Rangatira, Q Theatre & Regional Auckland 23–26 March 2023 사물놀이! K-리듬의 파워 VARIETY E-SEO Samulnori! The Power of K-Rhythm

1. Mun Gut & Binari

“Mun Gut,” which signals the start of the performance, is a Korean traditional ceremony of opening the door to welcome the gods and bring in good luck. “Binari” is a pure Korean word meaning ‘to pray’ or ‘make a wish’. It is a song with the contents of praise played with Korean traditional musical instruments (Samulnori). Through the performance, we wish for world peace and the successful delivery of Auckland Arts Festival. We also give our best regards to all the audience here to fulfill their wishes and stay healthy.

2. Samdo Nongak Garak

Like we have different dialects in each region, the Garak of Korean Nongak (traditional Korean music performed by farmers) also has unique rhythms for that specific region. The “Samdo Nongak Garak” is a musical performance that is created by selecting and mixing major rhythms from the regional Nongak rhythms in Korea. It is often called “The Flower of Samulnori,” the highlight of Korean traditional percussion music. This has been continually developed and played over 40 years, and today, we want to play our very special “Samdo Nongak Garak” with full breath and great passion.

3. Gyobang Gut-geori Chum (Gyobang Gut-geori Dance)

The “Gyobang Gut-geori Chum” is a dance that has been passed down from “Gyobang,” which was an institution specialised in teaching and performing traditional Korean songs, dances and music. This is performed with the unique ‘Gut-geori’ rhythm, the most frequently used rhythm in Korean traditional music performances. This dance will show the beauty of Korean dance, and create a mysterious and fantastic atmosphere with calm but delicate and mournful gestures. Starting with a slow rhythm, the beat gradually rises and it will lead to unique excitement with bare-handed dance and a traditional drum ‘Sogo’.

4. Pan Gut

Pan Gut is a comprehensive art form that combines music and play performed by professional performing arts groups. By moving the head around with ‘Sangmo’ (a Korean folk arts hat with ribbon) with various large-scale and dynamic movements, the performers show their harmony and well-ordered movements. Towards the end, each performer continues to show their best skill plays. Their unique breathing and characteristics will stand out through this individual play. The dynamic, yet smooth body movements and the sound of Korean traditional musical instruments add to the climax of the performance.
