MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR When Founders Michael Audain and Yoshi Karasawa shared their vision “It is about the art” this message was top of mind for Trustees, Dr. Collins and his team during this very difficult year of COVID 19. From the onset of the pandemic the Trustees and management team together, quickly and creatively addressed the ramifications for this cultural institution. Dr. Collins outlines in his report the steps that were taken.

The Founders’ vision in creating this special space in the forest of the world class resort of Whistler in which the public could view and contemplate the exceptional permanent collection and exhibitions became even more important. When the museum re-opened it did provide a safe and contemplative experience for visitors in a very uncertain environment.

The Trustees are very grateful and complement the management team in the steps they took to immediately ensuring the building and the valuable collection were safe and cared for. The necessary business and workforce adjustments were handled professionally and wherever possible special arrangements were made to ensure that transitions were carefully managed.

Though this has been a difficult time it has prompted new thinking as to how the Museum can engage with stakeholders and take advantage of technology that will enhance experiencing the art for the future. The role of the Board of Trustees in providing oversight and ensuring financial sustainability became even more important. The Board and various committees maintained a forward focused approach while ensuring all stakeholder interests were protected.

Successfully navigating these troubled and uncertain waters would not have been possible without the exceptional teamwork, dedication and creative thinking by staff under Dr. Collins’ leadership. The support provided by our Founders, Trustees, members, volunteers, Audain Art Museum Foundation, Audain Foundation, corporate sponsors and many supporters was critical to a successful outcome this year and gratefully appreciated.

It has been an honour to follow the footsteps of our esteemed past Chair, Jim Moodie. I am also honoured to have the support of a diversified and talented Board of Trustees. I am confident that The Audain Art Museum is well prepared and supported to successfully fulfill its important role in appreciating and celebrating the visual arts of British Columbia.

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR & CHIEF CURATOR The past year was exceptional for the Audain Art Museum (AAM), and it began with the launch of the Emily Carr: Fresh Seeing – French Modernism and the West Coast. This in-house produced exhibition and accompanying publication represent a milestone in the Museum’s five-year history, as co-curators Kiriko Watanabe and Kathryn Bridge orchestrated a brilliant perspective on the impact of Carr’s two year sojourn in France.

In February 2020, the AAM hosted The Extended Moment: Fifty Years of Collecting Photographs at the National Gallery of Canada, a unique holding that offered an international history of such a critical artistic medium. The NGC’s new Director & CEO, Sasha Suda, visited Whistler to participate in the opening festivities and provided a wonderful public tour of the exhibition.

The onset of COVID 19 resulted in the AAM’s closure from March 18 to June 26, and this ongoing pandemic will be the defining circumstance of our times. In the spring, the Museum was faced with the dilemma of how to reduce its operations due to a total loss of visitorship, as well as severely diminished fundraising opportunities. The resulting staff terminations, cancelled exhibitions, and shuttering of engagement activities were painful moments. In an effort to remain relevant, the Museum quickly pivoted to on-line platforms for the dissemination of cultural content with Flashlight Security Tours of the Permanent Collection on Instagram and the Tuesday Night Talks series with contemporary artists live on Zoom.

Through the summer and fall the Museum continued to re-imagine itself, which is a testament to the hard working staff here alongside the board’s expert guidance. New initiatives including: Alta + Audain: Fine Dining Art Experience, Audain Extended private tours, and an enhanced on-line Shop are indicative of a positive future. The Permanent Collection galleries were updated as the AAM’s incredible holding of BC art continues to grow. Touring exhibitions featuring the work of Joseph Tisiga and Emily Carr respectively opened at the Musée d’art de Joliette and Royal BC Museum, underlining this institution’s increasing national reach.

The year ahead will undoubtedly present more challenges, however I am confident that the Audain Art Museum can remain resilient, as well as endlessly resourceful in fulfilling its vision to be a transformative place for the appreciation of art.

Emily Carr: Fresh Seeing – French Modernism and the West Coast September 21, 2019 – January 20, 2020

A bold undertaking by the AAM uncovered new information about dramatic changes in Emily Carr’s approach to painting over the course of three critical years: 1910 to 1912. Emily Carr: Fresh Seeing – French Modernism and the West Coast investigated Carr’s momentous journey to France (1910-1911) that broke the bonds of her conservative art training.

Drawn from national and international public, private and corporate collections, this exhibition provided a rare opportunity for AAM visitors to view over 50 paintings, watercolours, and drawings by Carr, along with a selection of works by Carr’s instructors that directly influenced her artistic development. These included English painter Henry William Phelan Gibb, Scottish painter John Duncan Fergusson and New Zealand watercolourist Frances Hodgkins. Co-Curated by Kiriko Watanabe, the AAM’s Gail & Stephen A. Jarislowsky Curator and Dr. Kathryn Bridge, the exhibition will travel to the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Fredericton, N.B. February 29 – May 31, 2020 (*closed early on March 15, 2020 due to the pandemic restrictions and facility closure).

Emily Carr: Fresh Seeing was presented by RBC with the support of major sponsors Heffel Fine Art Auction House and Tom and Teresa Gautreau, as well as financial assistance from the Government of Canada through the Museum Assistance Program. PACART is the exclusive transportation provider of this exhibition. Hotel Partner: Fairmont Chateau Whistler.

The Beaverbrook Art Gallery received additional support from the Pilot Fund for Gender Equality to be able to host this exhibition, a collaboration between Community Foundations of Canada and the Equality Fund, with support from the Government of Canada.

The Extended Moment: Fifty Years of Collecting Photographs at the National Gallery of Canada February 8 – October 18, 2020

Exhibition opening of The Extended Moment with Sasha Suda and Dr. Curtis Collins

The Extended Moment: Fifty Years of Collecting Photographs provided a rare opportunity for visitors to witness the international arc of photography from the 19th century to present times. This compelling exhibition overview of the medium’s social, economic, scientific and cultural impact on the world includes European daguerreotype portraits, figurative azo dye prints from Asia, and experimental digital imagery by leading American and Canadian artists.

The Extended Moment came to the AAM courtesy of the Scotiabank Photography Program at the National Gallery of Canada. This exhibition was funded in part by the Resort Municipality of Whistler, through the Province of British Columbia’s Municipal and Regional District Tax, along with hotel partner, The Westin Resort & Spa, Whistler. The exhibition was also part of the 2020 Capture Photography Festival selected exhibition program.

Robert Davidson: Eagle Transformation Mask January 21 to February 5, 2020

Eagle Transformation Mask accompanied by Storage Mask and three prototype carvings by Robert Davidson were on display to provide viewers with a unique perspective on the artist’s creative process. Together, these works demonstrate how Davidson’s ideas move from drawing an image on a red cedar block, followed by a rough carving, to a semi-finished carved and painted model before producing the completed work.

The Audain Art Museum’s permanent holding features five pieces by this Haida artist of international note. Robert Davidson’s work can be found in collections across Canada and around the world including of the National Gallery of Canada, Canadian Museum of History and Vancouver Art Gallery.

COLLECTION In the 2019-2020 fiscal year, the Museum added sixteen works to its Permanent Collection. These include promised gifts from a few years ago, such as Robert Davidson’s Eagle Transformation Mask from Patricia and Bruce McLaughlin and Fredrick Varley’s Untitled (Portrait of Vera) from Rose-Marie and John Goodwin, both of which are now donated to the AAM as a result of successful certification applications to the Canadian Cultural Property Review Board.

The Museum also acquired Souvenir of King’s Visit Luncheon

by Jack Shadbolt and Museum Ship, Penticton, BC by E. J. Hughes, both of which were donated by G.I.H. Properties Ltd. Vikky Alexander’s Orange Ceiling was donated by Gregg Baker, and five works were donated by Michael Audain and Yoshiko Karasawa, including Hogan’s Alley by Stan Douglas, Pachino 43 by Gordon Smith and Frog Bowl by Beau Dick.

Funds from Rob Bruno supported an acquisition of Nations in an Urban Landscape by Levi Nelson, who is an emerging artist from the Lil’wat Nation. Michael Audain and Yoshiko Karasawa generously funded the Museum to purchase a historical Tsimshian Mask. In addition, funds from the Audain Foundation allowed the Museum to purchase four works, including Street Alert Bay by Emily Carr and Old Woman with Labret by Freda Diesing.

The acquisition of historically, culturally, and spiritually significant works, as well as a wide range of mid-century and contemporary works, benefit the Museum greatly to highlight the best examples of this province’s rich artistic heritage.

PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT Public Programming & Community Engagement The Museum’s Special Exhibitions and Permanent Collection provide an outstanding opportunity for guests to expand their understanding and appreciation of historical and contemporary art. Guided and non-guided learning experiences are created by the Museum’s team in collaboration with artists, educators and museum professionals with a goal to inspire conversation, engagement and expand visual literacy.

Public & Private Docent-led Tours The daily Walk & Talk Tours ran until mid-March 2020 and have been consistently praised for the variety and extent of information shared about the Permanent Collection and Special Exhibitions. Groups including friends, families, seniors groups and both local and international travel groups booked Private Tours of the Museum.

Family Studio Sunday Generously supported by Blueshore Financial, the Family Studio had consistent participation up to the Museum temporary closure in March 2020 from both Whistler visitors and locals. Located in the Schmidtke Studio, this program encouraged exploration and experimentation with a variety of different art making techniques that have taken their inspiration for the Museum’s Permanent Collection or Special Exhibitions.

SPECIAL EVENTS & PROGRAMMING Art After Dark In order to activate the Museum’s evening operating hours, a special program was developed for Friday nights. A variety of art making themes, based on visitor feedback, were the basis for Art After Dark.

Emily Carr: Fresh Seeing – French Modernism and the West Coast Multiple initiatives were executed to enhance Emily Carr: Fresh Seeing through tours, performances, films and parties. On September 21 and 22, 2019 Kiriko Watanabe, AAM’s Gail & Stephen A. Jarislowsky Curator and Kathryn Bridge, Royal BC Museum Curator Emerita, guided over 100 people through the exhibition over the opening weekend. In Her Own Words, a theatrical reading and performance of Emily Carr writings by local actors Dea Lloyd and Tara Bowland was presented in the Upper Gallery on October 5, 2019. The Gruff Goat Dance Theatre, Pemberton, performed It stirred me all up, a dance and movement inspired by Emily Carr, choreographed by Trish Belsham on November 9, 2020 and the Museum celebrated Emily Carr’s birthday on December 13, 2019 with a special cake-cutting ceremony.

Whistler Wine Walks The Museum continued partnering with Tourism Whistler for a second year in Whistler Wine Walks. Participants sampled hors d’oeuvres and BC wines every Friday night in October, while exploring the eclectic artistic mix featuring regional, national and international artists, as well as interactive art experiences.

Abstract: Warhol Factory Party The Museum presented a unique and unforgettable evening on November 16, 2019, as part of Whistler’s Cornucopia Festival. For this signature event, the AAM was transformed into an industrial space inspired by the iconic Warhol Factory.

Refresh Market December 6 and 7, 2020 was the inaugural holiday pop-up market at the Museum. The market lineup featured a curated selection of handmade and locally designed clothing, jewelry, ceramics, art, vintage, artisan food, skincare and homewares from neighborhood favorites, as well as up-and-coming artists and brands.

Perfectly Paired On February 28, 2020, Whistler’s award-winning celebrity server Rich Budd, of Hy’s Steakhouse, presented a unique spin on the art of wine pairing. The evening included wine tasting with commentary by Rich and the AAM’s Director & Chief Curator Dr. Curtis Collins. Guests were invited to explore the Museum following the tasting experience.

AAM EMERGING ARTISTS PROJECT PRESENTED BY RBC The AAM is deeply committed to fostering the growth of a thriving arts community and the support of Canada’s emerging artistic talent. Museums are a key element in the advancement of a successful artistic career, yet there is a lack of opportunity to directly connect emerging artists with museum professionals. In conjunction with Emily Carr: Fresh Seeing - French Modernism and the West Coast, the AAM has developed the Emerging Artists Project with the support of RBC. The program provided professional development opportunities for ten emerging artists through a series of dialogues with a group of museum professionals and art collectors on October 26 and November 23, 2019.

Eligibility • devotes 24 hours a week or more to the pursuit of their art • has not yet had a major public exhibition • has not yet emerged/been showcased beyond their primary country of residence • 18 – 35 years of age upon application

UNPRECEDENTED TIMES In the wake of the COVID19 pandemic the Museum closed its doors from March 16 – July 26, 2020. As with many individuals, organizations and institutions the AAM was faced with new challenges to overcome. Work processes, timelines and the entire team adjusted to the new circumstances. The Museum excelled in the face of these new challenges, and a focus was placed in the digital realm to allow for the public to stay connected and be able to explore the Museum’s Permanent Collection and Special Exhibitions.

TNT Season 1, Episode 3: Xwalacktun

Director’s Flashlight Security Tours The Director’s Flashlight tours were an Instagram success and a new engagement initiative that focused on the Permanent Collection and Special Exhibitions during the Museum’s closure.

Tuesday Night Talks (TNT): Season 1 May 5 – June 30, 2020 TNT offered a unique opportunity for over 2,500 online participants to simultaneously enter the Museum and the artist’s studio or home via Zoom during the evening, while learning about key works in the AAM’s Permanent Collection directly from their respective makers. Artists featured on TNT Season 1 included Ian Wallace, Paul Wong, Xwalacktun, Liz Magor, Joseph Tisiga, Landon Mackenzie, Kim Dorland and Shawn Hunt. The final episode was simultaneously broadcast live from the Audain Art Museum in Whistler and the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa with Sasha Suda and Kitty Scott.

Alta + Audain: FIne Dining Art Experience The Alta + Audain: Fine Dining Art Experience offered visitors an intimate guided tour of the Museum followed by an open-air dinner beneath the stunning architecture of the 56,000 square foot building designed by Vancouver-based firm Patkau Architects. A new menu was offered each evening, centering on seasonal ingredients and themes to create a unique experience week over week. In addition to the contemporary cuisine and exceptional art experience, the Alta + Audain series included the beautiful juxtaposition of the iconic form and luster of a vintage Airstream trailer, retrofitted with a complete kitchen, set against the rectilinear lines of the Museum’s award-winning postmodern design. More than 230 guests over eight Friday evenings from late July to early September received an intimate guided tour of the AAM by the Museum’s new Culture Hosts.

Illuminate Gala & Auction The 2020 Illuminate Gala & Auction at Fairmont Chateau Whistler was cancelled due to the pandemic.The Museum would like to thank RBC, Burgundy Asset Management and table and ticket holders who converted their Gala contributions into donations, in light of the cancellation. The 2021 Gala and Auction will be held virtually on Saturday, April 24 hosted by celebrated media personalities Gloria Macarenko and Fred Lee.

VOLUNTEERS & COMMUNITY The ongoing commitment and enthusiasm of volunteers is key to the Museum’s growth and has enabled the consistent delivery of a range of programs, events and initiatives. The Audain Art Museum extends its appreciation to all the volunteers and Docents who have lent their support to the Museum.

The visitor experience is enhanced through the Docent’s engaging and informative tours of both the Permanent Collection and Special Exhibitions. The Docents have a strong interest in gaining knowledge and sharing it with the Museum’s visitors.

The Museum is committed to providing ongoing interactive training opportunities, skill development, social engagements and recognition to all volunteers and Docents.
