Spring Awakening

Book and Lyrics by Steven Sater Music by Duncan Sheik Based on the play by Frank Wedekind Directed by Andrew Schwartz Music Direction by James Mablin Choreography by Jeri Dickey

Director’s Note Frank Wedekind’s controversial play, The Awakening of Spring, closed after playing only one matinee in New York in 1917, as it was considered by Justice Michell Erlanger of the Supreme Court of the State of New York to be too radical and obscene for the stage. The play, which was originally written in German in 1906, is an unflinching dark comedy that focuses on the coming of age of several teenagers in a provincial German town. Fast forward one hundred years, and its themes of education and human sexuality, consent, child abuse, and teen suicide are unfortunately more relevant than ever. This musical version, which was adapted and created by Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik in 2006, is for the most part faithful to the original plot but gives these adolescents an exciting contemporary pop/rock score in which to outwardly express their inner yearnings for connection, for touch, for love, for answers, and for acceptance. After all, what is more rock ‘n’ roll than teenage angst? Staging this challenging musical in collaboration with Auburn’s talented faculty, staff, and guest artists has been an incredibly rewarding experience, but what I will most remember about this process is the hard work, bravery, generosity of spirit, and infectious passion of this undergraduate acting ensemble, the student management team, the design team, and the crew. Thank you so much for joining us for this production and for supporting these talented young artists. Enjoy the show!
