MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR Navigating the uncertain times continued at the Audain Art Museum (AAM) through 2021. The strategic decisions and operational adjustments made at the onset of the pandemic proved to be a positive pathway to ensure a safe place to work and visit. The Museum remained open with slightly reduced hours, new colleagues joined the team and Dr. Collins and the team continued to re-imagine the role of the Museum in the broader community to ensure this important cultural institution remained resilient and relevant. Members and the public found a visit to the AAM a safe and stimulating experience during these in times of uncertainty. The Board of Trustees provided guidance and encouragement for new initiatives which enhanced the Museum’s offering. Board Committees embraced their responsibilities to ensure policies were reviewed and appropriate to the current landscape. The Art Acquisitions Committee maintains a forward focus, and continues to explore the work of emerging British Columbia artists, as well as highly recognised established artists in the province. The Committee recommended a number of new works which were accepted into the Permanent Collection. The recent establishment of the Audain Art Acquisition Fund supports the growth of the AAM’s holdings. The annual Illuminate Gala and Live Auction fundraiser was transformed into an exciting virtual event. The evening broadcast was centred on a live auction conducted by Heffel Fine Art Auction House, with musical entertainment by Jaycelyn Brown and a performance by Arts Umbrella. Guests were treated to a wonderful catered dining experience delivered to their homes, courtesy of The Lazy Gourmet. The 2021 Gala was the most successful to date providing the necessary funds to sustain growth in engagement and exhibitions. This year’s report highlights the many achievements through collaboration of a dedicated and creative staff team and the Board of Trustees, building on our vision “To be a transformative experience for appreciating the art of British Columbia. Unique and evolving exhibitions from Canada and around the world distinguishes what we do.” Realizing the vision would not be possible without the continued support of the Founders, Trustees, members, volunteers, Audain Art Museum Foundation, The Audain Foundation, corporate sponsors and supporters. We look forward to an exciting year featuring creative engagement initiatives and world class exhibitions as we welcome guests back to this special place.

Sincerely,

Sue Adams Chair, Board of Trustees

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR & CHIEF CURATOR The Audain Art Museum (AAM) proved to be highly resilient to the pandemic challenges of the past year, while boldly moving forward with an exciting Special Exhibitions program, inventive updates to the Permanent Collection galleries and a wonderful variety of engagement efforts. Such vitality is a testament to the skillful guidance of the trustees, a high performing staff, our generous community of founders, donors and sponsors, a dedicated group of docents and volunteers, an enthusiastic membership and the thousands of visitors that appreciated this wonderful collection and building in 2021. The RESERVOIR by Rebecca Belmore exhibition from the fall to the spring was a critical achievement in the Museum’s history, as this internationally recognized artist-activist created new installations for her multi-media presentation accompanied by the grunt gallery’s Wordless publication. Over the summer, the Itee Pootoogook: Hymns to the Silence and Louie Palu: Distant Early Warning exhibitions, organized by the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, delighted visitors with drawings and photographs of the Arctic. Reece Terris’s Like a Bridge micro-exhibition in the fall marked this artist’s entry into the AAM’s holding via documents of an ingenious 2016 installation in East Vancouver. The Museum’s Permanent Collection of historic and contemporary BC art thus continues to grow, with support from the Audain Foundation as well as private collectors and artists. A process of strategically redeploying paintings, sculptures and photographs throughout the Permanent Collection galleries has begun as well as the introduction of more recent acquisitions, all in conjunction with the production of new didactic information for visitors. Season 2 of Tuesday Night Talks attracted an increasing number of online participants to learn about key pieces in the AAM’s holding directly from their respective makers. The second iteration of Alta + Audain: Fine Dining Art Experience sold out every Friday night through the summer, as guests were treated to sampler tours of the Permanent Collection and Special Exhibitions followed by Alta Bistro’s incredible gourmet dinner. The Museum’s ongoing financial stability is rooted in an annual disbursement from the AAM Foundation endowment fund and augmented by Audain Foundation grants; alongside generous individual and charitable foundation donations, corporate sponsorships, municipal and federal assistance, memberships, shop sales, facility rentals and admissions. The 2021 virtual Illuminate Gala & Auction was the most successful fundraiser in the Museum’s five-year history, as staff and volunteers were able to produce an entertaining broadcast that culminated with a live auction by Heffel Fine Art Auction House, while attendees enjoyed a sumptuous home delivered meal courtesy of The Lazy Gourmet. The year ahead will certainly be marked by new milestones of art appreciation and engagement at the Audain Art Museum, as our community of supporters and visitors to this institution continues to flourish. Sincerely,

Dr. Curtis Collins Director & Chief Curator

The Extended Moment: Fifty Years of Collecting Photographs at the National Gallery of Canada February 8 – October 18, 2020

Exhibition opening of The Extended Moment with Sasha Suda, Director & CEO, National Gallery of Canada and Dr. Curtis Collins, Director & Chief Curator, Audain Art Museum.

The Extended Moment: Fifty Years of Collecting Photographs provided a rare opportunity for visitors to witness the international arc of photography from the 19th century to present times. This compelling exhibition overview of the medium’s social, economic, scientific and cultural impact on the world included European daguerreotype portraits, figurative azo dye prints from Asia, and experimental digital imagery by leading American and Canadian artists. The Extended Moment came to the AAM courtesy of the Scotiabank Photography Program at the National Gallery of Canada. This exhibition was funded in part by the Resort Municipality of Whistler, through the Province of British Columbia’s Municipal and Regional District Tax, along with hotel partner, The Westin Resort & Spa, Whistler. The exhibition was also part of the 2020 Capture Photography Festival selected exhibition program.

RESERVOIR by Rebecca Belmore November 26, 2020 - April 11, 2021

Site-based creation by Rebecca Belmore entitled Force of Labour, 2020, mixed media.

Over the past 30 years, Rebecca Belmore has developed a highly charged aesthetic rooted in socio-political commentary that hinges upon her Anishinaabe ancestry. As an internationally renowned multidisciplinary artist, from the Lac Seul First Nation in Northwestern Ontario, she has been featured at contemporary art fairs from Havana to Athens. The exhibition featured recent works and new site-based creations on display in the Museum’s Tom & Teresa Gautreau Galleries. These new works examined the disparity between wealth and poverty in Canada with poignant references to Vancouver, Whistler and the Sea to Sky corridor. RESERVOIR by Rebecca Belmore also included the North American premiere of Body of Water, an overturned tarped canoe rendered in aluminum that was commissioned for the 2019 Istanbul Biennial. RESERVOIR was made possible by Major Sponsor Dentons, Government Partner Canada Council for the Arts, and Hotel Partner Fairmont Chateau Whistler.

Itee Pootoogook: Hymns to the Silence June 10 – September 6, 2021

Itee Pootoogook (1951 ‑ 2014), Untitled (Man with Hoodie and Sunglasses), 2012, coloured pencil and graphite on paper, 49.5 × 64.8 cm, Collection of Christopher Bredt and Jamie Cameron, L2018.60.2

The first retrospective of Itee Pootoogook (1951–2014), this exhibition gathered more than 60 drawings from the late artist’s body of work. As one of the key members of the third generation of Inuit artists from Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Itee contributed to the transformation of the creative traditions inherited from his elders at the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative’s Kinngait Studios. The son of artists Ishuhungitok and Paulassie Pootoogook, cousin of Annie Pootoogook and nephew of Kananginak Pootoogook, he began his artistic practice in the 1970s with an experiment in film animation, later adopting drawing as his medium of choice. Known as a meticulous draftsperson and an inventive landscapist, Itee looked primarily to contemporary Northern life for his subject matter. Although he produced his compositions from a combination of memory and imagination, Itee also based many of his drawings on photographs, an aspect of his artistic process that further highlights his contemporaneity. Featuring a minimum of incident, these understated images celebrated the mundane moments that make up the everyday but also the flashes of unrivalled natural beauty that are the delight of all who live in the North. This exhibition was organized and circulated by the McMichael Canadian Art Collection and guest curated by Dr. Nancy Campbell.

Louie Palu: Distant Early Warning June 10 – September 6, 2021

Canadian Rangers from Resolute Bay and Arctic Bay train soldiers in Arctic survival at temperatures as low as minus 60 degrees Celsius at the Crystal City training site in Resolute Bay, Nunavut. 2015–18, Pigment print, Image courtesy of the artist and Stephen Bulger Gallery, © Louie Palu Louie Palu’s work was supported by funding from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, National Geographic Magazine and Pulitzer Center.

Louie Palu’s documentary project provided a window into the evolving militarization of the North American Arctic, documenting the vestigial legacies of the Cold War and the increased military presence in the North today. The changes in the region are exacerbated by the many unknowns the Arctic faces, among them the warming of the planet and the increasing global traffic in the region. Over several years—from 2015 to 2018—what began for Palu as a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship evolved into an assignment for National Geographic magazine, as he deepened his engagement with his subject. Taken as a whole, the series examined the growing geopolitical tensions and changing life around Inuit communities in one of the planet’s most extreme and challenging places. This exhibition was organized and circulated by the McMichael Canadian Art Collection.

Exploring Land and Ideas October 22 – November 22, 2020

Takao Tanabe, N.W.T. 1/97: Beaulieu River, 1997

Jack Shadbolt and Takao Tanabe have played crucial roles as both artists and teachers in developing their bold and innovative styles. They are among a core group of distinguished B.C. artists who exhibited widely since the 1950s. Drawn from the Audain Art Museum’s Permanent Collection of Tanabe’s paintings, accompanied by a private donation of Jack Shadbolt’s lithograph prints for the Museum’s 2021 Illuminate Gala & Auction, works by these artists demonstrated the development of unique aesthetic styles that depict visions of physicality and imagination.

Reece Terris: Like a Bridge September 9 to November 28, 2021

Reece Terris (1968 – ), Bridge (Backyard View), 2006, archival pigment print, edition 1 of 3, Audain Art Museum Collection, Gift of the Artist, 2021.005

In the summer of 2006, Reece Terris started constructing a wooden bridge to link his home to the house next door on McSpadden Avenue in East Vancouver. By the early fall, the framed arch sculpture made of 2” x 4” lumber measuring 37’ long and 36’ high was completed. This installation connected Terris’s upper balcony with his neighbour’s deck on the second floor. The resulting structure was beautiful in form, while fully functional with rope handrails. The Reece Terris: Like a Bridge micro exhibition featured a scale model of the Bridge Reece constructed, alongs with four large photographs showing the installation from various angles.

COLLECTION In the 2020-2021 fiscal year, the AAM acquired eighteen works of art for the Permanent Collection. One of the most significant additions was a monumental outdoor sculpture, a collaboration by Haida artist James Hart (7idansuu), Squamish (Skwxwú7mesh) artist Xwlacktun, and Lil’wat (Lil’wat7úl) artist Levi Nelson (Svpyan). The Three Watchmen, a cast bronze sculpture with red ochre patina by Hart sits atop The Great Flood (Ti A7xa7 St’ak’), a waterjet carved aluminum band, around a concrete base, created by Xwalacktun and Nelson. Funded by the Audain Foundation, this two-part monumental work of art now stands high outside of the Museum along Blackcomb Way, commanding a strong presence as a new landmark in Whistler. Another major milestone in the development of the Museum’s Permanent Collection was the establishment of the Audain Art Acquisition Fund. In November 2020, the Audain Foundation generously established this endowment as part of the Audain Art Museum Foundation to support new acquisitions. The purpose of this fund is to create a dedicated financial reserve for the AAM to strategically collect and enhance its holding of historical and contemporary art of British Columbia. The first purchase of art financed by the new funding was a large-scale painting They are midway between the sun and the moon by Vancouver-based emerging contemporary artist Russna Kaur. This painting was unveiled at the AAM’s Founders Autumn Social in Vancouver to celebrate the launch of its future collection expansion. Additionally, the Museum acquired seven works donated by Michael Audain and Yoshiko Karasawa, three works purchased with funds from the Audain Foundation, three works donated by artist Reece Terris, a major photographic print donated by artist Andrew Dadson, and a painting by Peter Aspell donated by the Aceman family. The Museum is committed to enhancing its outstanding collection of national and international importance by remaining selective and focusing on the quality art that supports its mission.

PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT Whistler Wine Walks Participants enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and regional wines every Friday night in October 2020, while exploring an eclectic artistic mix of regional, national and international artists, as well as interactive art experiences. Each week, public and private cultural venues throughout Whistler offered a unique sampling of Whistler’s arts and culture sector. Whistler Wine Walks is a presentation in partnership with Tourism Whistler and 2020 marked the third annual production of the experience.

Alta + Audain: FIne Dining Art Experience Two of Whistler’s top establishments teamed up for a second year to offer an incredibly popular curated outdoor dining experience. A central focus of both the Audain Art Museum and Alta Bistro is showcasing the excellence of British Columbia through visual and culinary arts respectively. The Alta + Audain: Fine Dining Art Experience offered visitors an intimate guided sampler tour of the Museum followed by an open-air four course dinner beneath the stunning architecture of the 56,000 square foot building designed by Vancouver-based firm Patkau Architects. The menu was centered on seasonal ingredients and themes to create a unique experience catered to tastes of British Columbia. In addition to the contemporary cuisine and exceptional art experience, the Alta + Audain series included the beautiful juxtaposition of the iconic form and luster of a vintage Airstream trailer, retrofitted with a complete kitchen, set against the rectilinear lines of the Museum’s award-winning postmodern design. This Friday evening offering took place throughout the summer with limited capacity for each seating in consideration of physical distancing and COVID-19 safety protocols.

The Annual Illuminate Gala & Auction pivoted to a virtual fundraising event, including musical performances by Jaycelyn Brown of Said the Whale.

ILLUMINATE GALA & AUCTION: VIRTUAL EDITION Due to COVID-19, the decision to proceed virtually with the Illuminate Gala & Auction was made in January of 2021. In just a few months, the Gala Committee, along with Museum Staff, developed a unique virtual engagement concept involving an exceptional at-home reception experience catered by The Lazy Gourmet with the support of Mission Hill Family Estate winery. This concept was centered upon avoiding in-person gatherings due to the risks associated with planning for an in-person event that could be cancelled. Elevating the art of British Columbia by including visual artists, dance performers and musicians in the programming was integral to developing an attention-grabbing event concept, along with the exciting Live Auction. Over 375 attendees registered to attend the event, with over $650,000 raised for the Audain Art Museum, the highest grossing fundraising Gala in the Museum’s five-year history.

ANNUAL GIVING CAMPAIGN The Audain Art Museum launched its first Annual Giving Campaign in November of 2020. The online initiative reached Museum supporters, donors and members and was additionally linked on the AAM’s website. Donations were collected through Canada Helps and the Museum was able to raise over $18,000. On behalf of the Audain Art Museum we thank everyone for their ongoing support.

FOUNDERS AUTUMN SOCIAL On September 22, 2021, the Audain Art Museum hosted its first Founders Autumn Social. Founders were invited to an exclusive reception in which a newly acquired piece by Vancouver-based artist, Russna Kaur, was unveiled. The evening event was held at 272 East 1st Avenue in Vancouver and featured remarks by Russna Kaur, Michael Audain, Dr. Curtis Collins, and Gail & Stephen A. Jarislowsky Curator Kiriko Watanabe. The Lazy Gourmet curated a menu of passed canapes and wine, which allowed Founders to mingle with each other and the artist. There were over 45 people in attendance, marking this as the most successful Founders event to date. It was an important step in establishing the Museum’s community of Founders, and set the precedent for many future Founder events.
