BUB X is an innovative design approach, looking to change the way in which universities are structured, and how students learn. Located on the Eastside Portland waterfront, BUB X embraces the Portland student through an immersive housing and student hub experience. It reinvions how students learn in the wake of COVID-19 through new learning opportunities and interactive student programs. By simultaneously embracing nature and tech, BUB-X encourages students to embrace the new technology they've been given while also celebrating and engaging with their surrounding environment. 6

LOCATION + SITE DESCRIPTION Bub X is located on the eastside of Portland, Oregon and is directly adjacent to the Willamette River. The waterfront walkway spans across the edge of the site, connecting the community to this area, and allowing easy access for bikers, runners, and walkers. This area has been home to a vibrant ecosystem, and an eclectic community that needed to be showcased in the design of BUB-X. The I-5 highway runs along the edge of the site, creating both a complex noise and visual issue. This project looks at innovative ways to embrace the surrounding elements to create a more holistic environment. The highways thus shaped and moved the slope of the structure, its location, and its program. This project is located across from the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI). When developing key concepts and visuals this building became a key precedent. OMSI has been a cornerstone in the community, shaping young learners through interactive installations, and reframing the way in which people see science and nature colluding. In an area of tech and nature, BUB-X sought to do something similar. The site is also located in the Eastside Industrial area which is home to a vibrant community and commerce area. This project sought to embrace the surrounding community both through its architectural prowess, and the program it has to offer. The space gives back to the community though engagement, shared programs, and open opportunities.

THE BUBBLE Looking to social dynamics and community engagement in the wake of COVID-19, the bubble becomes and architectural unit throughout the space. The bubble is utilized as a unit for people, expanding from the single isolated individual, back into large group settings. As more people become involved and social distancing becomes less essential, the size of the bubble fades and fluctuates throughout the space.

THE PIXEL (X) The pixel is used both in plan and section to separate spaces and show the gradient from nature to tech. The pixels are separated into five different groups, each showing a different version of transparency. Each pixel highlights spaces that are accessible or non accessible to the public, and note key architectural spaces such as the tech exhibition center, the arts and crafts center, or the student work zones.

NATURE The nature space looks for ways to connect with the Portland waterfront, and create a space that is equally beneficial to the students and the surrounding community. The outdoor amphitheater and the pixelated pedestrian pathway look for opportunities to share the resources of BUB-X with everyone, and bring them closer to nature.

17

TECH EXHIBITION The tech exhibition space is located at the crux of the valley, signifying the transition from nature to tech. This space is a way for students to interact with tech science and industry in a new way. It is designed so that students can showcase what they've been working on, while simultaneously getting to experience new tech such as VR, Drones, or learning tech.

18

THE LEARNING CORRIDOR The learning corridor splits students up into the 7 learning types; social, auditory, kinesthetic, logical, solitary, verbal, and visual. The traditional college campus separates students into their majors which does not allow for cross collaboration or communication between different fields. By splitting students up into the ways they learn instead of what they are learning, BUB-X gives them the opportunity to work and live with people who they might have never had the opportunity to at a traditional campus. The learning corridor creates a gradient between the learning types, fading from social to solitary, and placing similar learning types next to one another. Each learning zone is designed with modular, movable furniture, designed to suit the needs of those specific students. The visual learning zone is retrofitted with interactive screens, and the verbal learning space has an amphitheater. 19

HOUSING The housing in BUB-X spans across the top of the mountain structure. Each floor has bubble housing units that pixelate up the sides of the structure allowing for optimal day lighting and circulation. Within the central spaces are shared spaces such as a community kitchen, study spaces, and hang out zones. Each housing unit allows for complete flexibility for the BUB-X student. In the Post-era of COVID-19 students want to feel like they have complete control over their space to ensure a stable frame of mind, and a productive home environment. This design looks to give complete balance between home life, and school life. Students are given interchangeable and flexible storage, study spaces, and living spaces. Their home space becomes the perfect combination of the bubble and pixel ideology, fusing tech, nature, students, and school all into one productive and vibrant space.

CITY HALL Eugene City hall is designed to create flexible, collaborative spaces that give back to the people in the community, and provide excellent accessible spaces. Located on the historic park blocks of Eugene, this new city is central in the heart of community. In the past this quadrant was home to several parks but over the years it has lost its original program and been converted into parking. The new city hall looks to reclaim this space for the people and acknowledge its historical precedent. The shape of the building engages with the surrounding park block, embracing the smaller historic shape, and establishing concrete nodes that point to all corners, and all communities within Eugene. The central space is designed so that people can gather, protest and have their voices be heard. The Transparent facade shows people that the interworking of their government are visible and theirs to take control of.

EUGENE HOUSING This housing development project Is located in Eugene, spanning an entire block between Olive and Willamette, and between 15th ave. and 16th. Ave. Its unique location gives opportunities for both commercial spaces and housing while also having an opportunity to highlight the natural landscape. This block is divided by Amazon Creek, a local body of water that goes throughout Eugene and most of downtown. In areas where it goes through more urban settings it is paved and has concrete elements added in order to reduce flooding. This project looks to rehabilitate the creek along with creating affordable housing and community opportunities for the indigenous population within Eugene. The Kalapuyan people who used to occupy the land now only represent one percent of its population, but 4.5% of its homeless population. Housing within this site looks to create affordable opportunities for those moving from reservations, and give them flexible living arrangement. A unique aspect of this design is the Children's Science Center located along the creek. This feature hopes to educate people both on nature, and the Kalapuya people, in a fun and interactive setting.

The design of the buildings within the site is inspired by the Kalapuyans connection to nature and their knowledge of how to live cohesively with the land. The outer edges of the buildings conform to the colonial grid while the inner edges move and fluctuate with the natural elements. This created the free flowing, curvilinear design of the interior courtyard which aspires to revert the land back to its natural beauty.

WATER + SCIENCE CENTER The science center looks at ways to engage the community in the restoration of Amazon Creek, and promote an active science mindset in the community. The program is split into two sectors, science and culture. Space is completely given for design and engagement from the Kalapuya people. The building incorporates and embraces the teachings of the Kalapuya people, and gives space for native people to showcase whatever they would like. Through this active engagement, the science and water center hopes to teach children, college students, and the community about how they can help in the restoration process.
