John Pye Auctions | Auctioneer Appointed to Help Find Buyer for Moorcroft Pottery
National auction house, John Pye & Sons Ltd, has been appointed by the Directors W.Moorcroft Ltd and Insolvency Practitioners Moore Recovery to explore the options for the sale of the world-famous fine art pottery firm.
John Pye Auctions has this week been appointed by the Directors and Insolvency Practitioners, Moore Recovery, to manage the sale of assets from W. Moorcroft Ltd.
A manufacturer and retailer of fine art pottery, W. Moorcroft Ltd, based in Stoke-on-Trent, was founded in 1913. It ceased trading on 7th April 2025 and appointed Moore Recovery to assist it’s Directors in placing the business into voluntary liquidation.
The firm, which is known worldwide for its handmade, fine art pottery pieces has a prestigious client list including Liberty of London, Harrods, Tiffany & Co in New York and Shreve and Co in San Francisco. It also inspired Queen Mary’s lifelong support of the art pottery and in 1928 Moorcroft was awarded the title ‘Potters to HM the Queen’, which changed to ‘Potters to The Late Queen’ in 1953 and was used until 1978.
Throughout her lifetime, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II also regularly took new Moorcroft designs into the Royal Collection. Other high-profile customers have includedEstée Lauder President, Leonard A Lauder, former US Presidents and British Prime Ministers, plus famous actors and singers.
With a legacy and heritage strongly rooted in the Staffordshire potteries, Moore Recovery and John Pye Auctions are currently exploring all opportunities to find a buyer for Moorcroft to restart production and operations before it becomes necessaryto dispose of the Company assets at auction.
Gary Harper, Machinery & Business Asset Valuer at John Pye said: “All assets of the Moorcroft business are available to potential buyers including both tangible and intangible to include freehold and leasehold premises, office furniture, IT and business machines, plant
machinery and equipment, stocks to include retail trial and master pottery art pieces, the company name, domain name and website, trademarks, social media accounts, customer and supplier details, as well as historic records.
“This is a rare opportunity to secure a unique manufacturing and retail business with a varied customer base that is well known and loved by collectors worldwide.”
John Pye, a long-standing partner of Moore Recovery, has significant experience in valuing and selling different asset types. Including consumer goods, plant and machinery and IP and will provide support throughout the process.
Gary Harper concludes: “We hope again to be able to achieve a sale of the business assets as a collection to a new owner operator who will reemploy former staff members, as achieved earlier this year in the case of the tableware business, Royal Stafford Pottery also based in the Potteries.”
The deadline for indicative offers has been set for 5.00 pm on Wednesday the 4th of June 2025, all interested parties should contact gary.harper@johnpye.com or visit www.johnpye.co.uk.
