With a renewed focus on health sciences research, Auburn continues to grow its Health Sciences Sector, with the Harrison School of Pharmacy’s Pharmaceutical Research Building and the School of Nursing building, which opened in 2017.

Both facilities are located near the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM), which will bolster interdisciplinary collaborations among VCOM medical students and Auburn nursing and pharmacy students.

Auburn’s newly created Center for Cyber and Homeland Security is a nonpartisan think tank that works to develop innovative strategies to address current and future threats to the U.S. The center convenes experts and practitioners for executive-level events, publishes policy-relevant analysis and provides expert testimony to Congress on critical issues and challenges related to cybersecurity, critical infrastructure, counterterrorism and homeland security. The center is part of the McCrary Institute for Cyber and Critical Infrastructure Security, and drives the policy component of the institute’s work.

Five Auburn professors have been named fellows of the National Academy of Inventors, and the university continues to commercialize its discoveries to benefit the public. In 2018, option and license revenue for Auburn inventions totaled more than $1.1 million.

To expand Auburn’s education, research, partnership and economic development initiatives to meet pressing social needs, the university plans to hire 500 tenuretrack faculty by 2022 targeting a broad

range of research and scholarly disciplines.

Established in 2007, Auburn Research Park is a 171-acre, mixed-use entrepreneurial research and business campus focusing on technology/knowledge-based businesses, research centers and university research facilities. It is home to the Auburn Business Incubator, the Tiger Cage Accelerator and a growing health sciences complex.

The work conducted at the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Laboratory is helping top-tier companies successfully inventory and track products by using wireless systems to send data from microchip tags on items back to receivers that provide detailed, real-time product information to managers.

Specializing in retail, supply chain and manufacturing settings, experts at the lab develop new inventory control applications and have worked with retailers such as Amazon, Target and Saks Fifth Avenue to improve inventory predictability, increase delivery speed and lower costs. The RFID Lab is also partnering with Delta Air Lines to establish an aviation sensor ID bay where students will research and further develop RFID technology.

It can be heard before kickoff when Auburn fans join together for a loud “War Eagle!” as the eagle soars inside Jordan-Hare Stadium. >>

The E A G L E F L I G H T is one of the most treasured game day traditions in all of college football. Fifteen minutes before each home football game kickoff, the eagle takes flight inside Jordan-Hare Stadium for what ESPN has proclaimed the best pregame tradition in the SEC. Even visiting fans are captivated as the eagle soars around to the thundering “Waaarrrr Eagle!” of fans. The eagles promote wildlife conservation as a part of the education initiatives of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Southeastern Raptor Center. The USFWS permits the raptor center to house eagles and use them on hundreds of educational presentations each year, including Auburn’s home football games.

T I G E R W A L K is a tradition that began in the early 1960s. Two hours before kickoff of every home football game, thousands of Auburn fans line Donahue Drive to cheer on the team as they walk to Jordan-Hare Stadium. Tiger Walk is such a major part of game day activities that it’s listed on the players’ game day itinerary. Fans often carry on the tradition at away games and bowl games.

T O O M E R ’ S C O R N E R is where you’ll find the celebration after a big Auburn win. The rolling of Toomer’s Corner at Auburn was named in 2018 as the nation’s “Best Sports Tradition” by the USA Today 10 Best Readers’ Choice travel award contest. The intersection of College Street and Magnolia Avenue is where Auburn’s campus and the city of Auburn meet. It’s also home to the famed Toomer’s Drugs, where the tradition of rolling the corner is said to have begun. The local drug store had the only telegraph in the city, so when employees received news of an Auburn victory at an away game, they would throw the ticker tape onto the powerlines of the intersection. There is no clear consensus on when the tradition changed to throwing toilet paper into the trees.

Pep rallies hosted by the Student Government Association and the city of Auburn are held at Toomer’s Corner during football season. Thousands of students, faculty and fans fill the downtown streets to cheer the Auburn Tigers. Encouraging spirit within the Auburn community and campus, these pep rallies boost enthusiasm and stir Auburn pride in the heart of each member of the Auburn Family.

Complete with a 26-acre lake, peaceful waterfalls, hiking trails, campsite areas and over miles of biking and hiking trails, Chewacla offers residents the great outdoors minutes from downtown Auburn.

Rustic cabins make the perfect getaway for rest and relaxation. Admission is $4 for ages 12-61, $2 for children ages 4-11, and $2 for seniors over age 62.

KREHER PRESERVE AND NATURE CENTER 2222 North College Street Preserve Office (334) 502-4553 or AU Office (334) 844-8091 Kreher Preserve and Nature Center is an outreach program of the Auburn University School of Forestry & Wildlife Sciences. The preserve features five miles of trails over 120 acres, an amphitheater, pavilion, fire pit, nature playground, restrooms and several areas designed for nature exploration.

Educational programs, hikes, camps, trail runs and other activities are scheduled throughout the year, and the preserve is available to reserve for special events and parties. Kreher Preserve is open seven days a week from sunrise until sunset. No pets. No bikes. No admission fee.

Davis Arboretum is dedicated to the display of native woody plants of the southeastern United States. The 14-acre natural setting is supported by the College of Sciences and Mathematics at Auburn University.

It is open year-round from sunrise to sunset and provides visitors a place for reflection and relaxation as they stroll along meandering paths. The scenery is reflective of unique habitats found in Alabama, such as rocky hillsides, stream bottoms, pond edges, salt-spray influenced sand dunes, pitcher plant bogs, and the Black Belt prairie.

In the spring, visitors will observe the blooms of more than 1,000 native Alabama azaleas, the largest collection in the state, as well as a multitude of native wildflowers. In addition to native plants, the arboretum is dedicated to implementing sustainable practices in the landscape. As a teaching resource for the public, the arboretum offers self-guided learning resources like the Stormwater Tour, which showcases tips for managing stormwater in a landscape.

Informational brochures for this tour and other topics, such as locating native trees and shrubs in the facility, are available at the Arboretum Pavilion.

The arboretum also functions as an outdoor classroom for university classes and local schools. There is no charge for admission.

One of the many benefits of life in a college town is an exciting year-round lineup of athletic events for every fan and family to enjoy. A member of the Southeastern Conference, Auburn has 21 NCAA Division I-A athletic teams—nine men’s and 12 women’s. The university’s teams have claimed 22 national titles, including football, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, equestrian and women’s track and field. Auburn’s athletic teams are known as the Tigers, and the official colors are orange and navy blue.

Auburn’s mascot is the beloved Aubie the Tiger. Building on a legacy of athletic prowess, the Auburn Tigers have achieved seven perfect football seasons and won 12 conference championship titles. Three Heisman Trophy winners wore orange and navy on the field: quarterback Pat Sullivan in 1971, running back Bo Jackson in 1985 and quarterback Cam Newton in 2010.

IMPROVEMENTS

Opened in 2018, the Harbert Family Recruiting Center in the southwest corner of Jordan-Hare Stadium houses a new football locker room, the Tigers Den recruiting lounge, the upscale Tiger Walk Club for fans, recruiting space for Olympic sports and a new press box. The $28 million, 44,000-square-foot multistory facility tells the story of Auburn’s unrivaled tradition and history. Auburn University is also home to the largest video board in collegiate sports, measuring 190’x57’.

Downtown Auburn and Auburn Mall are longtime shopping favorites, and both have added a number of new restaurants and retailers in the past year as they’ve redeveloped and grown. The area surrounding the mall, along Opelika Road, has also had a busy year of renewal.

After the addition of two new shopping centers and growth of the existing Ogletree Village, southeast Auburn has celebrated the opening of nearly 20 new shops and restaurants in the past several years.

As classes start back for the 20192020 school year, there are 13 campuses that make up Auburn City Schools, consisting of nine elementary schools, two middle schools, one junior high and one high school.

Enrollment has surpassed 8,700, and ACS is one of the fastest growing school systems in Alabama with an average of approximately 185 new students per year for the past five years (2014-2019).

To address enrollment growth, the ACS Board of Education approved a 10-year facilities plan in 2014 and updated the plan in 2018.

The school system’s 2028 Facilities Master Plan is inclusive of new construction, renovation, and demolition projects along with other facility upgrades necessary to facilitate student capacity for ACS over the next 10 years.

In the spring of 2015, the Auburn City Council approved the allocation of the 5 mill capital fund to the

school system in order to build new facilities and update existing campuses within ACS. The first project to be completed was a new Auburn High School, located at 1701 East Samford Avenue, with a capacity for 2,200 students in grades 10-12. The second was Creekside Elementary, located at 1800 Richland Road, with a capacity for 600 students in grades 2-3.

In the next phase of the facility master plan, ACS will begin significant construction projects on the campuses of Cary Woods Elementary School and Drake Middle School in the summer of 2019.

As far as additional campuses, a partner school for Yarbrough Elementary is projected to be the next venture, which would create 10 elementary schools systemwide and five pairings of partner schools at the elementary level. The plan can be viewed in its entirety at www.auburnschools.org.

>> PUBLIC SCHOOL REGISTRATION Alabama law states that children must be 5 years of age on or before September 1 to be enrolled in kindergarten. Children must be 6 years of age by September 1 to be enrolled in first grade. With continued local support and recent approval of a countywide property tax renewal in February 2019 by the citizens of our community, ACS will continue to fund additional teacher units, including art and music at all campuses.

In the realm of technology, ACS is proud of the 1:1 initiative that rolled out in the 2018-2019 school year placing iPads in the hands of every student in grades 8-12 at Auburn Junior High and Auburn High School.

On the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and the American College Test (ACT), Auburn High School students consistently score above the state and national averages and are regularly in the top five in the state in these scores.

With a 96% graduation rate (2018), Auburn High School graduates have been awarded more than $110 million in scholarships since 2012.

As a part of the university, the museum represents the commitment and dedication Auburn has to advancing the arts. Community memberships are available to support programs and exhibitions.

The building is a strikingly unique 40,000-square-foot structure made up of travertine stone imported from Tivoli, Italy. Inside the museum, the lobby opens onto a central rotunda with a breathtaking Amber Luster Chandelier

Permanent collection strengths include mid-20th-century American modernism; contemporary prints and photographs, the work of John James Audubon, Mexican modernism, works on paper pertaining to the South, Belleek Irish porcelain, contemporary ceramics and Southern outsider art. The museum also presents a juried outdoor sculpture exhibition, where sculptures selected from artists nationwide are exhibited around the lake.

DRIVER’S LICENSE: New residents have 30 days after moving to obtain an Alabama driver’s license. If you have a valid, out-of-state license, you only have to take an eye test and show your Social Security card. If you do not have a license, you will also have to take a written exam and a road test. Tests are $5 and a four-year license costs $36.25. A driver’s license is valid for four years from the date of purchase.

Tiger Transit provides safe and reliable service to and from Auburn University. It is a popular mode of transportation for Auburn students who have free, unlimited access with a valid student ID, but it is also available at no cost to university faculty and staff for on-campus routes. Tiger Transit does not operate during home football games or university holidays.

TAGS/REGISTRATION: New residents must transfer their vehicle title and obtain an Alabama automobile license plate within 30 days of establishing residency. Tags may be purchased at the Revenue Commissioner’s office. You will need current tag registration, mileage reading, title or the name of lien holder or copy of the lease agreement, driver’s license and proof of insurance.

A night transit service to off-campus locations is offered from 6:15–10 p.m. (fall and spring semesters) and from 5:15–9 p.m. (summer semester). The night transit off-campus route is one-way and will not board passengers for return trips to campus or for other Tiger Transit destinations.

The 35,000 sq. ft. facility located on the corner of Thach Avenue and Dean Road houses a collection over 55,000 items, including books, audiobooks, DVDs and more. Public computers, printers and photocopiers are available for patrons’ needs. The library also offers a digital collection available 24/7 that includes eBooks, downloadable audiobooks and digital magazines. Requests for materials are always welcome.

The library offers a wide range of programs and classes for all ages, including several weekly storytimes, author programs, CreativeBug classes, and the Summer Learning Challenge.
