employee”. Another study made by the World Economic Forum concluded that the growth of robots and artificial intelligence will destroy a network of 5.1 million jobs by 2020. However, this number are based on polls and estimates. There is still no formidable evidence that prove the impact of robots on employment. On the other hand, branches of the robotics industry promise a greater work development. One of them is the space robotics, which in 2020 will have a value close to 4 billion dollars. By definition, space robotics manages the development of machines for a general purpose with the main feature of surviving in the outer space. This industry is creating new jobs for the design, programming, construction, and maintenance of these machines. These positions didn’t exist before and they are expected to increase subject to the incorporation of the private initiative to the sector. Mexico sees an opportunity area in this sector and is currently creating several projects with the goal of closing the existing gap in the market, compared to other nations. According to experts from the Laboratory on Robotics and Mechatronics of the Computer Research Centre of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional, the country has the talent and workforce to slowly compete with India and Arabic countries that are also pretending on joining to the market of robotics, which is currently dominated by Americans, Germans and British minds.

THE VAST MAJORITY OF INDUSTRIAL ROBOTS ARE DESTINED TO MANUFACTURING SECTORS.

In conclusion, the industry of robotics will come to transform the economy of the nations, both in positive aspects and not so favorable ones. Nonetheless, it definitely represents an opportunity of progress and development that will be implemented in every industry, from the manufacturing industry to health, logistics, services, and tourism industries among others. Applied to the national industry, it is an excellent opportunity to repeat the steps made in the automotive and airspace sectors and add a promising market to our country.

TECHNOLOGY IN THE REGION OF “BAJÍO” DIGITAL AND BUSINESS CONSOLIDATION

INEGI REPORTED THAT THE INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITY OF BAJÍO IN 2017 HAD AN INCREASE ABOVE THE NATIONAL AVERAGE.

MULTINATIONAL COMPANIES SETTLE DOWN IN THE REGION, ATTRACTED BY THE DIGITAL IMPLEMENTATION.

One of the most active zones in Mexico, economically speaking, has always been the zone of “Bajío”. The region is formed by parts of the states of Aguascalientes, Jalisco, Guanajuato, and Querétaro, in the last few years it has established a significant industrial corridor engaged mainly to the automotive, aerospace and high-technology industries. The adoption of digital era in enterprises was the beginning for the zone to excel in its different levels of economic development. according to numbers from the National Institute of Geography and Statistics (inegi by its Spanish acronym), the industrial activity of Bajío in 2017 had an annual increase of 4.3%; a number above the national average. Querétaro and Jalisco are the states with the greatest contributions to this level of development in the area. Querétaro distinguishes by its strength in the manufacturing of automotive parts and the aerospace industry. For over 10 years, international companies have seen an opportunity in the region to establish their operations and take advantage of an excellent workforce, as well as its infrastructure and storage capacity.

26

AUGE DE MÉXICO | TECHNOLOGY

According to the National Board of the Exporting Maquila and Manufacture Industry (index by its Spanish acronym), Querétaro is a success in the advanced manufacturers in Mexico, with a favorable perspective for its geographic location, its connection to the imported natural gas and by its leadership in the gross domestic growth that grew above 6.4% in the last decade. In addition, according to the regional report of Querétaro of 2016-2017 of the Tecnológico de Monterrey, the entity is cataloged as a state with a dynamic of constant growth and a stable and diversified economy. Moreover, its strategic location and its installed infrastructure benefit the population growth and the attraction of investment. On the other hand, Jalisco is known as the Mexican Silicon Valley for the great cluster of technology and software enterprises established in the region. Also, thanks to the efforts of the private and public institutions, Jalisco is also hub of innovation and entrepreneurial projects, as well as the take-off of startups of technologic solutions such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, cloud storage and more. According to data from the government of the state, Jalisco has the first place in job creation in the country. In the last 5 years, the state achieved an attraction of Foreign Direct Investment of 10,145m, boosting 215,000m in exports, creating 365,000 formal jobs. The growth of the financial activity of Bajío endorses the initiatives, created a few years back, to maintain a digital government, that even though it has a long way to go, has had a significant progress to enable government procedures. It also has a direct influence in the commercial fluency of companies and businesses. The digital adoption and transformation in Mexico enables the process on the supply chain of industries and creates opportunities that accelerate processes, paperwork, and access to information.

Nonetheless, there is still a challenge that Mexico has to face to continue moving forward in its digital and innovation transformation: mistrust. The main reason of this insecurity at the time of investment or consolidating the presence of production companies in the country focuses mainly on the growing uncertainty of not knowing the right time to invest. This is caused mainly by the nafta situation and the protectionist policy of the government of The United States.

THE ECONOMIC GROWTH OF THE BAJÍO REGION IS A CLEAR SIGN OF THE DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION OF THE COUNTRY. In addition to the U.S., countries like Spain, Germany, Israel, and Canada, are the main countries investing great amounts of money throughout our country. Even though these countries don’t depend directly on the political-trade situation of North America, they look for new markets and nations that have similar characteristics as the ones in our territory, and that offer similar benefits as us. To maintain the national and international companies settled throughout the corridor, Mexico must work on the certainty that it offers to the entrepreneurs and investors. Corruption and impunity are incompatible elements with the business development in any region of the world. Thus, the investment destined to the country can be relocated somewhere else that guarantees the safety and integrity of enterprises.

The settled multinational companies in the region that are attracted by the sales of the zone, as well as by the digital implementation, bring with them a great secondary operation that eases the economic development in the states involved. According to specialized entrepreneurs, it is estimated that this is an exponential growth of double digits, or even greater.

According to Ashwani Kumar, trade representative in the Indian Embassy in Mexico, India has been present in the Mexican textile industry for nearly 30 years; being one of the oldest businesses that Indians made with Mexico. Since then, a continuous development in the import of Indian textiles has developed. To continue with this commercial increase, the Indian Embassy has made connections directly with entrepreneurs and Mexican chambers such as canaintex and canaive to encourage them to attend to exhibitions in this Indian sector and thus, create business opportunities for both countries.

Dr. Siddhartha Rajagopal, executive director of the Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council (texprocil) states that India is the fourth largest supplier of textiles and the fifth largest supplier or ready-made-garments in Mexico, showing an annual growth of 8 to 10% in textiles and garments in the period of 2009-2016. From the $10.2 billion dollars registered in imports of clothes and garments made in Mexico, US$330 million came from India. Specifically, $6.7 billion dollars were from textiles, 2.1% corresponding to India (US $144 million).

The previous figures show that Mexico is one of the greatest importers of clothing coming from India. In light of the recent nafta negotiations, Mexico must take steps to strengthen its economy; the first step in that direction would be to reconsider its reliance on textile trade with The United States and strengthen its existent relationships with other trade partners. Doing business with India is one of the best options in this environment of economic and politic uncertainty in the world, whether it is the textile industry or other sector. But, do you know how to find the best company to make business with? Here is a quick guide with six useful tips that will help you:

5. Representative. Sometimes it is good to work with a local representative of your Indian company. 1. Website. Company’s name. Ltd, Pvt Ltd or without Ltd? financial records of companies that end with Ltd are available On Site or you can ask them by email. This means that you can know whether a company is profit or loss-making, and, more importantly, you can know how big or small the company is in terms of turnover. If it is PyT Ltd or a proprietary company, you can access to its information in the Registrar of Company in the website of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs of the Indian government. 3. Reputation in India. SALVADOR QUIRARTE VILLASEÑOR: UNSTOPPABLE IN THE RISE OF BASEBALL IN JALISCO

34

AUGE DE MÉXICO | COVER

The Caribbean Series 2018 in Jalisco had a revenue of nearly $50 million dollars for the entity; in other words, the city received an income of $1 billion pesos. After nearly 20 years out of the picture in our city, Salvador Quirarte, president of the Administration Board of Charros de Jalisco, has transformed the baseball stadium into the Mexican Capital of Baseball with international events like the World Baseball Classic in 2017 and, recently, the Caribbean World Series 2018. Working together with the sports president, Armando Navarro, they have headed a movement to awaken the baseball tradition in Guadalajara, with an excellent economic and sports organization that has placed the entity under the spotlight of international baseball, and has received the support of famous figures in the business world, as well as figures in the sports sectors. Charros is strongly involved with its supporters; the team has encouraged the comeback of baseball in the entity with a remarkable passion that had an excellent response from the people. The team is determined in maintaining its leading role in the Mexican Pacific League and win the title in the next season, in addition of continuing with their commitment with Jalisco’s society. Sitting in the stands, enjoying the great atmosphere of the stadium, we talked with Salvador Quirarte about the results of the Caribbean Series, about the team’s next projects and about his vision of sports as a factor for a social change in the country. AUGE DE MÉXICO | COVER 35

The 2018 Caribbean Series took place in Jalisco, how was the experience for the State? It was a great event for our state. We feel really satisfied with the excellent response from people, and from different figures that came to support the project. We had attendees from different states of the country, but also visitors from the United States, and from the participant countries such as Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Cuba and Dominican Republic. There is no doubt that this was a very special event for our city, for Jalisco and for Mexico. In economic matters, the Conventions and Visitors Bureau Guadalajara reported a revenue of approximately $50 million dollars; in other words, the city had an income of $1 billion pesos. Who were the people involved in the project? Authorities played a significant role in this project, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the governor, Aristóteles Sandoval, and the mayor of Zapopan, Pablo Lemus for the opportunities that they gave us. I would also like to thank each member of the Board who played a fundamental role in the development of this event. To the Mexican army, who had an active participation and to each and every person that was involved in the different areas of the organization. I also thank the owner of the event, the Confederation of the Caribbean, the Commissioner, the Presidents of the Leagues, and, of course, the Presidents of the teams of the Mexican Pacific League. Before the Caribbean Series in Jalisco, we hosted the World Baseball Classic. How will Charros maintain its place as the venue of these great events? There are many possibilities; we have demonstrated that we can continue hosting and planning great events. Mexico City is host of different events, such as Formula One, nfl, and nba, but when it comes to baseball, Jalisco will be the sports capital and epicenter of the country. Business and sports have proved to work well together. What is the role of society in Charros? Our main goal is to contribute as a sports organization to the social structure. Our community is tired of insecurity and the loss of universal values; in Jalisco, particularly in Charros, this is something that we have very clear. Forty-two percent of our visitors are adults with children, therefore, every day we play the national anthem in the stadium to show and teach respect for our nation, but, mainly, to show respect for the people that live in this great country.

36

AUGE DE MÉXICO | COVER

Moreover, our visitors have the highest education level; 79% of our visitors have a bachelor’s degree or postgraduate studies; proving that we take our commitment with Jalisco and Mexico very seriously, we are directly contributing with the improvement and development of the social structure. What about the support to young talent in the country? This is fundamental; the support to young people is one of the cornerstones of Charros. In Charros Academy, we encourage the youngsters’ passion, developing the next seedbed of great international baseball players. We also have the Academy DIF-Charros for children living in vulnerable situations, where we provide them with free food, clothes, and courses. We recently signed

a collaboration agreement with the Municipality of Zapopan, along with comude to reach our goal of creating opportunities for the society and take baseball to every corner of the state, creating an effective solution for the prevention of violence and insecurity. We are also looking forward to see one of these kids playing in our team. We are going to do our part to encourage Mexicans to play in the Great Leagues. The stadium had a before and after the arrival of Charros. After nearly 20 years without an active presence of baseball in the city, what is the reason of bringing the sport back? These 20 years were only a waiting period. Everyone thought that baseball was not going to work in Jalisco, but we proved them wrong. Even though Mexico didn’t make it to the finals in the

Caribbean Series, people came to the stadium and were completely connected to the game. The Team’s search began with Armando Navarro; with his effort and the support of the rest of the board, in only three years, we brought back the city’s passion for “the king of sports” by combining regular fans with thousands of new fans with a strategy based on a flawless organization, a high-level stadium with different amenities with a family environment and, of course, a great team. Before, Charros stadium was completely in disuse; but now, it is a completely functional space that is constantly upgrading, with an investment of over $140 million pesos from the Board, additional to the annual $12 million pesos for its maintenance. These numbers speak of a significant direct investment to the stadium, which continues being public and open to held different events.

38

AUGE DE MÉXICO | COVER

How would you summarize the effort that has placed Jalisco as the Capital of Baseball? We are very thrill and satisfied, first, with the fans, because this success wouldn’t be possible without them. We are also thankful to each member of the team, for their effort and support –which have been invaluable to reinforce the project in the city. The media has also been very involved since the beginning, looking out for the team and for the events that we held. However, we still have things to do, we want to continue with our baseball academies, and win the championship. Our current main objective is winning the championship because our fans deserve it. What is the future of Charros within the following years? We want to held world-class events. It is still very soon to be specific about it, but we are working on some projects that will place Charros and Jalisco in the spotlight of the sports world. Our passion and the fans’ have paid off, but we need to keep sowing to continue reaping.

“A CONSTANT REINVENTION HAS BEEN GRUPO URREA’S KEY TO SUCCESS.”

LEADER’S REVIEW… For 25 years, Alfonso Urrea has been the leader of the Tool Division in Grupo Urrea, continuing with the family legacy and leading the company’s institutionalization, transformation and growth processes of the company. Graduate of iteso and ipade, and with several business diplomas from Harvard, California Institute of Technology, Wharton, Berkeley, and Singularity.

TOOLS TO INNOVATE AND TRANSCEND Continuing with the family legacy that started with my grandfather, and then with my father, I have had the opportunity to be part of Grupo Urrea, a 100% Mexican company with a history and career of 111 years. Urrea is formed by two divisions: Bring water to life and Total solution in Tools and Locks; both divisions are leaders in the markets in which they participate and they are recognized in more than 20 countries in the American continent, including United States. We are one of the companies that manufactures more products in Mexico, with a catalog of over 6,000 different tools, and with a new production line each year.

However, innovation must be guaranteed. We endorse the quality of our products and raw material through lab tests in our Test and Innovation Center. This way, we secure the highest quality and grant the most convincing guarantee in the market. To innovate and transcend, companies must have the needed tools. In Grupo Urrea, we transformed our business model to support our distributors and clients with a strategy consisting on three stages: Before the sale: We provide consulting on the use and care of the tools, this increases productivity and safety in the workspace. We also develop a set of new products focused on the solution of specific problems that users face in industries like automotive, petrol, farming, construction, rail, and maintenance, among others. During the sale: We create stores specialized in tools that offer a comprehensive solution on the usage category in the same section. Each purchase becomes an experience of a unique brand for each type of user; these concepts are called Urrea Store and Surtek Store. After the sale: We have developed one of the biggest networks of authorized service centers in the country, promoting the importance of preventive and maintenance services in tools and gears.

MEXICO: FEEDING THE WORLD THE AGRI-FOOD INDUSTRY AND ITS EXPORTATION QUALITY

Avocado, tomato, berries, cucumber and many more food products made in Mexico are delighting palates throughout the world. Even with the grey environment created by the uncertainty of the North American Free Trade Agreement, the national agri-food industry keeps feeding different countries, conquering a market that in 2016 left sales estimated on $29,044 million dollars, and the expectation for this year is $33 billion with a surplus balance of nearly $4 billion dollars –representing a growth of 25% in comparison to last year’s balance. The strength of the industry can be seen in its productive transformation since it stopped producing in the traditional way and began incorporating technology in each process. Moreover, the social income has a great significance for the Mexican economy, since there are more than 7 million workers in the fields. Regarding this, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (sagarpa by its Spanish acronym) and the Mexican Business Council for Foreign Trade, Investment and Technology (comce by its Spanish acronym) recently signed a collaboration agreement. The agreement considers the presence and influence of

comce in more than 62 countries, from which, 32 have

a trade relationship derived from the agri-food and rural investment sectors. Opportunities are endless since the coordination of trade missions and the exploration of new markets can make a difference and create greater profits to producers and better prices to the final consumer; increasing global competitiveness. To reinforce the importance of these collaborations, it is necessary to emphasize the increase of the agrifood exportations to United Arab Emirates, which went from $7.8 million dollars to $20.3 million. This increase happened just a year after the visit of the Secretary José 44

Calzada to the region. During the first 5 months of 2017, Mexican exportations registered $8.03 million dollars in dry chickpeas; $4.22 million in malt beer; $1.54 million in bakery and bakery and lastly, $1.16 million in tequila. Following the trend of collaboration among the sectors, sagarpa and the Ministry of Economy made an agreement through the Agency of Commercialization and Development of Agricultural Markets (aserca by its Spanish acronym) and ProMéxico. This agreement focuses on integrating infrastructure, promotion strategies and training plans for producers and agroindustries for the diversification of international markets. It also seeks to boost the creation of business opportunities and the development of projects for the exportation of agricultural, livestock, and fishing products; mainly to new niches of the market in Asia, Africa, Oceania and The Middle East. On the other hand, sagarpa has continued with the efforts to secure the fair trade of agricultural products with the goal of maintaining a privileged sanitary status and establish our country as an exporting nation of healthy and innocuous food. Through mechanisms to accelerate and make the inspection tasks more efficient in the entry points of national mobility, the competitiveness of producer will be favored and the fields will be protected.

The National Service of Health, Safety, and Agri-food Quality is constantly working in the modernization of the regulatory frame and its harmonization with international guidelines, which has derived in a lower regulatory burden for producers, diminishing to 64 Official Mexican Standard of the previous 102. Moreover, these efforts minimize the risks of plagues and diseases entering to our country, which could affect the national agriculture, aquaculture and fishing productions. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (oecd) recommendations to the national authorities is to make selective verifications on meat-based products, favoring companies that historically prove responsibility in the enforcement of health and safety measures.

THE ADVANTAGES OF ANTICORRUPTION IN THE INDUSTRY AN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ON THE RISE

IF CORRUPTION WAS AN INDUSTRY, IT WOULD BE THE BIGGEST ONE IN THE WORLD. Corruption isn’t something new, and the truth is that, unfortunately, there will always be cases of bribery and impunity. However, we have analyzed the perspectives of citizens, scholars, entrepreneurs and public employees that concluded that corruption diminishes the economic development of the country, and with it, it breaks the growth quality of life of the citizens, poor, rich, young, old, it affects equally. In the words of the Secretary-General of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (oecd), José Ángel Gurría Treviño, corruption exists everywhere. More specifically, he meant

46

that there isn’t a country that is genetically more honest than another, but there is a different level of impunity, this means that greater or lesser opportunities must be identified and sanctioned. In an article published by The New York Times about the entrepreneurs from Monterrey and their role in public security, an opinion said: “Nobody is concerned about entrepreneurs acting as politicians, the real problem is that politicians behave like entrepreneurs.” This demonstrates the citizens’ lack of confidence to governmental agencies, thus, we must not be surprised that Mexico and Venezuela are the Latin American countries with the lowest appreciation for democracy, according to Latinobarómetro in 2017. Applied to the business scope, 90% of ceo’s considers that corruption and bribery are the main threats to any business, according to the 7th poll of ceo in Mexico. Another fact that we must consider in this general panorama is the information published in the study “Mexico: The Anatomy of Corruption” from the organization Mexicanos Contra la Corrupción y la Impunidad working alongside with the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (imco by its Spanish Acronym), which states that corruption costs between 9 and 10% of the gdp of the Mexican economy. Can you imagine that your annual utilities being split into tens out of the sudden? Maybe you are one of the five organizations in Mexico

that has been a victim of corruption or bribery, according to PWC consulting. Or maybe you are part of the 53% of Mexicans that declared to have paid certain amount to someone in order to have access to education, security, and justice, among other basic public services, according to Transparency International (ti). Whether you are part of the direct victims or not, corruption is a subject that concerns to your company and your legacy. Leaving negativity and the cruel numbers aside, there is still a resistance to stop this issue and reach a solution. Currently, there are companies and institutions that are adopting anti-corruption measures as a commitment and not as a compliance issue.

COMPANIES ARE ADOPTING ANTICORRUPTION MEASURES AS A SOCIAL COMMITMENT

53% OF MEXICANS DECLARED TO HAVE PAID A BRIBE TO HAVE ACCESS TO PUBLIC SERVICES.

Each day, there are more people realizing that the easy road of bribes only produces a momentary solution but it affects their economy on a higher level, on the short and medium terms. Even more, companies have also taken actions to avoid extortion cases and threats, where corruption comes through a violent and submissive path. The advantages of reaching an economy free of corruption will be reflected in a tangible and intangible way in a business culture that translates into benefits to the producer, the intermediary, and the final consumer. The ocde, the World Bank and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (unodc) recognize the comprehensive plan that the private sector performs in the fight against corruption, and claims a stronger bond between the public and private sector to make this effort. Moreover, they urge the correct training among the key members of the companies to understand the potential risks, schemes, and consequences of corruption. They also recommend to establish a code of anticorruption conduct and entrepreneurial principles to counteract briberies.

in the enactment of reforms and initiatives that promote legality and good practices, just as it happened –and continues to evolve– with the creation of the National Anticorruption System (sna by its Spanish acronym), responsible of Citizen Participation Committee (cpc) and also the creation of the Law of Administrative Responsibilities, better known as #Ley3de3.

Technology has come to have an influence in every aspect of humanity since analysis and applied studies to digital governments have shown that on-site govetrnmental procedures have been substituted by apps and online platforms that reduce the attempts of bribery in both parties. Also, through Big Data and a correct decision-making, there can be a greater control on companies and organizations, public or private, to avoid illegal acts. Six years ago, Thor Urbana was comprised only by two people with a laptop and a smartphone in a leased office. Nowadays, the company is present in 10 states of the country, working in international projects. They are one of the most important developers and investors in Mexico with a portfolio of over a million square meters in projects located in Guadalajara, Mexico City, Playa del Carmen, MĂŠrida, and Los Cabos, among others.

Thor Urbana believes in the authenticity of its projects. Exceeding expectations in each of the projects, they don’t allow series or repetitions. Instead, they focus in the authenticity and exclusivity in each development, committed to transform the quality of life of the citizens. Jimmy Arakanji states: “Our premise has always been to be true to our vision, which we have shared with our team so we can work towards the same objective. In conclusion, Arakanji shares his experience as head of the company: “I have always believed in the philosophy that success comes by taking risks and making mistakes; but it also depends on having firm beliefs, trying and never giving up. A successful entrepreneur is one that keeps believing in him or herself and the ideas. He or she must have a street instinct, getting out and meeting people and looking for the necessary relationships and opportunities.”

Our vision is the certainty that we have spread to those that surround us, from our collaborators to investors. They see our willpower and our hard drawn to take risks by saying “we will become the greatest real estate company in the country. With this vision and strategy, our team sees us and identify with innovation, the search of global concepts to deliver to the developments. The contagion effect is automatic when people see us acting with a determined vision and energy in the office.” In spite of the uncertainty atmosphere created by the political and commercial relations of Mexico with the United States and Canada, Thor Urbana builds trust in the foreign capital and contributes to the strengthening of the Mexican economy

Both nations, the U.S. and Mexico, are nations that complement each other in a very significant way. According to estimates from experts in the matter, nafta has made us the most competitive region in the world; this relationship represents nearly 600 billion dollars per year. “IT IS NECESSARY TO DEMOCRATISE FOREIGN TRADE IN MEXICO AND THE REST OF THE WORLD.”

LEADER’S REVIEW… Beatriz Leycegui has a broad experience in foreign trade matters in the public, private and academic fields. She has a master’s degree in International Affairs from the Columbia University in New York and has had several positions in the Ministry of Foreign Trade, the Department of Government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

THE STRENGTHS OF THE EXPORTING INDUSTRY THE VIRTUES OF MEXICO IN THE NEGOTIATIONS OF THE NORTH-AMERICAN FREE TRADE AGREEMENT (NAFTA). In my personal opinion, I hope that one day, trade and industry resembles to the expression of the great author Gabriel García Márquez regarding love in his book: Love in Times of Cholera, “[…] can be greater and more prominent faced to disaster”. The negotiation of the North-American Free Trade Agreement (nafta) comes in a crucial time in the world’s economy. Countries and industries are wondering about the most appropriate model to follow, and about the ideal trade policy that should be adopted. Against this background, protectionist leaders consider that the solution is to eradicate the free trade agreements from their economy and focus on local products. However, the reality is much more intricate. Although free trade agreements are perfectible, they can be upgraded and improved. Let’s not forget that we must put these tools in their right dimension and accompany them with a public policy

that guarantees their optimal use that can contribute to the growth and development of the nation’s economy. To understand the importance of the renegotiation of nafta, we must embrace the strength and contributions of Mexico to the trade with the United States. Since the eighties, Mexico has kept an excellent international relation in exportation-importation matters. There are 46 countries with which Mexico has active relationships with 12 free trade agreements. Nonetheless, its relationship with the United States is the greatest because it represents 81% of our exportations. The remaining is divided with Latin America, Europe and Asia, with a 5% estimated for each. In total, we have the world’s 12 place in exportation matters. Mexico’s path in international trade agreements has the goal of increasing the commercial and investment flow between the countries. in the years after nafta, exportations have increased 6 times, importations 5 times and the annual investment has increased 8 times.

BEATRIZ LEYCEGUI GARDOQUI FOUNDING MEMBER OF THE MEXICAN COUNCIL ON FOREIGN MATTERS

presented in the productive sectors, where only 5 of 19 represent 70% of exportations and 75% of the total is produced in 8 states, widening the economic and poverty gap in the remaining regions. Mexico must defend its place in the world’s economy and face Trump’s government impositions by not forgetting that the 25% of the produced items of the world are made in North America, representing only the 7% of the world’s population. Along with Canadians, we make up the third part of the U.S. exports and imports in the world. We are their number one partners and number two in foreign trade. We don’t only trade, but we produce together. Should we remind our northern neighbor that for each dollar that Mexico and Canada exports, there was a contribution of 40 and 25 cents respectively, to the American economy? This a high number in contrast to the 4 cents that the Chinese economy adds.

In spite of these numbers –that appear to be stimulating- the truth is that we haven’t evolved enough in the area. To grow along with the United State and Canada, we should have reached an annual growth rhythm of 5%, and we have only reached the half of the planned numbers. Above all, the main need and breakpoint is the democratization of foreign trade in every country. In Mexico, for example, 500 companies represent the 83% of exportations, which means that export opportunities are focused in a limited number of companies. Similar numbers are

The millennial generation, digital era, care of the world, and the politic and economic situation are setting the course of business strategies to seduce clients and gain their loyalty at the time of purchase decision. The individual actions that converge in the behavior of people reveal the current multidimensional performance of the consumer; they set and transform the direction of business. kpmg International published a global analysis (Me, my life, my wallet) where 10,000 people in the United States, the United Kingdom, India, and China were interviewed. EVERY DAY THE CONSUMER’S BEHAVIOR HAS A DRASTICAL CHANGE

THE CLIENT’S WALLET CONSUMERS SETTING THE DIRECTION OF BUSINESS

58

AUGE DE MÉXICO | SERVICES AND TRADE

Day by day, the consumer’s behavior has a drastic change, influenced, mainly, by the sociopolitical, economical and technological changes. According to Manuel Hinojosa, consulting partner in kpmg Mexico Customer Experience, companies must understand the forces that influence in decision-making and preferences of the consumer. The global dynamic forces companies to reconsider their strategy, redirecting them to understand what is currently driving the consumer’s behavior. This demands a new, intelligent and multidimensional model that uses predictive knowledge to help companies to really know their clients and understand the customer’s journey; the road that is covered through the different contact points or interrelation with the organization until acquiring a good or service. According to the model based in the analysis of kpmg, a new approach that involves the client’s behavior, finances, and demography for corporate decision-making is necessary. New influences have an effect in the consumer’s daily motivation, behavior, and purchase decisions; such forces are continuously changing the conventional predictions of when and why a client opens its wallet. Studies have shown that we don’t only need to explain what clients do, but also why.

The mentioned study refers to “Los Cinco Mis” (The five my), which are the main shopping behavior factors of a consumer. My motivation: features that boost behavior and expectation. My attention: the ways in which we draw our attention and approach. My connection: relationship with digital and information gears. My time: balance of time limitations and the way they change. My wallet: wallet administration and expenses. Manuel Hinojosa states: “this is the best time to be a client. Never before the consumer has had this kind of power, but it has also forced companies of every sector to face a true battle for loyalty, and, mainly for their own growth. Differentiating a business, whether through its own product, service or experience of the customer –a combination of the three in most of the cases– requires a deep understanding of the expectations that they have, as well as an appreciation of the forces that boost their purchase decisions.

Knowing what consumers really value in an experience and which elements they keep in mind as reference point, will help to rule out the unnecessary efforts and focus on what truly makes a difference.” Another concept that companies have to understand is the behavior of the customer’s wallet, which is the changing relationship that people have with money, including the forces that influence on when, where and why they spend.

KPMG INTERNATIONAL PROVIDES SOLUTIONS TO CONNECT COMPANIES WITH CONSUMERS. On the other hand, the current generational gap is more noticeable than in previous decades. A company that understands the movement of the modern world must analyze the different generations of their clients in order to know their expectations and meet their needs. The generational differences represent a new perspective on how people’s life events can help companies to prevent the changing needs and preferences of the consumer. In conclusion, its mandatory to understand the signals of change to keep up with your clients. Finding the correct ways to extract and analyze these signals will help companies to better predict the changing needs and expectations of consumers. It is time to ask yourself the following question: do I know my client as well as I think or as well as I should?

CREDIT RECORD IN THE DIGITAL ERA ONLINE BEHAVIOR AND FINANCIAL CREDITS

“THE CREDIT RATING PROPOSED BY CHINA WILL BE GRANTED BY THE STATE AND NOT BY THE FINANCIAL MARKET.” It looks like a sci-fi script but reality is that the plot from the Black Mirror’s first chapter of the third season will become a reality for over 1.3 billion people. The clash between fiction and real life is creating counter-opinions again after the Chinese government stated its intention to create a social credit that will involve different branches of information sciences in collaboration with the financial-commercial industry.

60

AUGE DE MÉXICO | SERVICES AND TRADE

This social credit system will grant a score in different categories, such as the ability to fulfill tasks, preferences and interpersonal relationships. In other words, through a massive collection of personal data (Big Data), a secret algorithm will monitor, classify and evaluate citizens according to their activity in social networks, shopping habits, web search, apps and more. We know that this is already happening with the collection of data among Facebook and Google users, but the difference is that these companies use our information in an invisible way to improve their services and provide advertising solutions to their clients; while the Chinese government is pretending to create a score for each citizen –which will be an element of great influence at the time of applying for a job, housing and education options, or even dating opportunities. The collection, management, and security of these mega-data will be developed by private companies; the main company being Sesame Credit, part of Ant Financial Services, considered the biggest fintech enterprise of the world, and is a member of Alibaba Group. The outline plan for the construction of the social credit system is planned to be carried out within the next years since the government didn’t reach its implementation in 2014, as intended. This happened, mainly, because a great part of the population doesn’t have an

active credit life, in addition to the gap between the judicial credibility and mass acceptation. On top of that, tax evasion and financial frauds continue to increase in the country, which make the normativity and implementation of these type of systems harder. Nonetheless, the state estimates that the instauration of the personal credit rating will be achieved by 2020 as a mandatory basis.

TWO CORNERSTONES WILL RULE THE CHINESE CREDIT SYSTEM: TRUST AND CREDIT

The main goal of this project is the endorsement and strengthening of honesty; this value will increase the social environment of the citizens under two fundamental concepts: trust and credit. But how will this rating work? The secret algorithm will calculate an individual’s activities in a scale of 350 to 950 points based in 5 things. First, credit record, which will consider activities such as the prompt payment of services and bills. Next, the capacity to fulfill obligations, grading a person’s potential to meet debt-related obligations. The third point is the verification of personal information, in other words, the veracity of the given information. Heretofore, the difference with existent credit records in the West are barely noticeable, however, the following points show the flaws related to the handling of delicate and private information, but mainly the faults in the subjective parameters and value systems that determine a person’s score. The fourth aspect is behavior and preferences. Under this system, the habits of the citizens will be judged; thus, for example, if someone plays video games or watches T.V. for 10 hours in a row, that person will be considered an idler person, affecting his or her credit record. This way, the government will push its citizens to avoid shopping certain things or avoid unproductive behaviors. The last point refers to personal relationships where online interactions will be judged; if the individual shares positive messages on the nation’s economic condition or about the government, the score will increase.

CHINA WILL GRANT A SOCIAL CREDIT RECORD THROUGH BIG DATA.

THE CREDIT SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO BE INTRODUCED IN 2020.

ideologies; the freedom of expression could be at risk because of self-censorship because people will avoid behaviors that can affect their score even when they don’t agree with the system. The Chinese government will award the trustworthy citizen with rewards and benefits, while it will send unreliable citizens to the blacklist; thus, it will affect the individual’s success possibilities, pushing the person to a behavior conditioned to the existence of an award or punishment.

In this context, China proposes to restructure the socialist market in a credit system with social aspect. The consequences that it will have in society are uncertain, but beyond the perspective on the subject’s handling, this rating implies a massive collection of high-sensitivity personal information that if it gets to the hands of people with radical

AP&ALZATI THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN MEXICO The importance of a correct legal and financial advice can make the difference in the consolidation of new companies that have an idea or concept as base in the business plan.

The business atmosphere of the last decades has created a significant growth in the enterprises dedicated to creative industries, information technologies, and innovation. In Jalisco, specifically, known as the Mexican Silicon Valley, the incubation of new projects and companies is always present. For this reason, assigning resources to the administration, protection and correct management of intellectual rights is one of the most beneficial investments that an entrepreneur can make in order to give an added value and establish its products in any market, both in national and international levels.

1. If the core of your business model relies in a creative idea, protect it. This means that you must be sure that no one else can use it without your permission, but, mainly, that no one else can make it their own and make you pay later for royalty incomes. Usually, creative companies have confidentiality agreements with specialized clauses that prohibit non-authorized uses of their ideas. 2. Protect your Institutional Image. 3. Register your ideas and don’t let anyone use them without your consent. If your project applies to have a patent, do it; otherwise, register it a business secret. Remember that geography is very important in these cases, make sure to protect your idea in your region, but if possible, protect it in the international atmosphere. With globalization, some other company could use your ideas in another country, and you might never be able to fight it if you never filed a business secret patent.

materialized in the opening of this space, located in Calle Juárez 200; exhibiting exclusive export tequilas and mezcals artisan-made. The enclosure extols the Mexican art with a plastic art gallery, ready to be acquired by the significant visits to the historic center of Tlaquepaque. With prior reservation, it offers special tastings for up to 20 people that want to immerse themselves in the world of agave distillates. The space that La Cata offers is ideal to spend good times among family and friends, even for social and exclusive business events.

The main advantage of La Cata is that you can have a sample of the tequila that you would like to purchase. Its catalog is made up by premium brands of hard access in the trading market, hence, it is the best option to find the best of these beverages and enjoy them in the selection process. Among the tequila labels in the portfolio, we can find the following: Adictivo (Silver, Reposado, Añejo, Extra añejo and cristal Extra añejo); Gold Cava (Silver, Reposado, Extra añejo, cristal Extra añejo); 916 (White, Reposado y Añejo); Gran Mayan con 3 destilaciones (Extra añejo); Senda Real (Joven and Reposado); 3 Ríos (White, Reposado, Añejo); Con Alma de Mujer (White, Reposado, Añejo and Extra añejo); Grand Love (Extra añejo); and Evaga (White, Reposado, Añejo and Extra añejo).

Tlaquepaque complements its tourist attraction with the incorporation of La Cata to the streets. There is no better place to know, taste and buy the spirit drinks with greater character in the world. It is no longer necessary to decide between tequila and mezcal; by drinking both, you will recognize Mexico and its pre-Hispanic culture, the culture that makes us, Mexicans, proud. Cheers!

The history of tequila is represented in every corner of La Cata, where with a special design and decoration, the enclosure pays tribute to the drink that is a result of the “encounter between two worlds”, since the technique has its origin in the European continent to transform an ancient raw material from Mexican ground. While tequila has been the most recognized Mexican drink, mezcal has found its own awakening and it can now be found in the best bars of the world. “Para todo mal, mezcal; para todo bien, también” a popular Mexican saying that says that you should drink mezcal when everything is wrong, and also when everything is fine; this saying preaches wisdom and praises its value. Its own nature, rich in handicraft production methods, has captivated the millennial generation with its signature smoked flavor, derived from the cooking process of the agave’s pineapples in conical stone ovens.

“COMPETING IS FOR LOSERS. OUR VISION MUST BE TO CREATE MONOPOLIES.”

LEADER’S REVIEW… Master’s degree in Administration, Engineering, and Mathematical Optimization; Iván F. Rodríguez has actively contributed to the successful transformation of great-scale companies and corporations. Creator of his own innovation methodology which includes the optimization of business models through industrial engineering and the continuous improvement of people, processes, and productivity.

DISRUPTIVE PRODUCTIVITY

INNOVATION PARADIGMS TO CREATE UTILITIES IN HYPERCOMPETITIVE MARKETS. Among all the virtues of the country, Mexico is mainly known by the talent of its people. However, we still have to place us in the world’s greatest productivity leagues. The question is: who will achieve this? Simple, the enterprises. The fundamental concept of the disruptive is to stop doing what we were doing and revolutionize our processes. Applied to the world of business, we need to implement a disruptive productivity to create utilities in hyper-competitive markets.

Productivity and economic growth are going downhill and the distribution of wealth is focused in a heterogeneous way. What is wrong and how do we fix it? I ask you, do you think that competing is good? The majority of entrepreneurs affirm it, but if we are thinking on competing now, we are part of the low economic development of the country and the world. Competing is for losers. Our vision must be to create monopolies (and not in the negative way). Let me explain myself: whatever we do, has to be the best there is in the market. Why? Because the speed of copy of competitors will get to you. Being 10 times better will allow you to create an advantage of at least 3 to 5 years, thus you will be able to recover your investment and generate the expected wealth. If you are going to compete, your product or service has to stand out of the rest, on the contrary, the probability of success won’t be better. If you want a differentiated company, you have to understand these three paradigms that I have selected for you:

We have to make a radical change in our mentality. For some time now, the world has had a serious problem regarding the economic growth of industries, and only a few companies have found the answer to transcend in their sector.

Advanced robots: They are the average height of a person, and for the first time, they are capable of doing not repetitive activities thanks to its ability to synthesize thinking, process great information, read through sensors and do a task. The future is robotics and automation.

What is more important, being an innovator or being productive? The world’s trends speak too much about innovation, but the reality is that productivity is more important. The key is to be an innovator to produce more. I repeat once more, there is something wrong with this planet.

3D print: The new generation of 3D printers are starting to push the manufacture process out based in molds for the injection of plastic and metal. These industries are critical in the development of economy and product manufacture, nonetheless, the new generation of 3D printers allow

IVÁN FERNANDO RODRÍGUEZ HUERTA CEO BUNDY REFRIGERATION

the manufacture of these materials without investing in the expensive molds to produce only one product. This means that your product catalog will be more diverse without representing high costs in their manufacture. Great-scale customizing: Personalizing each product is possible thanks to a new process in which the user makes a special order that reaches the manufacturer, who won’t make the same mass product anymore to later be placed in a storage and then put on sale. Thus, this new paradigm will allow the consumption of the product even before its manufacture takes place. If you want to believe, you have to be productive. Industrial revolutions have demonstrated us that mass production creates wealth. Nonetheless, the generational shock has caused a gap in which people rather pay more for personalized or custom-made products than products that were made the same and in great quantities. The model of the fourth industrial revolution allows the creation of custom-made products for the consumer through massive processes, increasing productivity and thus, increasing wealth generation.

To achieve this, there must be a support from expert people to develop promotion, sale and image plans, among others. “My career is based in a cluster of experiences and challenges, the harder a task might be to me, the more attractive they become. It is very important for us, artists, to relate to different areas in a global level to cope with the challenge of growth that the current world asks.”

REVILLAGIGEDO NATIONAL PARK PROTECTING THE NATURAL PERPETUITY

74

AUGE DE MÉXICO | LIFESTYLE

There is no doubt of the natural wealth of the geography of our country. however, sometimes, the exploitation of resources, tourism activities and overpopulation cause a deterioration that is irreversible most of the times in regions with a high level of biodiversity. With this premise, diverse federal organizations joined efforts and coordinated the support for research projects made by a wide network of scientific groups that concluded with the cohesion between interested sectors and the government to issue the maximum level of protection to natural areas to the National Park Revillagigedo; this will guarantee its conservation by strictly prohibiting the building of hotel infrastructure and any kind of fishing in the entire zone. The national park is the most pristine reserve of Mexico and with the greatest world relevance for the marine and terrestrial conservation. The zone is formed by a group of three islands and one small islet of volcanic origin geographically isolated, Socorro, ClariĂłn, San Benedicto, and Roca Partida. The area is located 328 km from Cabo San Lucas and 661 km from Manzanillo, Colima. The importance of Revillagigedo was recognized in 2016 when it was registered in the List of World Heritage of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (unesco). Nonetheless, since 2004, the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (conanp by its Spanish acronym), had already stressed its importance in its Program for the Conservation and Handling of the Reserve, describing it as a strategic zone for the generation of information in biologic sciences of earth and sea, situation that gives it a scientific relevance as a natural laboratory, given its island features and geological processes to which its communities and ecosystems are subjected, offering great expectations for the study of the processes of colonization, dispersion and adaptation of species, among others.

A decade earlier, in 1994, it was declared a Natural Protected Area in the category of Biosphere Reserve. With all these recognitions, the park has been taken care of and preserving from the deterioration caused by human, nonetheless, with the naming of National Park, it is expected that this protected zone of 14.9 million hectares –islands and marine portion- will be integrated to The Eastern Tropical Pacific Marine Corridor. This protection prohibits entirely the fishing throughout the area, secures the absence of individual, shared or communal private property. Without the need of expropriating or acquiring, the sea and island territory will be of the state, completely public; also the establishment of hotels won’t be allowed. This is part of international commitments of Mexico to the Convention on Biological Diversity. There are three marine ecoregions in Revillagigedo Archipelago; the Mexican Pacific, the Gulf of California and the Indo-Pacific, which provides it with a great diversity of species. This is truly an Island arc that comprises a part of an underwater mountain chain where the four islands are the top of volcanoes that emerge above the sea level. The highest peak is Evermann Volcano in Socorro Island, 1050m above sea level. Its origin is associated to the activity of

tectonic plates of the Pacific, Rivera, and Cocos, which abruptly emerge from the abyssal plains of the oceanic ground, 4000m below sea level. When searching for it in a map, the concept of desert island comes to mind because it is far enough of the continent; but this aspect gives it a unique feature for the study of evolution. Moreover, it has a natural beauty and exceptional esthetical value; it is an examples that represents biological and ecological processes of marine

It also contains natural habitats for the on-site conservation of biological diversity, particularly the threatened species with universal value. Revillagigedo houses some of the greatest aggregations of marine fauna in the world, such as sharks, manta rays, big pelagic fishes, marine mammals, and turtles. The coastal and shallow zones of the archipelago are fundamental for the reproduction of the humpback whale, as well as for the breeding and nutrition of their calves. In total, there are 983 species; 68 of them are under some kind of risk, and 88 endemic species, in other words, they only live in this part of the world. On the other hand, the declaration of Revillagigedo as National Park reaffirms Mexico’s commitment with global efforts to preserve the environment in benefit of every people and every nation. The country has reached a total of 182 Natural Protected Areas, which together formed nearly 91 million hectares, almost 70 million in marine zones and 21 million in terrestrial zones.

COMUNICA EN PARALELO: LEADERSHIP IN THE ENTREPRENEURIAL ECOSYSTEM Comunica en Paralelo is a company focused in the development of communication and leadership skills for growing transnational and national companies.

It all began with the establishment of Rubig by Gonzálo Díaz-Báez, a company focused on corporate public relations in Mexico. After a deeper interaction and knowledge of the country’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, Díaz-Báez sensed the need for leadership skills within the corporations since they didn’t manage to convey their message, thus, they lack a true engagement with their clients and collaborators. Within its service portfolio, Comunica en Paralelo offers three types of consulting through personalized sessions or online universities. The first is a certification program in leadership emphasizing in the skills of a leader, his or her connections and team management. The second type is known as Acupuncture programs, named like this because they have a complete personalization to upgrade the specific areas that the companies seek to develop in their work team. Finally, another service is the content events, where the client’s information and developing content is placed in great-scale events such as annual conventions and leadership or training forums.

VALUABLE BENCHMARK Comunica en Paralelo gives advice to entrepreneurs to turn them into true leaders that will transform our country’s reality.

Working in Comunica en Paralelo is an experience that challenges the standards dictated by a work culture of previous decades and that is still standing in most of the productive sectors in the country. The company is formed as an institution of leaders instead of employees, in other words, its business model keeps with its mission and contributes to diminish the inequality gap in the labor market through a plain structure where there are no titles or positions, but every collaborator acts as leader in his or her area of expertise instead. Díaz-Báez claims that if the labor model isn’t changed in a utopic way, the dream level of work culture in Mexico won’t be reached.

Thus, the challenge began and with hard work, the time of communicating the concept to the entrepreneurial society arrived, though it wasn’t an easy task. Success came but not where it was expected. The label was first known and recognized by foreigners. The first selling points were located in boutiques in Puerto Vallarta and Cancun. Wholesale clients were located in the United States; afterward, Takasami entered to the European market with a store in Ibiza, similar to the one located in La Gran Plaza shopping mall. International recognition secured the commitment of Rosario Mendoza with her people, reason why she decided to undertake and make Mexican women part of her success. Currently, Takasami has formed a collaboration network with women from Mazahua and Huichol ethnic groups, and women from communities in Oaxaca, Chiapas, Michoacán, and San Luis Potosí. Afterward, other type of companies also approached to them; companies that were looking for a unique place for the development of their talent, such as team building, co-working sessions and coaching methodologies, using the kitchen as a tool for the professional and personal growth of each participant. Finally, a club of chefs was also formed with the goal of offering open courses to the public with the greatest chefs of the city as teachers, where in addition to learning, participants can also have a unique experience through a precise selection of courses.
