Welcome to the February edition of the Resident Relations eNewsletter! Last month we experienced some chilly temperatures, so let's hope February brings a bit more warmth and sunshine.

While I adore the winter season, I am eagerly anticipating the arrival of spring. Nevertheless, with love in the air, let's prepare to celebrate what this month has to offer.

Auburn House offers a variety of winter amenities for your enjoyment, including different rinks, cross-country trails, and snowshoe rentals. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with our winter rules, and venture out to embrace the winter season.

A heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to our Coats for Calgary bin. With your support, Coats for Calgary collected over 7000 jackets this year. Contributions like these are what make Auburn Bay an extraordinary community to reside in.

February marks Black History Month and features other significant commemorative dates to celebrate! Explore these dates below.

Winter Rules GENERAL WINTER RULES No person is permitted on the ice while the red flags and thin ice signs are up. The only exception is trained ABRA staff who are conducting safety checks.

All users must stay off the lake until the thin ice signs are removed and the green flags are flying.

All users must act in a safe and responsible manner.

Members and guests will enter and use the outdoor amenities at their own risk.

The ABRA staff will evict any user displaying unacceptable behavior of any kind at our discretion.

General courtesy towards ABRA staff and other patrons is expected of all individuals using the park, facility and its amenities.

Children/youth must be accompanied by a card holder while using ABRA facilities.

No dogs are permitted on ABRA property including the lake and lake access ways.

Do not litter while using ABRA amenities.

Wood burning fire pits are NOT permitted on ABRA property including the lake and lake access ways.

Portable propane fit pits are permitted on ABRA property but must be supervised at all times.

Propane fire pits MUST be removed daily and cannot be left out overnight.

Residents MUST remain with their guests while using ABRA amenities, including lake accessways.

Smoking, vaping and drinking alcohol are prohibited on ABRA property, including lake accessways.

In all matters, whether or not specifically covered herein, courtesy and common sense shall prevail.

SKATING RULES No person is permitted on the ice while the red flags and thin ice signs are up. The only exception is trained ABRA staff who are conducting safety checks.

Skating is only permitted when ABRA determines it’s safe to do so.

The ABRA does not provide supervision for rink use.

Helmets are highly recommended for anyone using any ice surface.

Nobody is allowed on a skating surface while the Zamboni or other equipment is maintaining it.

Hockey sticks and pucks are not permitted on the pleasure rink, no exceptions.

ABRA residents and their guests are expected to respect ALL skating surfaces, including ones that are not maintained by ABRA. No person shall dispose of any debris, including but not limited to rocks, trash, sticks and ice chunks onto the ice.

Building personal ice surfaces is not permitted until ABRA staff deems the lake is safe and, the green flags are up, and the thin ice signs are removed, regardless of the ice depths in your area.

The small hockey rink on the lake is for families and beginner’s hockey only.

Please be aware of patrons on other ice surfaces (lake loop, family rink, etc.) while playing hockey.

NO slapshots are permitted.

LET’S TALK ICE SAFETY The arrival of winter brings your favourite holiday activities and seasonal sports. Whether it's a laid-back ice skating session with loved ones or some friendly hockey games, make sure to keep safety a top priority. Water safety doesn't end just because the lake has frozen over.

BEFORE YOU GO: Teach children to call for help loud and clear if they are in trouble.

Kids: check with a responsible adult before heading onto, or near, the ice.

Check that the ice is smooth and at least 10 cm (4 in) thick.

Check with local authorities for more information on ice thickness.* Understand that ice is often unpredictable. In spring weather, thick is is not necessarily safe. During spring melt, impurities in the ice melt quickly, creating weak spots.

Ice seldom freezes or thaws at an equal rate.

If in doubt, don't go out!

ON THE ICE: Obey all signs posted on, or near, ice.

Ensure that children only play on, or near, ice while a responsible adult supervises.

Use the buddy system - never walk on ice alone.

IF YOU HEAR A CRACK: Lay down and crawl on the ice.

Crawl or roll back to land.

SELF RESCUE TIPS: Float on your stomach, facing the shore.

Reach forward onto the ice - do not push down on it.

Kick your legs to slowly push your torso onto the ice.

Crawl away from the hole. Get medical help immediately. If you can't climb onto the ice, float in the water and call for help loud and clear.

HELPING OTHERS: Phone 9-1-1, then call out the self-rescue steps.

Push or throw something (e.g. long stick, rope, floating aid) that the victim can use to get out of the water and float on. *The ABRA posts the lake's ice thickness on AuburnBayRA.ca Stay updated by checking our pop-up screen on our website.

Crokicurl If you don’t feel like skating, check out our crokicurl setup! Our maintenance team has created a crokicurl rink on a designated area of the lake. Crokicurl is a fun new outdoor sport that combines two Canadian favourites – Crokinole and curling. Play in pairs or with the family.

Toboggan Hill Sled down our designated toboggan hill located near the Amphitheater. Did you know that our Amphitheatre is equipped with a functional fireplace! The fireplace dial operates on a timer, but it is fully operational and ready for use. Next time you're at our toboggan hill, feel free to turn it on and enjoy a warm, cozy fire while you engage in some winter activities!

STAY SAFE, STAY OFF STORM PONDS With more people heading outside for winter activities, The City of Calgary wants to remind kids and their families to be safe while enjoying outdoor skating.

City of Calgary or community-designated outdoor skating rinks offer fun, free skating for all skill levels. Rinks maintained by The City are checked daily for ice thickness and quality, and surfaces are flooded as needed to make sure they’re safe for skating.

While your community storm pond may look inviting, recreational activities are not allowed on them. These ponds are part of your community’s stormwater infrastructure and are there to reduce community flooding and clean stormwater before it returns to our rivers. Ice on these ponds is less predictable than ice on regular ponds and can be unstable even when it looks solid.

Here’s why: Storm ponds contain sediment and contaminants (e.g. bacteria, fertilizers, pesticides, vehicle fluids, metal, road salt) that are collected as water travels through the community on their way to the storm pond, and can weaken the ice.

Water levels are also constantly changing as water moves between inlet and outlet pipes creating unpredictable ice conditions.

Although the ice may appear thick in some areas, other areas may have little to no ice and often snow can cover visible hazards.

Bring in your tenancy agreement & photo ID with the Auburn Bay Address.

Black History Month

Monthly Dedications: February is Black History Month!

Every February, people across Canada participate in Black History Month events and festivities that honour the legacy of Black people in Canada and their communities.

The theme for Black History Month 2024 is Black Excellence: A Heritage to Celebrate; a Future to Build.

Black History Month is a time to learn more about Canadian stories and the many other important contributions that Black Canadians and their communities have made to the history and continued growth of this country.

Commemorative Days: February Another month filled with significant commemorative dates and events that celebrate various aspects of culture, history, and awareness. Here are are some upcoming commemorative dates to look out for in February.

February 15, 2024 - National Flag Day of Canada On February 15, 1965, Canada’s red and white maple leaf flag was raised for the very first time on Parliament Hill. On the same day in 1996, National Flag of Canada Day was declared. Our national flag is a symbol that unites Canadians and reflects the common values we take pride in — equality, freedom and inclusion.

February 19, 2024 - Family Day Family Day is a holiday designed to celebrate and emphasize the importance of family life. The day provides an opportunity for people to spend quality time with their families, engage in various activities together, and appreciate the bonds that strengthen family relationships.

February 28, 2024 - Pink Shirt Day (Anti-Bullying Day) Pink Shirt Day is a global movement that originated in Canada, aimed at raising awareness about bullying and promoting kindness and inclusion. Break out your pink shirts as they symbolize a stand against bullying and show support for creating a more positive and respectful environment in schools, workplaces, and communities.

COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS EVENT: On January 19th we hosted our Community Conversations Event and had an amazing turn out. Those who attended were able to chat with their community resource officer and other community liaisons including but not limited to Calgary Bylaw, Calgary Parking, and a Auburn Bay Community Board member. Also in attendance were a representative from ward 12 as well as Tom Kmiec - MP for Calgary Shepard. This event was an opportunity for residents to address inquiries, concerns, and engage in conversations about the community, all while enjoying complimentary coffee and refreshments. If you missed this event, Auburn House will be hosting another Community Conversations Event on March 12th, 2024. See you there!

Snowshoe Rentals

AUBURN HOUSE OFFERS SNOWSHOE EQUIPTMENT RENTALS! A FEW SNOWSHOE RENTAL REMINDERS: Residents MUST have their membership card to rent snowshoes.

Snowshoes can be picked up and dropped off at our main office.

Residents will be required to fill out a safety waiver before renting.

Children under the age of 12 can rent out snowshoes with their parent/guardian.

Snowshoes are first come first serve.

They may only be used on Auburn Bay Lake and in Auburn Bay Park.

Residents are responsible for returning the equipment in working condition.

Cost for lost/stolen/damaged items will be covered by the resident(s) who are renting.

We have a range of snowshoes available. They are based on weight and include: Silver - 90 lbs.

Orange - 150 lbs.

Blue - 200 lbs.

Red - 250 lbs.

Winter Rules Continued TOBOGGAN HILL RULES The ABRA does not provide supervision for toboggan hill use.

Tobogganing is permitted in designated areas only.

The designated tobogganing area is the hill at the Amphitheatre. Please ensure that you are ONLY sledding down the hill towards the Amphitheatre. DO NOT sled down the back side of the hill.

Helmets are highly recommended for anyone using the toboggan hill.

Parental supervision is advised.

When tobogganing: make sure the route is clear before proceeding, DO NOT walk up the middle of the hill (stay to the sides), always face forward, clear the path quickly after stopping, avoid excessive speeding and DO NOT alter the hill.

Please stand outside the riding area to prevent collisions.

Be courteous and do not walk up the middle of the hill.

SNOWSHOEING RULES No person is permitted on the ice while the red flags and thin ice signs are up. The only exception is trained ABRA staff who are conducting safety checks.

Do not use snowshoes on the cross-country ski track.

Snowshoes can be signed out for a maximum of 3 hours.

Please be respectful when borrowing equipment and ensure that it is returned in the same condition that it was borrowed in.

ICE FISHING RULES No person is permitted on the ice while the red flags and thin ice signs are up. The only exception is trained ABRA staff who are conducting safety checks.

Ice fishing is only permitted when ABRA determines it’s safe to do so.

Ice fishing holes must be made by an ice auger and be no larger than 8 inches in diameter.

Ice fishing holes may not be drilled any closer than 45 feet from ANY prepared ice surface, including rinks, lake loop and other cleared surfaces, such as the cross-country ski track.

Please be aware that a “cleared ice surface” refers to any ice surface that has been cleared at any point in the season, even if there is a fresh snowfall on top.

All holes must be made a minimum of five (5) feet away from other individuals who are also ice fishing.

Fishing within 15 feet of the lakeshore is prohibited.

All ice fishing gear MUST be removed daily and cannot be left out overnight.

Please fill the hole once you are done fishing and mark it with a stick. This ensures that the hole will freeze over evenly and that others will see it.

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING RULES The ABRA does not provide supervision of the cross-country ski trails.

Parental supervision is highly recommended.

Do not walk on the groomed cross-country ski trail.

Step off the track to pass others. Tuck your poles while passing.

If you stop for any reason, please step off the trail.

THE ABRA IS A KIDSPORT CALGARY SPORT CLUB CHAMPION As a part of our Safe Space Initiative, the ABRA became a KidSport Calgary Sport Club Champion in spring 2022 in order to offer more inclusive youth sport program opportunities to low-income families. KidSport Calgary offers grants of up to $500 per child/year to help cover sports registration fees for youth under 18 years of age. Auburn Bay Safety Rangers This FREE online program is for Auburn Bay Residents who want to become an official Safety Ranger for their community! This program is designed for children aged 4 to 10.

Students will work through different online workbooks throughout the summer that are both engaging and educational! Safety Rangers will explore a variety of different topics and learn the importance of practicing safety wherever they go!

GYM SCHEDULE & INFO Please be aware of the rules for our gymnasium: Indoor Courts do not have a reservation system. All courts are on a "first come first serve" basis.

However, all players must abide by the rotation system and take turns alternating game play when there are more groups than courts.

Once a match is complete, the next available players will head to a court to start their game.

Please be courteous, fair, and respectful of all users.

Auburn House staff do not delegate game times and/or rotations.

Drop-in Fees for Guests ABRA DOES NOT PROVIDE GYM SUPERVISION

Adult guest drop-in fee: $10 Youth guest drop-in fee: $5

OPEN GYM & SPLIT GYM Open Gym (Non-Netted): Basketball, floor hockey, dodgeball... open gym is an all-ages opportunity for family and youth to use the gym for sports!

Split Gym (Half Netted, Half Non-Netted): Half the gym accommodates non-netted sports and half accommodates pickleball or badminton.

DROP-IN PAYMENTS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE, NO EXCEPTIONS.

ADULT DROP-IN REMINDER: Please note that our Adult drop-in times are 16+ only. No children are permitted in the gymnasium during these times. Children under the age of 12 are NOT to be left unattended in the facility.

GYMNASIUM RULES AND REMINDERS All users must check-in at the office before entering the gymnasium.

Adult members are permitted to bring up to 5 guests (per household) Residents MUST remain with their guests while using ABRA amenities.

Guests are not permitted into the facility until their resident is present.

Youth members (12-16 years, with written parental consent) up to 2 guests (per household) Indoor shoes are mandatory for all users.

The gymnasium is not a makeshift locker room. All users must use the designated changerooms in the bathrooms.

No outdoor hockey sticks or pucks permitted.

No food or drink (except water).

Gymnasium Schedule is subject to change at any time without notice.

Please respect the designated dropin times.

Please DO NOT put tape on the gymnasium floor to make your own court lines.

ABRA will be monitoring this going forward.

UPCOMING EVENTS Family Valentine's Day Dance

ONLY A FEW SPACES LEFT!

Saturday, February 10, 2024: 4:00pm – 6:30pm Valentine’s Day is around the corner and we’ve got a special event designed to celebrate!

Spend the evening on a parent-child date night, or come as a family. This event will have music from a live DJ, dancing, games, snacks, giveaways, and a photo booth to capture your memories. Semi-formal attire is encouraged, but not required. Children are required to be in attendance with a parent/guardian.

Advance RSVPs are required as space is limited, and this event is for Auburn Bay RESIDENTS ONLY (one Auburn Bay household only per RSVP).

RSVPs and your Family Booking Fee* must be submitted through Eventbrite via AuburnBayRA.ca. Membership cards are MANDATORY to be presented upon check-in with your Eventbrite ticket.

This event is held in the gymnasium, so unfortunately, NO SKINNY HEELS will be permitted, as they will damage the gymnasium floor. Flats, wedges or chunky heels only.

For those who are registered, this is a friendly reminder that, if at any point, some or all of your registered family members are no longer able to attend, to please email events@auburnbay.org to update your RSVP, even if it is only the difference of 1 person no longer attending.
