week 10-13 - final project Description
The Br-ench
You are required to design an interesting outdoor bench. The bench should serve both humans and cats. The model should be built of a repetition of one single element. The element could vary in size according to the design. material is up to the choice of the group. Try to be creative and create an interesting bench serving the required function, that is not previously seen.
Inspiration Group project
31
Process 1. Create a small scaled model based on our concept 2. Create a mockup to identify what we need to change 3. Build the benches skeleton 4. Add the hoses on top to create the seats 5. Add final touches: painting the pipes, aligning the hoses, drilling the loose ends . 6. Build the Tree

Challenges #1 The first challenge improving the form. It was too linear, the length was uncomfortable, and it was unstable. This was overcome by enhancing our form and changing the skeleton’s material from broom sticks to pvc pipes. #2 The second challenge was making sure that the bench was stable enough to carry any weight. The pvc legs were not strong enough and would tend to fall apart. To improve the stability, we added more pipes in between the legs to hold them together and stabilise the whole bench. To avoid ruining the overall form, we took advantage of those extra pipes and turned them into shading areas for the cats. #3 The third challenge was shaping the hoses. We had to repeatedly drill them into the pipes to hold them into place. Using the blow dryer to melt them into place was not successful, so we could not achieve all desired results. 33

Reflection Using pvc water pipes and electricity hoses in making the bench gave a new function to the materials. The bench also succeeded in having hierarchy, contrast and different axis which made the overall form successful. The stability of bench was also a difficult task to achieve; however, through creating shelters for the cats under the bench the stability was guaranteed. 34
