CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION Welcome to this audio course on preparing to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering, or FE Industrial and Systems examination! I will guide you through the course material.

If you have decided to take the FE exam, I think it's safe to assume you are aiming towards a PE license that's Professional Engineer. The FE exam is the first step in the incredible journey to PE licensure, recognized as the gold standard in engineering. Once you pass your FE exam, you can get certified as an Engineer In Training. After completing the relevant work experience as an EIT certified professional, you will be eligible to obtain your Professional Engineer license.

The FE exam is meant for students who have recently completed an undergraduate engineering degree or are about to graduate. The exam is the starting point in the engineering licensure process. Passing the test allows you to demonstrate your technical knowledge and skills in the domain of engineering.

The purpose of this course is to help you prepare for the FE Industrial and Systems exam. Moreover, you will gain a solid understanding of the steps you need to take to begin your PE licensing process after the exam.

The FE exam is administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying. The NCEES reviews the contents of the FE exam every six to eight years and updates the specifications for the tests. Engineering professionals from various disciplines participate in content surveys administered by the NCEES. The reason for the surveys is to ensure the contents of the exam are in sync with current engineering curriculum and industry needs. Ultimately, the exam tests students for the knowledge and skills they must demonstrate in their professional practices.

Right now, I will give you a brief overview of this course. I will tell you about what you can expect as we go through the material together. Thank you, again, for your interest in this AudioLearn test preparation course. If you are ready, let’s begin.

I'll start with the course conventions and content. That means the concepts and methods I will use to present the course material to you. The course is divided up into fifteen chapters. You will find that those chapters are, in turn, divided into several smaller sections.

I will provide a small introduction to each chapter where I will name the different sections coming up in that chapter. Near the end of every chapter, I will present a small quiz to you. The quizzes typically consist of ten questions. You will find the quiz material in the Follow Along PDF Manual; I’ll explain more about that in a moment.

You are encouraged to take the quizzes in the manual and consult the answer key to see how well you are retaining the course material. Alternatively, I will discuss the correct answers in the lectures. So, you can pause the audio, take the quiz, and then listen for the correct answers if you want. Yet another option is to take the quizzes directly from the audio. Here, you'll need to pause the audio after every question. With this option, you may not have ample time to answer the questions. You'll need to replay the audio as well if you want to hear the answer choices more than once. To get the most from this course, do what works best for you.

To help you summarize and retain what you learn, I will end every chapter with a list of takeaways. This list will include the most important information you must remember from each chapter. You can expect around ten takeaways per list.

Earlier, I mentioned a Follow Along PDF Manual. With every AudioLearn test preparation course, you get access to a Follow Along PDF manual; it is a supplemental study guide. You can print out the material or simply download and read it in digital format. The manual contains summaries of important course material as well as links to supplemental information. It also contains all your chapter quizzes and your final exam.

I recommend using your PDF manual to write additional comments and notes as you see fit. So, print it out if you can, but again, do what works best for you.

Many lectures are best understood if you can sit and follow along with the PDF manual as I go through the material. If, however, you are only able to listen while commuting to work, for example, ignore the manual temporarily. Consult it when you are in a more appropriate setting. You can still get valuable information just by listening to what I

have to say. I do suggest, though, that you listen to the entire course at least once using the Follow Along PDF Manual as a supplementary guide.

Many learners find repetition to be an extremely effective and helpful technique during their exam preparation. We have tried to incorporate this technique into our courses.

Soon you will discover that I will repeat many terms and concepts throughout the course. When you hear ideas that are repeated, even multiple times, take note of them.

We consider them to be very important concepts. This is to ensure that you thoroughly understand those concepts and are able to recall this important information effortlessly.

I wholeheartedly recommend your listening to every chapter in this course at least twice, or even more. It will be extremely difficult for you to fully understand everything in just one listen. And be prepared; I am about to cover a great deal of information, including relevant facts, terminology, techniques, and suggestions for supplemental study.

Now, I want to give you an outline of the course material I will present to you. This is just to prepare you for the content coming up. I hope that much of what you hear in this outline motivates you to want to listen and put your best effort into your exam preparation.

In the next chapter, I will give you an overview of the FE exam, its importance, and the steps you can take to advance your career in engineering.

From there, I will cover the eligibility, registration, and scheduling requirements of the exam. I will talk about the test center regulations and results and retake policies. There is also a section on general tips for effective exam preparation.

Next, in chapter three, I will give you an overview of the knowledge areas of the FE Industrial and Systems exam. From chapter four onwards, we will dive right into the specific topics from those knowledge areas.

In chapter four, I will cover mathematics and engineering sciences. I will talk about various concepts in analytic geometry, calculus, and linear algebra. Then, I will go through thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, statics, dynamics, and materials.

After that comes a lecture on electricity and electrical circuits. From there, we will move on to ethics and professional practices and engineering economics, which is chapter five.

This section will include codes and ethics licensure, agreements and contracts, and professional, ethical, and legal responsibilities an engineer must fulfill. I will also touch upon public protection and regulatory issues.

In the next section, you will learn about various concepts in engineering economics. I will cover discounted cash flows, evaluation of alternatives, types and breakdown of costs, cost analyses, and depreciation and taxes.

This will be followed by a chapter on probability and statistics. You will learn about permutations and combinations, sets, laws of probability, probability distributions, and functions. After this, there is a section on estimation, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, linear regression, and experimental design.

Then, I will get into the specifics of modelling and quantitative analysis. This will be chapter seven. I will discuss data, logic development, analytics and linear programming, and optimization. Chapter seven will end with a discussion on stochastic models and simulation.

Chapter eight is about engineering management. In this chapter, I will cover four sections which are, principles and tools in engineering management, project management, performance measurement, and decision making and risk.

Next, I'll talk about manufacturing, service, and other production systems. Specifically, manufacturing processes, manufacturing and service systems, forecasting, planning and scheduling, and process improvements.

From there, I will move to chapter ten, which is facilities and the supply chain. This chapter covers flow, layout and location analysis, capacity analysis, and supply chain management and design.

The next chapter is about human factors, ergonomics, and safety. I will talk about the impact of human capabilities and limitations in a work environment. You will also learn about safety and industrial hygiene requirements. Finally, I'll explain the various

concepts in the ergonomics discipline. This will include biomechanics, cumulative trauma disorders, anthropometry, workplace design, and macro ergonomics.

In chapter twelve, I will discuss the specifics of workstation design, motion economy, predetermined time systems, and work sampling. In addition, you will have a lecture on work measurement standards and learning curves.

Chapter thirteen covers all the concepts relevant to quality. I will take you through quality management, planning, assurance, and systems. This chapter also contains information on quality control. It includes control charts, process capability, sampling plans, and OC curves.

In chapter fourteen, I will talk about requirements analysis and system design, functional analysis, and configuration management. You will also learn about risk management, life cycle engineering, and reliability engineering.

The course will end with a summary of the steps you need to follow once you pass your exam. What happens when you achieve the first milestone in your journey to the coveted Professional Engineer license?

You have a final exam waiting for you at the end of this audio course. This exam will include questions based on the content from all the chapters. It is designed to help you get an idea of the questions you'll see on the actual test.

You can probably tell we have a long list of topics to cover.

Take your time and work at a pace that feels comfortable for you. Listen as often as you can. Make sure you thoroughly understand all the concepts in a particular chapter before moving on to the next one.

I recommend that you retake written portions of the test questions I present, especially if you get any questions wrong. This will help you to completely master the course material and better grasp the concepts I present.

Remember, the whole purpose of your taking this course is to put yourself in the best position to ace your FE Industrial and Systems exam. The more you know the material, the more prepared and confident you will be.

A PE license indicates that you have met all the desired standards of a stringent procedure for obtaining engineering licensure. It gives you an edge over your contemporaries and makes you more marketable. As a result, a PE license can make you stand out to potential employers.

Having a PE license also shows that you've met rigorous requirements in your education, work experience, and standard examinations. It’s a symbol of high ethical standards of practice that you must adhere to throughout your career.

A professional engineering license signifies that you are willing to put in the extra effort to provide high quality services. It enhances your credibility and assures your employers of your skills and competence. And it opens doors for you to better career opportunities.

Engineers who work in public safety and are in charge of projects related to public health and welfare must hold a PE license. Also, only licensed engineers can work as independent consultants, designers, estimators, and government engineers or educators. A PE license even gives you the flexibility to set up your own private practice.

Professionals with a PE license can often significantly increase their earning potential.

Engineering professionals with a license can work as consulting engineers and seal engineering work for clients, be it public or private.

A PE designation is a must if you want to prepare, sign, and seal engineering plans for submitting to a public authority for approval. Many government agencies and educational institutions look for a PE license when hiring engineers for higher level positions.

For the purposes of this course, it's safe to say that an FE exam starts a domino effect on your engineering career. FE certification demonstrates that you are dedicated to pursuing excellence in the field of engineering. If you have an FE certification on your resume, you're more likely to impress potential employers and secure a job immediately after graduation. And, as you get "hands on" experience as an engineer under a licensed professional engineer, you can complete the work experience requirement. This allows you to qualify for and take a PE exam and finally get a professional engineer license.

The journey from taking your FE exam to obtaining a PE license enhances your skills. It allows you to hone your expertise. This entire process allows you to master the intricacies of core engineering principles in theory; you can eventually apply them in a real world scenario as well.

Now that you know what an FE exam is, and why you must take it, let's go through the how part.

The Fundamentals of Engineering exam is administered in a computer based format.

The exam is offered in four testing windows each year. Those windows are January to February, April to May, July to August, and October to November. You can appear for the FE exam once during any of the "two month" testing windows. Note that you cannot take the exam more than three times in a twelve month period.

The test is administered at "NCEES approved" Pearson VUE testing centers. In order to take the FE exam, you must be a student in the final year of your undergraduate engineering program. The engineering program must be EAC or ABET accredited. This is the minimum requirement, which means that you can appear for the exam after graduation as well. In other words, a graduate student pursuing a Master's or PHD in engineering is eligible to take the exam.

The FE exam is comprised of one hundred and ten questions in a mostly multiple choice format. However, you may find some questions in slightly different formats. For example, in a multiple correct option question, you have to choose all the correct options from a given list. Other types of questions include drag and place, point and click, and fill in the blank. For this course, we cannot replicate "drag and place" and "point and click" questions. Those question types are specific to the computer based part of the exam. As their names imply, you may have to drag or click on various parts of your computer screen to answer those questions. Regardless of the type, all questions are scored as either correct or incorrect. You will not receive any partial credit on a single question.

The exam questions are relevant to the subjects in a regular EAC or ABET accredited Bachelor of Science Engineering program. The questions are provided in two

consecutive sessions. Each session contains around fifty five multiple choice questions that are arranged by knowledge area categories.

The FE exam doesn't incorporate the adaptive testing format. This basically means that each question you get on the exam is not based on your responses to the questions you have already answered. During a session, you can choose to respond to questions in any order. You cannot, however, review or change a section after you submit it. While you are answering questions in one particular section, you do not get the option to check or answer questions in another section.

It's important to remember that there is no wrong answer penalty on the FE exam. So if you can't solve a particular question, it’s best to take an educated guess.

All the questions you do not answer will be scored the same way as wrong answers.

Consequently, you have nothing to lose by guessing.

On an FE exam, everyone's questions will be different. This is done through a “liner on the fly” algorithm. The central system randomly determines unique questions for each test taker. Although each candidate's exam is unique, the questions will be similar in terms of the difficulty level.

You will have five hours and twenty minutes to answer all the questions on the exam.

The exam appointment also includes signing a nondisclosure agreement, a test navigation tutorial, and a scheduled break. So, the entire exam appointment time is about six hours when all is said and done.

During the exam, you will get access to the most current version of an NCEES supplied reference handbook in PDF format. It comes with a search function for ease of use.

You can ask for special accommodations if you meet specific eligibility criteria as defined by NCEES. The eligibility criteria includes having a documented disability covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act. You can also receive accommodations if you have a scheduling conflict due to a religious Sabbath or military appointment. You must make this known during the registration process. When you register, you will be given instructions about how to submit your accommodations request.

Now allow me to go over the eligibility requirements, registration, and scheduling process for the FE exam.

The eligibility criteria for the FE exam is different for different states and territories. The criteria are determined by each state licensing board. Familiarize yourself with your particular state licensing board requirements at WWW dot NCEES dot ORG slash boards. Do this prior to registering for your exam to avoid delays in the process.

Before you register for your exam, you need to create a "My NCEES" account. You can create one at account dot NCEES dot ORG. Be accurate when providing your information when you create your account. This information will be used in your appointment confirmation letter. Your first and last names must be in English. Your name should match the name on your government issued ID which you will need for entry to the test center. Also note that you can have only one "My NCEES account."

To start the registration process, log in to your online My NCEES account. Then, select the register button and simply follow the instructions that appear on screen. You can pay for the exam during the registration process. The FE Industrial and Systems exam costs one hundred and seventy five dollars. Pay the fees online with a Mastercard, Visa, or American Express credit card.

You may have to file an additional application and pay a separate application fee to take the FE exam. This is only if your state licensing board requires you to.

Now let me talk about the scheduling process.

After completing the registration process and paying the exam fees, you will receive an authorization email. This email from NCEES will include confirmation of your eligibility to schedule your exam appointment. You can then proceed to schedule your exam time on the NCEES website. To start the scheduling process, log in to your My NCEES account and then click on the "schedule" button. From there, just follow the instructions.

I recommend that you schedule your exam as early as possible; seats are reserved on a first come, first served basis. Scheduling early will allow you to get an appointment that works best for you.

As I mentioned earlier, you can take the exam once in each testing window and a maximum of three times in a twelve month period. The countdown of this twelve month period begins with your first exam attempt. However, these requirements may vary under certain state licensing boards. Be sure to learn about the policy of your state licensing board at the NCEES website.

The authorization to schedule your exam is only valid for twelve months. If you don't schedule your exam within this time frame, you will lose your registration fee. Also remember that the final deadline for scheduling an appointment time is one full business day before the exam date.

Once you complete the scheduling process, you will receive an appointment confirmation email from Pearson VUE. This email is to confirm your identity and the location of your test center. It also confirms the time of your exam appointment and which exam you are going to take. Use this email to verify that your first and last names on the appointment confirmation letter match your full name on your government ID. You must consult with NCEES before your exam day if the name on the letter does not match your name on your ID. Report any discrepancies you notice, even minor ones. To avoid any delays during the check in process, remember to bring your appointment confirmation letter with you on your exam day.

If you decide to not appear for the exam, you can cancel your appointment through the NCEES portal. Whether or not you receive a refund may depend on the date when you cancel the exam. You can only cancel your appointment if you do it at least forty eight hours before the exam. This way, you will be eligible for a registration fee refund. This refund will not include a fifty dollar administrative fee. You can expect to receive any applicable refunds within seven to ten business days. Refunds are processed automatically. They are issued to the same credit card you use when you register for your exam.

If you decide to reschedule your exam for another date, you can do so through your "My NCEES" account. Make sure that you reschedule your exam at least twenty four hours before your exam appointment. For rescheduling, you will have to pay a fee directly to Pearson VUE.

It is always a good idea to reschedule your exam before the forty eight hour mark from your actual appointment. Otherwise, if you reschedule within twenty four to forty eight hours prior to your exam, you will have to pay a higher fee. These rules are valid even if a test center remains open during inclement weather. No exceptions will be made for any candidate who cancels or reschedules the exam due to the weather.

There are, however, some special circumstances that allow a candidate to reschedule without paying a fee or cancel and receive a full refund. These circumstances include illness, whether yourself or an immediate family member. Death in the immediate family, a disabling traffic accident, court appearance or jury duty, and military duty are also valid excuses.

In such a scenario, you have to provide reasonable documentation to NCEES within fourteen days of your original exam date. The documentation should confirm the reasons behind your inability to take the test on the scheduled day. You can contact NCEES directly if you have any problems relating to the payment of registration fees or getting a cancelation refund.

OK, now I'm going to provide you with some general but effective exam preparation tips.

The first step is to make yourself familiar with all the knowledge areas and the number of questions to expect for each one. Then, you can prepare a solid study schedule that allows you to allot appropriate time for reviewing each of the knowledge areas.

Sticking to a schedule helps to ensure that you cover all the necessary material. You do not waste too much time on less important topics. Also, with a good schedule in place, you're less likely to procrastinate and become unmotivated. Preparing in advance will boost your confidence level. It will also relieve stress on the days leading up to the exam.

You will be given the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering reference handbook to use during your exam. So, to ensure that you make the most of it, download your free copy from the NCEES website. It's a good way to familiarize yourself with the sequence of charts, formulas, tables, figures, and other relevant data. You can also choose to buy the hardcopy edition. However, it is wise to opt for the PDF version; it will be more like the handbook provided to you during your exam. Working with the familiar format will be a plus for you on exam day.

You can also make use of the practice exams offered by NCEES. They will help you get an idea of the level of difficulty and specific types of questions you can expect on the actual exam.

As I mentioned earlier, the FE exam consists of one hundred and ten questions. You will have five hours and twenty minutes to answer them. That means you have roughly three minutes to answer each question. Don't get hung up on strict time frames, though. Some questions will take longer to answer than will others. So, track your time based on larger chunks of questions. Get a sense of where you should be at the one and two hour marks.

Be aware of the clock, but don't obsess over it. That pulls your focus away from the test.

During your preparation, practice solving questions within the time limits. You increase your chances of passing the exam if you solve the highest number of questions in the least amount of time. So, practice is extremely crucial. Get a sense of how many questions you can answer in one half hour, then one hour. Again, plan your timing based on larger groups of questions, not individual ones.

Spend extra time on the areas where you feel you need improvement. The more you practice answering questions, the easier it will be for you to recall important information on your exam day. And again, use the quizzes included in this course to help you identify your weak spots.

While you review the course materials, make a habit of writing down everything you already know about the topic. Then, compare your notes with the contents of the course material. This way, you can identify the areas where you are lacking. Of course, it goes without saying, absolutely no cramming. It's totally pointless and does more harm than good.

Your preparation doesn't end with a review of the course material. Make sure you visit your test center a few days before your exam. Familiarize yourself with the directions, traffic situation, and parking areas. You want to avoid any delays that might cause you to rush around and panic at the last minute on test day.

Throughout your preparation process, ensure that you follow a healthy routine with adequate breaks and leisure time. Constantly worrying about the exam and ignoring your wellbeing will negatively affect your performance on test day. It's a good idea to get 14

some help from other test takers as well. Talk to students who have taken the FE exam or are currently preparing for it. Exchanging study ideas, notes, and relevant tips can be extremely helpful. The day before your test, gather everything you need to bring on exam day, such as the required documents and your approved calculator. Then, relax and get a good night’s sleep.

On the day of the exam, plan to arrive at least thirty minutes before the start time. You want to make sure you have enough time to go through the check in process and settle in at the testing center.

Now, I'm going to talk about the things you need to bring to the testing center on the day of your scheduled exam appointment. Let's start with IDs. You can bring any one of the following IDs: An ID issued by the US government A valid passport or a US military ID Your ID needs to be valid. It should display an expiration date, your name and date of birth, a recognizable photo of you, and your signature. You can't use your student ID, but if you have a valid US military ID without a signature, it will be accepted.

The name on your ID should match the name you provided on your appointment confirmation letter exactly. It's a good idea to bring a printed copy of your appointment letter to the testing center. It will help you complete the check in process faster.

You may have heard me indicate that the use of a calculator is allowed on this test. The calculator you bring to the testing center must be NCEES approved. Make sure you review the list of approved calculators given by NCEES. You can find information about the calculator policy in your Follow along PDF Manual on page five. You will also find more information about the registration and scheduling process on page four.

Now let's go over the items you are allowed to bring into the testing room. The list includes: The ID you used during the admission process.

An approved calculator, without the cover.

Key to your test center locker.

Reusable booklet and marker. This will be supplied by Pearson VUE. Eyeglasses, without the case.

Light sweater or jacket.

And items included in the Pearson Vue Comfort Aid list. There's a link to the list on page five of your PDF manual.

Next I'm going to talk about the things you cannot bring into the testing room.

This list includes: Cell phones, handheld computers, and personal digital assistants, fitness trackers, pagers, and other electronic devices; Watches, wallets, and purses; Hats and other head coverings unless they qualify as religious apparel.

Bags, coats, books, notes, pens, pencils, erasers, food, and beverages.

Be aware, this list does not cover all the prohibited items. On test day, bring as little with you as possible just to play it safe.

You must store all your belongings in designated areas outside the testing room. Most likely, there will be small lockers in your test center. You will be assigned your own locker and given a key to it. Make sure you turn off all electronic devices before storing them in your locker. If you lose or misplace any personal items, or if they are stolen, the test center will not be responsible.

Your test center will provide some comfort items such as earplugs, noise canceling headphones, and tissues. Along with these items, any item on the Pearson VUE comfort

aid list does not require preapproval. Again, you can find a link to the comfort aid list on page five of your Follow Along PDF Manual.

If you wear a brace, hearing aid, or use eye drops or mobility devices, you can bring them into the testing room. These items will be visually inspected by the test center staff, who will not touch you or the item.

If you wish to bring any item that does not appear on the Pearson VUE Comfort Aid List, you will have to request it as a testing accommodation. This needs to be done during the exam registration process. It must be approved prior to the scheduling process.

A very high level of security will be maintained at the testing center. You will be monitored throughout the exam. Both audio and video recording may be conducted in the exam room. You cannot eat, drink, chew gum, smoke, or make any noise that disturbs other candidates in the room. You do have the option to ask for noise canceling headphones or earplugs if you feel the need to use them.

Now, I'm going to take you through the check in process at the test center.

Right after you arrive, you will be given a copy of the NCEES CBT exam rules and agreement. You must review the document and agree to comply with the rules by providing a digital signature. Then, a Pearson VUE representative will check the items you have brought with you. The representative will confirm that you have no unapproved items. If you do have any unapproved items, you can place them in the test center locker.

The Pearson VUE representative will then take a digital photo of you. After that, you will be required to provide a palm vein scan. The purpose of the palm vein scan is to digitally verify your identity. Your palm vein image is also required to protect the security and integrity of the exam. Everything you provide during the check in process will be securely transmitted and stored with your exam results. That includes your signature, palm vein scan, and your photo.

Once you complete the check in process, you can enter the testing area. In the testing area, you will be required to confirm your identity. A proctor will ask you to provide

another palm vein scan. Note that you must provide a palm vein scan each time you leave and return to the testing room.

After completing your identity verification and confirming the exam you’re taking, the proctor will provide you with a reusable booklet and marker for scratch work. Then, the proctor will take you to your workstation to begin the exam. By the way, I don't know if you caught what I just said. Not everyone in the test room will necessarily be taking the FE exam. So, don't stress if you notice others acting contrary to what you would expect.

Of course, if you are properly focused on the exam, you shouldn't even notice anyone else.

You are not allowed to talk to any other candidates once you enter the testing room.

Right before your exam, you will have two minutes to accept the terms of a nondisclosure agreement. Then, you will be given an eight minute tutorial. The tutorial will demonstrate everything you need to know to navigate through the computer based exam.

During the exam, you can take one scheduled break. You can take this break after you complete, review, and submit about half of the questions on your test. A full official break lasts twenty five minutes.

You may use less than the total amount of time for your scheduled break if you want.

The time you do not use for your break is lost. It is not added to your test time. You are allowed to leave the testing center during your scheduled break.

When you return from break, the exam proctor will readmit you into the exam room.

Make sure you factor in time for this and a security check when you return from your scheduled break. Once your twenty five minutes are up, your exam clock resumes automatically.

When it comes to unscheduled breaks, you can take as many as you want during the exam. To take an unscheduled break, you have to raise your hand to notify a proctor.

Your exam time clock still counts down during unscheduled breaks. So you'll be essentially reducing your total testing time by taking additional breaks.
