WHAT IS THE AUBSU OPEN LECTURE PROGRAMME? AUBSU has invited both established and emerging artists, researchers and writers to talk to students about their ideas, work, industry experience and how they got where they are today.

Many of the speakers are cross-disciplinary, and their works blend the areas of art, technology, science and politics.

We hope you find them inspiring!

Mr Bingo has been described as a ‘person who has redefined the traditional job description of an illustrator’. His work is characterised by his in-your-face humour and cheeky character, and he has been commissioned by the likes of Jimmy Carr, Channel 4, Carhartt, TIME, GQ, the TATE, QI, The Washington Post and The New York Times, to name a few.

He is best known for his project ‘Hate Mail’, which involved being commissioned to send beautifully illustrated, insulting postcards to strangers. The project went on to be exhibited in galleries and gained notoriety among the global press.

Mr Bingo will talk about the ‘37 things he has learnt’ over the last 20 years from being a commercial illustrator to running a successful kickstarter, and now trying to transition from clients to being a Fine Artist.

Joe’s work investigates the intersection of architecture and music. It is concerned with silence, sound and physicality in both tangible objects and aural experiences.

By investigating an otherness in architecture through music, his work represents an ongoing exploration characterised by music, instrument and design.

He invented the Haptic Music Machine, an instrument that represents the balance of silence and sound, absence and being, melody and absoluteness of space.

While dependent on existing musical objects, the instrument is unique in its form and sonic output.

Joe will talk to us about the relationship between sound, space and architecture, and how he developed the Haptic Music Machine.

Robert Jackson set up Eye Can Draw in 2012, a project that explored how self-built, low-cost eye-tracking technology can be used as a drawing methodology for artists with physical disabilities to maintain and develop their practice.

The project explored the process and outcomes for artists directly drawing with eye movement, along with considering how the new method may develop a new visual language within the artists’ practice.

Both artists involved in the project have multiple sclerosis, and as their dexterity has decreased, Eye Can Draw provided them with innovative ways to continue their work.

Join us to hear Robert talk about the project and the potential of technology to be used to increase accessibility to art, and how it can also provide us with new ways of creating imagery.

ANNA FEIGENBAUM 22nd February 5-6pm UH001 Anna Feigenbaum’s research is on the interaction between creative design and protest. She investigates how communication can propel social change, focusing on art and technology.

She has been funded by the Wellcome Trust and contributed to the curation of exhibitions such as the Cruel Designs Exhibition at Banksy’s Dismaland and Disobedient Objects at the V&A. She also collaborated with the sustainable Graphic Design agency Minute Works to produce RiotID: a guide to tear gas safety and protesting tips.

Anna will be coming to speak about why politics needs arts and crafts, and the potential of design and technology to empower the public voice.

This talk will be followed by an optional, one-hour workshop: a scenario will be given and attendees will be given materials to come up with creative solutions for campaigns and protests.
