Director’s Note When I first began in earnest to articulate my approach to this production of Into the Woods the world was a different place. And that is saying something. In the middle of a pandemic that continues to reach and stretch its tentacles into seemingly every aspect of our lives, I saw Into the Woods as a testament to the importance of connection, of collaboration, of community, of empathy, and of operating from a place of knowing kindness — “nice is different than good,” right? I also reflected on the particular relationship the Department of Theatre and Dance has with this show — one of the earliest, if not the first, musicals presented as part of the newly formed musical theatre program in the spring of 2009, directed by Professor Emeritus Dan Larocque, and starring yours truly as the Baker.

The return to this text already carried with it a great deal of emotional depth and weight as well as departmental history before November 26th, 2021, the day after Thanksgiving. The announcement of the death of Stephen Sondheim stopped me cold. Even though he was a 91 year old man with a rich, fully lived life, I had never allowed myself to imagine a world without him in it. He’s such a giant — a singular artist who revolutionized a form, mentored generations of musical theatre makers, and helped elevate this art form that we love to levels no one could ever have anticipated. Witnessing the outpouring of tributes and memorials nationally and internationally, online and in person, I was overwhelmed by the collective mourning — but no one knows how to do public mourning quite like theatre and performance folks. Many (if not most) of the quotations people were using to mark this transitional moment were pulled directly from the lyrics of Into the Woods. As sad as I was, and still am, Sondheim gave us the gift of his words, of his music, his rhymes and his provocations, his ideas and his lessons.

Working on this production of Into the Woods afforded everyone involved in this process an opportunity to honor Sondheim’s legacy and to process our big feelings and emotions through engaging with his art in performance. We used Sondheim’s words to guide us through this process as we navigated our own woods. We came together and collaborated as a supportive community of artists committed to creating a safe and generative atmosphere where hope flourishes. We face the future clear-eyed together, just as the motley crew of characters who survive this cautionary tale do in the show. We hope this production will do the same for you.

As if the emotional resonance of the occasion wasn’t enough, this production also represents our first collaboration with the Music Department in the Woltosz Theatre at the Jay and Susie Gogue Performing Arts Center at Auburn University. We are hopeful this event marks the first of many future collaborations in this beautiful space and begins writing new chapters of creative partnerships and pedagogical explorations with our arts friends across campus. We are honored to embark on this journey with you, our audience.

Guest Artist Biographies Katherine Abell (Production Stage Manager) is so excited to be stage managing again with Auburn Theatre.

Katherine graduated from Auburn in 2015 with a degree in theatre production management. She has worked at a variety of theaters since graduating including Texas Shakespeare Festival, Virginia Repertory Theatre, Clove Creek Dinner Theater, New Deal Creative Arts Center, and Theatre Huntsville. Katherine currently lives in Huntsville, AL working as a floral designer by day and a stage manager at night.

Anthony Narciso (Sound Supervisor) is a sound designer and composer based out of Orlando, FL. Anthony routinely designs for Norwegian Cruise Lines, Theatre at St. Luke’s, and Auburn University. He is also the seasonal designer for both Garden Theatre and Orlando REP. Anthony previously served as sound designer for the Texas Shakespeare Festival from 2013-2018. Recent credits include The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Camp Omigosh at Orlando Rep; The Man of La Mancha and The Bodyguard at Garden Theatre; New Day Dawning: Finding Hope at the Theatre at Auburn University; and the relaunch of production shows onboard the Regent Seven Seas Explorer. Anthony holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in theatre design and technology from UCF and is a proud member of United Scenic Artists.

Company Biographies Nikki Ahlf (Witch) is a senior majoring in musical theatre and marketing. Auburn credits include Spring Awakening (Ilse), New Day Dawning: Finding Hope at the Theatre, Bring It On The Musical (Skylar), and Big Fish. She’s also the dance captain for AU Singers. Nikki is grateful to God for her experiences and friends and family for their support!

Riley Brazell (Assistant Stage Manager) is from South Carolina and has worked on and been involved with countless shows and productions throughout her lifetime, since the age of 7. Her recent credits are Jerry Finnegan’s Sister (Beth), Godspell (had a solo), Winnie The Pooh (Kanga), Charlie Brown The Musical (Assistant Director), and Spring Awakening (Assistant Stage Manager). She is a special effects makeup artist and has been working on film sets since she was 14 with IMDb credits. Riley wants to continue working in the entertainment industry after graduating from Auburn University in 2024.

Maddie Maradik (Rapunzel) is a junior at Auburn University majoring in music theatre. Antonisia Collins (Little Red Ridinghood) is a junior BFA music theatre major at Auburn University. She loves the stage and loves to bring joy to an audience. Originally from Arizona, she is currently in her first year at Auburn pursuing her BFA in music theatre. Some of her favorite roles include A Doll’s House Part 2 (Nora) at Auburn University and bare: A Pop Opera (Ivy), The Miracle Worker (Kate Keller – ariZoni Winner), and Dog Sees God (Tricia) at Spotlight Youth Theatre. In addition to University shows, he is a proud member of the Auburn University New Media Club and Auburn’s Mosaic Theatre Company, making theatre for social justice. Ella Taylor (Lucinda) is an English and music theatre double major from Montgomery, AL. Auburn University theatre credits include Spring Awakening (Martha). Ella is also an active member of Auburn Chi Alpha, a student ministry group on campus.

Bailey Fenn (Sound Designer) is a senior BFA theatre design/technology major. She transferred from Chipola College with an Associate’s in technical production. Originating from Ozark, AL, Bailey has spent the last 9 years focusing on sound production for theatre. Bailey has worked on audio on several AU productions, and has also sound engineered for Peach State Summer Theatre’s The Marvelous Wonderettes: Dream On (Summer 2021) and worked as a sound fellow under Anthony Narciso (Sound Supervisor) for The Garden Theatre’s production of The Bodyguard (Summer 2021). Into the Woods will be Bailey’s debut musical sound design.
