Members of the MSAA
I want to extend my gratitude to the hard-working, diligent group of individuals who are instrumental in the growth of this committee, preserving traditions, and creating new ones I am excited to begin my term as president and could not be more grateful to all who believed in me to successfully take on this honored position
We have an excellent Board of Directors this year, including the newly elected Vice President, Dave McLaughlin, and the newly elected board members: Mitchell Siemers, Lake Boehm, and Lance Quam Everyone brings a unique contribution that will enhance our abilities and strengthen this board
I am privileged to work with the "former" EVP, Frank Imholte, who has done a fantastic job all these years. It saddens me to see "former" in front of his name because of this transition. Frank is the man with all the answers, and I am confident he will ensure a smooth transition as we welcome the new EVP, Cali Crissup Cali, hired in November, was present at the 2024 MSAA Auctioneer Conference and Show, and I hope many of you had the opportunity to meet her and witness the significant contributions she will bring to our association
Since my presidency began, several people have contacted me regarding changes they wish to see within the association Thank you for your input and requests I have taken note of these items, and with the board's leadership, we will endeavor to implement some of them
Plans for the summer picnic are underway We will gather at the Little Log House/Pioneer Village in Hastings, Minnesota, on Sunday, August 11, 2024.
I believe the MSAA is well-positioned. Change is inevitable in this industry, and while it can be challenging, it also unites us as a group and stimulates our minds, keeping us abreast of global developments
Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me

DAVE MCLAUGHLIN
Greetings to the MSAA,
First and foremost, I would like to take a moment to thank the members of the MSAA for their support of my candidacy for the position of Vice President at the Conference and Show in January I am truly humbled by your vote of confidence and excited to once again have the privilege of serving on the MSAA Board of Directors If you ever have a concern, comment, complaint, or an idea that you would like to share, I am just a phone call or email away, and I promise I’ll do my best to address the issues
If you were at the Conference and Show in January, you may recall that I shared with you that I had considered running for Vice President for quite a long time It had been 22 years since I had served as a director, but I had always been waiting for “The Right Time ” Now, I have always been somewhat of a procrastinator; in fact, I often joke about it in my personal life, but I had waited 22 years for the time to be right to once again step up and serve this amazing organization When I was considering whether to run for Vice President this year, I came to the conclusion that there will never be a “right time”, but perhaps it is “just time” to do it
In the days following the Conference and Show, I did some personal reflection and asked myself what else I wanted to do but have been waiting for the “Right Time” After 38 years in the auction business, some would consider that I may be in the last quarter or final stages of my auction career, but are there things that I can do to make my remaining years in the business the best they can be?
The first thing that came to mind was I’ve always wanted to attend the NAA’s Certified Auction Institute (CAI) Again, I’ve considered doing that for a very long time However, the cost and commitment of time made it hard to say now is the “Right Time ” So, after a few days of thinking it over (there’s that procrastination thing again), I decided to enroll in this year’s CAI course in Bloomington, Indiana I am excited to finally be attending CAI and am looking forward to exploring new ideas and meeting new people from within the auction industry
Many of you remember our friend and past MSAA President, Rick Berens Prior to Rick’s death, he produced a video in which he asked people, “What are you waiting for? Just do It!” As 2024 moves forward, I would like to challenge all of you to take some time and reflect on those things you’ve always wanted to do, either professionally or in your personal life but have been waiting for “The Right Time” to do, and change it to “Just Time” to do it I hope you all will find at least one thing you’ve always wanted to do this year and just do it! You’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain!
I would also encourage everyone to plan to attend both the summer picnic and bi-annual meeting and next year’s Conference and Show in Red Wing, MN President Kevin and your Executive Board are already busy planning both events, and I’m sure you’ll find them educational, entertaining, and fun!
May you all have a great 2024!
Best regards,
Dave McLaughlin
MSAA Vice President

A simple Google search of the title of this article will no doubt provide you with hours of entertainment Mostly, you will see pictures of tattoos on people that are either a horrible concept, badly drawn, misspelled, or a combination of all three. Usually, once someone points out the mistake, the irony of regret sinks in.
Many people carry the motto, “Live life with no regrets ” This is the challenge I would like to present to you Have you put off a goal time and again, only to revisit it every year on January 1st and forget it by January 31st? Perhaps instead of waiting to make a New Year’s Resolution, you could make it a Mid Year’s Resolution and start today Think of your priorities in life Do your priorities truly align to your values, or are you compromising your values to prioritize someone else’s wants?
If you are unsure what things in life might be regrettable, ask someone more advanced in years than yourself. I recommend a grandparent or someone along those lines. If you are no longer able to speak with your grandparent, I’m certain there are some “Golden” aged members of our association that would love a phone call asking for some life advice Simply ask them, “Do you have any regrets in life, or is there anything you would do differently if you had the opportunity?” Their answers may surprise you
Another piece of advice that I might offer in the hopes of helping you to avoid regrets: Invest in relationships Invest your time in people, not things If I may, I’d like to share a regret that I have I remember a conversation I had with my grandpa a few years before he passed I was proud that I was earning a good wage at my job and able to work 50+ hours each week. I was raking in the dough! He reminded me that the important things in my life are at home and not at work. He warned that the time I have with my children is most valuable while they are little and under my roof He was right I was very ashamed of myself the day I received a phone call from my mom that grandpa had passed Ashamed because it was a Saturday, and instead of spending time with my family, I was working that “Overtime” for the almighty dollar
There are many sources to help you live your life to the fullest with, “No Regerts ” I think it is important to be intentional with your decisions Make a life plan Assess your values in life, and prioritize your actions to honor those values and reach your goals. There is little shame in making a mistake, provided a lesson is learned, and that knowledge applied moving forward.

As a member of the team managing the live stream for the Minnesota State Auctioneers Association at our Conference and Show, I've had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the incredible growth and impact our live stream has had It's been truly exciting to see how we're expanding our association's reach through live streaming our key events: The Auctioneer's Championship, Junior & Amateur Showcase, and President’s Banquet
Our journey into live streaming has been a wonderful experience This past year, we've seen engagement numbers that have exceeded our expectations. The 2024 Auctioneer's Championship drew an impressive 7,700 views, reached over 12,000 people, and generated 290 comments. It's been incredible to see so many people tuning in to watch our talented auctioneers showcase their skills
But it's not just our main event that's gaining traction The 2024 Junior and Amateur Showcase attracted 2,200 views with a reach of 4,150, while even our 2024 President's Banquet saw significant engagement with 593 views and a reach of 1,093 These numbers aren't just statistics to us; they represent real people engaging with our content and gaining insight into the world of auctioneering
What's particularly gratifying is the level of engagement we've seen during our live broadcasts Viewers aren't just passively watching; they're actively participating, asking questions, and showing genuine interest in our profession It's this interaction that makes the live streaming experience so valuable for both our association and our audience
I want to take a moment to express my thanks to my co-host, John Schultz, during the Auctioneer's Championship Your expertise, energy, and professionalism added immeasurably to the quality of our broadcast Your contributions helped make the event not just informative, but truly entertaining for our viewers I’d also like to thank Jim and Dave McLaughlin, who lend their expertise and support to the audio aspect of the live stream, as well as to the conference and show overall Your behind-thescenes work is crucial in ensuring our events run smoothly and sound great, both in-person and online
As we look to the future, I'm filled with excitement about the potential for our live streaming initiatives We're not just showcasing auctions; we're growing our association, attracting new members, and providing valuable exposure for our participating auctioneers We're creating educational opportunities for aspiring professionals and fostering a sense of community across Minnesota
We're already brainstorming ways to enhance the live streaming experience Whether it's improving our production quality, adding interactive features for viewers, or including additional content, we're committed to making each broadcast better than the last
It's been a joy to be part of growing our association through live streaming and to show off the wonderful talent of our members As we continue to refine and expand our offerings, I'm confident that we'll be able to showcase even more of the incredible auction talent we have here in Minnesota

MSAA Family and Friends,
I hope this article finds you well and that you are enjoying the summer to its fullest For many of us in the auction industry, that means a very hectic schedule I know firsthand just how busy that can be Just remember to take time to take care of yourself and take time for family You can never get time spent working back and trade it for time with family.
As I reflect on some of the changes I have seen that could affect the auction industry, I just wanted to offer my viewpoint on a few things I feel as though I have a bit of a unique perspective on the farm economy Being an auctioneer full time and running a farming operation that also tends to take a “full time job” kind of commitment, it can be hard to balance it all
The generational change I see coming to the farming market is huge I have touched on this in the past, but the number of older farms is still much larger than the younger generation coming to take over That leads me to believe that there are still plenty of opportunities for auctioneers to find their place in that transition.
That being said, the younger generation looking to purchase those assets that us auctioneers are offering at auction are staring down some tough-looking financial realities As interest continues to climb and commodity prices continue to go down, the next few years look like some tougher times could be upon the ag market The next generation's mindset is starting to shift from growth to sustainment I feel that is especially true in the southern part of the state The recent rainfall in late June has devastated an already stressed crop The nation's commodity outlook is positive as of yet in terms of crop condition, but closer to home, on a more local level, things are much different The “good to excellent” ratings across the county are keeping prices low, just the opposite of what farmers need in the southern Minnesota and Northern Iowa areas
I summarize all of that to the point of appropriately managing sellers' expectations when discussing ag equipment at auction. What is “appropriately managing sellers’ expectations”? Your guess is as good as mine. I would say the best thing any of you can do is say a prayer and have faith.
I would like to bring your attention to a few associations The state of Minnesota always seems to try to make changes they see as “positive” for a small group greatly affected by a problem They all too often don’t think about the majority or “out-of-state” Minnesotans We have gathered a great group of people to update the association at the Summer Picnic I invite each and every one of you out to that There will be some great information offered that will certainly affect almost everyone in the industry in the state of Minnesota and beyond It is also never too early to start thinking about making a campaign for Board of Directors The last several years I have had the opportunity to serve as a board member have taught me so much I highly recommend considering a spot as a director of the Minnesota State Auctioneers Association.
RAY CARUSO
I have always wondered what makes a sale an estate sale
2023 Minnesota Statutes
325E.70 ESTATE SALE CONDUCTORS; BONDING REQUIRED.
Subdivision 1 Definitions
(a) For purposes of this section, the terms defined in this subdivision have the meanings given
(b) "Estate sale" means a sale, to which the public is invited, of physical assets suited primarily for household or personal use, owned by one or more individuals or families, or by the estate of a deceased individual Estate sale does not include an auction
(c) "Estate sale conductor" means an individual, including an auctioneer, who conducts or contracts to conduct an estate sale in the expectation or hope of receiving financial compensation for services rendered.
(d) "Conducts an estate sale" means entering into and performing an agreement with the owner or owners of property to be sold at an estate sale In this agreement, the estate sale conductor undertakes responsibility for conducting the sale, including functions such as advice, advertising, pricing, display of merchandise, selling, receiving and accounting for payments, and record-keeping
Subd 2 Estate sale conductor bonding requirement
(a) Before entering into an agreement to conduct an estate sale, the estate sale conductor shall give or previously have filed a corporate surety bond with the county in which the estate sale will take place or in which the estate sale conductor resides, in a penal sum of at least $20,000 The bond is conditioned upon the estate sale conductor paying all sums required by law or contract and conforming in all respects to the contract and relevant laws governing estate sales. The county treasurer shall endorse and file the bond in the county treasurer's office upon approval.
(b) Paragraph (a) applies to an auctioneer who conducts an estate sale on the same basis as any other estate sale conductor, irrespective of whether the auctioneer has also posted the bond required under section 330 02 for sales conducted as an auctioneer
Section 330 02 BOND
Every auctioneer, before making sales, shall furnish a corporate surety bond to the county in a penal sum fixed by the treasurer, ranging from not less than $1,000 to not more than $3,000 The bond must have sureties approved by the treasurer and be conditioned upon the auctioneer paying all sums required by law and conforming to all regulations concerning auctioneers The treasurer shall endorse and file the bond in the treasurer's office upon approval
That is about as clear as mud. On one hand, an estate sale does not include an auction; on the other hand, an auctioneer can be an estate sale conductor.
It’s amazing what you learn while trying to write an article. My intention in this article is to discuss gun sales at 'estate auctions'. The $20,000 bond requirement is news to me. I have tried but been unsuccessful in finding a legal definition for an 'estate auction' State websites refer to the term 'estate sale' A website called trustandwill com (I am not advocating obtaining legal advice from a website) refers to both terms For argument's sake, I will assume that there is such a thing as an estate auction Wikipedia (considering the source) defines an estate sale or estate liquidation as a sale or auction to dispose of a substantial portion of the materials owned by a person who is recently deceased or who must dispose of their personal property to facilitate a move I have even seen definitions stating that an estate sale can involve one or more selling parties For clarity, I will refer to it as a personal property auction if the seller(s) are alive, and I will call it an estate auction if the sale pertains to a deceased person’s estate
RAY CARUSO
Why all of this to-do about the definition? It pertains to when non-FFL auctioneers can sell firearms at auction We often hear about, and rely on, the 'estate sale exemption' So, when can a non-FFL auctioneer sell guns at auction? The answer? NEVER! The auctioneer is NOT the one selling the firearm The auctioneer is creating a method to bring a potential buyer to the executor or the personal representative of the estate
Since we are discussing sales, let's assume that no beneficiaries of the estate want the firearm ATF regulation §479 90a states:
(b) If there are no beneficiaries of the estate or the beneficiaries do not wish to possess the registered firearm, the executor will dispose of the property outside the estate (i e , to a nonbeneficiary) The executor shall file an ATF Form 4 (5320 4), Application for Tax Paid Transfer and Registration of Firearm, in accordance with § 479.84. The executor, administrator, personal representative, or other authorized person must also provide documentation prescribed in paragraph (c) of this section.
(c) The executor, administrator, personal representative, or other person authorized under State law to dispose of property in an estate shall submit with the transfer application documentation of the person's appointment as executor, administrator, personal representative, or as an authorized person, a copy of the decedent's death certificate, a copy of the will (if any), any other evidence of the person's authority to dispose of property, and any other document relating to, or affecting the disposition of firearms from the estate
If you are conducting auctions for executors, I strongly suggest that you inform them of this requirement The executor or personal representative only has the ability to sell part or all of an estate while the estate is in probate What else does this mean? It means that if you are conducting a personal property auction with firearms, and it is not for an estate in probate, you cannot sell the firearm. By the way, I learned the hard way (via a phone call from the ATF) that having a local gun shop or pawn shop or anyone with an ATF conduct the transfer is NOT a solution to the issue The fact is that a non-FFL auctioneer cannot write a contract to sell guns, as they are not licensed to sell guns Our company uses an affiliate model where we work with many independent auctioneers We used to let them conduct the auction, bring us the firearms, and we would transfer them at our licensed location We were told we could not do that We asked if we could have the client deliver the firearms directly to us; we were told that WE would have to write the contract, receive the firearms from the seller, conduct the auction, and sell the firearms Since the affiliate is not licensed to sell guns, they cannot write a contract to do so They cannot receive, and they cannot transport What an FFL can do is offer a referral fee My company conducts a large number of auctions We have a highly trafficked website, and the ATF and DNR keep a close eye on what we are selling. Much of what I talked about was due to the ATF contacting an affiliate who had an auction underway with a couple of Saturday Night Specials. Since they are not legal to sell in Minnesota, the ATF wanted to speak to the FFL holder. Lucky me.
After a lengthy discussion, I was informed of all the things I was doing wrong concerning gun sales Do you know what a Saturday Night Special is? Any handgun made with a metal that has a melting point of 1000 degrees Fahrenheit or less Very cheaply made, and they were very inexpensive to buy The reason they are illegal is not just because there are many of them and are often obtained for the wrong reasons; the main reason is they can explode in your hand when fired Who knew?
PJ FANBERG
Buckle up, folks It’s about to get bumpy Nobody can predict the future, but the ingredients are present to make the end of 2024 and the start of 2025 'interesting' The auction industry, known for its adaptability and resilience, faces a difficult year as economic uncertainties loom Factors such as fluctuating market conditions, geopolitical tensions, and evolving consumer behavior are poised to shape the landscape of auctions in the coming year Oh yeah, let’s not forget that there is an election in November Understanding these dynamics is crucial for auctioneers, buyers, and sellers as they navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead.
Economic instability can significantly impact the auction industry Inflation, interest rate changes, and currency fluctuations affect both the supply and demand for auctioned items When inflation rises, the cost of goods and services increases, potentially leading to higher prices at auctions However, buyers may become more cautious and less ambitious, leading to reduced bidding activity and lower final sale prices
On larger purchases, interest rate changes, often implemented to control inflation, can also influence the auction market Higher interest rates increase borrowing costs, which may deter potential buyers from participating in auctions Conversely, lower interest rates can stimulate spending and encourage more aggressive bidding, benefiting sellers Auction companies must stay attuned to these economic indicators and adjust their strategies accordingly
As equipment prices continue their downward trend, dealers are more reluctant to take in used equipment on trade Often, they end up with a piece of equipment that is on a downward price trajectory, decreasing from the trade-in value they negotiated earlier (an exact opposite environment as we saw at the start of COVID) Couple this with the surplus of new equipment being pumped out from OEMs, and you have a tricky landscape to navigate as the medium between buyers and sellers.
Despite the uncertainties, technological advancements offer a silver lining for the auction industry The rapid shift towards digital platforms, accelerated by the pandemic, has expanded the reach of auctions and increased participation from global bidders Online auctions provide flexibility and convenience, allowing participants to bid from anywhere in the world The larger your audience, the more insulated and immune you can be to market conditions in a particular region For example, Guyana is experiencing a huge oil boom right now and in need of equipment to facilitate their growing economy Helping your sellers’ market to regions like this provides additional bidders and props up what would otherwise be slumping bid prices
When the economy is moving, Auctioneers are busy. We are the avenue by which the free market functions. We are the vital intermediary that helps determine true value and demand. Now is the time to prepare your business for future success Build your teams, build your capabilities, and continue to show why Minnesota is a GREAT auction state!
KAIJA KOKESH
By Kaija Kokesh, MSAA Board of Directors
Costs of college, fuel, services, even a gallon of milk have risen so much in recent years, it becomes increasingly worrisome how to make ends meet, let alone pay college/trade school tuition or continuing education fees My Dad, one of the wisest people I know, always said, “Don’t let school get in the way of learning.” Also true, do not let the cost of personal education get in the way of your pursuit of it. Tuition costs are daunting, to say the least Not surprisingly, many associations, personal parties, and companies offer scholarship money to offset some of the incredible costs of higher education, including the MSAA
The MSAA Auxiliary has given qualified applicants scholarships for many years In addition, Renee Berens, wife of the late Rick Berens, has also made scholarship money available Many of the people who sit among you at MSAA functions either have been recipients themselves or had a family member who was a recipient of one of these scholarships
The MSAA and the MSAA Auxiliary accept applications from deserving relatives of active MSAA or Auxiliary members Scholarships can also be awarded to a person who has worked with an auction company or auctioneer who has been an active member of the MSAA for at least two years. This scholarship is to be used for higher education of the applicant once accepted to a College, University, or Trade School. The Rick Berens Memorial Scholarship is for attending an Auction School or an NAA Accredited AARE course, and the applicant must be a relative of an MSAA or Auxiliary member who has been an active member for three consecutive years
Both scholarships have simple requirements: 1) Completion of an essay, 2) Completion of an official Scholarship Application, 3) a letter of recommendation from a current MSAA/Auxiliary member, and 4) Use funds for either College/Trade School tuition (proof of registration/transcript required) or use toward tuition at an Auction School or AARE course
Even though each applicant may only be awarded a scholarship once, if an applicant is not awarded a scholarship in a given year, they may reapply in subsequent years.
With costs of all goods and services on the rise, why not make use of the giving nature of the MSAA and Auxiliary to assist your own, your relatives, or in those cases, an employee’s desire to enhance their futures by furthering their educations? So many times, that assistance makes such a difference in the recipient’s life, and in turn, they will continue to support such scholarships as a lifetime member of the MSAA for generations to come
Encourage those seeking higher education to apply! Be creative in the essay writing and give the committee an idea of your past, your experience, your dreams, and goals Share the best of yourself with the MSAA and reap the rewards of deserved assistance! It is a fact that you will miss 100% of the shots you don’t take!
LAKE BOEHM
In the age of online auctions, the conversations surrounding customer conflicts have changed greatly from those had while leaning against a hay wagon hashing out complaints with buyers at live auctions. A high percentage of internet buyers bid on and buy items sight unseen, which can cause a litany of issues when it comes to pick-up day Of course, most online auction companies do have an open house day, and it's the buyer’s responsibility to come to the inspection, right? Under most circumstances, yes, but what if the buyer lives hours or states away? Sometimes it’s just not practical to expect our buyers to do so No longer can we rely on our buyers physically inspecting the item before a bid is placed This puts a greater responsibility on us, the auctioneer, to take extra care and detail when it comes to our listings
One of the top complaints we have experienced is that damage or a defect was not pictured in the auction listing, only to be discovered when the buyer arrives to pick up their item
Of course, it was not an intentional omission, but it forced us to take extra steps. We now train our staff to take detailed pictures of any damaged areas that are reasonably noticeable. Using a passenger car, for example, they are instructed to not only picture the interior and exterior, but also photograph any rust areas, the frame, engine bay, all four tires, and the dashboard when the vehicle is running Also, in the case of vehicles, if the yard staff notices that the car has been smoked in or perhaps was at one time inhabited by a pesky rodent who thought it appropriate to use the interior of the vehicle as its own personal toilet, they notate this by adding “Strong Odor Present” to the listing After all, you can’t smell pictures Maybe the vehicle or piece of equipment runs rough; “Inspection Encouraged” is then added These are just a few examples, but the point is this: the more we disclose in our auction listings, the fewer headaches we will be dealing with in the long run
We’ve covered buyers, but what about the sellers? Our fiduciary responsibility is with the seller, and rightfully, they want top dollar for their assets. Sometimes you will encounter those who are not pleased with the fact that you did disclose the issues with the item instead of turning a blind eye After all, it’s an “As Is, Where Is” auction, right? There may be a learning curve to navigate with your clients at first, but they will quickly learn to appreciate that the more we disclose, the more confidence is inspired in the people bidding on their items, therefore oftentimes driving the price even higher than it might have been without the proper disclosures
To further aid in making sure that the item is properly represented, we have trained our staff to inquire "if there is anything good or bad to know about the item.” This opens a conversation that not only helps with disclosing known issues but also allows us to learn more about positive selling points for that particular asset, such as new tires or a replaced transmission.
Furthermore, a ‘duty to disclose known issues’ provision is not a bad idea to have in an auction contract with the seller In this industry, we are fortunate to work with many honest and upstanding clients, but we must protect our business in the case of an exception For instance, we had sold a large wheel loader of which the seller stated there were no known issues
However, we received a call from the buyer the next day after pickup stating that 4th gear was completely gone in the machine. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the machine had been in for service just before arriving at our yard, and the mechanic had noted that the transmission would need to be replaced. Whose responsibility would it have been, if not for the provision in the contract that requires the disclosure of known issues, to replace the transmission? In a court of law, it is very likely that you, the auctioneer, would be footing the bill even though you did not know about the issue We ended up working with the seller to get the buyer’s money back and resold the machine again with the proper disclosures in place for a fair price
Of course, there will still be occasional issues and disgruntled customers, but they will certainly be minimized when proper time and detail is taken to represent the items we sell
The more we hone our skills as auctioneers to present items in a fair, professional, and unbiased manner, the more credibility we will have. In turn, we will enjoy higher prices at auction, fewer headaches, fewer 1-star reviews, more 5-star reviews, and happy buyers and sellers

I want to start my article off by saying the worst thing about being on the board was writing the article, and they said just have AI do it I thought about it for a while and thought, “No, I'm going to do it on my own to get the real me.” Some of you will probably disagree and think I should have had AI write it.
I will give a little background on me for those who don't know me I went to Mason City, Iowa in late 1993 In the spring of 1994, we did a large machinery consignment auction, followed by a 160-acre farm with a nice set of buildings and many nice antique auctions, when they were a big deal We tried to embrace all the new technology We were the first in the area to go computer clerking around '96 or '97, and the first in the area to do online auctions around 2003 All of these ideas and learning came from MSAA, through vendors and other members like Greg Christson That is why, for some of you young and new members who get involved in MSAA, it is a wonderful way to learn and expand your business. You will find that most everyone is willing to help you if you need it. In this business, you have to keep up with new ideas, technology, and trends, and MSAA is a great place to get them The auction business is a wonderful business; it's a fun business and it's here to stay
There is one other thing I'd like to touch on that nobody wants to think about, but it affects many in the auction business: depression There are so many levels of it In some cases, it could just be a funk, which reflects onto customers So, when you're out trying to get an auction and you're not in your best mind, it reflects from you If you're doing an auction and you're grumpy or standoffish, the customer will react; and also, if the customer is grumpy, give them a break because maybe they've had a bad day too. That being said, you also need to know when to stand your ground. There is a saying, “If it gets real bad, take off running into the woods, but don't go off screaming; they will follow ” In these situations, it helps to talk to someone like a spouse, but it has to be someone close to you because nobody wants to hear about your problems You just need to keep it in mind when talking to the public If you or anybody around you is experiencing severe depression, please get help If it's really depression, you need to get help; it's not something to take lightly I've been around people who have had these problems, and it's scary So, if you know someone in this situation, watch them and don't take it for granted
To end this article on a more upbeat note, I'm glad to be part of this family, the MSAA, and I hope I can help by giving back to this organization I hope to see everyone at the biannual meeting or summer picnic

First, I would like to thank the membership for again trusting in my ability to be involved with the MSAA Board of Directors. It has been 24 years since the first time that I was elected to serve I am truly honored and humbled to be able to serve the association again I am looking forward to working diligently in the best interests of the association and its members I am confident that my experiences and dedication will help me to make a positive contribution I am enthusiastic about the MSAA and its mission, and I look forward to helping to grow and develop the association I am eager to start working on the new projects and initiatives that will further strengthen our organization I am confident that together, we can make a positive difference.
So much has changed in our profession since I was elected in 2000 But the one aspect that has not changed is the family atmosphere that I have always felt when being around our members and being at the conference and show each year So many of my lifelong friends have come from my involvement in this industry and our association Early on in my auction career, I worked with my family Because of their involvement and membership in the MSAA, I was urged to join, and after a few years as a member, I decided to run for the board For that, I am forever thankful Friendships, business relationships, and educational opportunities have come my way that I simply would have never been able to experience if not for my involvement. I would encourage any of our members who feel inclined to become more involved. The learning, experience, and friendships that I personally have gained are priceless
It is also great to see so many fresh faces in the last few years Our association has a diverse group of young and old members to round out the membership. So many of our older members have retired or moved away, and some of them do not attend the conference anymore. If you know a former or current member that does not attend, I encourage you to reach out and try to convince them that we need their mentorship and knowledge present at the conference and other association events to help our younger members navigate the ever-changing auction industry Not only do I miss seeing some members that do not attend, but I also personally know that they can teach us all so much about the auction industry If you are a retired member or one that has not participated recently, I personally invite you to come back and join us again Our association is a great one because of all the members who have shaped it over the years We need your input!
As I am drafting this article, the summer picnic is only a few weeks away I encourage you all to attend what is sure to be an educational and information-packed day, as well as a chance to see each other for a day The board and executive committee are also planning another great conference and show in January. Make your plans now to attend. Thank you once again for your support over the years, and I look forward to seeing you soon!

One Thousand Thank Yous are not enough!
Recently, I heard a story where a Dad told his son, "Marriage is not for you " I had to read that over many times to figure out what was meant If you love your partner in life and are lucky enough to marry that person, then the marriage is not for you; it is for your spouse! You do whatever you can to make that person feel special and appreciated to no end
When Peg and I decided the time had come to retire as the EVP of the MSAA, I thought everyone would want this job I never looked at it as a job; it was more a calling to help the MSAA Let’s just say no one from Minnesota applied. We had two excellent candidates, and the committee selected Cali Crissup as the new EVP. Over the last 20plus years, I never thought this job was something for me. It was something I could give the MSAA rather than what I was getting out of it Now I feel like the Dad when I tell Cali, "You do not do this for yourself; you do this for the members of the MSAA " You will then be the very best EVP, and you can carry this advice forward into your marriage too because like marriage, being the EVP is not for you; it is for the MSAA
Thank you all for your kind words, Glenn and Daisy for the Diamond Award, Ray Caruso for the new title, and all of you for helping me along the way
With Auctions in Mind,
Col Frank Imholte, MSAA EVP Emeritus II

Rick Berens may not have known exactly what he wanted to do when he walked through those high school doors the last time, but what he knew for certain and what he had was a drive to succeed Coming from a large family with parents who worked hard their entire lives just to provide the basics, Rick was no stranger to hard work and taking the lead
Tenacity, drive, curiosity, zeal, and passion all describe what helped bring Rick the success and amazing life he led His leadership skills started early by helping his siblings while growing up. He enlisted in the US Army and served two years, stationed in Nuremberg, Germany Shortly after being discharged, he earned his instrument rated pilot license and a degree in real estate In between selling real estate, he started attending auctions in the surrounding area He quickly caught the bug and combined two of his passions – selling real estate and auctions The rest is history.
His outside-the-box way of thinking and continuing to learn included attending seminars, and purchasing tapes/CDs and listening as he travelled from auction to auction on the drive to our cabin in Montana, and when on the long drive to each hunting trip. He made a career of learning and sharing what he learned with anyone interested For several years he taught the auction method of marketing real estate for one of the nation’s top accredited real estate schools As his wife, I can attest to his drive to succeed and “fire in the belly” for success I am proud to contribute to his legacy by providing the MN Auctioneers with a scholarship in his name
The best is yet to come! It seems appropriate to close with the what are you waiting for?

Like many, Dave grew up in a small town on a family farm, where he learned good work ethic and developed a love for cattle He also discovered at a young age, a passion for deer hunting As Dave reached his teen years, he was involved in school sports and FFA In his senior year of high school, he held the position of FFA President In that same year, while attending an auction in his hometown, it became clear that auctions would become a part of his life At an auction near his home, the auctioneer found themselves a bit short of help, so true to Dave’s nature, he jumped in and helped out He did such a good job that the auctioneer asked for his telephone number and if he’d be interested in helping with future auctions. And, as the saying goes, the rest is history! Dave kept busy after graduation working on the family farm, helping at auctions, bartending and playing softball.
In 1980, Dave attended his first Minnesota State Auctioneers Association (MSAA) Conference and Show at Quadna Resort in Hill City, MN, invited by then President, Steve Reinhardt The following year at a softball game, he met his beautiful wife, LuAnn, and he said, “It was love at first sight!” and in 1983, they married
Hoping to be of more help to Reinhardt Auction Service, he attended Worldwide College of Auctioneering, in Iowa in 1986. His wife attended his auction at the school and purchased the very first item he sold as a graduate Auctioneer. That same year he joined the MSAA. Shortly after, he attended the Professional Ringmen’s Institute in Missouri Once again, he wanted to improve to be an even larger asset to the auction company that he had grown with Dave felt he received much benefit from being a member of the MSAA and wanting to give back to the organization, and served on it’s board of directors in the early ‘90s For the past 20+ years he has volunteered to serve as Ringman at the Bid Calling Championship, alongside his good friend, Joe Przybilla He has had the opportunity to work with several Auctioneers and different companies over the years and has always considered it a privilege
His favorite Auctions were when he gets to work with cattle One auction he helped with the birth of a new calf, surrounded by a bunch of young kids that had never witnessed a live birth. He has a natural way with livestock, that is why he was given the nickname by Reinhardts of the “Cattle Whisper.” In 1991, he pursued another passion--purchasing his first Harley Davidson. He has attended several rallies--not missing a Sturgis Bike Rally in 32 years
He has a true gift of listening, is soft-spoken, humble and kind He gives the best, most sincere hugs Most of you would recognize this guy either by his cowboy hat, his moustache, contagious laugh, or his easy, radiant smile Kaija’s daughters, Kassie and Kate, when they were too young to know last names, nicknamed him, “Mr Smiley”
It is my honor and privilege to introduce to you, my brother-from-another-mother, one of the most caring, giving men I’ve ever met, your friend and my brother, Dave Finnila, as the newest 2024 MSAA Hall of Fame Inductee!

As the realization of winning has set in during the weeks following the conference and show, I still find it hard to put into words how I feel. THANK YOU! That still comes to the top of my mind every time. Thank you for all the support throughout my years in the contest, and thank you for all the congratulations after I won this year.
What does the future hold for the 2024 Minnesota State Champion Auctioneer? I plan to be the best ambassador possible for the MSAA and the industry as a whole I look forward to opportunities to explain the auction industry and competitive auctioneering when asked what being a champion auctioneer is all about I want to try to visit association members across the state as time allows I also want to work with so many of the great people in the MSAA, past champions, and members who have been such a significant part of the history of this contest to make the 2025 Minnesota State Auctioneers Championship another prestigious event drawing contestants from far and wide.
I encourage anyone who is reading this to consider competing in next year's contest I have formed many great friendships while competing in this contest The connections made and friendships formed will serve me for a lifetime I encourage everyone else to experience those same feelings found only as a competitor
I look forward to seeing everyone at the summer picnic in August. It's never too early to start thinking about next year's contest. If you have any questions about competing or any suggestions for next year's contest, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.

Connie Jean Johnson, 63, of White Bear Lake, died Wednesday, April 17, 2024. She was preceded in death by her parents, Connie and Al; brother, Mark; and sister, Debbie Shambo. Survivors include her husband, Kurt; daughter, Hannah (Alvaro) Garcia; grandchildren, Amy and Pepe; siblings, Todd (Michele), Craig (Patty), Scott (Heidi), Keith (Jennifer), Dan (Pam), and Julie (Regina); in-laws, Tamera (Carrol), Doreen (Robin), Janel (Richard), and Todd (Kelly); her beloved dog, Quinn; and many nieces, nephews, and close friends Johnson was a partner and fundraising consultant for Kurt Johnson Auctioneering She chaired the National Auction Association and the Minnesota State Auctioneers Association, organized numerous conferences, and received awards, including the golden gavel award She was dedicated to her family, especially her grandchildren, and was a strong supporter of arts, education, and social services Her tenacity, humor, and love will be greatly missed
The love and support from our auction family has been overwhelming The cards, emails, texts and calls of support from so many auctioneers from the MSAA, NAA and from auctioneers around the country lifted Connie in so many ways She would open a card and just shake her head sometimes with tears in her eyes The random gift cards for gas, the funny pictures and prayers helped us on some of the darkest days
The MSAA and NAA were an important part of Connie's life Not only did she make lifetime friends with both, but her involvement gave her an opportunity to not only share her talents but allowed her to flourish and expand her knowledge and to fulfill her professional aspirations Connie never took the microphone, but she was as much a professional fundraising auctioneer as I ever was She helped build our company to what it is Her guidance to me and to so many auctioneers will be deeply missed
It is a struggle for me to find words to thank all of you for the cards, donations, calls and for those who called to offer help with auctions From several of my direct competitors in our market who offered to step in and handle auctions to the multitude of professional fundraising auctioneers nationwide who called and just asked for dates so they would fly in to assist I sit in awe To my team who stepped into my personal auction roles, who took emails, meetings and calls often with me not even knowing all I can say is thank you Whether you were from Dillworth or Dallas, California or Milaca, Alabama or St Cloud, and I swear over 20 states, and every part of the Midwest, I just cannot believe you all came to honor my girl like that I will forever remember your presence I know I did not talk with all of you, but please know you touched me and our family deeply by being there I love our auction family

I look forward to seeing many smiling faces at the MSAA Summer Picnic on August 11, 2024. It is such a great opportunity to see each other casually and have some fun. We will be enjoying a new part of Minnesota we haven’t visited as an association in Hastings, MN
We will be meeting at the Little Log Cabin at the fairgrounds For you food lovers, we will enjoy a pulled pork meal, like we had last year, actually smoked by my youngest brother, Tim
Hall of Fame members will meet during the meal together for nomination discussion for the upcoming year An Auxiliary Business meeting will follow the meal
For that meeting:
We will start by reviewing our scholarship process: due to the increase of the scholarship award amount to $5,000 this coming year (up from $2,500), we want to be sure we are navigating that process as professionally as possible We will share the decision with the participants of the MSAA summer meeting 1.
We will also discuss possible activity ideas for the upcoming 2025 MSAA Conference 2
If you have other discussion topics, just email me at peggyimholte@gmail.com.
Come and let us plan for a great MSAA Conference and Show at Red Wing’s Treasure Island Casino, January 15-18, 2025
Thanks and see you soon
